  • "We were excited to learn Merriman's was serving Easter Brunch. Brunch is not an island staple, and we love it for Easter. We love it for Sundays. There are now a couple of resorts that also serve brunch, in the more typical buffet style. The Merriman's brunch was table service, and the selections were very nice. Service with aloha, nice guitar music, an overall feeling of wonderful up country Hawaii. "

  • "We hadn't been to Waimea location in many years and realize we haven't missed anything. Food was good but not great -- certainly not creative or memorable. Waiter, while energetic, went overboard in meal and ingredient descriptions without, actual knowledge of island or growers (he'd only been on island 3 mo.) We were seated in corner with bus stand behind us and not enough room for the wait staff to get to it without bumping my husband each time they went by. Plus, the acoustics were strange; we could hear couple sitting beside us better than people in our party. Menu was overpriced, especially wine list (only cab on menu was $22/glass). Prices are comparable to great restaurants on Waikiki, without Diamond Head views and beach location."

  • "This is my second time at Merrimens and the dinner and service were top notch."

  • "Everything was stupendous!!! Our server was awesome and my husband who normally does not "LOVE" bread pudding really enjoyed the dessert he "shared" with me. Bummer for me. :) "

  • "Without a doubt the best food on the Big Island. A must and worth the drive. Great menu with lots of variety. "

  • "We are foodies and will be back. The Maitre'd and our server were wonderful. We were impressed with the use of local ingredients, it was inspiring!"

  • "My husband and I enjoy dining at Merriman's. We do not come as often as we would like as we llve over an hour drive. All at the restaurant staff show they are pleased that we are dining with them. Their new chef, Zak is very innovative and the presentation of the food is lovely. Their pastry chef is creative. And their different Kona coffee to choose from is fun. I do miss their several types of breads that were once served, though."

  • "We are a family of four and all of us really enjoyed our meals. I had a chance to sample a little of the meals other family members ordered and I would have a hard time deciding which was the best - they were all so good. Our server was very friendly and helpful and gave a lot of information about each of the courses. It's a bit pricey but I think you really do get what you pay for at this restaurant."

  • "This place came highly recommended by quite a few people. We were a bit hesitant because of the location. (Not on the water). So happy we decided to dine here! The food was very fresh and really great. The service was the best we've had this week in hawaii. I would highly recommend going here! They had a kids menu too, so we didnt have to spend a fortune to feed our kids."

  • "Merriman's Waimea is a very special restaurant. It serves excellent food, locally sourced and well served to a mix of locals and island visitors. The staff is superb and knowledgeable. The menu is varied with many wonderful options. And to think that they can accomplish all of this in a tiny kitchen. Keep it up!"

  • "Best meal on the island. Everything was extraordinary....including dessert which we almost never order."
    Dined on 4/8/2014
  • "Dinner at 630pm. Took almost 30min to take order. Apps tasted great, except beef raviolo had more kale (spinach?) than beef. Steaks should have been med rare and med, both came out raw (purple)! Sent back. While waiting , table was almost cleared by staff who thought we were done! (Yes we had been there that long...) Wife's came out fine but mine came out well done. Mgr offered to replace piece but at that point I was not going to eat 20min after my wife's meal nor give the chef a 3rd chance to cook a steak. Excellent desserts. As comp, Mgr took off 1 steak and both desserts from menu. I would give them another chance if I revisit the island."

  • "We have been coming here every time we've been in Hawaii for many years. The food is always delicious, fresh, and inventive. The service is as great as the food! Treat yourself to a lovely dining experience by reserving a table!"

  • "Guitar player/singer - lunchtime - very loud (small place). We were meeting a friend from out of town - difficult to talk. Small sodas, watery, no refill Server forgot my cup of soup - had difficulty finding her."

  • "Lunch is the first time we came to your hotel , I feel very tender fish , just feeling a little raw beef fried's very nice , this is a little Big , if only a bit more refined ."

  • "Excellent ambiance, delightful service, lovely setting and most important great food! Especially the dessert: a chocolate purse!"

  • "The Big Island is notoriously short of fine dining establishments, but Merriman's is a true standout. The service was as good as the food with professional waiters who are friendly, patient and knowledgable. Don't miss the Kapua pig quesadilla!"

  • "The food and beverage selections are varied to suit anyone's desires. The service is always friendly and responsive. I reserve Merriman's every time I visit the Big Island. And I recommend it to everyone."

  • "We came across this place in Waimea by accident two years ago and were treated so well we made a return visit this year. The presentation of the entree's is exceptional. The wait staff is very knowledgeable about the local food sources and describe the offerings in detail. Well worth the visit for an exceptional dining experience."

  • "Loved my Poke and my wife loved her fish tacos. The presentation was excellent. Our server was friendly and pleasant. The ambiance was lovely. The restaurant even treated us to dessert in honor of my wife's birthday. But I doubt I will be back. We both left lunch a bit hungry. I even ordered an extra side of rice with my meal. Why do high end restaurants serve such small portions? Roy's is another popular eatery guilty of skimpy portions. Sorry Merrimans. You do so many things right. Serve some bread or add some starch to your meals. It's an easy solution."

  • "We have been to Hawaii 8 times and the big Island 4 times. There are many great restaurants, and I am sure we haven't been to them all but Merriam's has become our favorite, primarily for their creative use of local ingredients. The vegetables here are as important as the protein and it is all delicious."

  • "I've been vacationing on the Big Island once or twice a year for twenty years, and I always go to Merriman's at least a couple of times per visit. It almost never disappoints. I had the ahi poke, a tomato and beet salad, the wok charred ahi, and the daily fish special (ono). Everything was great, but the salad and ono were particularly superb, excellently prepared and presented with flavors and textures that complemented one another. I can't wait to go back next week."

  • "The flavors were subtle, nuanced and yet distinctly Hawaiian. Everything was cooked to perfection. I love the fresh and local ethos which is carried out here down to the last detail. The fish and shrimp were perfectly tender. Even the poi tasted amazing. The chef's genuine passion and extraordinary talent came through in everything we ate. All the staff members we encountered were pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful. The restaurant was packed out (good going for a Sunday night in a sleepy town - an indicator of how good a restaurant it is). Service became slow and our server difficult to get hold of. That's why I don't give service 5 stars. We had to wait a while for our second order of wine and then virtually gulp it down before leaving."

  • "Merriman's is very special. Food spectacular and the service staff was friendly, attentive, and professional. Merriman's excelled as a high end, excellent experience in all ways. Pricey but worth every bit for quality and service. A very special threat."

  • "What we had was delicious, but there were very few choices for vegetarians . And I had to compromise--the pasta I had was cooked in chicken broth. Server was upfront about it."

  • "We've been coming here for at least a dozen years and it just gets better each year. The lobster & goat cheese ravioli were to die for. The ice cream cookie sandwiches were the best dessert I've had in a long time. Excellent, attentive service and delicious food. Looking forward to our next trip!"

  • "Food was delicious and service was excellent. Loved that we could each order two half entrees to try different dishes. Lamb and beef were both super tender and tasty. My husband and I really enjoyed our meal here during our honeymoon on the Big Island of Hawaii - it was a highlight of our trip! We were touched that the restaurant treated us to champagne for our honeymoon."

  • "We are from Texas where there are steak houses are everywhere. I thought that I would give their Filet a try, glad I did! Excellent steak and great service to match. On our to do list next time on the Big Island!"

  • "Friends of ours who lived on the island highly recommended this restaurant. Prawn appetizer with charred tomato salsa as well as the pork main dish with macadamia nut romesco were stand outs. Inventive flavors were exciting. But as a born-and-breed Midwestern boy, I say skip the corn."

  • "We were a group of six and we received attentive individual service. Even though our individual selections were all good, some of us wished we had ordered what others had! We'll have to go again and change our choice. Instead of fish tacos we will choose blackened shrimp."

  • "Still the best run, best served fabulous food we know of anywhere in US. Have gone twice a year for last 23 years when we are in HI and never fails to be anything but fabulous"

  • "Great food seems to fall into two categories for me - amazing in its simplicity or amazing in its complexity. Merriman's fare falls squarely into the latter. The dishes are skillfully prepared and artistically presented, with fresh and unique local flavors adding bright and unexpected tones to the quality meats and fishes. Somewhat reminiscent of French food with its rich (if somewhat salty, but that's a plus for me) sauces and bases, but unlike most French food the portions are generous. The atmosphere (and the staff) is far from stuffy, lending a homey authenticity to the experience - fitting perfectly into the overall feeling of the Big Island. This restaurant came highly recommended by many friends, and we not disappointed,"

  • "This restaurant's gimmick is that it doesn't have a gimmick: it simply takes top end ingredients and prepares them expertly, and has them brought to your table by a pleasant and unpretentious (but very professional) staff. When we stay in the area for a week or so, this is the only restaurant that we go to twice in one trip for dinner. It has never disappointed us!"

  • "Fabulous burger! Chicken BLT average and fresh catch fish sandwich very good. Had to send fish sandwich back due to being very undercooked but quickly handled and next one was delicious!"

  • "Not knowing much about Hawaii, Merrimans was a wonderful surprise. Both food and service were exceptional, and a great break from eating at all the hotels. Very creative menu, knowledgable server, outstanding preparation, great wine list. Worth the trip to Waimea."

  • "The food was exceptional. This gem of a restaurant advertises locally grown foods. I found the presentation beautiful and the quality of food exceptional. We can't wait to go back."

  • "Our dinner was good, but not as good as Merriman's in Maui. We traveled 45-minutes from where we were staying on the Big Island to dine here because we had such a wonderful experience at their sister restaurant in Maui. Not only was the cuisine at a higher level in Maui, but the ambience was MUCH better because of the ocean views. This location has a small dining room with no views. The bottom line is that it still is a fine restaurant, but we had much higher expectations having dined at their other eatery in Maui."
