A word from Mercato
Focusing on market-fresh, Italian-inspired food at 1216 Spruce Street inhabits the old Camac Food Market building, a historic space that has long stood vacant on the corner of Camac and Spruce Streets, just East of Broad St.

Mercato infuses slow cooking traditions of Old World Italy with an experimental style and bold take on new Italian American cuisine, placing primary importance on using ingredients that are at their peak that day.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was disappointing and the restaurant was packed to the brim with tables that were hard to squeeze by. I came with out-of-town friends who are always excited to check out another great Philadelphia restaurant. But all of our dishes were bland - lacking fresh veggies or interesting flavors. The server was attentive enough but generally unfriendly. With all of the great restaurants in Philly and all the BYO options, we will not be going back."

  • "A group of us came and had a very nice dinner. The setting is intimate and very nice, and everything we ordered was tasty."

  • "Everything was wonderful...but they forgot that we ordered anything!"

  • "Every dish we had was great with plenty of attention to detail in creating cohesive dishes using fresh vegetables and nice sauces. The ambiance was not very pleasant. The open kitchen had poor ventilation so the dining room got very smoky. The front door was opened when the staff realized what had happened but it was too late. We had lingering odor going to the theatre right after dinner. My next visit will require outdoor seating when weather permits."

  • "It seems like only regulars get the good seats in places like this. Wonderful byob with excellent food and great charm. However be prepared to pack in like sardines."

  • "It has taken me 6 months to get to Mercato and I was upset I haven't been sooner. Six of us and we tried 80% of the menu, phenomenal. Small space but comfortable. Service was friendly, knowledgable, and fun to talk with and learn from. I will be back to Mercato within the month and everyone I was with wants back as well."

  • "I have been to Mercato about a dozen times, and the food is always fresh, well presented, and delicious."

  • "This was my second time here and it was amazing. Try the grilled artichoke! Had their signature pasta, short rib ragu, sooo good! Had a great time. Love BYOBs"

  • "Food was delicious! Wait staff very courteous. Can't wait to return!!!"

  • "We were seated, and given glasses for our alcohol. We ordered the pork belly salad and bruschetta special to start;both were good. My problem is the server took forever to come back to our table to take our entrée order, and there were only 3 other tables there at the time. He did'nt come back till we were finished the apps which left us waiting for the dinner entrees. We had the steak, scallops, spicy crab linguine, and veal dishes. Each dish was good, but nothing stood out. We also ordered the gelato trio, Panna cotta, molten chocolate cake, and marscapone cheesecake. We enjoyed the gelato immensely, but everything else was so so. I would come back to try future dishes. I hope service will be better next time."

  • "IMAGINATIVE MENU, WELL PREPARED. BYOB. GREAT FOR PRE THEATER/CONCERT. TWO BLOCKS FROM WILMA AND VERIZON HALL. PRETTY NOISY AFTER 6:30 P"

  • "Eric was our waiter and was phenomenal! Attentive without being pushy or intrusive. Hosteds was very accommodating as well, don't know her name but went and looked/found my missing scarf! Great food, exceptional service!"

  • "One of our favorites (actually, its our favorite!) Cioppino that we have had- in Philly or anywhere! Andthe sspicy crab linguine is incredible if it is on the menu that night. Everyone knows it can get a little loud and boisterous in there... but that is part of the family and friendly atmosphere and charm."

  • "Great meal on Saturday night. All of the food was delicious. The grilled artichoke appetizer and broccoli rabe with meatball and sausage side - yummy. The scallops and risotto were so good. Best meal in a long time. Not fancy and tables close to each other. You go here for the food."

  • "Such a warm, cozy atmosphere with an open kitchen. We enjoyed all the dishes we ordered, grilled artichoke which is hard to find, a delicious striped bass special in a hearty but light broth and the skirt steak was made to perfection. . The service was terrific and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves great fresh food!!!"

  • "We really enjoyed dining at Mercato. We will definitely be back again."

  • "Get yourself a reservation because Mercato can fill up fast. It is mostly two tops that get rearranged to fit parties of different sizes. Food was delicious. I had a steak that was prepared perfectly and the desserts are yummy. The noise level will pick up fast as the tables fill in, so this is not a quiet, romantic spot unless you go very early."

  • "I live in California and whenever I am in Philly me and my friends make it a point to eat here for dinner. It is small crowded loud and noisy and my kind of place. The food quality remains extremely high I was super pleased with the Brussel sprouts with pine nuts and the chalk board pan roasted salmon, and I adore the grilled whole artichoke actually 3 halfs. And the best thing here is their BYOB policy, you bring the wine and they supply glasses and open it for you- This also keeps us coming. Highly recommended I am sure you will love the place too."

  • "Somehow we missed that this restaurant is cash only -- TAKE CASH WITH YOU!!!"

  • "Have been several times and I have never had a bad meal, nor have we been disappointed. Highly recommended."

  • "Food was great, but service was slow. It was a busy night and it was very noisy, but other than that, it wasa great experience."

  • "This place is usually great, but the main dishes were sub-par last week."

  • "This place was amazing. It was charming. The food was delectable. The service was outstanding. Everyone was so personable. What a great little gem of a restaurant. Definitely will return. A fantastic dining experience that exceeded my expectations."

  • "This Byob served us the best tuna tartare ever, especially for a non-seafood house. Nice friendly service, helpful, not intrusive. Varied menu. Decent portion sizes. Nice fresh food with great taste. Accommodated a picky friend by adjusting dish without adding time. Lots of large groups that night of all ages having fun over good food. Unpretentious. Delicious. Would recommend to anyone."

  • "Love the food and service but the noise level was so loud on a Saturday nite we couldn't wait to get away from it."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "The food is AMAZING! The restaurant is definitely cramped and you are touching shoulders with your neighbor, but in the end the food makes up for any lost points for atmosphere!"

  • "Menu and food were outstanding. If dining on a weekend evening, prepare to feel like you're packed in a sardine can with a noise level that will require you to shout at your companions."

  • "The food here is always wonderful; however it is difficult to hold a conversation,"

  • "Hearing great reviews about Mercato, I reserved a table for 6 to celebrate my wife's birthday after a show on Sunday. We started out with the cured cheese and meat antipasti, highly recommended! The main courses we selected can be only described as outstanding. The skirt steak top with parmesan and sprinkled with creamy balsamic was delicious as was the pyramid pasta and scallops. The feast didn't end there. Next came the desserts, started with a candle in the molten chocolate cake, my favorite. Followed by sweet tooth paradise - cheese cake, tiramisu, and table favorite - trio of Gelato. For those food lovers looking for a great dining experience - Mercato is a must ."

  • "I met my sister at Mercato and enjoyed the best cioppino ever; cooked to perfection with an amazing broth and the most delicious crusty bread to absorb it. Our entire dinner was really wonderful. The service was perfect, although it was crowded and people were waiting at the door to be seated, no one rushed us nor did anyone ask if we were "still working on it" as we neared the end of our dinner. Plates were taken away with respect to a relaxed dining experience - very European, in that regard. It's a small place, so if you don't like chatter and a snuggy fit, it's not for you. We loved it and felt the energy of people out enjoying a truly delicious meal! Kudos, we'll be back:)"

  • "Food is excellent, stop your search now (before you find something else that looks good - will not be as good)."
    Dined on 2/28/2014
  • "I had put in the comments asking for a surprise candle to be put on the dessert and our server was well aware of this as when I asked him about it during a "bathroom break" he acknowledged that he knew already and had it ready to go :D Fantastic!"

  • "The food here was truly amazing. My boyfriend and I did the four course tasting menu and each course was delicious. My only issue was how small the place is so it's a very tight fit. It wasn't really that big a deal, I will still come back here."

  • "We had a salmon special and the scallops. All was delicious. Also shared the market salad - I thought it was overdressed which covered up all the fresh flavors. It was also quite small for $10.50. Just adding a another handful of greens would have cut the dressing a bit and allowed a little more for sharing. We also shared choc. molten cake which was so good. Overall a nice experience. As everyone says it is small and close but I think that is just part of the experience of eating in a city restaurant."

  • "Outstanding food, outstanding service!!! All of the dishes were excellent. The tasting menu, $48 for 3 large courses and dessert, is a bargain."

  • "startling to find a cash-only no-wine restaurant but the food was very good."
    Dined on 2/24/2014
  • "Market salad- the name doesn't do it justice: shredded black kale, roasted butternut squash, cranberries, hazelnuts and more was delicious with lots of different textures and taste. Then the cioppina thick (by reduction ) Italian bouillabaisse that was filled with shrimp, large tender scallops and more ranks among the best fish stews I have had anywhere. The 2 dishes in a cold damp night made a totally satisfying meal!"

  • "Loved the food and the service was great. Unfortunately the kitchen ventilation is lacking as all of left with our clothes reeking of same and that was a big disappointment."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "Always excellent meal!! Vibrant scene - best for 2-4 people because of noise. Highly recommend!"
