A word from Mercado - Los Angeles
Mercado on 3rd St. is the 2nd location for partners Jesse Gomez and Executive Chef Jose Acevedo. The restaurant is an inventive mix of food, atmosphere and tradition, reflecting the heart & soul of new Mexican dining. The restaurant is set up as several different spaces, with the main dining area as a covered patio space that looks out to 3rd street for a beautiful view. The open air bar is a relaxing way to enjoy a cocktail and food. The menu exemplifies the cuisine and flavor of the partners Mexican roots, featuring items such as Chef Acevedo's signature Carnitas, created from a recipe handed down through generations. With tortillas made by hand, the finest meats, poultry and seafood, flavorful sauces, enchiladas and tacos, produce from the local farmers' market, and everything made from the freshest ingredients, Mercado offers handcrafted cuisine, artful design, warm atmosphere and service that is both friendly and informed to guide each guest through the dining experience.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Love the contemporary look of the restaurant - they offer a large Sunday brunch menu - try the corn side - it complements all of the dishes."

  • "We randomly came to the new Mercado after shopping at The Grove. Lucky for us we made it just in time for happy. Everything was great and our server David was the best. My husband absolutely loved the scallops so I definitely see us making another visit in the near future. IF you are looking for a place that has great food and drinks than this is it. If you can stop during happy hour and try a number of different items. Beside the scallops I recommend the carnitas tacos. Both locations are great for a good time and yummy Mexican food."

  • "Except for the noise level, it was excellent. Your system did not allow me to give it the max on noise."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed my happy hour dinner there (lots of small plates). Great friendly competent service, nice atmosphere with the open fronted room."

  • "Not proportionate in value. The Tres Leches cake is wonderfully delicious. A contained bar scene with no managerial order. A dark atmosphere with a lot of energy moving about. Not a place for kids , seniors, or anyone wanting a private place to talk. Disrespectful valet services"

  • "I've eaten at Mercado a half a dozen times and have tried different dishes at each visit- including the specials. It's a great taste sharing opportunity and a gastronomic delight. The flavors are distinct and creative..... and the service is excellent- the waiters are informed, attentive but not hovering. It's one of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood. Just don't expect a quiet intimate dining experience - the mood is festive, it's almost always packed, so conversation can be challenging."

  • "Delicious small plates and drinks at Mercado. Wonderful decor and service make the experience even better."

  • "The first hostess wasn't too friendly. She tried to give us a "bad" table. even though they had so many tables open. After complaining the guy in charge gave us a good table...only after complaining. Otherwise we would've had a table next to the kitchen noise and the toilets."

  • "Every food and drink item was very well done, including fresh margaritas and the cactus plate. One side of restaurant (with bar) is incredibly loud."

  • "We tried Mercado for the first time -- we'll be back. Everything about the place was fantastic -- food, room, service. The prices are good for the quality -- not cheap, but not bad. So glad we found a new upscale Mexican close to home."

  • "I enjoyed all dishes - we over ordered but it was worth trying everything, Carnitas - Great, tender and tasty. Tamales - flavorful and dos-tacos off the chart. The gaucamole was unique and just perfect. Yum"

  • "The food was excellent, service top notch and the ambience was vibrant. Love that is restaurant is in my neighborhood, can't wait to go back...again and again and again."

  • "We ordered many small plates so we could sample a lot. Everything was delicious especially the carnitas and tamales. I do have a problem with spicy foods so this isn't the best place for me personally but even with that said, it was so good that I will probably go back. The service was excellent also. We highly recommend Mercado for people who have no health issues with spicy food. "

  • "this was my 3rd time to the restaurant. the first 2 times were amazing, great food (the best flan in the world), great drinks (but small), great service, great ambiance. this 3rd time, the food was still great, but the service was the terrible. i think we had poor luck of the server that was assigned to us (brandon). i will go again, but will make sure i am not in his section. "

  • "Yum. The food here is so flavorful and there are enough vegetarian choices that you don't have to start ordering off the menu or ask for any items to be removed from a dish to make it suitable if you're a veg. I've had two great meals here with girlfriends, but both times when the bill has come it does seem remarkably high considering we each have had one (delicious!) drink and shared a few dishes. "

  • "Prior restaurants in the same space have not been able to survive so I hope Mercado stays for good. It's a great modern take on traditional Mexican food (I'm Mexican). The Mole de Pavo (turkey mole) was fall off the bone delicious with a sauce that was both savory and sweet. The rice was perfect. I took my mom for brunch on Mothers Day and they accommodated us very well. Cocktails were fresh and delicious. We had margaritas; traditional, grapefruit, watermelon and bloody Mary's. I will caution you, the chilaquiles were very spicy and I probably won't get them again only for that reason but aside from that everything I've had is delicious. The choriqueso and guacamole I highly reccomend."

  • "This place is awesome for groups who want to enjoy savory Mexican food. The noise level is pretty high but it makes for a great time. The bar was limited but they did have a vast selection of tequila. Would recommend trying the scallops!"

  • "We love Mexican food and our friends had dined for dinner a couple of nights prior and raved, so I made a rez for Sunday brunch. Limited menu, lots of dishes with meat and no substitutions. In a city where vegetarians are plenty, they wouldn't change the cheese with meat on the nachos appetizer to a simple shredded mozzarella (which they had because my daughter had an open face quesadilla which is not on the menu - undercooked). Server was really sweet and apologetic. They brought the wrong dish for me, coffee was so week I sent it back. Guac was good but for $10 and a family of 4 they gave about 20 chips with it. Michelada was the best item of our meal. Next time - Red or even Pink Taco! Maybe the dinner menu is better than brunch?"

  • "....once again, mercado continues to amaze, taking mexican cuisine to new heights.....the pablano and corn appetizer is addicting....the camerones devine....the chicken tinga tacos are off the hook.....been here nearly a dozen times....each time better than before...."

  • "Honestly the place was packed but I had a reservation, they ended up seating us at a communal table, which is fine but not ideal. The bar was so busy are tacos came out and we finished eating them before any of our margaritas came out. Good food good crowd, great restaurant design! "

  • "Extremely noisy even in the smaller room. Food and service make up for it, but don't go there to talk."
    Dined on 5/3/2014
  • "There are many reasons why service can be bad. Perhaps there was a reason when we dined at Mercado on Saturday, but I cannot imagine what the reason would be for the service to be that bad. If it was possible to rate service with negative stars, I would. The sad part is the poor service is more what I will remember about Mercado than the amazing food. The food is absolutely amazing...it would just be nice if you would get it in a timely manner. One of our dishes was not brought out until after we paid the check!"

  • "We had a great meal during a recent visit from Chicago. Fish tacos were fresh and tasty. Carnitas was fall apart delicious. Thanks to s recommendation from a FB friend, we checked it out. Will return if back in town."

  • "Awesome food, really fun, good drinks and literally the only restaurant I've ever seen work in this space. With this food and this tequila list, you can see why."

  • "The ambiance is great, the entire front wall opens so there is a natural breeze and light from outside while the high wall keeps it protected from 3rd street. We got all small plates and shared, they were all delicious. The margarita and the michelada were both very good. Our server was very friendly but got a little distracted by a large party at times. Overall I would recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area. "

  • ". . . The service was not attentive. We waited for a long time for our server to come back to us once we were done with dinner and to get us the check. Otherwise, a great experience! We will be back. "

  • "My recent visit to Mercado was a fantastic dining experience. The food continues to be simply amazing- flavorful, creative, and consistently good. The drinks are impeccable...can't stop raving about the blood orange and jalapeño margaritas! The service is always friendly and attentive. The chilaquiles and tortas are a must for brunch. For dinner -try the street style corn, carnitas, rib eye, and chicken tinga tacos. For small plates -try the guacamole, choriqueso dip, carnitas nachos, and the fried squash blossoms. What ever you do -don't leave w/o tasting the tres leches cake and the flan! While I'm typically not a fan of tres leches cake, Mercado's version is out-of-this-world. And the flan is perfection..so unbelievably creamy. So good!!"

  • "Mercado is the best! Food and service is excellent. The menu had so many delicious selections! Definitely try the Alambres de Arrachera tacos and the Tostaditas de Ceviche Tropical. The flan is an excellent choice for dessert. Will go back and try more dishes."

  • "Normally the menu at Mercado is a little on the pricey side for dinner; however my boyfriend and I went to Mercado for their happy hour and it was amazing! It wasn't very expensive and the drinks we got were awesome. Its an open air restaurant so it felt perfect in side and it wasn't too crowded which was nice! The staff was super attentive and extremely nice and the food was awesome !! Our favorite item was the steak tacos and their queso was really good too !"

  • "I've been to all of Jesse's restaurants, Mercado Santa Monica, Yxta Downtown, and El Arco Iris in Eagle Rock and of course Mercado LA. I love them all. Jesse definitely knows how to make a restaurant work and is cornering the market on Gourmet Mexican Cuisine. Great Job!"

  • "As always, Jesse and Jose, did a great job here! So tasty tostaditas de ceviche (may have been called something else), carnitas tacos and a poblano chile appetizer (super sauce). Of course we had great margaritas, too. Disappointed we couldn't have our fave, shrimp taquitos, though."

  • "Mercado was overall a great place. The food was really good. We had the quacamole, tamales, and skirt steak tacos. My only complaint was that the skirt tacos were very small with a hefty price tag for two. Everything was otherwise great. I am kind of over the small plate thing. You can spend a lot of money and walk away not full. I would definitely go back. The service was great and the overall ambiance was very nice."
