A word from Mercato
Focusing on market-fresh, Italian-inspired food at 1216 Spruce Street inhabits the old Camac Food Market building, a historic space that has long stood vacant on the corner of Camac and Spruce Streets, just East of Broad St.

Mercato infuses slow cooking traditions of Old World Italy with an experimental style and bold take on new Italian American cuisine, placing primary importance on using ingredients that are at their peak that day.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Antipasto plate was terrific. The house-roasted tomatoes were particularly successful. Squid ink pasta with crab/tomato had perfect texture. Pea/mushroom risotto was very good, but would have been better with a little more liquid. Affogato was disappointing; lower espresso:ice cream ratio. Not more ice cream, just less espresso. Very nice meal."

  • "The food was good, nothing special but good. I love their cheese specially their goat cheese"

  • "I am sorry I waited so long to get to this gem. What a perfect restaurant. The good is amazing. We had scallops and salmon and shared the grilled artichoke. Delicious. Great service. Will be back soon."

  • "One of our favorite Italian/BYO's in the city. Always tremendous food."

  • "We have dined at Mercato many times and have never been disappointed. The menu is well rounded and the nightly specials add a necessary, finishing touch to the possibilities. There is always variety with the special presentations indeed being something different and enjoyable. The servers are knowledgable about the the dishes, their content and their preparation. The kitchen is able and willing to make the changes necessary for special dietary needs and wishes. Of special notice are the homemade pastas - always al dente - and the seafood which has never been overcooked or had its taste masked by overwhelming sauces. There is a lot to like and remember at Mercato!"

  • "My wife and I ate at Mercato about 5 years ago and although we promised we would return we never did until last night. And what a memorable experience. The food was as excellent as we remembered."

  • "Three of us ordered the dinner tasting menu recently and enjoyed the experience, sampling three choices of each of four courses. The grilled octopus appetizer was bright and delicious; the antipasti offered a melange of flavors and textures. Risotto was meltingly delicious and filling. The grilled skirt steak was flavorful with rosemary, but somewhat chewy. Panna cotta was ethereal, and our favorite sorbet was the blueberry. We had more than enough food, leaving some behind as we hurried to a show. Bottom line, we'd eat there again happily."

  • "I had been to Mercato on two previous occasions and had wonderful food. This time we had 5 in our party and all were hugely disappointed. My Salmon special was ok but the Veal Milanese and Chicken Cacciatore were very bland and 3 people out of 5 didn't even finish their meal. Maybe it was an off night or you had a new chef but either way I miss the old Mercato."

  • "Food was creative and service was attentive. Some fabric on the walls is needed to mitigate intense noise level. Weather permitting, I would only come back if I could dine outside."

  • "We came to Mercato's based on a friends recommendation. We chose to sit outside and enjoyed the local traffic and people. The meals were excellent and the service was great. We definitely will return for additional visits when we come to Philadelphia to see a show or a concert."

  • "I absolutely love Mercato! The food is nothing short of amazing, I clean my plate every time I come. Love that its byo. The only downside is tables are pretty close together but thats sort of the vibe they go for anyways. You can't leave this place unhappy."

  • "The food was good, but the menu offerings for August were strange. The Short ribs w ragu were tasty, but heavy. The daily special "gnocchi" would have worked as an appetizer- not enough flavors to support a main course billing. The fig butter bruschetta were too sweet - and if you are serving bruschetta without a description, most people will expect a refreshing tomato salad one. Good antipasti although again w/ the fig butter, good scallops, good charcuterie. I had very high expectations- they were almost met."

  • "Unfortunately my boyfriend and I were very disappointed in our meal. My veal was over breaded and turned into a messy pile of breading and potatoes after a few bites. The antipasti was too mushy and the flavors didn't blend well together. His steak was well cooked and I'm happy to say he liked his dish. It's a shame because we really wanted to like everything."

  • "We enjoyed eating here. The food was very good and fresh and it's a nice little neighborhood experience.. We hope to be able to return to the restaurant in the future. It's location is also very good if you are going to the theater."

  • "The corn risotto was way too sweet. But the artichoke and special salmon were good, and the octopus was excellent. Service was good, and very accommodating to special needs."

  • "Cute restaurant but The tables were just too close together. The people next to us had to get up so I could use the restroom. Tables on both sides were so close that you heard all conversation and had absolutely no chance of a private conversation. Just too many people too close to enjoy my dinner."

  • "Been here a few times, always a good experience, but this last visit was disappointing. Service was the worst I have experienced there, but I will go back. The food is great, even though our last time there we had a cold dish, and service is generally quite excellent. Plus, a BYOB with fantastic food is a big WIN!"

  • "We dined at Mercato for the first time the other night and found it to be a nice, friendly neighborhood venue. The service was attentive, knowledgeable and professional. Our food was outstanding and my wife and I both enjoyed our selections. Being able to have one of our favorite wines with dinner was a real plus. Be aware Mercato is cash only venue, so be prepared for that. The only negative we had was the noise level was very high for the biggest part of our meal but we will return."

  • "We've been to Mercato many times and it keeps getting better. Hoof, fish, shellfish, or fowl; it's all done right."

  • "We ate here our last visit to Philly and made a point of coming back. The food was superb. The restaurant is noisy but what Philly restaurant isn't? We will try to eat here on every future visit!"

  • "The food at Mercato never disappoints. The skirt steak with potatoes, artichokes & parmesan with a balsamic reduction is just incredible. Appetizers were also good, although I do think the bruchetta bread is too thick/heavy -- I literally had to use a knife to cut it up. It would be better thinner and toasted. The service was very friendly although a little slow. I really wish they'd do something about the acoustics - you can barely hear yourself talk much less your dining partner. That being said, the food is so good I keep going back!"

  • "I was able to make a reservation for 2 late in the afternoon, which was nice considering when we arrived the place was full aside from a table or two. The space is charming--open view through large windows, tin ceiling tiles, wood tables...really inviting. I will say that inside the acoustics can get pretty loud, as it is small and has an open kitchen. This definitely didn't distract from our experience, though, & you can sit outside. The menu was immediately engaging, and we couldn't pick between the lovely assortment, leading us to the tasting menu. If you love to eat and have the appetite, go for it. One of the best meals I've enjoyed in a long time. Server was knowledgeable and inviting, beverage service is BYO & casual. Loved it."

  • "It is a shame because the food is good. Cash only is a big minus."
    Dined on 7/22/2014
  • "We chose to eat Outside and it was very nice. The restaurant is small so outside offered us a little more room. The food was good and everyone enjoyed their meal. I have eaten there several times but i enjoyed the outside dining the most."
    Dined on 7/21/2014
  • "At Mercato, the seating area is tight and disturbingly loud. I would only recommend going there if you can secure outside seating. However, if you are not a dog lover, beware that they are welcome, and could be sitting right next to you while you are trying to enjoy your meal. Overall, both the food and service were good."

  • "We had a wonderful meal!! All five of us!! Food was delicious and service was great! We sat by the big window near the front of the restaurant and the window was taken out! Wonderful atmosphere impart due to beautiful night."

  • "Food and general ambience of this neighborhood BYON continues to be excellent. However, on a rainy night when the front windows are closed (and streetside dining is not an option) the noise inside is truly unbearable. The relentless din dwarfed the excellent appetizers (grilled artichokes for instance) and superb entrées (skirt steak and pyramid pasta)."
    Dined on 7/15/2014
  • "The food was great, (I had the night's special fish) but the room was so noisy that it was distracting. There were four of us, and we had wanted to talk and this was a bad choice for us. We all had a sore throat from trying to talk over the noise when we left. We wished we had sat outside. Maybe we'll come back at an off time."
    Dined on 7/15/2014
  • "Great BYOB, but the noise level was high and so it is difficult to go with a group and hear each other. The ceiling appeared metallic which didn't help acoustics"
    Dined on 7/14/2014
  • "Food was not great. Too salty diver scallop risotto, skirt steak tasted like vinegar, not too mention it was so hot inside"
    Dined on 7/13/2014
  • "My wife and I recently visited Mercato on a Friday evening to celebrate our Anniversary. The location is good and the restaurant interior has a comfortable welcoming look and feel. My wife ordered the Marlin special and I had sauteed scallops over gnocchi (the chef accommodated my request to substitute for the risotto). The food was very good to excellent. However, the noise level from other patrons was terrible. The acoustics in the room were extremely poor. The couples on either side of us felt the same. Recommended if you want good food with little to no conversation."

  • "Love the artichokes and muscles. People working there are happy and excellent in service. It can be a bit noise because it's so small but we like the vibrant atmosphere. We sit outside when a table is available. BYOB so your money is spent on excellent and high quality food. It's our favorite place in the city."

  • "Mercato is by far a neighborhood gem that has grown into a center city favorite. The restaurant really cannot be beat, when you look at the food, value, ambiance and service. There are many italian byob's in the city, but few can carry the quality of food and charm of this place. Try the tasting menu. It really is a great deal at $48/person. You literally get to try anything on the menu. Service is great too. Attentive without being pushy or overbearing. Our party never felt rushed. Which was refreshing, especially for a small BYOB like this."
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "$48 for excellent 4 course prix fixe with many choices for each course...can't be beat, as the quality is consistently excellent..and the menu full of choices. Could use better wineglasses...as this place warrants a good bottle and is BYOB, a real plus. Each course was satisfying to all at our table (4 of us). Good ingredients, thoughtful recipes...and attractive presentation with large portions..none of the tapas-style tiny portion that create frustration as much as anything."

  • "After several trips to Mercato, out most recent (this past Saturday) was the least impressive. The bruschetta was almost bland. It was OK, but certainly nothing to write home about. My scallops were the star of the evening. They were well seasoned and perfectly cooked. My wife's chicken cacciatore was mediocre. Again, nothing to write home about. Overall a good meal, but far from spectacular."
    Dined on 7/5/2014
  • "Great food, but very crowded and excessively noisy. So loud that we could not have a conversation within our group."
    Dined on 7/3/2014
  • "It had been a long time since my last visit. I was surprised that the menu has not changed materially in years. And I had forgotten about the noise level, which required my friend and I to yell at each other the entire night. The food was excellent, but the noise level detracted significantly from my enjoyment of the experience."
    Dined on 7/2/2014
  • "High noise, high charm , great food. Remember to bring cash. Byob is great with wine stores in the hood to get whatever you desire. What a pleasure. Intend to return whenever we're in town."

  • "Food and vibe were fantastic. Creative menu and the byob aspect lets everyone put their own spin on the occasion"
