A word from Mercat a La Planxa
Mercat a La Planxa features an extraordinary selection of tapas dishes from cut-to-order charcuterie and cheeses to fresh seafood, steaks and chops, all inspired by Spain's Catalan region. The impressive menu includes an emphasis on meats and seafood served 'a la planxa' or grilled-to-order. At the bar enjoy a tempting array of seasonally inspired sangrias, Spanish-styled cocktails, an extensive collection of Spanish cavas and our carefully selected wine list featuring 40 Spanish wines available by the bottle or by the glass.

Private dining is available in our upstairs space, La Veranda, overlooking the entire main dining room.

Diner Reviews
  • "I have visited Mercat a La Planxa several times for dates, with friends and for business and have not been disappointed once. People to whom I've introduced Mercat have returned on their own with their friends."

  • "Chef Noah Sandoval has it going on. Every dish of the tasting menu demonstrates real imagination and creativity. I had to take a minute to admire the arrangement of elements I would never have thought would play nicely, but do. I kept thinking of the tastes like great wine -- the experience changes from the moment it hits your tastebuds through the finish. Each flavor is great on its own but melds into a harmonious whole. All of that is a casual, warm setting. I know this sounds over the top, but I actually saw a diner at another table lick his plate. Enough said."

  • "My wife and I had the tasting menu. Great choice. Small, plates with bountiful flavors. We will be back"

  • "This place was recommended to me and now I'm recommending it as well. The tasting menu is worth every penny! Amazing tapas kept coming out of the kitchen.. non-stop deliciousness! Great ambience, service was outstanding! I'm a die hard tapas fan and this place blew my mind..the pan con tomate, squid, tortilla española and the gambas al ajillo were insanely good ! The wine list is to die for..plenty of fabulous tempranillos to choose from! Whenever I'm in Chicago again...will def make this one of my stops!"

  • "My girlfriend was in Chicago over the summer and raved about this place. In fact, her and her mom went 3 nights in a row and didnt have the same things. It did not disappoint as the food was excellent and so was the wine. Will definitely be coming again when we visit Chicago in the near future."

  • "From the moment I walked in I was given individual attention by all, from the Host to the busts person.my waitress was so helpful with my selections in unfamiliar territory. From the delicious cocktail to a taste of desert, and a delightful glass of Sherry, my meal was perfect and delicious. The manager stopped by and was attentive and informative."

  • "My server Jennifer was awesome and suggested some of the items I tried. LOVED the lamb chops, the fried chicken thighs with lobster and fennel Cole slaw and the braised ox tail ravioli. I will definitely return again soon."

  • "Mercat is wonderful. The food was creative, fresh and delicious, the service was terrific and the window view were gorgeous. It's not cheap but, for us, it was a perfect place for a special occasion."

  • "Our food was wonderful. Delicious. Ambiance was super great - very fun place to go with your friends. Everything was great except our waiter was a little off-putting. He kept trying to up-sell us (annoying) and seemed irked when we wanted to hold onto our menu (in case we wanted to order more food). He also kept the bottle of wine so he could pour it at his leisure which just felt uptight and overly controlled. I like to relax and enjoy when I pay $200 for dinner and his affect was just bizzare. Not rude, but definitely did not make our experience more pleasant."

  • "My wife and I did the chefs tasting and it was really good!! Every item that came to the table was delicious!! Would definitely recommend!"

  • "If you are looking for authentic tapas, this gets as close as possible to the real thing. One of the nicest list of Spanish wines in the city of Chicago as well as being affordable. The pork shoulder was amazing as were their various ham and rice plates. Be warned that it can get awfully loud in the dining room when crowded since they do have high ceilings!"

  • "I've been three times now and the first two I was super happy with everything we ordered. The tapas portions are relatively small so I'd only go to this place in a very small groups, if not just as a couple. This last visit we did the tasting menu with wine pairing. Wines were excellent. The chefs food selections were mostly OK. Sea bass was bland. Shrimp was toooo soft. Potato quiche was bland. The pork dish, and a green rice dish were very good. Overall the tasting menu was disappointing, in part also maybe due to overhype from the nice waiter. Also surprised that the last dish wasn't any dessert. Had to order that separately. But the times I've ordered off the menu itself I was really happy."

  • "Had the tasting menu with a group of six for a business-like dinner, truly outstanding. I do many group outings, primarily in NYC, but this place is a standout. Great space, inventive food, attentive service and and incredible cocktails extremely well executed. Each course was amazing and unique from inventive vegetable dishes to perfectly prepared lamb and filet."

  • "Even half empty, the restaurant is very loud. My last visit, I didn't care, as everything was so delicious. This time, everything was good, but at these prices and with so many other restaurants to choose from, that isn't quite enough. The squid ink pasta special was advertised as having more seafood than arrived with the dish. The mushroom flatbread, too, was good, but seemed to be missing some of the ingredients listed on the menu. The wine list is quite pricey. Overall, good- but not good enough for me to rush back."

  • "The food was good but the servers kept starring at you they seem like they didn't want to be there. Our server was arrogant kept going to the bar to talk to co workers. He didn't do a great job waiting on us. The bus boy was wearing shades didn't look professional. I wouldn't go back to this place and specially back on my birthday, I thought it would be better run but I guess it wasn't"

  • "I've eaten tapas at every restaurant in Chicago and have faced mediocre quality and mundane service at each venue. Mercat is the exception that raises Spanish tapas to where it should be and that is at the pinnacle of small plate dining. We have plenty of new trendy restaurants borrow the high quality small plate concept and present it as original but it is Spain that is at the top of the culinary world (even with the loss of El Bulli) so I am glad to finally say that, yes, Chicago has a Spanish restaurant worthy of international note. The tasting menu runs the full gamut of flavors and perfectly paced. Bravo mercat a la planxa until next time."

  • "This was my 2nd time here and I loved it even more coming back. I highly recommend doing the Jose's Mesa -- the chef's choice for the evening with the wine pairing. I told them I had 2 things I wanted in the order and the rest was a surprise. Each course builds toward a slightly more substantive item. Our final item was the lamb chops, grilled to perfection, and tender...it melted in my mouth. Also a high point was the duck dumpling...you won't believe the flavor they pack into that one bite. Go and plan to spend a good hour or two, savoring each course!"

  • "This was my third time eating at Mercat. My memory of the first two meals was: 1) not very impressive; and 2) extremely pricey. I am pleased that I was only half right, its pricey. However, the food, wine and service were excellent. The portions are tiny. Since there were six of us, many dishes required at least two portions. The server did an excellent job, we didn't order too much or two little. The food is creative and delicious. The only thing we didn't love was the seafood paella. For $75, you should get more than two shrimps, two scallops and a max 3 oz. lobster tail (and some mussels). I would definitely go back, but not with six people on my nickel."

  • "The array of menu choices somewhat overwhelming for newbies to this type of cuisine. Server recommended 3 selections per person... too much food for light eaters. The PAELLA NEGRA was outstanding, but unfortunately we had to take home because we were not hungry. Service attentive and relaxed --nice because they did not rush the courses. Definitely recommend dining with a group share dishes, experiment and have fun. The house cocktail and sangria selections are huge. Especially enjoyed the Menta Cidro: Grey Goose Citron, St. Germain, Mint, Fresh Citrus, Soda. Birthday reservation for 7:00 p.m. -- not seated until 7:30. The downstairs cocktail lounge was a comfortable place to have a cocktail and wait."

  • "The FOOD, the drinks, the service was amazing; but be warned you may try everything on the menu!!!"

  • "Mercat was Fun with a capital F for Flair! The high ceilings and huge arching windows gives the restaurant just enough of an elegant feeI. Sangria, both white and red, are available by the pitcher! (Forego the white, however, at least when I was there, lacking in flavor, a Cardinal sin when we are talking Sangria! However people re-ordered more pitchers of the Red!) The food was excellent! We all went with the chef tasting menu since we are a group that loves to try new and / or different things. We were not disappointed! It was so much food so be prepared if you go with this selection, but then again it was pretty pricey, tapas just kept coming! Each tapa was so unique and not like any you've had before, inspired cuisine of Spain no doubt."

  • "Food was outstanding. Flavors I would never put together . Felt like a food critic trying to explain how great everything tasted. Ordered 5 different dishes and couldn't pick a favorite . This was my 4th visit and I have never been disappointed. Often not sure what to order off the menu but whatever it has been it turns out incredible . I will be back and will recommended the experience to anyone."

  • "Went for the first time after hearing good things. Had the less expensive of the 2 tasting meal options. They accommodated my wife's no scallops or pork restrictions while still serving pork to me. Loved the food and the experience. We each had 2 glasses of white wine - 4 different wines so we could try them as they were unfamiliar. Perfect compliment to the food. Highly recommend for tapas lovers!"

  • "We tried the taster plates to share. Our server was very knowledgable and also advised us to try the wine paring which we did. It was fantastic."

  • "I wish I'd dined there before. It's truly one out the great restaurants in Chicago."

  • "at least in my scale. It was an ouststanding experience. The tapas are all exquisitely prepared and are an extraordinary adaptation of classical tapas to modern cuisine. It is expensive but it is well worth it. Everyone of the tapas has unique presentations and taste.I can highly recommend "Ropa vieja" from goat, Colorado Lamb Lolipos and their 3 sauces, Lamb meatbals,Gambas in garlic sauce, using plantains to make a roll. In order to keep you busy the service is excellent to keep you busy and not to wait."

  • "The rib-eye was outstanding. The brussels sprouts were a revelation."

  • "The food had good flavor, and the menu was pretty creative. My issue was as many tapas places I've enjoyed, for the cost we spent for a party of four, we all were hungry afterwards. We had only two drinks on the table and cost was not worth the amount of food received. I have spent just as much at other places for great food and felt like it was worth the cost. If you are looking for a casual place, great service, very flavorful food and looking to try some new things, then this is the place for you."

  • "I chose this restaurant to begin an evening at Symphony Hall. It was perfect in every way. Fairly quiet as we were there before the main dinner crowd, very attentive service. Amazing, interesting, beautifully presented food. Definitely recommend you try La Planxa in Chicago!"

  • "I don't live in Chicago, and this was my first visit to Mercat. Holy smokes... it was incredible! We sprung for the chef's tasting menu with wine pairing and everything was phenomenal. We probably had 12 or 13 courses with three glasses of wine accompanying them - I would highly recommend doing this as it's the most bang for your buck and you get to taste a ton of food."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "The tasting menu for brunch is great! Do it; the menu changes every week but has the same quality of food. Bacon wrapped dates are delicious!"

  • "A year ago we were in Barcelona, along with Madrid and Toledo. Mercat's food equaled or exceeded anything we had there. The ingredients tasted like the genuine Spanish article - no over salted olives as you get here in the US. The ambiance looking out over snow-covered Grant Park while being in a warm, convivial and excellent restaurant was just great. It was our daughter's 18th birthday - which they didn't know in advance. Once told, they put a tiny birthday candle on her chocolate desert and made her feel very special. And - they didn't sing Happy Birthday! We can't say enough for this restaurant."
