A word from Memphis Cafe
Memphis Cafe is a Costa Mesa neighborhood mainstay in the heart of the SOBECA district. Soon after opening in 1995, Memphis Cafe received a "5 star" review from LA Times food critic, Irene Virbilla, and has continued to earn critical acclaim and a loyal following ever since. Classically trained chef and co-founder Diego Velasco has created a distinctive gourmet interpretation of Southern home-style cooking with signature dishes such as the smoky gumbo and pulled pork, ethereal buttermilk fried chicken, savory seafood jambalaya and seasonal specials sourced locally with naturally raised meats and poultry. The roadhouse style bar at Memphis offers both classic call and crafted cocktails as well a carefully curated beer and wine list. Open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner with late-night entertainment Thursdays through Saturdays. Complimentary valet parking is available Thursday through Saturday nights.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "My husband and I dined for lunch on a Saturday. We wanted somewhere casual and affordable but unique. We enjoyed our meal and drinks! It's small and cozy so definitely not for a romantic meal but suited our needs perfectly."

  • "Just call it home cooking with Louisiana flair. They feature a rock solid menu of great good food in a casual and funky atmosphere. The meatloaf is piled on fresh vegies with mashed potatoes with gravy and all is cooked to perfection with just a hint of heat in the after taste. Mouthwatering and beer worthy."

  • "I have lived in the neighborhood forever and always thought The Memphis was a dive bar. Was I wrong! Excellent food. I will definitely go back. There was a lot on the menu that i would love to try. What a find!"

  • "My family and I love going to Memphis. It has become the Friday go-to place,"

  • "I always love Memphis but I made a reservation for lunch for my group of 9 and we still had to wait 15 minutes for a table to open up. Defeated the whole purpose of making a reservation and we were trying to get in and out faster since we were on our lunch break on a Wednesday afternoon. They offered for us to sit at two different tables so that we could get seated faster and they seemed irritated when I declined. Service was mediocre but the food is always good."

  • "The food and the service was top drawer. The restaurant is small, but I liked that. A big plus for me was that it is located next to the lab - a fun spot to shop for very hip unusual items."

  • "This place has been around a long time and really looks it. The food is good and the prices low but it's too noisy and tables are crowded together. It's a place for a young and tolerant group, but not a place to "dine.""

  • "I loved going in and finding fried okra, BBQ, and other Southern favourites peering out from the menu at me. My friends did too! O had their bison burger, protein style, and it was just right, served with sweet potato fries (a little overdone for my taste). We would definitely return and give it another try."

  • "Our first time. Food was very good as was service. We arrived at 10:00 am on Sunday for brunch. Place filled up about halfway through our dining time - yes, it got very loud in there as I had read about in online reviews before our visit. We will go again on a Sunday - no later than 10:00 am because of the noise level I now will probably expect."

  • "Memphis has become my family's favorite dining place!"

  • "Went to brunch on Sunday. There was a large party on the patio that thought they owned the entire area. They were not respectful of others around them. The service was slow since they were busy and the bar took a long time to get drinks out. Everything was fine if it wasn't so loud. If the patio is full when you get there and you think it might be too loud, it is....ask to sit somewhere inside."

  • "We had a small party of 6 celebrating a birthday before heading to the Segerstrom Performing Arts Center. Everything went smooth throughout the whole meal, from reservations to drinks to appetizers to entrees and even desert. The server was attentive without being annoying and the prices were reasonable. It's a small place that the locals know well. Funky decor and a casual spirit."

  • "Always a great dining experience at Memphis. The food never disappoints! The service is always excellent as well."

  • "They had a DJ at brunch, enough said. Food drinks n service were all very good. Not a quite place but if you are looking for a bit of energy, great spot"

  • "Been coming here for years. Never let down. Food is excellent."

  • "We ordered the duck quesadilla, green chile grits, fried chicken, and salmon tacos (the special that night) and all were very good! We took our dad there (from out of town) and our waitress was very kind and helpful with what to order for dinner and drinks. I would highly recommend this to a friend. I would suggest making a reservation since its not the largest restaurant. I also liked the valet option since I had tried to come during the week and couldn't find parking. The only downside were the drink specials for that night..our waitress made several suggestions that were much better so ask for recommendations before ordering!"

  • "Meat loaf was awesome! Great, inventive menu overall"

  • "Good, reliable Southern-influenced cooking. Nice place for Po' Boys and pulled-pork sandwiches. I like it for lunch, though parking is the one significant negative - it's very, very limited. Service is friendly and fast. Not too pricey either."

  • "Memphis serves modern takes on traditional American food in a small, funky and charming space. All the classics are here, NY strip steak, lamb chop, mac and cheese, etc. The food is very good and the ambiance is fun. I had a great experience."
    Dined on 12/31/2013
  • "The food was very good. We had the caesar salad and the gumbo soup. For dinner we had the pork chops and the meatloaf. The only problem was a very loud group next to us. We could hardly hear ourselves talk due to their very loud talking. We will return."
    Dined on 12/28/2013
  • "The food is the reason to go here!! If you like bbq, then this is the spot! We sat outside mainly because it smelled a little mildewy inside, probably because the building is old. But the open kitchen atmosphere was great!"

  • "We've eaten here about 3 times, and everytime it's been amazing. The food is great, the service is great, and the ambience is great too. Although it is quite small, it's super cosy!"

  • "Even though it was a rainy Thursday I had a fabulous lunch with ladies from my office. The food was divine and we truly enjoyed ourselves. Thank you!"

  • "The food was great and flavorful with a sense of home cooking. The menu had a good variety. The environment was welcoming and the staff friendly. The happy hour was a good value. This was our second visit and we plan to return. We are planning a group visit for New Years."

  • "Consistently great food. Collard greens are luscious, as are the ribs, fried chicken, halibut and sides in general. Noisy when it is packed... but worth it. Service is great."
    Dined on 12/13/2013
  • "A relaxed atmosphere to enjoy good food. Service was good. We dined early so the noise level was fairly low. I can believe, with the shape and size of the place that it would get loud. We opted for patio dinning and were comfortable even on a cold evening. I suggest checking the website for daily deals. We had half price on the bottle of wine Wednesday, which we enjoyed!"

  • "Have been here multiple times. Memphis never disappoints. Brought my older brother here for lunch and he thought it was great as well."
    Dined on 9/5/2013
  • "I've had lunch and dinner here. Both are good. They always have a good draft beer selection and drink specials. The food is southern style and done right. The fried chicken is crispy and not greasy same with the catfish. The staff is nice and helpful."

  • "As locals in Costa Mesa, we love this popular little place... but there are pros and cons of Memphis. Pros - constantly good food and service... and great Happy Hour menu and drinks! Cons, parking, although they now have valet, so that helps... and being that the place is on the smaller side - the noise levels is hard to carry a nice conversation with other couples at the table. But that won't stop us from eating here!"

  • "The food is good here; not necessarily authentic southern good but it is good. The gumbo is tasty, the catfish is well prepared, & the other menus items are good. This place is really loud so it is tough to have a conversation; not a good place for a business lunch. Parking is awful here; you have to park on the street most of the time. However, the staff is friendly & conscientious. I have food allergies & they are really good at paying attention to my needs. I've always appreciated their attention to detail & willingness to accommodate my needs."

  • "I have been here many times with friends and family and this small funky and a bit sultry little restaurant never is disappointing. The menu has a slightly trendy twist on southern and cajun comfort cooking. The restaurant's patron demographics generally tends to lean towards late twenties to forties age group, although we are in the forties to fifty range and don't feel out of place. The bartenders tend to make a nice drink and are engaging. Fun way to start your night out with the gang before moving on as well. They do provide an outside area to sit that is comfortable as well. No views though."

  • "We heard of Memphis during a trip to Newport Beach from a group of locals who recommended it to us - our experience was excellent and the food was amazing! What a great gem that is off the beaten past for vacationers! We highly recommend everything (but especially the fried chicken:)"

  • "Although the exterior of the building could use a little landscape clean-up and interior needs to be updated the food and service were delightful. Liz was friendly and courteous and ensured we enjoyed our meal. I enjoyed the lunch special Half a Shrimp Po'Boy and Gumbo. The Half Po'Boy was plenty of food. My wife enjoyed the Turkey Burger and Sweet Potato Fries. The burger was large and flavorful according to her."
