  • "The food was really good and interesting - presented well and flavorful. The restaurant itself is awkward to get to - there was no one downstairs on the entry level to greet diners and the staff behind the store counter didn't even take notice of guests wandering around and not finding where to go. Once on the second level the bar was so crowded it was nearly impossible to get to the restaurant level without disrupting and interrupting lots of cocktail-goers. Once in the restaurant area, the restaurant was casual an intriguing. The staff seems green, not sure of their menu, and barely able to speak to the menu."

  • "We used the Gilt lunch deal and were disappointed. Our menu was set with zero selection, which was unknown to us at the time of purchase. We were served a green gazpacho, which was fantastic, and a salad and croque monsieur which were pretty average. My take-away impression is that the place thinks too highly of itself to actually give you a choice with any kind of deal. MBK, don't offer the deals then. For a place so pretentious, the service was mediocre. The waitress initially served us sparkling water without saying anything. This was fine with me, but not with my companion. It was less fine when she mixed regular water into it. We also ate bread without any plates. Sloppy service at a high end place means I probably won't be back."

  • "The fame to claim of this restaurant is the Mussels & French fries. Always goood! Unfortunately there were not enough mussels left for our 7pm table of two. So one of us had the Bouillabaisse, which was good, well balanced, not too salty or greasy. Just the right way. The beer (belgian made in Canada) and wine (French) were excellent! The only weakness was the dessert. Advertised as a Tiramisu, was just a short uninteresting version of it."

  • "This place has real ambiance! You'll swear that you're in a friend's DC rowhouse. The tables in the bistro at the top level are extremely close together. We started off our brunch with a couple of Bloody Mary's. Blech. Tasted like tomato juice and vodka, that's all. No spices at all. Tried the sangria. Not good. Then we tried the mimosas, which were excellent! Just enough oj to give it color, without making it too sweet (or diluted!). I suggest going straight to mimosas! For our main course we chose the Corned beef hash with poached egg, and steak and eggs. Both were very under-seasoned. The meat was fork-tender, tho. The egg yolk was not runny like a correct poached egg, but rather sticky. Overall, a nice experience, but very pricey!"

  • "The biggest hit was perfectly prepared steak au poivre. The vegetable plate contained mostly peas (snap & shelled) with good truffle flavor. Boston lettuce salad w/walnuts, blue cheese, and watermelon radish was also good, just not $14 good. The seafood vol au vent contained mostly mussels and had a disk of puff pastry balanced on the top--good flavor, but odd deconstruction. The tiramisu was also oddly deconstructed, although tasty. The entree mussels were large and plump, but the broth wasn't savory enough to give them much flavor. Frites were small (2-3") and soggy. Beignet dessert got raves. Wine and beer selection good; Negroni Afrique also interesting, but mainly for cinnamon lovers. Service was pleasant & professional."

  • "My group started with the smoked lamb and lentil appetizers. For entrees, I tried the porgy, my friend had the fennel gratin, and my fiance had the cod. The appetizers were much more interesting than the entrees themselves. The entrees tasted fine and they were presented well, but they tasted like something I could make at home with minimal effort. I was disappointed considering the prices they were charging. I would not go back. "

  • "I came to Menu MBK for Brunch and would absolutely recommend it to anyone interested in a great new foodie place that is still a secret among DC Brunchers. MBK recently opened up and they do everything right. Chef Keith is an extremely talented artist and prepared exquisite pastries, homemade yogurt parfaits, deviled eggs, crepes, and lochs for the started buffet. The meal only got better with the second course options (The Steak and Eggs is rotating, but a must if offered when you are there). You finish off the experience with a dessert choice, which would wisely be concluded with the cheesescake. Please go here."

  • "Maybe the word isn't out yet about Menu/MBK, because nobody else was there for lunch when we went. Our server was new to lunch, and kept forgetting what dishes were on the lunch menu. The prices were sky-high as well. $14 for small apps, and either $20 or $30+ for lunch mains. I got the $20 meatballs: 3 veal meatballs with some tasty relish, along with veggies. Seems a bit steep. For apps/sides, we got the calamari, which our server assured us was "the best calamari in town" -- I didn't have it, but my lunchmates said it was nothing that merited the hyperbole. Then, we ordered the smoked goat appetizer, which our server assured us would leave us with "a hint of smoke on our palate." None to be found. If this keeps up, could flop like Azur."

  • "We went for brunch - it was a fixed price with 3 courses for $35 (no drinks included). The menu only had 5 options for the main course, the first course just said chef's choice and the 3rd was "dessert" so really you have no idea what you are getting. They should at least post this online that it's only fixed price....they are not going to make it if they keep with this ambiguous and limited of a menu. It was also very hot upstairs! "

  • "When we arrived, the air conditioning wasn't working. It eventually kicked in, but the bathroom never received any air. The service was slow- I think our server had too many tables. I ordered a drink on the cocktail menu that the bartender didn't have the ingredients for, my friend ordered a beer on the bottled list that they didn't have, and I ordered the soft-shell crab which they didn't have. It would have lessened the blow had our server told us what was not available before we looked at the menu. I didn't like the drink I did get, and luckily the server took it off the bill (although he forgot and put it on the bill, then realized it). Our starters were all fair, and our entrees were better. I thought it was overpriced."

  • "Waited to be seated (30 min even though I had an 11:30 reservation) and were seated at a cramped table next to another group of three. Weird "chef's table" for first course. You had to walk down two levels to get there and the selection was too much for a first course. Plus nothing was chilled even though there were dairy products (deviled eggs, cheese, cream). I saw a hair in the fruit salad, so I passed on that. The bed of greens under the deviled eggs was wilted. Offered water by server but had to wait 30 min for coffee. Ordered second course and waited 45 min. When it arrived egg Benedict dish was cold. At that point we had been there 2.5 hours and we just wanted out. Check was comped but who cares? I'll never get that time back!"

  • "Took a group of 5 to Menu/MBK for a birthday dinner. Food was FABULOUS! Terrific variety, lots of options for vegetarians, the kitchen was also willing to accommodate us in making one of the sides into an entree (on a Saturday night!). Very well priced. Staff were all poised, polite, informative, pleasant, and responsive but not intrusive. Highly recommend Menu/MBK! The market on the first floor also had wonderful take out and add ons in case you want to continue your feasting the next day or need to have ready dinner instead of cooking one night. Definitely a gem. "

  • "We'd made rsv for Sat night. We arrived & were surprised to learn our table was not ready. We checked out market area on street level for 15 mins. Our table still wasn't ready so we went to 2nd floor there's a lounge & small bar. It was very busy with biz group pretty much taken over the bar and most of the lounge. But were able to find seats. We had wonderful cocktails (mgr graciously comped). Table was ready 30-40 mins past rsv. We were fine about the delay just hungry. Server was great (forgot her name, from SF). She was very knowledgeable & friendly. Food was excellent. Our only complaints: very small wine pours; rabbit sausage entree should have more pasta and better rsv organization. In time, Menu will be 100% outstanding. "

  • "I recommend eating here. The food was delicious, creative, and thoughtful. Now, with that out of the way, I'll explain the title. The first floor is a high-end market, the second floor a shmoozy bar, and the third floor a quiet, romantic restaurant. Cool concept, but the decorating seems to be confused on how to transition between the different floors. Whole foods on the bottom? Hipster meets lobbyist in the middle? Boring business restaurant at the top? And to top it all off, the music the night I was there I can only describe as 2005 love power ballad. As most of the people going to this restaurant have more taste than Jon Meyer, I recommend a different musical vibe."

  • "With no apparent host in sight, it was a little confusing as to how to check in for our 8pm reservation. Wait staff were young and personable and attentive. We ordered a number of apps to share, the charcuterie being the best of the lot. The lamb I ordered had good flavor but was impossible to cut. The struggle was more than I wanted to contend with so more than half of it remained on my plate. The waffle and ice cream dessert was delicious but the other dessert we ordered was a strange combination of granita and ice cream with a piece of brittle. If I return, it may be only for a nightcap at the cool bar."

  • "This was my 2nd trip to this restaurant in 5 weeks. sadly I won't be going back. I thought I would give it a second shot but I wanted my time and was embarrassed in front of my gusts who I had assured this place was great. The trip was ok - kinks needed to worked out, for starters the chicken was raw - but the MBK made up for it by coming the entree and a bottle of wine. The service was awful, we had to wave down our waiter every time we needed something. We waited 20 minutes for menus and had to grab someone to get those and ask for water. Our wine took 25 minutes - 45 minutes before we had anything at all. The food was fine but 2 of the 3 entrees we ordered weren't available. No one was managing anything. Don't go to MBK. "

  • "We dined in the bistro and were very pleasantly surprised with the experience. The space is cozy and funky, the waitstaff attentive if a bit pushy, and the food is excellent. We shared the trout and potatoes, the beef tartare (outstanding, with a welcome hint of lemon and delicious, delicate, and crispy parsnip shoestring fries), and the lamb sausage, and finished with the sundae (the buttered popcorn flavor was especially noteworthy). I would definitely recommend the restaurant, and would like to return to try the tasting menu."

  • "Went after reading the Post review. Restaurant is aesthetically pleasing and the staff is fabulous. Went before the Wizards game, and were on a tight schedule - they made sure we were out on time and gave suggestions to aid in ordering. We looked at the menu in the car on the way down, only to find that some of the things we had chosen were no longer there. Calamari was good, but heavy on the fried - would have liked more grilled and less fried. Lamb sausage was great. Ordered the cod rolls on the recommendation of the waiter. Flavor was delicious, but there were too many potatoes. In the end a much heavier dish than I expected. Didn't realized that the gnocchi dish came with fish from the description on the menu, but very good."

  • "While the menu looked really interesting most of the flavor was just lacking. The waiter recommended the calamari over the goats milk hash. It may have been the worst fried calamari I've ever had. It was very lately breaded, heavy on the oil and bland. I then ordered the buttered lobster and forbidden rice. The rice was pretty good but the lobster was overlooked and therefore chewy. My friend has the poussin (hen) which she said was pretty decent. We loved the design of this place and we're really looking forward to it. The food was almost less than mediocre so I wouldn't come again for more than wine and apps."
