A word from Merrick Inn
Built before the Civil War and completely remodeled in 1936 by the Cal Milam family, the Merrick Inn served as the manor house for one of Lexington"s finest horse farms.

It was here at Merrick Place, that Milam and his groom, Mr. Johnson, trained the fabled "Exterminator", Kentucky Derby winner of 1918. Here also, "Tut Tut", Komuraski, Commodore, Brown Wisdom, Miss Joy, Milkmaid, McKee and Dust Flower started on their paths to fame and fortune. None of these, however, gained such widespread fame as Merrick himself. Merrick finished in the money 157 times, winning 62 races.

The Merrick Inn has been owned and operated by the Murray family for nearly 40 years. Offering the finest in traditional southern dining and innovative specials. Times have changed, but we believe the beauty and charm of our inn remain the same.

  • "What a wonderful experience. The Red Snapper was superb and the Chicken Wow. Calamari to start off was magnificent. Waiter was knowledgeable about the food and the history of the Historic Inn. Recommend a must if in Lexington KY."

  • "Definitely worth the trip. The staff are wonderful and the atmosphere is fun and inviting."

  • "We made reservation for our family of six to celebrate my Mom's 83rd birthday. Our table was ready when we arrived and the service throughout the meal. this was restaurant week so most of our party ordered from the preset 3-course menu. All entrees were fine as were the appetizers sampled. The definite favorite of the meal was the bread pudding for dessert."

  • "As always one of the best in Lexington. Food and service are the best in town, attentive but not overbearing. Simply just excellent!"

  • "This was a second visit. (The first was in April.) The food, service, decor and ambience were superb (as they were the first time). In particular, I was delighted that there was a special addition to the printed Restaurant Week menu: a delectable pork chop with Jim Beam barbecue sauce, onion rings and a bed of cheese grits. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I know that return visits to the Merrick Inn are in my future."

  • "Restaurant week menu was very good and food is always excellent! Service was friendly but verrrry slow!! It took over an hour to get entrees .."

  • "I've see numerous celebrities dine there and there was a time when you had to wait two months to get a reservation. Thank you Open Table for making that easier. It has class and elegance and full of well known horse industry types but the food is southern with elegance. Blows Paula Deen out of the water and you don't have to stand in line for your reservation. Has its own bakery on site and the bread and deserts are incredible. Service is always first rate and the price is very reasonable. I've eaten at Applebees for more than we spent at Merrick. Don McNay-McNayConsulting.com"

  • "Charming. Classic. Quaint. Exquisite. Great place for a cozy dinner. You will love the ambiance! Merrick Inn defines Southern charm. The food? Delectable. Delightful. Service? Attentive, without being overbearing. Would recommend to anyone."

  • "Tucked away in an apartment complex, this is Lexington's best in my opinion. It is actually the very elegant main house of the original horse farm that was here before the apartments. So many good items on the menu. Try the rock shrimp and artichoke dip to start. I just love the Walleye and this is one of the few places serving that great fish. My daughter always has the almond chicken. My wife prefers the fried chicken. In fact, the fried chicken may be the best fried chicken anywhere. Crispy outside and moist inside---just perfect. You can choose to eat inside in one of the formal parlors, in one of two bars that are more casual, or outdoors on a large covered patio. Service is attentive and knowledgeable."

  • "It's a Gem in the neighborhood and great place to stop by. Great food, service and an overall good place to eat!"

  • "As always, the food was absolutely wonderful, but despite having a reservation, our table wasn't ready for almost a half hour after our reservation time. The server was very sweet, but also extremely busy and it was difficult to get her attention occasionally."

  • "When the maitre d was seating us he said he chose a table in a quiet area. It wasn't but about halfway through the evening the noise level did improve. However it was too noisy for conversation at the beginning. Service was excellent aside from the noise issue."

  • "Dined at Merrick during Lexington Restaurant Week and thoroughly enjoyed it! The salmon was so delicious and cooked perfectly, the special cocktail of the night (Blood Orange Martini) was fantastic and our service was wonderful. Thanks for a great time!"

  • "First of all, they had the elusive Pappy Van Winkle in stock, which was a treat for my out of town guest. The food was delicious. I enjoyed their fried chicken with sides of spinach and corn pudding. Desert was blackberry cobbler with home made ice cream. I highly recommend this combo with an Orin Swift wine. A southerners dream!"

  • "We enjoyed our evening very much. All four of us were very happy with our entrees, and the attention and service we received from Rachel was spectacular. Merrick has always been, and continues to be, a favorite."

  • "Hadn't been there for a while and took fiancé there for part of our vacation. Its a true pleasure. The different rooms make the place comfortable as you usually don't have more than 4-5 tables around you. It bumps up the volume but not excessively. Great, true southern style cooking with some flair. Have the grouper fingers, really! So light. She had stuffed lemon sole. I'm not a fan but my taste was excellent and she loved it. I never eat the filet but I did this time. It was excellent, perfectly prepared and the bacon is real bacon. We loved it and would recommend it to anyone!"

  • "My husband and I have traveled to Lexington three times in the past fifteen months and are so glad we heard about the Merrick Inn. It is truly the best place we have eaten in LEX and was exactly what we were looking for: a fine dining restaurant with ambiance that reflected the local culture. We will surely return every time we are in Lexington!"

  • "We had a party of 3 at our table. My husband ordered the 4 piece fried chicken dinner with fries and green beans. The best part of the meal was the fries. The chicken was dry and the green beans tasted like they were out of a can. I ordered the Angus rib-eye and shared this with my 83 year old mother who doesn't eat much. I was appalled to find out there was a up charge of 5.00 to share even though we got the same amount of sides as if we didn't share. This 33.00 steak was horrible! It had absolutely no taste to it and definitely did not taste like angus"

  • "Merrick Inn is always a favorite for special occasions, gatherings with friends, and a place to take out of town guests. Quality is a cut above and consistent; staff is knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly."

  • "The Merrick Inn has long been a restaurant I reserve for special occasions. It is clearly a special place in a special setting with outstanding food. The parking was less than desirable as there were no spaces available other than valet parking (something I rarely use). The feel of the restaurant is formal with interesting décor reminiscent of classic movie scenes for upper scale dining occasions. I was disappointed in the air conditioning as it was a little warmer than I personally prefer though it was not intolerable. The food was among the best I have ever had. However the service was a little slow which may be attributed to the crowd. It remains a favorite for me but the patrons there are aging, myself included."

  • "It was a perfect night to celebrate my daughter's 40th birthday. The only complaint, if you want to call it that, was a table of eight next to us was extremely noisy and lot of loud conversation. I love your restaurant. Thank you. David Deaton."

  • "The evening was very nice. Celebrated my wife's birthday with two of our children and their spouses. Food and service were excellent. My wife had the chicken pasta dish which I would order next time I go there for dinner. I had the lemon Sole dish and although it was good it was kind of bland. It really didn't have much flavor. Our server did an excellent job and she was very efficient and attentive."

  • "I have been pretty much everywhere In lexington and this place is hidden! It has the best food in the whole city maybe even the state. I have been here twice over 3 years both times for college graduation treats and it's some of the best food I have ever tasted. Would strongly recommend this to any one who likes a good steak or everything I have tried from others people at my table were also perfect"

  • "Took my wife here to celebrate our 29th Anniversary. Food and service was excellent. My only suggestion is for the restaurant to actually read the notes put in via Open Table. Requested a great table to celebrate our anniversary and it was really just a normal table in a main traffic area. Given the price, I would think that they would be interested in WHY a party is coming to their restaurant and then recognize that. Not a major deal and we don't tend to complain so it is on us."

  • "It was pouring down rain for our first visit but I'm elated we didn't let that damper our dinner. Cream of corn soup for openers then Southern fried chicken crisp outside tender and hot inside. So good. Hubby had delisioso grouper. He marveled at the entire meal. We shared white chocolate bread pudding with cranberries and bourbon sauce. Now what is not to like."

  • "Went to Merrick Inn to celebrate my 8th wedding anniversary. I must say it was struggle finding a place that neither of us has dinned at before. But this gem was right on target. The food was excellent and service was top notch. I heard a few of my relatives and friends speak highly of Merrick Inn so I decided that where we should. It was great choice. I would dine there again."
