Diner Reviews
  • "ll at our table had the tasting menu. Outstanding."

  • "Meritage lacks direction with its menu. There is an eclectic assortment of things that don't go together at all. My husband had the duck and it had some odd spices that don't do with duck. The pureed yams were soupy and had something in them that tasted like liquid smoke. I had the special-korean fried chicken. The friend chicken was great but the "korean" sauce was nothing more than ketchup and a spicy bbq sauce mixed together. We will not be returning."

  • "Had been trying to get here for quite some time. I certainly wasn't disappointed, and would recommend everyone try Meritage. The wine list is nice, and the food selection is varied and fresh. Also, for those who have food allergies or eat vegan, this is a great place for you."

  • "Cozy, neighborhoody feel, friendly server, but out of three of their signature dishes. Chose duck when the Korean fried chicken wasn't available and it was dry and without taste. Two appetizers that we tried - the chickpea fries and calamari - were very good."

  • "Unfortunately 3 of the 6 of us had just arrived from a long day of flight cancellations and delays. We were more tired than hungry. However, we enjoyed the drinks and the food that was ordered. We will try it again soon to get a real taste of Meritage."

  • "I have been to Meritage 3 times in the past 3 months. The food is great, especially the Vegan tasting menu on Tuesdays. I love the atmosphere, - cozy, warm and quiet. The waitstaff are very attentive without encroaching on your space. I just can't understand why this place isn't more popular - perhaps folks went a few years ago when it had different owners and chef and the food was just okay and overpiriced -- that is no longer the case! Try it again!"

  • "The selection of apps, small and large plates was ample and appealing. The kale salad as a starter was outstanding and reason alone to return to Meritage. But also nicely done was the Kobe beef meatloaf, which had a haunting umami. And I'm not one to use phrases like this. Perhaps it's just best for me to say, "try it and you'll dream about it.""

  • "We were very pleased with Meritage and will definitely be back for the food -- excellent menu -- plus the service and ambience (hard wood floors, white table cloth)."

  • "We had a lovely valentines day dinner at meritage. Small plates in particular were delicious (wild mushrooms with polenta). Service was excellent and attentive. Highly recommended."

  • "My two friends and I decided to try Meritage during restaurant week. The restaurant week menu was really great and we enjoyed every dish that we had including: lobster bisque, mussels, foie gras ravioli, crispy duck, beef brisket, and sea bass. Everything was well seasoned, hot, and enjoyable. We had delicious wine and dirty martini's with olives that were stuffed with high quality blue cheese as the drinks were made. The service was awesome from start to finish - the two owners were very visible as one served as the bar tender and the other served as the hostess. They were friendly, and very accommodating as our party was a bit late. Overall, we all enjoyed and are planning to return."

  • "It was a wonderful experience. Menu was vast... Half our party ordered restaurant week, other half didn't. Everyone enjoyed the delicious offerings and great wine bartender Irene was amazing!"

  • "We chose meritage after checking out the menu for restaurant week and it was a home run. There were so many choices for the first course it was hard to decide. We went with the foie gras ravioli, escargot, and Brussels sprouts. All we're amazing. For dinner I had the pork cheeks, my husband the duck confit and my sister the bass. All we're amazing. The setting was perfectly romantic and comfortable for a group or a special date. We will defiantly go back to try the regular menu."

  • "have never eaten a single thing that wasn't out of this world!"

  • "Meritage is and gem for those in the hood and out of the hood! Food is out of this world; noise level where you can actually hear yourself speak without screaming; Creative broad menu offers variety for those who eat meat or don't eat meat. LOVED the cauliflower and brussel sprouts small plates. Scallops were tender and moist. Great bar area with room to sit and eat at high tops if you prefer a different atmosphere then the romantic main room. Longtime servers and owners make you feel like you came home for dinner! A not to miss eatery!"

  • "Almost everything our table had was tasty, jazzed up, and beautifully presented. Delicate lobster bisque with a crispy shrimp fritter, succulent and rich pork cheeks set off by smooth sweet potatoes and winter greens. Calamari with a hot Asian sauce, mushrooms over smooth polenta, and a juicy kobe burger that was just the right size. My only negative was the flourless chocolate cake; it was adequate but nothing special -- not particularly chocolately. Knowledgeable wait person who provided good service (prompt but not rushed)."

  • "My boyfriend and I came out for restaurant week and it was by far the greatest RW experience we have ever had. We both work in the industry and don't usually go out for that reason, especially during RW. Everything from the food to the service was exceptional and the atmosphere was perfectly romantic. Amy our server was well versed in the wine list and on point making sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. Everything was prepared perfectly and we will definitely return!"

  • "My friends and I went for restaurant week and had a great time. Our server was extremily friendly and knowlegble about the menu. There was a wide selection on the "restaurant week" menu which is very rare to find. The protions seemed small but I was definitely full by the end of the meal. The space was small but I didn't feel like we were on top of the other diners. There were 5 of us at a table and we were comfortable but I can definitely see how this would be a good restaurant to have a cozy date."

  • "Everyone at our table enjoyed our dinner at Meritage. Highly recommended are the wild boar dish , the Brussel sprout appetizer and the kale salad . Wish that we would have had dessert. Would definitely return on our next visit to Philly."

  • "The service was exceptionally friendly and personal from the moment we walked through the door. We order only from the small plates, salads, and appertizer menu for our table of four and were thrilled with the variety and unusual taste combinations. The chocolate with pent butter center dessert was a brilliant combination of textures."

  • "Anne Coll's a wonderful chef who serves up seasonal menus of tasty, beautiful food in inventive combinations of fresh ingredients (some of which I would never have dreamed go together so well). Portions are generous - small plates are a little bigger, & entrées never leave me hungry. Our 4-top started with kimchi fritters, pickled vegetables, foie gras ravioli & 2 orders of chickpea fries (verrrrry tasty!). Then we did kale salads, which were wonderful - fresh, crisp kale with tahini dressing that was light enough to feel healthy but full of flavor. For entrées, we had wild boar pappardelle with a small plate of Brussels sprouts, scallops (in clam chowder!) & 2 ducks. 12 plates for 4 people, & every one a winner! Great wines & room, too."

  • "Have been to Meritage many times, it is one of the City's great restaurants and most affordable for the quality of food served."

  • "Wonderful dinner at Meritage. This was the perfect ending to an evening spent in Philly on a wintry day...food was delicious and the dining area was cozy and inviting. Would definitely recommend:)"

  • "We had not been to Meritage for quite a while because we have been going mostly to BYOB"s but were happy to see that it is just as good as we remembered. We had the duck breast and the Amish chicken and both were very good. The duck has a nice sauce although there could have been more so it didn't run out before eating the meat. We shared the beets/feta appetizer, also very good. The atmosphere is one of fine dining but also has a neighborhood vibe. Overall would definitely recommend this restaurant for either a special evening or just a regular night out."

  • "Adventurous, imaginative, affordable and fresh cuisine for a sophisticated urban palate, but without being too fussy or precious. Korean Fried Chicken, Kobe Burger and Foie Gras Ravioli were out of this world, and just a sampling of the range of options. Impressive wine list, knowledgeable servers, intimate, friendly vibe."

  • "I usually like the special menus at Meritage both for the unity of the concept and for the contents of the dishes. This one was particularly good, notably the boar papardelle and the venison. But each of the courses had something special. Meritage remains underknown, for reasons that I don't understand. I have recommended it to many friends, some of them much more serious foodies than I, and they have all reported excellent meals, interesting wine selection with very fair prices, and terrific service. So try it if you haven't already."

  • "I haven't been to Meritage in years and am so glad I went back. It is such a warm, welcoming cozy restaurant with great staff and a short, but diverse menu and wine list. I will definitely visit more often. It is off the beaten path a little but should not be overlooked!"

  • "We are long-time fans of Meritage, but the winter tasting menu was really special"
    Dined on 12/7/2013
  • "We liked the restaurant layout, which has an entrance into the bar area for drinks or to wait for dining partners and then a shift down the hall to the dining area, which was fairly quiet. The hostess/bar tender and servers were friendly and responsive, and had worked at the restaurant for some time. Overall, our meals were quite good. Our Bites (appetizers) and Salads were tasty, although the kale in the Kale salad could have been lightly sauteed to soften the leaves a bit. Our main course (Large Plates) were also well-prepared, e.g.., Kobe meatloaf, although the portions were somewhat small. Many of the clientele seemed to be repeat customers from the conversations overheard at the bar. I would also return to Meritage again."

  • "Went with a group of 4 for the special duck tasting menu, it was amazing. Everyone enjoyed everything, even the one hold out that ordered ala cart. Have been a couple of times and always enjoy everything"

  • "The first time I've been here, it was great and I was so excited to come back! This time, however, was disappointing to be honest. We were sat at a table that was clearly crooked, so much so that my fork fell off the table twice. We had a table of 4 and 2 of us wanted the tasting menu however was denied as we had a party of 4 and 2 of our members did not want it. We were confused on why the cutoff for ordering the tasting menu individually would be for parties of 3 or less instead of 2 or 4. When our entrees arrived, the meatloaf was overcooked and dry. I ended up eating a couple bites and took the rest home however it is still sitting in the fridge as I'm not too inclined to finish it. It was overall just a completely different experience."

  • "They do a food tasting menu. Last week three of us went to try the duck tasting menu. It was the best duck, in all the courses, we have ever eaten. The next night one of us went back to just eat the duck taco!!!"

  • "This restaurant is quickly becoming one of our favorite Philly places. We generally go there for the tasting dinners and have never been disappointed - but we have also ordered off the menu and been equally impressed. The food is always perfectly and distinctively prepared. We recently had the duck tasting and 3 out of the 4 courses were just delicious. The 4th (the duck taco) wasn't bad but the other 3 were exceptional. I usually don't order dessert but since it is included in the tasting, we try it and are always very happy we did. Can't wait to go back!!"

  • "The menu was filled with creative dishes, and had plenty of vegetarian and meat options. The mushrooms with coconut polenta was delicious, as were the roasted brussel sprouts. My dining companions loved their escargot, KFC, and the Kobe burger."

  • "The only reason I didn't give the restaurant the top score in everything is that the noise level got to the point that it was unpleasant. There were 3 of us at a small table and we had trouble hearing each other. Everything else was fantastic, as usual!"
