Located downtown in a historic building on the corner of Broadway and 4th Avenue, Merchants restaurant has stood the test of time by remaining one of the most well known restaurants in Nashville. The causal, street level Bistro is lively and spirited with it's black and white motif and great view. It’s a popular spot for lunch and often attracts many locals before or after any downtown event. The food is thoughtful, well-crafted and affordable. The bistro also features a creative bar program and is open until midnight on weekdays and 2 a.m. on weekends. On the second floor, Merchants restaurant features fine dining by Chef Jason Brumm, known for his playful yet refined take on southern cuisine. The dining room is open seven days a week from 5pm - 10pm. Whether it’s a business dinner or a wedding rehearsal, the privacy and ability to customize your menu allows Merchants to be a great option for your next private event.   • "Made reservations with OT and were greeted and seated immediately. Of note was the banquette I was seated on was wobbly and a bit uncomfortable. We started with excellent cocktails - had a Old Fashioned that was among the best ever. Server was a bit slow in arriving, but apologetic for it. We started with duck fat tater tots and fried green tomatoes. Tater tots were... well tater tots - duck fat not noticed. Sauces with tots were great. Tomatoes - ice cold, in fact the portion I tried was frozen in the middle. We waited quite a while to get servers attention and pointed out tomato problem. New ones brought and comped for us. Chicken fried chicken was great, nice spinach and red potato mash. Would go back."

  • "Could you imagine Tootsie's deciding to have a jukebox in the front window instead of a crowded band? Well, sit on tired menus items, hire a serving staff that acts bored and indifferent and then price the "specialty of the house" about twice the value of the meal and you have the current Merchant's. The Market Price ($125) bone in Ribeye was dry aged alright and the top layer of the meet served was pretty good but the fat that was served as meat that was hid underneath was just that, seasoned fat. Main server was bored. Secondary serving staff was trying hard but they just couldn't overcome a tired restaurant in need of a kick in the kitchen. (and management) On a bright note the mashed potatoes and zucchini sides were very good."

  • "We were in Nashville for a few days and the temp was in the 90's. Very hot and humid. This was a real treat to get out of the downtown frenzy and relax over a nice lunch. We had made reservations so our table was ready when we arrived. The restaurant is very popular, so I would recommend making reservations. The food was good. My blackened talapia was excellent. My husbands pulled pork sandwich was good, but nothing to write home about. The fried green tomatoes were very good and came atop a spicy sauce. We didn't have dessert. The service was excellent. The waiter came around several times to make sure all was okay. Would come here again and maybe try the upstairs dining (it only opens in the evening)."

  • "The service was good as was the ambiance. We loved our cocktails. The beef tartare was ok but was accompanied with vinegar seasoned vegetables which made it almost unpalatable. Hard to go wrong with tartare but this dish did. Both of our entrees were super salty, to the point that it overtook the flavors of the meal."

  • "Arrived early and the bartender was super accommodating to my request - which I appreciate. When we were seated, I just couldnt get over how warm it was. Like usually I am freezing in restaurants but I was sweating in this one. I think they needed to put the AC up just a bit more. Food was great - had the blackened Tilapia and it was fantastic. Very crowded to definitely make a reservation."

  • "Really glam interior, especially for the honky tonkin part of town. Great location on the corner of 4th and Broadway so get a seat near the window for superb people watching. Very good cocktail list. Do not miss the tater tots, cooked in duck fat so they are super crispy. It can be a bit of a challenge to find a lot of healthy choices on the menu so do what I did and have a champagne cocktail and tater tots and then go to the gym later!"

  • "Met out of state friends there for lunch because I knew they'd enjoy the food and being on Broadway. Everyone loved their lunch except me. I stepped away from my Merchant standards and ordered the Chicken Salad Salad. The chicken salad was tasty and fresh but the presentation was far short of what I expect from Merchants. It was a huge ball of chicken salad on a small amount of greens. I won't order it again."

While we were in the downstairs bar, one of the bar tenders mentioned they have a hard time keeping the lower level cool with people coming in and out. Well, the temperature was alright downstairs, but upstairs in the "fine dinning" area, it was hot! The only other complaint is that the number of selections on the menu are very small and somewhat different."

  • "A new twist on southern comfort food! Try a half order of the duck fat tater tots and fried green tomatoes as an appetizer...they're delicious. As an entree consider the steak frites or brisket and ask for the house "M-57" sauce, It's a nice addition to the dish. The portions are plenty and the service was wonderful! "

  • "Visited Merchants for the first time this week. Our table was waiting, which was great since the restaurant was so busy. I ordered the steak frites medium rare, but the steak was well done, no hint of pink anywhere. The other guests had jambalaya which was good, not super spicy and the pulled pork BBQ sandwich, which was also good. I really liked the atmosphere so I would probably try it again."

  • "The food tasted great, but the service was lousy. The waitress forgot to put in our appetizer so it arrived just seconds before the entrees, and she refused to comp it. Don't forget to bring your ID for drinks, regardless of your age. I'm 60+ and the waitress refused to serve me. And trust me, as much as I would like to think I look young for my age, I know I don't look THAT young."

The one thing that we didn't note was that there are separate menus for the upstairs and downstairs dining areas. We enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere with hearty portions of fabulous food downstairs. We loved everything from the cute tins of popcorn at seating to the recommendations from our waitress. We would definitely visit again if in town. "

  • "Let me start by saying this was my second trip here and it was even better this time! When making a reservation, make sure you specify up or down (upstairs/downstairs) as the menus are different and not interchangeable. Slight confusion as I had called the night before to specify up, but they first tried to seat us down. No worries as there was a table ready and available up, but just make it a point to clarify when making your reso in the comments. The food here is without a doubt some of the best I have had in Nashville! Can't wait to come back!"

  • "Our first visit to Nashville, chose Merchant's on the recommendation of a friend. We were seated in a corner booth, perfect for people watching on Broadway. For an appetizer I ordered the tater tots cooked in duck fat, very disappointing, nothing special at all, I could have done this at home and the portion was extremely large. My husband had the southern fry: catfish, shrimp, okra, & pickles. OK tasting, but a little too heavily fried, and, again, a very large portion. My entree was the chicken fried chicken, mashed potato, spinach & gravy. All very good, once again, way too much food! My husband had the brisket which was a little tough. I can't remember a restaurant where we've left so much food on our plates. Disappointing!"

He also helped me select a wine choice for my date, which I had no clue about. My date ended up loving the wine. Overall the night was definitely memorable and enjoyed.   • " Out of town, I looked for a nice restaurant downtown....this fit the bill nicely! I ordered the skirt steak special and when it was served I could tell it wasn't skirt steak. Our waiter said he would check but he was pretty sure this was skirt steak....which I knew for a fact it wasn't! He returned & they had indeed run out of skirt steak and substituted a culotte (sp) steak instead, then as he was curtly turning to leave he mumbled something about "taking care of it". The bill was never adjusted and I had them box up the meat so I could donate it to the guy on the corner panhandling with his dog. Every other portion of the meal was excellent and I would go again, with the exception of possibly wanting a different waiter."
