Diner Reviews
  • "Went to this restaurant recently found the food average and no very flavoursome. Comparing to other oyster bars like Rodney's or fishshak in comparison can't keep to this. The menu needs to be improved but the service was ok."

  • "I went for dinner with my husband but I think this may be my new spot to go with the ladies. The staff are delicious, unpretentious men and they are well educated about their menu and bar and aim to please... unlike Rodney's in Yaletown. They treat everyone in the restaurant with the same passion and enthusiasm. I love when the food is exciting but the pricing and atmosphere is not stuffy. Well plated, thoughtful combinations and staff great with suggestions. A must try and just may turn into a good, regular standard for a drink and snack. Great bourbon selection, the gnochi, the roasted cauliflower, the chicken liver parfait, veal sweetbreads and of course their oysters are all highlights."

  • "Really enjoyed our experience! Took my boyfriend on a date night! Busy which is always a good sign! Enjoyed the food sooo much!!! Highly recommend the sweet potato butter with house made siracha! The service was great, our waitress told us what we were eating and was very friendly!! Drinks were delicious too! Enjoyed my elixir cocktail! New fav drink!!!!"

  • "Nice atmosphere, good food, amazing service! Liked the variety of the four course menu--baked oysters and the Ling cod were very tasty. Can't say enough about the incredibly attentive and friendly service. Definitely a place to go back to!"

  • "We had a great dinner at Merchant's Oyster Bar - the owner is passionate about every dish which is all locally and in house made. Our only negative was the service was slow - took quite a while to get drinks and food. We weren't in a rush but if there was some constructive criticism that would be to improve the service. We would recommend Merchant's as every dish is a great experience."

  • ""The only good thing about this place is the oysters and only during the happy hour. Otherwise, the place is terribly overpriced. The portions are tiny (their flank steak is more like a third of a steak and priced at about $22), the menu choices are few and the flavors ill-combined. A dinner for four cost us $240 (includes a couple of drinks each) and we walked away hungry! Also, the place plays music very loudly and a conversation is near impossible. All in all, it was a disappointing evening and one during which we all lost weight and some of our good humour.""

  • "I was recommended to try this restaurant by a work colleague and I am so glad I did! My fiancé and I went last weekend and had a fantastic time. The food was a little pricey as a lot of the options on the set menu had additional amounts to be paid, but I would say it was all totally worth it. I highly recommend the baked oysters and beef tartare! The waitress was very attentive and friendly and helped to make the experience relaxing. Definitely recommended!"

  • "was there for their buck a shuck, oysters were great! but unfortunately the rest of our food came really slow and the portion size was a little small. or maybe i was just expecting too much. had the chef adjust one of our items for our son, got them to just use butter and cheese for their gnocchi instead of the black garlic sauce that was on the menu, something more simple, and they charged me $1 more for that, was a little shocked. anyhow, i'd go back for the buck a shuck but that's it."

  • "Had a great girls night at Merchant's Oyster Bar! The service was outstanding - attentive, helpful and friendly. It was a fantastic causal place to go for a yummy dinner with friends. We will definitely be back!"

  • "Everything is made in house. I could taste it in my hollandaise sauce that came with my eggs benedict. The flavour combinations are often well paired. Service is really good since the place is moderately small. Not a place when you'd want to take more than 6 people at a time. In the summer, the little patio is open for bar-style dining. Oysters have been fantastic, not a single one off. Sometimes there are shell bits in there, but the taste wins me over. It's a place I'd go back again, especially when they are doing their special menus with beer or cider pairings. The menu and oysters change from time to time. I wanted the duck waffles as listed on their website, but it's not on the menu. If you love a dish, go back again soon."

  • "Had dinner at Merchant's on Sunday. The buckashuck was fabulous; super fresh, local oysters at $1 each, you can't lose. Our meals were really tasty, but definitely on the smaller size as some other reviewers have noted. I like the fact that they use local and fresh ingredients. Service was great. I would love to go back again."

  • "Group of friends were there for brunch and it absolutely amazing. Lobster Benny and steak & eggs were beyond what we expected. Eggs were done to perfection. $1.50 per shuck during brunch. Sever was very nice and gave us an extra free half dozen of fresh oyster because our food was taking longer than usual. Will definitely come back again!"

  • "Had a wonderful birthday dinner - the food was interesting, delicious and subtle. The charcuterie is particularly notable. The kitchen was slammed the night we were there so took wel over an hour to receive the first course but after that service was great"

  • "Reservation for 6 (recommended for larger group). Everyone enjoyed the food. I would not say it was outstanding but quite decent. If an option for 3.5 stars that would be my choice for food. Different, slightly nicer, menu than usual pubish/pizza/casual menus on the drive. I had 1/2 dozen raw oysters & they were delicious. The others at the table were not big oyster eaters and were happy with their menu choices. Some of the dishes were on the smaller side but that works perfect if you order the one of their various set menus - otherwise you'd be too full. Big thumbs up to our server, she was great. The dessert (apple sort of pie) was the only thing that did disappoint - perhaps more apples and some ice cream/whip cream would improve it."

  • "We took my daughter for her birthday. The restaurant was full and as a result was quite noisy. It was difficult to hear even across the table. The food was good, service was a bit slow but could have been that they were super busy with only 2 servers."

  • "We really enjoyed the Dine Out menu and hope that it is an indicator of the general menu. Protein serving size for entree a bit on small size but otherwise really good. Lots of locally sourced food. Loved the very helpful waiter who contributed to a fun dining experience. There is a great synergy with all the staff. The restaurant is also suitable for those who do not fancy oysters - lots of other choices on the menu."

  • "Oyster was good, but portion was too small. I usually can't finish a set menu, but I did at this time. My husband wanted to go to Mcdonald to have more after dinner at murchant's oyster bar. Was it kind of the French restaurant? I was dissapointed and the price should be $18, not $28."

  • "Impolite waitress fussy about us being 10 minutes late when the restaurant was basically deserted at 17:30. Despite the 2 tables right next to us were unoccupied at all time, we're brought to a table on wet floor with smelly leaking water. Complicated menu with a lot of hidden add-on prices. Entree portion was tiny. Fish was tasty, yet steak was rough. Not recommended."

  • "My husband and I decided to try Merchant's during dine out. We had the $28 menu each plus one dozen oysters ( additional $27.00) The portions were extremely small. The Flank steak was about two inches by one inch. This was our main. It came with one baby carrot and three slices of baby potato - did not equal one whole nugget potato. Our bill was over $100.00 Had one beer and two diet cokes. I am not a big eater, but I was not full and my husband was starving. We left Merchant's and went to another restaurant for a appetizer and dessert to fill us up."

  • "when we entered the room , there has an alcohol smell in the whole room, i know it is a bar , but it is earlier night, so how can that happened? then the food comes speed, we can have a good time to digest each course of the dish, as the gap between each dish are huge. Last but least, i tried the 3rd course , which is something including apple, in it there was something fried i thought it was fried chicken be over cooked. i just don't understand myself, if someone cooked poorer than me , why i bother pay them and asked them to make me unhappy."

  • "Me and husband spent our 2014 first DineOut dinner at Merchant's last Saturday. The atmosphere was great at this a small cozy neighbourhood restaurant; we were so excited to try their DineOut there. However, the first course, the clam chowder was a disappointment. It was very salty and small portion, which was with extra $2 charge. Our biggest disappointment was the entree, I had the worst steak and veal ever there, the steak was very difficult to cut and cheer, and the fatty veal made me lost my appetite. Very disappointed about their Dine Out menu, and shame to them since their oyster is very good."

  • "Went for dine out, had never heard of it, but live in the area. What a gem! Oysters were perfectly shucked and prepped, beef tartare was amazing, and the steelhead trout was perfectly cooked. On top of great food, service was super personable and knowledgeable. Will be going back again!"

  • "It is obvious that the chef absolutely loves what he does because the food is so delicious and unique. We enjoyed everything we ate, especially the squash ravioli. My one complaint is the portions were quite small. When something tastes that good, you really want more than just a few bites. I was a bit confused by the charcuterie plate that had a yummy selection of pate, mustard, pickles, salami and another cured meat that came with just 4 scrawny thin pieces of bread. It just seemed really cheap. We asked for more bread and it was happily supplied free of charge, but still seems odd to start off with just 4 tiny pieces. I also found the food service to be a bit slow. I"

  • "This was my introductory visit to this little gem. Already a fan of Rodney's, Chewie's, and Monk's, I'd say Merchant's may top the list. While the environment doesn't have the frenzy feel of Chewie's or Rodney's, that's not a bad thing. The oysters were fantastic (Chef's Creek were the Happy Hour special), the martinis were extremely well prepared, the service was personable and perfectly timed, and Doug the proprietor made an effort to make sure we were receiving all we were looking for. I'll definitely be back for a full meal, and soon."

  • "Not bad for a first time experience. The hostess/waitress is welcoming and inviting. Although there were mix up with the order, but the energy of the place and people had made it up. However, I would hope to see more in the menu the future, and also not be needing to spit out too much shell crumbs from gulping the oysters. But overall fabulous!"

  • "The service is lousy, the food is slow, its very noisy, the drinks are over priced and when they mess up... "I don't know what to say." I'm pretty sure that's what the waitress said... It was hard to hear."
