Diner Reviews
  • "We wanted to do something quick and casual for Easter. This was perfect. The atmosphere was casual but the food was delicious. We were in/out in an hour. "

  • "This was our first visit to Merchants River House. What a great location - along the Hudson River - with a great view of the Statue of Liberty. The food was great - especially the Grilled Vegetables with Soba Noodles! A very quaint restaurant and when I visit NYC again, I will be making a stop at Merchants River House! Thank you!"

  • "The view from here is spectacular. The food and service is pretty good. They had quick service for food, but allowed us to dine. Highly recommend for romantic dinner at sundown. "

  • "If you are fortunate enough to sit outside you are lucky. Inside is small and nothing to brag about. Brought some college friends I hadn't seen in 3 years. Was not terribly impressed. Food is good. Price reasonable, that's what brought me there."

  • "Dinner after a movie left us a little put off, due to surprisingly poor service from the waiter. Everything else was great, as usual. Will keep coming back, and hope the service is better, as we really enjoy this place!"

  • "A lovely spot on the waterfront, but with such a venue, it could be so much more inspired! The menu needs to be updated and refreshed, specials? While it is a neighborhood go to; the limited and uninspired menu makes it tough to go back frequently. Needs a little TLC and identity."

  • "An outstanding choice. Great food and service and very reasonable prices. We went on a cold day, though, so next time we will go when it is warm so we can sit outside."

  • "A bit difficult to find if you are not familiar with the neighborhood, but definitely worthy of going the extra mile. Had a hard time trying to decide which of the menu items to settle on - may looked quite appealing. I will have to return and try some of the other items!"

  • "Great view of the Hudson. Ordinary menu, decently prepared and service of the "Hi, my name is" variety"

  • "I've been here a few times before. There is the wonderful outside seating, but the inside is cozy with lots of ambiance as well. The food is great, and with somewhat better service than was had on Saturday, usually the wine keeps flowing. Overall it is a great scene, and a great time."

  • "Terrible service and mediocre (at best) food. They served instant mashed potatoes with a meal that cost over $20 and served wine in a brandy snifter. The only positives were the very helpful host, pretty views, and convenient location from our hotel."

  • "I went here on 2/17/14 right around sunset and the view was sooo amazing! Perfect spot for my girlfriend to propose to me. That view was enough to sell me on the restaurant, but the food and drinks were also really good for such a reasonable price. The calamari appetizer was one of the best I ever had. The lobster roll was really fresh. The sea bass could have used some salt but the ratatouille it was served on was perfect. The drinks are strong and tasty. We ordered both flavors of the spiked lemonade and a strawberry mojito. All were good. I can't wait to come back in when the weather is better so I can sit outside and enjoy my meal."

  • "This was out first time to New York and we booked the restaurant hoping for as promised views over the Hudson. We were not disappointed! We actually watched the sun go down whilst drinking at the bar. The barman was really friendly and when it was time to be seated our table was by the window (although all tables had a good view over the river). Waiter friendly but not intrusive, food delicious, we had burgers and hand cut fries, meat excellent, bacon cooked perfectly, chips lovely! We didn't have room for a desert each so shared New York cheesecake which was gorgeous. I would highly recommend this place to people as a must go whilst in that part of the city"

  • "I'm sure Merchants River House checks all the boxes, however as I was there for lunch I can only make my decisions based on that time. So here goes, CANNOT BEAT THE VIEW, cozy, yet you don't have that claustrophobic feeling, food very tasty, money well spent, our server Lena did not miss a beat with us very tentative, and accommodating. HEY TOURIST!!!!........when next you're in the World Financial Center do stop by, you'll LOVE IT..........Thank you Merchants River House, I'll see you soon. Cheers!"

  • "We decided on the Merchants River House after visiting the 9/11 memorial because of the view everyone talks about. The view did not disappoint but the restaurant itself is a bit small and cramped. We ordered appetizers that were pretty good, but when our meal came out, they forgot one person in our party of 6. Four of us ordered burgers, but somehow they just forgot one. They kept promising it was coming out any second, but by the time the rest of us were almost done with our food (as he insisted that we not wait for him), he had still not gotten his burger. When he finally did, it was almost completely raw inside. It was a big disappointment. They did not seem to notice our annoyance and did not apologize for the wait or lack of quality."

  • "I have always loved Merchants River House for the view--the food, not as much. Happy to report that they have some new menu items, including very good vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free items. I can't say the food now MATCHES the view because that would be difficult, but it has come a long way and the staff is (as always) friendly and charming. Extra points for asking us if it was a "special occasion of any kind." I love the Manhattan waterfront!"

  • "We ate here for brunch and it was great. Our server, Maya, was outstanding. Very attentive and knowledgeable. There were five of us and she was an excellent listener, remembering all of our orders which included a fair amount of substitutions. The food was better than expected and we all enjoyed our meal very much. We are looking forward to trying it again for dinner."

  • "The food is not great and neither the decor. The service is good and well trained but it lacks of food and ambiance. Being in Battery Park city with a view like the one it has it's a shame that it's not a top list restaurant in NYC"

  • "What a nice cozy place for either a date or dinner with friends. Great Ambience. GREAT views of the Hudson. Food was affordable and tasty."

  • "I called to get directions on my way to the restaurant and the maitra d' gave me horrible directions and when I got to the restaurant he stood and stared at me until I finally requested to be seated. The food was delicious but I did not need to put on a song and dance to find the place and then another performance just to be seated. The restaurant is not easy to find and I am not an explorer. The place was empty but the staff wasn't bussing tables after people left so they didn't have any clean tables for new groups to sit at."

  • "We were looking for a nice, casual, unpretentious place with good views and this fit the bill exactly. Food was good if unremarkable but the pace and attentativeness of the service was perfect for wbat we wanted: to sit and chat while having a liesurely dinner watching the ligbts of Jersey City and the traffic on the river. Nice time."

  • "Haven't been here in awhile, but it was as usual, it very nice! There were six of us, and sitting by the windows with the beautiful views is always wonderful! For some reason (maybe holiday parties?) they were out of malbec and cabernet wine!!! Beers, burgers and fries, and salmon were all great!! Nice prices and menu for kids! Waitress was wonderful - sadly she was all alone! Not noisy - so easy to have conversations! Definitely will be back - we all had a great time!"

  • "We went here on a Saturday afternoon for lunch after sight seeing to celebrate my 14 yr olds birthday. The restuarant is right on the water, you can see the Statue of Liberty and the food is great. The staff was friendly, and had a gluten free menu. It is a smaller casual charming place. I will definitely go again."

  • "We had a terrific Sunday brunch here yesterday. The staff was very polite, very helpful, and always smiling. The view from here just can't be beat. The food was excellent, and also a good value. We'll be back again soon!!!"

  • "Thanksgiving. A table was ready at the reserved time. The specials were very good, especially considering the reasonable cost. After we got past a distant hostess, the staff and service were fine. A dessert special, mixed berry cobbler, was perfect. After dinner, we took a walk alongside the river."

  • "I always enjoying going to Merchant Riverhouse with my family and friends. The food is great and it's the best place in NYC to watch the sunset."

  • "I made reservations for Thanksgiving dinner but what a mistake that was. I was told that there was no "dark meat" turkey. So reluctantly I ended up ordering a $12 salad to take home. It was SO skimpy that I could have gotten a nicer one at the deli. The raspberry dressing looked like bubble gum color. They need to do better in the food department or else the locals upstairs will stop going there. It's as simple as that. This neighborhood has a lot of Wall Streeters and financial people who don't mind paying but it must be good food. We've seen this restaurant change hands and we always saw it coming..."

  • "To eat here on Thanksgiving evening was not the best choice. The menu was not exciting and the staff felt like beginners"! I can't recommend this place, maybe for the view..!?"
    Dined on 11/28/2013
  • "Came here based on the fact that Leo ate here. Food was good but not outstanding. The artichoke and spinach dip was incredibly good. The location nice but not easy to find and forget trying to find parking. Staff friendly. No appetizer plates which was awkward. I would only come again to eat outdoors and enjoy the artichoke and spinach dip. Inside dining not that fun. Definitely an outdoors good weather location."

  • "You simply cannot get a panoramic view from the Statue of Liberty to Hoboken and beyond up the Hudson River, today, without renting a helicopter, and the food won't be near as good! Hard to find unless you know that it's around the back of South End Avenue on the River promenade. Friendly and warm in winter, nice patios in summer."

  • "Let me start by saying that I was a tourist when dining here. We made reservations without knowing the area and were pleasantly surprised with this hidden gem. We were there on a Friday evening and had no issue getting a table at the bar at 7:00, followed by our immediate seating for an 8:00 reservation. I assume that it's much busier during the day, as it's positioned at the bottom of an office building. The drinks were plenty and the bartender was great! As I remember, the food was also quite delicious. I ordered the mussels as my entree and it was quite a generous serving, with a wonderful light broth. I highly recommend it! If you're a foodie looking for something special, this might not be it, but it's the perfect neighborhood joint."

  • "this restaurant sits right next to the hudson river and has beautiful views, especially at sunset. food was very good and the atomosphere is quite cozy. the only negative was that the table next to us was so loud it was a huge distraction. still, that was not fault of the staff who were friendly and helpful. we will definitely be back next time we are staying in lower manhattan."

  • "Not bad, but too many other (better) choices nearby."

  • "Went there on Sunday for brunch with my parents & in laws. The service was awful. They didn't come to our table to take our orders, until we asked repeatedly. Then forget various items, never checked on us. The food was average. The views are nice, but the service guarantees that we will not be going back."

  • "This gem is a little hard to find, but definitely worth it. We went for a family birthday dinner and were all very pleased. We asked for and got a table right next to the window and were able to watch the sunset over the river - spectacular! Service was very attentive and every dish was delicious. Prices are very reasonable. Will definitely return!"

  • "If they only had lobster (not the roll, real lobster, as did their predecessor), it would be a perfect place. My favorite place to take newcomers and visitors to the city - and to come with friends."

  • "Great view; hard to have conversations due to close proximity of tables and to the kitchen."
