Diner Reviews
  • "I bring my brother and sister-in-law to brunch here every year for her birthday. We were seated at the time that we had reserved. I had asked for a booth with a view, but we ended up with a table closer to the buffet. In all things considered, this was a very nice table as my brother uses a cane and is not all that steady on his feet. The versatile brunch was incredible. From eggs Benedict to dim sum, Roast Beef to roasted vegetables. The bread pudding among the many desserts is the most outstanding. I love this old hotel ."

  • "Very grand setting, wonderful food, excellent service. We brought in our own wines and the waiter totally understood without asking to chill the white and decant the red. The ambiance was perfect. Excellent service."

  • "My son and his friends always eat here when we stay for an event. They always enjoy the view and feel like its a nice restaurant. They are always treated well and have great service. We are vegetarians and there are not a lot of great options for him so this is why I gave the food a 3."

  • "friendly, attentive service combined perfectly with excellently prepared dishes, all topped off with an amazing view - what more could anyone ask for! Price was a little high, so we will save next trip for a very special occasion."

  • "Delightful brunch with a wide variety to choose from. Fresh fish, craving station, salads and much, much more. Very pleased with the service. This is a must do for the Bay area."

  • "The Claremont Meritage has a spectacular location. We sat in a lux booth facing a giant bay window overlooking the bay. That was fantastic. Our waiter was very attentive, but not very well versed with the menu or the wine list. He overstated 3 dishes that we tried on his recommendation. Not as good as he indicated :( I like that you can try any dish on the menu in a small or large size. The duck was fabulous! The bone marrow, not so much. Super rich with breading on top, served with with grilled bread that was burned! Yet, they served it. The beverage service was perfect. The desserts were yummy and the service was flawless. There is a big, beautiful lounge to enjoy a cocktail before dinner, complete with a pianist."

  • "The setting & view are great. My dinner was OK; my wife really enjoyed hers. There were some middle-aged black men at the bar who were noisey - this greatly detracted from the experience. I felt like I was at a Las Vegas bar. It should have been controlled."

  • "I met a friend for breakfast on Saturday. Everything was PERFECT!!! Food (Eggs Benedict) was fabulous and service was very efficient, but not intrusive. I would highly recommend Meritage for any meal."

  • "although somewhat pricey, this is a great place to go for a special occasion. Made reservations for a table by the window so we could watch the sunset and noted on the reservation that we were there to celebrate a Cal student's 21st birthday. When they brought dessert, it came with a candle and the plate decorated with "Happy Birthday". A great experience. Terrific service from everyone of the attentive wait people"

  • "We went to the Meritage to celebrate my daughters birthday. The view is spectacular and we watched a beautiful sunset. Overall the food was quite good. The lamb shank was tender and the meat fell off the bone. The duck and the short rib was tasty as well. The bread pudding dessert was just ok. It was not warm enough and I have had much better in other places. My biggest complaint was the service. We brought our own bottle of wine which was opened, but the waiter never returned to fill our glasses all evening. I don't mind filling my own glass, but at a nice restaurant, I expect that level of service. We asked about an appetizer and the dessert and he could not describe them. it I liked the Meritage, but I wasn't thrilled."

  • "I've been to the Meritage at the Claremont for Sunday brunch twice and was so impressed both times. The first time my guest and I arrived just before closing but you'd never know it. All food stations were still fully stocked and we were given full, attentive service by the staff until the moment we left. The 2nd time we arrived right as they opened at 10:00 AM and I was impressed how everything was ready to go right at 10:00. No one running around still setting up or anything. Service here is always top notch...you're never left waiting for anything."

  • "The food and view as well as the decor is very nice but the service was more disappointing. I would have expected a more attentive waiter at a place like this with quite high hotel prices"

  • "Wonderful food and wine, great service, beautiful view. Nearly ruined by sports-bar noise levels (at least there were no TVs) and the worst lounge singer/piano player I've ever heard. Very disappointing experience, given the great reviews this place has received and the cost of the meal. Was expecting a lovely special-occasion atmosphere worthy of the food, wine and service - not this time."

  • "After 20+ years in the SF Bay Area, we finally decided to give this place a try. Very nice restaurant with an awesome view of the SF Bay. The food was great for the "price". This place is actually very reasonable as far as the price. The wine list could use some help but wasn't too bad. If the server did a bit more professional job here, this place would become the BEST in the East Bay easily."

  • "The food, service and ambiance was excellent. The next we have a special occasion and are in the Bay Area, we will definitely think of Meritage."

  • "We had a great time celebrating our good friends 42 wedding anniversary. Mario was great and attentive. The grits with chicken, mushrooms and onions was delicious."

  • "As my birthday and my husband's birthday are a week apart we decided to treat ourselves and two teenage daughters to brunch here. While it's expensive, it's well worth it. The service was excellent. We were no sooner at the table when we were offered champagne or orange juice and then it was off to the buffet. There is such a fantastic choice that it's almost impossible to taste everything without overrating. Everything we tried was excellent."

  • "Dungeness crab salad made with delicate crab cakes paired with champagne; ravioli paired with Zin were excellent ! The risotto dish was very good but not great. We had an early seating and the service was very good. This place is a lot about am is a lot about ambience. Turn of the century architecture with the best city/bay view at sunset. We'll be back to try the Sunday brunch."

  • "For a quiet place to conduct business or romance, the Meritage is hard to beat. The glorious evening view the bay and the city hang just outside the window. The service and cuisine match the setting. The price is surprisingly reasonable. Oakland's classic gem….."

  • "We had a 6pm dinner reservation. Initially the service was outstanding, but as the room became filled, the service deteriorated somewhat because the service staff had more and more tables to attend to. The fennel soup, the salads and the filet mignons were all outstanding. The desserts were just OK. The pianist in the bar area also added to the pleasant ambiance. So overall, a very fine place to dine for a special occasion.!"

  • "We ate here twice during a Girl's Weekend at the Claremont. Saturday's dinner was a wine pairing meal that exceeded expectations. The next morning we had the Sunday Brunch. The food selection was very impressive and everything was delicious. The dim sum was a special favorite. Be sure and try the lemon tarts on the dessert bar!"

  • "The Sunday Brunch at the Claremont is always a treat. Mimosas and sparkling wine flows, the buffet is fantastic with good selection and great taste, and the atmosphere is pleasant in the rustic Berkeley setting overlooking the bay. But we should express concern over what seems like a bit of laziness with ensuring silverware and glassware is properly cleaned; greasy knives and dirty glassware spoiled an otherwise exceptional experience."

  • "Dinner was excellent. The view of the bay was really nice and I love quiet restaurants where I don't need to shout to have a conversation. We started with the fried calamari, perfectly cooked, not too heavy and very tasty. The duck breast was absolutely divine! I'm still drooling. My husband ordered the lamb which tasted very good but came out a little cold. All in all, an excellent meal. Definitely on the rich side so not something I'd want to eat more than a couple times a year."

  • "The food here was very good. Only one dish was a disappointment and that was the braised bone marrow which was way too salty. However, the waiter asked the kitchen to remake the dish and it was fantastic the second time. A good and sophisticated restaurant should do this and they met this problem with five star response! Our waiter was outstanding and enhanced our dinning experience. The reason we gave three stars for ambience was because the piano and singer were ear splitting. Fortunately, we sat far away so our table was quiet but other dinners also commented on how loud the music was and sat away from the bar area. Music too loud for such a small area."

  • "A visit to this majestic hotel and dinner at Meritage always feels like a vacation. Throw in a Spa treatment prior for a special occasion and it surely qualifies as a vacation. The setting in this historic gem is sublime. While the food at Meritage never disappoints and often enchants, the staff makes for the grand experience - consummate professionals and genuinely nice people."

  • "My first visit to the Claremont Hotel and Meritage. Our waiter was just terrific. He was there when he needed to be, just the right amount of friendly talking, explained all the things that we needed to know. The food was excellent - layer upon layer of flavors. I had a really good time and looking forward to going back again. We were early diners so the restaurant was quiet. And the view from the restaurant is great - overlooks San Francisco Bay."

  • "...it used to be much better. We had a reservation but waited 30 minutes to be seated - receptionist said we had left although we were standing nearly in front of her the entire time. Amazingly, she didn't recognize us! Service was disorganized, forgetful and sloppy. Food was creative, the short rib hash inspired, but sides that would enhance food - such as toast with the hash - had to be ordered separately and arrived after food was eaten. Definitely not the gracious and welcoming environment that I remember."

  • "They offer an outstanding Sunday brunch! Wish that they would tell us that the brunch doesn't start till 10:00am! So if your reservation is for 5 at 9;30am--you cannot access the brunch--we did what anyone with any sense would do--chit chat and drink coffee for 30 minutes and then go brunching! Delicious!"
