A word from Mercato
Focusing on market-fresh, Italian-inspired food at 1216 Spruce Street inhabits the old Camac Food Market building, a historic space that has long stood vacant on the corner of Camac and Spruce Streets, just East of Broad St.

Mercato infuses slow cooking traditions of Old World Italy with an experimental style and bold take on new Italian American cuisine, placing primary importance on using ingredients that are at their peak that day.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "At Mercato, the seating area is tight and disturbingly loud. I would only recommend going there if you can secure outside seating. However, if you are not a dog lover, beware that they are welcome, and could be sitting right next to you while you are trying to enjoy your meal. Overall, both the food and service were good."

  • "We had a wonderful meal!! All five of us!! Food was delicious and service was great! We sat by the big window near the front of the restaurant and the window was taken out! Wonderful atmosphere impart due to beautiful night."

  • "Food and general ambience of this neighborhood BYON continues to be excellent. However, on a rainy night when the front windows are closed (and streetside dining is not an option) the noise inside is truly unbearable. The relentless din dwarfed the excellent appetizers (grilled artichokes for instance) and superb entrées (skirt steak and pyramid pasta)."

  • "The food was great, (I had the night's special fish) but the room was so noisy that it was distracting. There were four of us, and we had wanted to talk and this was a bad choice for us. We all had a sore throat from trying to talk over the noise when we left. We wished we had sat outside. Maybe we'll come back at an off time."

  • "Great BYOB, but the noise level was high and so it is difficult to go with a group and hear each other. The ceiling appeared metallic which didn't help acoustics"
    Dined on 7/14/2014
  • "Food was not great. Too salty diver scallop risotto, skirt steak tasted like vinegar, not too mention it was so hot inside"

  • "My wife and I recently visited Mercato on a Friday evening to celebrate our Anniversary. The location is good and the restaurant interior has a comfortable welcoming look and feel. My wife ordered the Marlin special and I had sauteed scallops over gnocchi (the chef accommodated my request to substitute for the risotto). The food was very good to excellent. However, the noise level from other patrons was terrible. The acoustics in the room were extremely poor. The couples on either side of us felt the same. Recommended if you want good food with little to no conversation."

  • "Love the artichokes and muscles. People working there are happy and excellent in service. It can be a bit noise because it's so small but we like the vibrant atmosphere. We sit outside when a table is available. BYOB so your money is spent on excellent and high quality food. It's our favorite place in the city."

  • "Mercato is by far a neighborhood gem that has grown into a center city favorite. The restaurant really cannot be beat, when you look at the food, value, ambiance and service. There are many italian byob's in the city, but few can carry the quality of food and charm of this place. Try the tasting menu. It really is a great deal at $48/person. You literally get to try anything on the menu. Service is great too. Attentive without being pushy or overbearing. Our party never felt rushed. Which was refreshing, especially for a small BYOB like this."

  • "$48 for excellent 4 course prix fixe with many choices for each course...can't be beat, as the quality is consistently excellent..and the menu full of choices. Could use better wineglasses...as this place warrants a good bottle and is BYOB, a real plus. Each course was satisfying to all at our table (4 of us). Good ingredients, thoughtful recipes...and attractive presentation with large portions..none of the tapas-style tiny portion that create frustration as much as anything."

  • "After several trips to Mercato, out most recent (this past Saturday) was the least impressive. The bruschetta was almost bland. It was OK, but certainly nothing to write home about. My scallops were the star of the evening. They were well seasoned and perfectly cooked. My wife's chicken cacciatore was mediocre. Again, nothing to write home about. Overall a good meal, but far from spectacular."

  • "Great food, but very crowded and excessively noisy. So loud that we could not have a conversation within our group."
    Dined on 7/3/2014
  • "It had been a long time since my last visit. I was surprised that the menu has not changed materially in years. And I had forgotten about the noise level, which required my friend and I to yell at each other the entire night. The food was excellent, but the noise level detracted significantly from my enjoyment of the experience."

  • "High noise, high charm , great food. Remember to bring cash. Byob is great with wine stores in the hood to get whatever you desire. What a pleasure. Intend to return whenever we're in town."

  • "Food and vibe were fantastic. Creative menu and the byob aspect lets everyone put their own spin on the occasion"

  • "Food is always delicious! BYOB is wonderful, also."

  • "My gf and I came here on a recommendation of a friend - and it was surely the right choice. We did the $48 per person sample of the menu and it was amazing. Definitely worth the cost as they didn't skimp us on the size or portions."

  • "Mercato is consistently very good. Menu is interesting; food presentation and preparation great. Mercato has been around for many years for good reason: it delivers a great experience!"

  • "Great restaurant in what's probably Philly's hottest neighborhood."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "One of the best BYOB experiences I've had - the cioppino was SO delicious! The pyramid pasta was good, I wish the dough had been a little less thick, but altogether it was very tasty. They serve very nice portions as well, definitely money well spent!"

  • "I've been going to Mercato for years and it's always wonderful. The food is amazing, the servers are very friendly and on a nice summer evening, the atmosphere is perfect. I would recommend to anyone looking for a date night spot."

  • "Great menu, the duck ragu over cavatelli was amazing , very wine friendly foods. Cheeses were outstanding, only downside was the noise level, hard to hear conversation at times. Will definitely go back ! Yum"

  • "We made last minute Father's Day reservations and were so happy that we were able to get a table. We ordered the tasting menu and did not regret one single calorie. Highly recommended. This was our second visit and we will definitely be back."

  • "This is my fourth dining experience at Mercato and like usual, it was amazing. Delicious food, took guests from out-of-town and they were raving about it."

  • "Mercato is great in the summer time with all the windows open. Great service and food was delicious."

  • "The food is consistently well prepared. They were VERY busy of Sat night yet the service was attentive and well trained to circumvent problems. We have been there many times, are recognized upon entrance, and feel welcomed even during the most trying situations for the staff. I write this reluctantly because the possibility exists that the "eager to be seen" may now invade the place. None-the-less, and in spite of the noise level in the restaurant, it is a fine place to dine."

  • "Have been going here for years and the food has always been excellent!"
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "The food was incredible here! The service was very attentive and the place was very nice. The only thing I didn't like was that the tables were so close it was hard to not be in multiple conversations at once."

  • "I've been with my boyfriend a million times, but we spontaneously decided to go at 10 for dinner. It was excellent, as usual. Greatest BYO in philly."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "The service was very friendly. Check on us the right amount of times throughout the meal. I had the duck sugo & cavetelli which was delicious. Inside it looked like you could feel a little crowded but I think that's typical of any city neighborhood establishment. I don't mind close quarters because eventually you end up talking to complete strangers and having a good time. The weather was warm and humid but I noticed they kept the inside cool to provide relief. We chose to sit outside despite the humidity. It was perfect for people watching."

  • "Loved the food and loved the service it was amazing I will go back"

  • "I was in Philly for a girls' weekend with a group of friends, and we dined at Mercato on a Saturday night. The fact that it is a BYO restaurant was a huge plus, but the food completely won me over. This was one of the best meals I've ever had... and I love to eat! I will definitely be back again soon with my boyfriend, who loves good food and wine as much as I do."

  • "My girlfriend and I have become monthly regulars at Mercato and have never been let down by their quality service and delicious menu. The artichoke app might be the best thing I have ever eatin, and is by far one of the must haves on their menu. I like to personally order something that I've never ordered before when I go to Mercato and have yet to be disappointed. Mercato's caring and knowledgable staff is what gives this place an overall A+++ in my book. I highly suggest that you give it a try!"

  • "I went to Mercato in a group of four for dinner on a Saturday night. The staff was friendly and professional, and the food tasty. The one of us who ordered Spicy Crab Linguine did not stop raving about it for a good while. I had the Mascarpone Cheesecake and did not regret it. Yum."

  • "This restaurant does not accept credit cards, which was a major detriment."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "My wife and I shared a fresh market salad with mint dressing and two fantastic pasta dishes, followed by a delightful maple walnut mascarpone cheesecake. However, service was ill-timed and sloppy. After we were promptly seated and handed menus, we waited fifteen minutes before being acknowledged by a server, who then took our order but failed to tell us about daily specials, which we heard her recite to the couple seated next to us minutes later. Our salad plates were whisked away abruptly by another server who delivered our pasta without asking if we had finished eating the salad. Dessert was delivered ten minutes after ordering, and the check was incorrectly tabulated."

  • "We stumbled on Mercato several years ago and it has become a "return to" place whenever we visit Philly. The food is awesome and the atmosphere is relaxing. Start with one of the meat and cheese trays along with a flavored olive oil or vinegar. The entrees are great with well balanced flavors. Since the restaurant is BYOB it allows you to bring your best wine at a reasonable price point."
