Mercaditosooo good!Met some friends in Chicago for a weekend, and we had an early dinner at Mercadito before a show. What a great meal! The guacamole was the best we've ever had, and the taco selection made it a lot of fun to share and each type was delicious. Only reason I have a 4* for overall was because upon arrival the hostesses felt the need to scold us for being late, stating what time we had to part our table. This is after I called to inform them we got lost and were running late and had already been told. When the waiter offered dessert we told them we were told we had to vacate our table by a specific time and probably didn't have time, he assured us it was fine to order dessert. It wasn't a problem and they fit us right in.
We did a guacamole trio, two salsas our server recommended, and the queso fundido. We tried four different types of tacos and everyone in the group had a different favorite. We had a hard time choosing though - everything on the menu sounded good. Everything we tried was delicious.
The tequila menu here is excellent, there were some good beers available, and we especially loved the fresh fruit juices.
Overall, it was an excellent and tasty meal experience. I wanted to take my boyfriend out to dinner for his birthday, but didn't want to do a stuffy, boring restaurant like certain date-night destinations turn out to be. We had the best tacos I've ever tasted (hongos). I really appreciated how vegetarian friendly the restaurant was. As a vegetarian dating a carnivore, I'm often frustrated by restaurants that have only one token vegetarian entree, if any. Seeing a menu this accommodating so that neither one of us had to compromise was just awesome. Every course got a 'wow' reaction, including our drinks. Food is unique and flavorful, and service is attentive and knowledgeable. Drinks are special and tasty. The only problem, the tables are super close to each other. Luckily it wasn't totally crowded, but we were seated next to a couple that was just getting their bill. It was hard to have a normal conversation with my lady because they were basically sitting at our table. It seems like they stagger seating in order to facilitate spacing, but if it's crowded...
