Located downtown in a historic building on the corner of Broadway and 4th Avenue, Merchants restaurant has stood the test of time by remaining one of the most well known restaurants in Nashville. The causal, street level Bistro is lively and spirited with it's black and white motif and great view. It’s a popular spot for lunch and often attracts many locals before or after any downtown event. The food is thoughtful, well-crafted and affordable. The bistro also features a creative bar program and is open until midnight on weekdays and 2 a.m. on weekends. On the second floor, Merchants restaurant features fine dining by Chef Jason Brumm, known for his playful yet refined take on southern cuisine. The dining room is open seven days a week from 5pm - 10pm. Whether it’s a business dinner or a wedding rehearsal, the privacy and ability to customize your menu allows Merchants to be a great option for your next private event.   • "We always go to Merchant's for dinner before the Predators and usually have a great experience. Arrived 10 minutes early for our reservation & were seated right away. Our order was taken within 3 minutes of sitting down & appetizer came out timely. ...Then, something went way wrong!. Waited over an hour for main entrees after appetizers were finished. No wait staff checked on us until hubby complained to hostess and then 5 minutes later to manager. Finally got food and had to woof it down to get to the hockey game on time. She did not offer to comp. us or reduce our bill in any way until we asked her to do so. This could have been handled so much better by the manager and wait staff. Not up to their usually standards this night!!!"

The food here is fairly good - and the bar is top notch (we normally eat in the downstairs bar area). The service however, was VERY RUSHED. We actually left so we wouldn't spend any more there on drinks because i didn't want to have to tip the service staff any more i did."

  • "My daughter and I arrived at Merchant. Few minutes early for our reservation. We decided to have a drink in the bar while waiting. The bartenders were very friendly and professional. We had a great time sipping drinks and nibbling on duck fat tater tots. Try them! We went upstairs for dinner and although the atmosphere is wonderful, the service and food...were not. My daughter had a difficult time sawing through her $34 steak. The server was..let's just say..snippy. We wished we had gotten a table downstairs in the more fun atmosphere. We will definitely be back...to eat in the bar!"

  • "It was the perfect location to sit down for a nice meal before exploring the night life of downtown. We were seated right on time. the service was great. Awesome recommendations were made. The baked cheese and deviled eggs were wonderful. I also had the botanist cocktail. For my entrée I ordered the Sweet Tea Pork Loin. It was incredible! I loved the food and the atmosphere."

  • "The down stairs has much of a diner feel with a bit of an upscale flair. We had the front 2 person booth in an alcove at the front window. Great for people watching. Gotta try the duck fat tater tots...just like you had in school...with an awesome crispness and sauces to die for. This is a must for people visiting...as noted by the lack of reservations at the last minute. Book ahead!! Also, if you like unique drinks...get the mad hatter or the botanist. Both are great!!!"

  • "We ate downstairs at Merchants on a Friday of a big concert in Nashville. It kinda of loud and it's fairly busy but it's a fun place to eat and food is wonderful. Make sure you have reservations for either floor or you will be waiting. Location is awesome for down town exploring after you have dinner... I will be back"

  • "We chose to eat in the downstairs bistro. It was overwhelmingly loud down there. The music was blaring and the noise from the bar was horribly loud. We had a table for five and couldn't hear ourselves talk. We asked the waitress to turn down the music but it never seemed to happen. On the positive side, the hostesses were very helpful with reservations beforehand. We had a few changes and they met all requests."

  • "We used to come here regularly in years past and were expecting to find the charm and atmosphere we remembered. We chose to eat in the downstairs bar area for its more casual and less costly atmosphere. A mistake. The noise level made it impossible to talk without raising our voices to an almost yell. We love the fact that it is an historic venue. The food choices downstairs are good and fine for a casual night out. The noise just made us want to run out and find another spot to dine."

I ordered the brisket and my friend ordered the pulled pork sandwich. Both were delicious!! Our service was fine - food came out quickly but, we didn't get our drinks refilled without asking. I thought it was a good value and delicious meal."

The service was great. After placing our order, we had our appetizer within ten minutes. We had our dinner within 15 minutes after ordering. The food was great. Good beer list.   • "This gem is right around the corner from Bridgestone Arena and is in a building that I believe started out years ago as a drugstore. It is interesting in that it has a bistro downstairs that serves essentially bar food, but very good bar food, and an upstairs that is dedicated to fine dining. My wife had a beef dish prepared from flank steak and I had the sea scallops. The presentation was excellent as was the preparation. We have eaten here many times, but this was our first visit since they changed chefs and redid the menu. I missed the beet salad from the old menu, but the new root vegetable salad was nice."

We had reserved the fine dining upstairs, it was very nice, but I think we would have preferred the ambience of the downstairs dining. Service was prompt and courteous, food was very good. Definitely a good dining spot in Downtown Nashville."

  • "had heard so many good things about Merchants downtown, and had good experience at Cool Springs. unfortunately was late for reserved time but staff kindly sat us upon arrival. it went downhill from there. the noise level from rock/jazz music where we sat was remarkable, we were never asked what we would like to drink, the desert pie was exceptionally hard. it wasnt the dining experience we had anticipated. dinner might be better but we'll probably go elsewhere."

  • "If you are looking for a nice restaurant in downtown Nashville MERCHANTS is a good choice. It is right across the street from TOOTSIES. The first floor looks like a1950's dinner all in black and white. Lots of booths. Great for families with kids. The upstairs is more of a fine dining experience. Softly lit, deeper colors. Excellent wine list. Great service by David. He had wonderful descriptions of specials and regular menu items. The duck soup appetizer was amazing. The root salad was different and a great blend of flavors and textures. The meat choices were good and nicely portioned. A delicious ending was the chocolate tart with peanut butter ice cream."

  • "We dined for the first time Downstairs. The menu is different but just as inviting as Upstairs. The guacamole was fine...but a bit bland; best left to a Mexican restaurant..but the brisket was outstanding! The staff was very accommodating to a gluten free substitute for the cornbread served with the brisket. One issue...we were enjoying our appetizers, about half way thru them, when our entrees were served. We asked for them to be served after we had finished out appetizers, which they agreed to do, but only after the waitress made a face at us for the request. A great meal, good value, considering downtown Nashville. Will definitely return."

  • "We had another great meal and time at Merchants but....honestly the server was a bit rude. Therefore the 15% gratuity....instead of my normal 18-20%. Focused on the next Sale...not a pleasant demeanor, way too serious. Maybe just a bad night for the server (we all have them) so will surely be back in the future....but could have been a really great experience with the right server. I'm sure we will be back."

  • "Merchants was a great start to our evening in Nashville. We were seated right away. We chose the downstairs to have dinner becasue we wanted something a little more casual. We had a great view of the action on Broadway. Our service and food was outstanding. We ordered the Baked Cheese for a starter. We ordered the sweet tea pork loin, fish tacos, and the Blackened Tilapia. It was all very good. We split a piece of pecan pie for dessert. It wasn't a very big piece of pie but enough for us to each have a bite."

  • "We were seated immediately and well taken care of throughout the meal. We ate in the bistro as we wanted a casual venue. The drinks were well made, though a little pricey. We would still go in just for drinks as they were worth it. Food was also good, but not exceptional, though I think the upper level may be more focused on the dining, while the bistro was an exceptional bar with good southern food. Fun atmosphere. Glad we made a reservation, as they were full with long waits for those coming in without a res. will go back next time we are in Nashville. We tried to make an after concert reservation, but they were already sold out for the late hours. Our waitress recommended another place and was very helpful."

It is right downtown and we a walk for a little while afterward. The valet parking is so convenient. We have dined upstairs and downstairs. We prefer downstairs mostly because of the difference in the prices. We have been going for years and will continue."

  • "Our waiter was new to the food & beverage world; yet, his service was exceptional. And he is striving to learn more than management teaches -- this is exceptional. Please don't dip off salt and pepper shakers so often -- if there's inadequate "room to shake" within, hardly anything comes out. this is a universal problem."
