Diner Reviews
  • "LOVE this restaurant! My second time back and it was just as good as the first. Excellent food: guac & chips, estilo baja tacos, pastor tacos, & arroz verde. Food came out very quickly after ordering and the servers were attentive. The only negatives were the tight seating (they had to pull the table out to let you sit) and it was pretty noisy. Both are likely due to the high number of diners... but that's to be expected for a place this good. Highly recommended and I would certainly come back."

  • "Service was lacking at first - we were running behind but then still had to wait for our table, and it was maybe 20 minutes before a server greeted us (after complaining to the hostess). Since it was warmer out, the patio was open and it seemed like they were understaffed. We also had a server in training, and the section was being manned by two servers which made things a bit confusing. Food was amazing - definitely recommend the guac and salsa trios. Tacos come 4 to a serving - very small but very tasty. The Cobia tacos were fabulous! Atmosphere was lively and loud - there were quite a few huge parties around us. Service ended up being great - our server didn't rush us, and the main guy took care of us with a free round of shots."

  • "I have a gluten intolerance and they are very accommodating. They have great drinks and I have to admit I have only had tacos the few times I have been there, but they are so good I just keep getting different options. Very creative in their food and drink. I have gone for large group dinners down to just three of us. Each time they were great!"

  • "Bit crowded at tables by bar and definitely noisy but amazing food and drink so worth it."

  • "The staff was helpful and friendly, the food (all of it, we ordered a lot) was delicious. Like seriously every morsel. Even the drinks were yummy. This is likely to become one of my new celebratory spots. One thing, if you're looking for quiet this is not your place, or go really early. The noise level is a bit high and the tables are pretty close together so you're kind of yelling over the person sitting next to you who's yelling over you."

  • "everything about this place is fun and energetic. the food is great - but we got stuck at a table fit for the lollypop guild. i'm 6'0, and the table was about as high as my knees. very uncomfortable in that aspect, but it is what it is. there were only 2 in our party, and pretty much not even enough room on the table for food and drinks."

  • "Took my mother, who was in Chicago for the weekend, and a group of friends here for a fun Friday night dinner. We had a reservation for 8:15pm and got seated right away. The only negative I had was that the restaurant was extremely busy and loud. We all ordered margarita's, and they were all delicious. For food we ordered the guacamole flight to start, and tacos for the main course. The tacos come in a set of four, but since our group was five the waiter told us he would bring five of each kind instead of four, which was very accommodating. The tacos were delicious by the way, especially the mahi mahi ones. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and great with suggestions. Overall, we all had a great time and would definitely come back."

  • "My sister and I absolutely love this place for the fun atmosphere and the margaritas. The tacos are very delicious, but the guacamole is where it's at! I took my boyfriend there this week and he loved the fish tacos."

  • "Everything taster fantastic. Initially they tried to seat us in awkward lounge area with no real table but we opted to wait the extra time for a real one. Food was consistently very good. The noise level was very very loud from the time we walked in to departure. This would be the reason we won't return. Service was courteous but slow and plates were not cleared in a timely manner whatsoever"

  • "The ambiance inside is great as long as you dont mind sitting elbow to elbow with a stranger. Theres a cheese fondue appetizer that is delish. The margaritas were tasty and STRONG!"

  • "We were there on Saturday night and had a great time, food and service was fantastic. We enjoyed it so much we decided to go back on Sunday afternoon with a larger crowd so we could experince more of the great food. Unfortunately the service was terrible. We were a table of 8 and found ourselves constantly waiting for the next course. Our waiter basically disappeard, very disappointing."

  • "Great food. Great service. Had an early reservation at 5:45 pm as we had tickets to a show. It was pretty empty when we were seated but very quickly it filled up. The noise level was so loud by 6:15 we couldn't hear each other at our table. Literally had to shout. Struggled to understand the waitress and other wait staff when they came to the table. Ruined the whole experience. I'd love to go back but would only consider going during off hours...maybe a late lunch or super early dinner."

  • "This is a great place to try some different spins on Mexican food. The tacos are amazing. It's a lively place with a great menu and vibrant ambiance."

  • "The tacos as usual were very good!! Ate the smoked fish, cobo chicken and carnita tacs, as well as the traditional guacamole. Stuffed ourselves because the food is so good!!! My only complaint, is that the tables are way to close together!!!! I also feel they try to turn tables over and sometimes feel rushed."

  • "The food is excellent as well as the service but the dining experience can be beyond annoying due to the seating/noise. We were seated next to the front door area which is one of two (the other adjacent to the bar) unfavorable spots. The restaurant is so cramped that people waiting in line actually stand directly next to your table while you eat your dinner. Had to ask staff to tell people to move twice to no avail. If you get seated by the bar you will experience the same thing.People standing next to your table while you eat. Unacceptable. Go before 7 or after 10 or risk an unpleasent experience."

  • "We walked in with three older children and the manager gave me the impression that my children were not welcome. Good thing the server thought differently, she was great (Christy). Very attentive to our needs and provided an awesome experience. The food, how can I put this, delicious! It was fresh, hot, and tasty. Great place to visit and to make a repeat, this was our fourth time here."

  • "Called me 20 minutes before my reservation to say they were closed for lunch that day. No explanation, no attempt to regain my business. Very poor form."

  • "I love this place and the trios of ceviche and guacamole you can order. The noise level is too loud though. At dinner it was hard to hear people across the table. And it was a Tues."

  • "Mercadito was fabulous! We started with the guacamole and pomegranate, which was an interesting, but delicious combination. We then had the chicken tacos...the sauce they put on them was to die for. The shrimp enchiladas were also good. I don't drink margaritas, but someone had told us we HAD to try the mango margarita. So glad we did! Fantastic drink. The only downfall is the restaurant is SO loud. So if you have a big group of people, expect to do some yelling across the table."

  • "I never experience Mexican cuisine tapas, yet this restaurant raise the bar and perceptions. Amazing food taste, awesome cocktails, and fun concept for Mexican food."

  • "Beware of the parking....you are most definitely better off paying $12 for valet then getting towed the sings on the street are not clear."

  • "Absolutely the best tacos & margaritas I've ever had! Suggested to keep your reservation as this place is crawling with lots of hungry foodies. If you're looking for a quiet atmosphere you've come to the wrong place."

  • "Mercadito provides great food and service in a happening atmosphere. Not only do choices abound, but they deliver. Mercadito offers some of the best guacamole and tacos that I've ever had - and part of the fun is in all of the choices they provide. The energetic atmosphere can be exciting, but it's difficult to engage in conversation even in close proximity (it's very loud)."

  • "I used to think the food was the best part of this dinning experience. I think they have started to lose the quality of the meals. Ambiance is still strong and it seems to continue to be a favorite for the in crowd."

  • "Hostess was rude. Service was poor . It was way too cold not worth the effort or money plenty of other Restraunts in the neighborhood with Better food and service"

  • "Excellent food and the tapas style menu gives you a chance to try different things. Our party of two being vegetarians, we were able to order pretty much most items as vegetarian entrees. The Hongos and the veggie version of the Carne (Yeah!!) tacos were delightful and tasty. Toreado and Granada guacamole is delicious with a spicy kick. Torrejas de bolillo desert was just outstanding. Drinks are very pricey; I would just stick with some standard glass of wine or a beer. But it is a very noisy (energetic??) place to take a date since it is almost impossible to have a conversation over the noise level. The tables are placed way too close with your neighbor's face just 6 inches away from your table!! A party of two is sure to be drowned out."

  • "The first three bottled beers I attempted to order with dinner were all sold out. I thought I was on a reality/hidden camera show as the waiter kept returning without my drink. I do not understand how keeping bottles of beer in stock can be so challenging. I actually felt sorry for the waiter. The kitchen seemed to run more smoothly. The guacamole variety is great. We ordered the trio sampler and each had a unique flavor and even varying textures. We also tried a few taco plates. The lobster was overcooked, but the flavors and spices were spot on. We ordered beer battered Mahi tacos which were our favoirte....crunchy, fresh and filling. The bar problem left a bad taste in my mouth, not something I expect on a Tuesday night."

  • "Delicious tacos, great cocktails, but the wait can be a little long. Very fun atmosphere. The downstairs even turns into a dancing spot on the weekends. Worth a fun night with 2-3 pals."

  • "It's a fun little hot spot with a great atmosphere. The drinks are fantastic and the service was awesome. The food was pretty good, beautifully prepared and presented. If you are going there to look because you are looking for fantastic food, maybe this isn't your place. But if you want a fun night out with your significant other or a group of friends, then this is your place."

  • "Some of the best tacos I've ever had. Little pricey but worth it. The place is a little cramped because they have as many tables packed in as they can. It was very loud when we were there but this might just be from the crowd that was there that night."

  • "First timer for dinner. Brunch is always a delight, but first timers for dinner. Service was fantastic. As always, I always over-stuff myself during the three-course offerings -- but that's what Restaurant Week in Chicago is all about, right?"

  • "Felt rushed as they want to turn tables so take your time ordering. Everything was great except Mahi-mahi was a little fishy which is weird unless it's just not fresh"

  • "Dinner for two $145.00. wonderful food, great drinks, but be prepared. we had 2 drinks each, none of which were very generous. my $12 margarita, while unique and quite tasty, was about a 3 sip drink and the rest ice. I'm not sure what size shot glass they measured the ingredients with but maybe it came from Lilliput. I had a glass of chardonnay for a second drink and that was unimpressive for the tag also. We had an appetizer and 3 different taco trays all of which were excellent. In retrospect, while the food was good, if i wanted to spend this much on dinner, I would have chosen a different venue."

  • "I would recommend to a friend, but preface it that this restaurant really crams people in. For a party of 4, they sat as at a table for 2 and I had the joy of sittin g at the corner of the table. Very uncomfortable. Food was good. Perhaps I will be back...but really consider giving people room to sit comfortably!!"
