We have been going to Mercato since 2007 when I lived in Washington, DC and my boyfriend in NY. Phily was our halfway meeting place and we stumbled upon Mercato randomly, but we are so happy we did. We visit almost everytime we visit Philly. We both live in NY now but have such fond memories of Philly, many that include Mercato, that we visit Philly often. It is an added bonus that it is byob. Servers and staff are awesome. Menu is amazing. Check out the gay piano bar (mix of straight/gay patrons) Tavern on Camac down the block in alley after dinner. Great neighborhood.

A bit disappointed at the service. Our table outside was very wobbly and all the glasses and wine bottle would keep sliding on the table top. A waiter tried to help us until my husband found something to stabilize the table. They did not check in with us to see how our meal was either. I did enjoy the food but would probably sit inside the next time.

A couple, who were seated after us, at a table about a foot away from ours, knew the staff. They received extra plates prior to us receiving appetizers, in addition to little extras from the kitchen and staff throughout their dining experience. I wouldn't have had an issue with this sort of special treatment, had we been made to feel just as valuable as patrons. However, we were left in the dust in comparison! Water was never refilled, appetizers & entrees arrived cold, we were never checked in on, I never received my coffee...just a really disappointing dining experience, that I am certain would not have been the same had we not been next to friends of the staff. The second-rate treatment has left me thinking we probably won't be back.

  • Dined on top of strangers
    OpenTable Diner Since 2013
    Dined on 9/13/2014
Mercato did not have our reservation for 2 ready, and made us wait for a specific table that was next to an open 4 person table. After 10 minutes, the hostess became impatient and separated the 4 person table (#2 2 person tables squeezed together) by about 1 inch, as that was all the space available. She then sat us down and another group of 2, all while banging their table into ours just to allow them to squeeze by to sit. The restaurant was already way too loud to even hear, but to add insult to injury, they sat the group of 2 right on top of us, as though we were all supposed to dine together. Thank you for making us wait for a table that was open the entire time, and for sitting us centimeters away from strangers on our date. Terrible.

Let me first say that the food was incredible. However, the tables were so close together that they needed to be moved for me to fit out of the back to move my 5'5, 135lb body from the booth. My 6'5 boyfriend was jostled and bumped over and over again. It's a shame because the food was amazing.

I was excited to go to Mercato because of all of the good reviews I have heard and seen. However, it was way more cramped and loud than I had imagined, and that that definitely took something away from the experience. The food was good and overall, the waitstaff was attentive, but we did had to ask twice for our check.

I chose the restaurant because it was BYO and close to the Forrest. We were celebrating my wife's 50th with dinner and a show. It's too tight in this smaller-sized restaurant for a "romantic" dinner, but the food was fantastic. The quality and creative flair of the food made it one of the best meals I've had. Reasonably priced and kind, attentive service.

Had a group of seven ladies out for our monthly dinner during Restaurant Week. It was very busy and loud, but that sort of atmosphere doesn't bother our group. Our server was great and attentive. Mercato has one of the better Restaurant Week menus and they include specials in the deal. Our favorite dishes were the fontina stuffed meatballs and pyramid pasta. Overall a good experience.

I went to Le Castagne for the first time yesterday for an early dinner. The staff there were very attentive and courteous. Also, the servings were a nice size and each course was served in a timely fashion. As for the atmosphere, it was small and quaint. It makes a great spot to eat outdoors european style. I enjoyed the Fontina Meatballs and the Panna Cotta the most.

    Dined on 9/7/2014
For the first time in many years of dining at Mercato, I was disappointed for the first time. I was the first seating for restaurant week, and my pasta was undercooked. It was very hard to eat because it was about 5 minutes away from al dente. I did not say anything at the time because, like many of the patrons, I had theatre tickets and couldn't wait for a re-do. What was inside the pasta was what I have come to expect at Mercato, which was quality and deliciousness. The mousse was one of the best I've had anywhere. So, not a perfect meal, because I was disappointed at undercooked pasta, but not a complete failure.

Mercato has been on my "i want to go list" for quite some time. The wait was worth it. The triangle lobster pasta was amazing as was the octopus salad. The salmon special was amazing as well. Our server Larry was extremely friendly, informative and made our dining experience at Mercator a great one. We will definitely be back. Mercato got our vote this time for a new place to try and we were not disappointed! We ate outside and it was a nice evening to be entertained by the bustle of the city. My husband got the grilled octopus appetizer and it was so tender. We also tried the rustic bruschetta which was a lovely combination of flavors. The four different entrees and three desserts were enjoyed by all. The service was just perfect with timing and professionalism, getting us in and out to the theater on time while never feeling rushed. Would definitely go again!

Willing to give this place a second chance. We had a 'later' reservation and had to wait 30 min to be seated, then got a rushed service. Main course showed up while we were enjoying the first course, then some early finished meals were whipped away while others finished and then had the doggie bag placed on the table while trying to finish. However, the food was very good so we'll give it another try...with an earlier reservation of course.

Our experience was less enjoyable than we hoped because we were shoehorned into a crowded space that was too loud to carry on a conversation unless we were willing to yell like the rest of the patrons. We also waited for over 15 minutes to be acknowledged by any member of the staff - hostess wasn't anywhere to be found. Food was good but not worth the annoying atmosphere. And we found out at the end of the meal that it was cash only - nothing like hunting for an ATM in the rain. Think we'll choose a different popular restaurant next time.

This is a very popular place with a BYOB policy and cash only. One had their signature dish of short rib and ricotta gnocchi that was excellent and ample. One had the seared scallops and risotto with peas. Scallops were slightly overdone - somewhat chewy and the risotto was sticky. We find that there are better places nearby.

Antipasto plate was terrific. The house-roasted tomatoes were particularly successful. Squid ink pasta with crab/tomato had perfect texture. Pea/mushroom risotto was very good, but would have been better with a little more liquid. Affogato was disappointing; lower espresso:ice cream ratio. Not more ice cream, just less espresso. Very nice meal.

We have dined at Mercato many times and have never been disappointed. The menu is well rounded and the nightly specials add a necessary, finishing touch to the possibilities. There is always variety with the special presentations indeed being something different and enjoyable. The servers are knowledgable about the the dishes, their content and their preparation. The kitchen is able and willing to make the changes necessary for special dietary needs and wishes. Of special notice are the homemade pastas - always al dente - and the seafood which has never been overcooked or had its taste masked by overwhelming sauces. There is a lot to like and remember at Mercato!
