Located downtown in a historic building on the corner of Broadway and
4th Avenue, Merchants restaurant has stood the test of time by remaining one of the most well-known restaurants in Nashville.

The causal, street level Bistro is lively and spirited with its black and white motif and great view. It’s a popular spot for lunch and often attracts many locals before or after any downtown event. The bistro also features a creative bar program and is open until 11:00 p.m. on weekdays and 1 a.m. on weekends.

On the second floor, Merchants restaurant features fine dining by Chef Barclay Stratton, delivering refined cuisine with a Southern touch. The dining room is open seven days a week from 5pm - 10pm.

The blueberry hand pies were mostly pie crust with very little blueberry filling. I would not order the hand pies again. We dined on the second floor and it was very noisy but much better than the first floor."

Our table overlooked the Broadway nightlife which was great for people watching between courses. Get a window seat if you like this option. The food was good but the portions on the small side. I recommend taking a cab or parking somewhere other than the restraint if you can. On-property parking is minimal. The valet parking was not as professional as it could be for this class of restaurant and the valet staff did not have valet management support when a problem occurred with another customer. Our waiter was excellent and attentive! Overall, the experience was great!"

  • "Grace of Golf Travel frequently reviews restaurants around the world and we highly recommend Merchant's! Enjoyed a quick dinner downstairs with the cheeseburger with pimento cheese and sweet potato fries. Outstanding! Grace ordered the fish tacos (someone needs to tell Southerners that you use corn tortillas with fish tacos) which she enjoyed. But the service was outstanding. The staff is well-trained to work as a team to make sure that your food is served hot and timely, but also to ensure that all your needs and wants are always met. Highly recommend this place as we are going back soon to enjoy an upstairs fine-dining dinner."

  • "This place has gone downhill in every respect since we were last there about 6-8 years ago. Seems to be a victim of the surging crowds inexplicably drawn to its Lower Broad address these days. What used to be a relatively quiet and most enjoyable experience has been reduced to just another "joint" on the carnival like atmosphere of Lower Broad. Might be better if they moved out to midtown. Too bad."

  • "We were seated on the second floor at our request. There was a group of approximately 25 guys so it was very hard to have a conversation with the other couple at the table...after they left they immediately sat another group of 25 guys so needless to say it was Loud! Started with the charcuterie board; this was horrible. The four entree's we selected were; trout (2), chicken and beef. It wasn't the worst food but it was not good either. I could not recommend it to someone else and I doubt I would return for dinner."

  • "Went for a 15th anniversary dinner. Atmosphere was modern, friendly, yet personal. Our server was very knowledgable about them menu and made great recommendations. Just the right amount of service. I had the blackened tilapia. The sweet potato hash was fantastic. My husband had the jumbalaya. It had a ton of chicken, he was hoping for more sausage and shrimp, as well as a little more heat. Both of is really enjoyed our meals and the atmosphere. Would definitely recommend!!"

  • "Could you imagine Tootsie's deciding to have a jukebox in the front window instead of a crowded band? Well, sit on tired menus items, hire a serving staff that acts bored and indifferent and then price the "specialty of the house" about twice the value of the meal and you have the current Merchant's. The Market Price ($125) bone in Ribeye was dry aged alright and the top layer of the meet served was pretty good but the fat that was served as meat that was hid underneath was just that, seasoned fat. Main server was bored. Secondary serving staff was trying hard but they just couldn't overcome a tired restaurant in need of a kick in the kitchen. (and management) On a bright note the mashed potatoes and zucchini sides were very good."

  • "Made reservations with OT and were greeted and seated immediately. Of note was the banquette I was seated on was wobbly and a bit uncomfortable. We started with excellent cocktails - had a Old Fashioned that was among the best ever. Server was a bit slow in arriving, but apologetic for it. We started with duck fat tater tots and fried green tomatoes. Tater tots were... well tater tots - duck fat not noticed. Sauces with tots were great. Tomatoes - ice cold, in fact the portion I tried was frozen in the middle. We waited quite a while to get servers attention and pointed out tomato problem. New ones brought and comped for us. Chicken fried chicken was great, nice spinach and red potato mash. Would go back."

  • "Great location in Lower Broad in the historic Merchant's Hotel. Place is very popular, good thing we had a reservation, people were still jammed in there pressed up against our table. Cocktails were tasty, pricey. Food was OK, not great, nothing was bad, but nothing was outstanding, not even the Duck Fat Tater Tots. The Bernaise Sauce was absurdly delicious, but it's pretty much a stick of melted butter, can't go wrong. They seem to try to make up for it with generous portion sizes. Deviled Eggs were just as good as at any picnic. The Southern Fry was plentiful, somewhat over-fried, thin pickles, okra, small shrimp were dry, the larger catfish pieces were all right."

  • "We were in Nashville for a few days and the temp was in the 90's. Very hot and humid. This was a real treat to get out of the downtown frenzy and relax over a nice lunch. We had made reservations so our table was ready when we arrived. The restaurant is very popular, so I would recommend making reservations. The food was good. My blackened talapia was excellent. My husbands pulled pork sandwich was good, but nothing to write home about. The fried green tomatoes were very good and came atop a spicy sauce. We didn't have dessert. The service was excellent. The waiter came around several times to make sure all was okay. Would come here again and maybe try the upstairs dining (it only opens in the evening)."

Hard to go wrong with tartare but this dish did. Both of our entrees were super salty, to the point that it overtook the flavors of the meal."

Like usually I am freezing in restaurants but I was sweating in this one. I think they needed to put the AC up just a bit more. Food was great - had the blackened Tilapia and it was fantastic. Very crowded to definitely make a reservation."

  • "Really glam interior, especially for the honky tonkin part of town. Great location on the corner of 4th and Broadway so get a seat near the window for superb people watching. Very good cocktail list. Do not miss the tater tots, cooked in duck fat so they are super crispy. It can be a bit of a challenge to find a lot of healthy choices on the menu so do what I did and have a champagne cocktail and tater tots and then go to the gym later!"
