  • Special occasion quiet dining at the Claremont

It was a special anniversary something you wanted to remember. So the Claremont is an architectural land mark with as much tradition behind it as there could be in California. We were willing to put up with great ambiance but mediocre food. To our surprise the food was amazingly good. Just had a main course each and some side veggies. The chocolate souffle was also exceptional. Service was impeccable. Unfortunately it was a little too quiet last Thursday night and we shared the great dining room with only a few other people.

One of the attractive features of the restaurant was the ability to order 1/2 orders of appetizers and entrees -- that feature has disappeared. The menu was not as expansive as in the past and the service was a little "over-the-top" -- way too gushy! The quality of the food was just OK and not something we'd go back for. It's become just another Hotel Restaurant.

  • Bring back prix fixe menu! Loved our meal too.

We went for our anniversary to have the prix fixe with wine pairings that we loved so much but it was no longer offered. So sad as it made any evening extra special. Please consider bringing it back!!!! Nevertheless our waygu tomahawk steak for 2 was absolutely incredible. Great seasoning and crust, tender, perfectly cooked. Top 3-5 steak of all time. Mushrooms on side were so wonderful they could be a meal the their own (if vegetarian). Cauliflower side was also incredible. Stags Leap Winery Petite Syrah complemented it all perfectly.

The food was very good and the view also, but was overpriced. When a person spends this much money, then the parking should be free. Lucky for us , after complaining, the parking was free. Will not be returning and would not recommend.

The staff was very well prepared for our celebrations; my spouse's 50th birthday as well as the one year wedding anniversary. The service was absolutely impeccable. I would've liked to have seen a modest past bar as well as a soup; lobster bisque or clam chowder perhaps. We were very happy and will return.

Meritage has been our go-to place for fine, relaxing dining and special occasions. The menu had been reliable and very well executed. The present "Prime Event" menu tries to convert a sophisticated restaurant into an ersatz prime steakhouse with prices to match ($50 to ~$160 just for the meat). The 4 remaining entrees were very routine. We choose the brisket. A large portion with one note of flavor and a very heavy one at that. Appetizers were very small and similarly unimaginative with prices ~25% higher than a few months ago. The one small crab cake was hidden in some fluffy greenery; the small Caesar salad was mediocre. Service was inattentive, inconsistent with the price of this restaurant. We won't be back.

The Meritage's high ceilings and spacious feel provide an instant sense of a special occasion. The hotel's history wafts around you as you eat making this a unique place to spend a Sunday. The service is pleasant and very efficient. The buffet leaves no one hungry with plentiful and interesting selections - from old standards like custom-made omelets to dim sum to seasonal salads, hot entrees, cheeses and many more. The bursting table of desserts brought a huge smile to the face of the young lad at a nearby table and did not disappoint for adults either. A few dishes were not as good as I'd hoped. The king crab doesn't compare to Dungeness and the quality seemed lacking. Overall the food was very good and well worth the visit.

We've dined several times at Meritage and we were first disappointed that our table had virtually no view and was situated right next to the kitchen especially when I had made the reservation weeks ahead of time and people who simply walked down and waited in the bar got window side tables. We also felt the menu was quite limited. We may not return again.

We had a very nice dinner at a reasonable price. The dining room is spacious and, if you can secure a table facing the windows, you will have a wonderful view of SF in the distance. The wine by the glass list was good and our server supplied a some tastes to help make our choices. To top off a wonderful evening, the parking was complimentary. Can't miss having a very nice dining experience at the Meritage.

The Claremont has a name it relies upon. We brought my 93 year old mom to the Claremont for her birthday. When she walked in she stated, "this can't be the Claremont." I stated to her that we were going to the Meritage. We ordered her a steak for $65 and that is all that was served on a wooden board. The mashed potatoes we ordered for her at $13 were extra. She had no vegetable. Dinner for 5, Total price---$455. I mean really, it cost us &30 bucks to park our own two cars in self park. Three of us had water to drink. The Claremont IS NOT worth your hard earned money. Your paying for the name.

Cons -1 small crab cake for $22.00! Also, for such a high price restaurant, one would think they would split the salad for you instead of giving you an extra plate and letting you do it yourself. Plus - although overly priced, meat was done to perfection. Everything else was average.

My wife and I enjoyed a fabulous Sunday Brunch buffet at Meritage last weekend. The food choices were amazing with something for every appetite. After the fresh fruit and fresh baked pastries my wife enjoyed the lox, assortment of bagels and "petite" capers and salad selections. I couldn't pass up the Eggs Benedict, Dim Sum and a astounding assortment of desserts! I only regret that there wasn't "room" for a trip to the Belgian waffle / omelet station or the hand carved ham and roast beef....next time! Our Mimosa's never got below half full!

I've eaten at Meritage several times, and it is one of my favorite restaurants in the bay area to take family/friends for special occasions. On this visit, I was initially disappointed when we arrived and learned that the previous menu which featured California local items, prepared in smaller sizes with wine pairings from the chef, no longer existed. I really enjoyed that menu which allowed diners to order small or full sized plates, and smaller or full sized glasses of wine, but that menu had been replaced by a new one for the month of September. That disappointment was short lived. Everything we ordered was fantastic. My mother said her scallops were the best she had ever eaten. It was a perfect dinner. Absolutely perfect.

Since our wedding in 1980, my wife and I come each year and subsequently as each of our 2 children have been born (1982 & 1987) they have joined us each year for Sunday Brunch near our Wedding Anniversary date (8/9). This year each of our children brought their significant others, both of whom had their first Claremont Sunday Brunch, and each just loved it as much as we always have.

I can't say enough about our experience at the Claremont Hotel Meritage Restaurant for Sunday Brunch. It was a special birthday for my 94 year old mother and her first visit back since 1945. The staff made her visit so extra special. We had a table with a beautiful view of the bay. She was welcomed with a dozen beautiful roses and a custom dessert plate was prepared just for her. The food was delicious with something for everybody. The presentation was elegant, the atmosphere beautiful and relaxing with live piano music. Who could ask for more. Thank you to Manager, Shannon; Hostess, Summer; Waiter, Robert; Bus service, Zachary. You all were so awesome. We will never forget this special day. We will be back with lots of family and friends!

For some reason the dining experience didn't impressed me. Maybe it was because of the server John was so unpleasant. The service was lousy I don't know if there was a specialty that day. He asked "what's for dinner?" Seems so informal to me provided that it is a decent place. Maybe he could have ask what brought us in the hotel that night was special for my fiance and could have make the night extra special. Anyway it's something to experience but not worth coming back.

Very quiet on a Wednesday evening - hotel seemed pretty quiet too. Hotel restaurants have it tough - they have to appeal to visitors, while still trying to draw locals. For most folks from elsewhere, Meritage would probably be a very good stop - classy decor, good view, interesting and well-prepared food. For locals who enjoy the bounty of fine East Bay restaurants, Meritage is a "meh". No buzz in the dining room; view is nice, but we see it all the time; and the food is creative but combinations are a little forced. E.g. the scallops with coconut was a bit odd and too sweet. The straightforward roast chicken, however, was terrific. Overall, nice place, but for the price i would go elsewhere.

Will try the Meritage again when they get it together. The kitchen was overwhelmed by a 50 person wedding party in the dining room and good took way to long to come out. The waiter apologized and gave an explaination about the sales department not coordinating with the kitchen. It is a really nice location and we would try again in a few months.

My wife and I had a wedding anniversary dinner at the Meritage as it seemed like a great place for a special occasion. It had great atmosphere with a pianist in the foyer, a large fire place at one end of the room, and panoramic views from the windows. The night we went there was a spectacular sunset that was wonderful. On the other side of the room was a large group celebrating a birthday and they all appeared to be having a good time. The food is very good and affordable so it could be a regular place to visit but the architecture and views from the windows have me leaning towards the being a special occasion venue.
