Diner Reviews
  • "unfortunately the service was terrible and the food disappointing"

  • "Service was impeccable but, given the price, the food is not worth it. It was ok but not great. A little bit pretentious... "

  • "Might be the best meal I've ever had. Service was Extraordinary. Gregory was the Best. VERY pricey, but worth it for a special occasion."

  • "I have been here several times in the last seventeen years and some things do not change. Josiah Citron is there and attentive. The quality of food improves from excellent to very excellent. Service could not be better. One of my guests has a food allergy and staff worked to change dishes."

  • "The sommelier was wonderful and matched our preferences perfectly. The Rose was unbelievably good (Thanks Chris) and I will certainly return, but with trepidation towards the vegetarian menu restrictions. 2 Big negatives for an $800 dinner. Our waiter was terribly dry, uninteresting, and did not help us make our selections. Honestly, he was a turn off to our experience. 2) The vegetarian menu did not allow for any substitutions. Unfortunately, there was something we wanted from the 10 course, something seemingly simple, that we could not swap for on our tasting menu. And, what made that worse was the unexpected focus on mushrooms and rice in the vegetarian menu. Both of those were hug turnoffs for an $800 dining experience."

  • "The quality of food is great. Very fresh. But somehow the main course is just too much for me. I mean the taste. too heavy for my palette. Then the chocolate is also too sweet for me. But then the second desert (sorbet) was very refreshing and definitely save my night. Overall, the whole dining experience was very nice. I enjoyed a lot. Love the bread, by the way."

  • "We went there on restaurant week. The menu is of great value compared to its regular menu. The food is awesome, supplementary $55 for black truffle risotto is worth it. Definitely will come back for the ten menu."

  • "Dinner for 2. We had Wagyu Beef Tartare and Lobster Bolognese as first and second courses. They are both good but to me, the taste seems a little bit repeat. So I would suggest order others as first course if you want to try Lobster Bolognese. For entrees, we had Flat Iron Steak and Aged Liberty Duck. Both of them are amazing. Desserts are Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate and Strawberry. they will never lets you down. I was actually kind of full after I finish half of the Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate but I could not stop eating the rest of it. Definitely worth the price and 1 hour driving. I would like to invite my friends and family to Melisse in the future."

  • "Last time I was at Melisse it was a pretentious, not very good new French restaurant, but that was 15 years ago. Now the decor is current the staff friendly and knowledgeable and the food was first class. My only disappointment was that it took a degree in logic to figure out the menu. Also although I understand the need to charge what they charge, the amount of food was too much and therefore wasteful. One should revisit the menus and offer an a la carte menus where a diner can just get a couple of courses for the great tastes but not have to eat four courses. That is the only thing that would keep me from returning"

  • "We have had meals at many top ranked restaurants in Paris, London and New York, and Mélisse is the equal of any of them anywhere. We had a fabulous meal (the 10 prix fixe) with a wonderful wine pairing and could not have been more pleased."

  • "Wonderful creative dining experience. Great food and presentation. Valet parking and quiet refined experience. Wine interesting and unusual selection. Beautiful restaurant. Too formal for my taste. Good for small groups or date night."

  • "A very rare occasion when a family can be treated to an experience not found these days in a multi-course meal, impeccable service, incredible food, ambience and without a hitch in service. Our waiter, Ryan was a perfect compliment to our delicious meal. All should enjoy this type of experience where you're treated like royalty! Cheers"

  • "We had a four-hour gastronomic experience at Melisse, ordering for all the "10" menu. Everything was at the highest level: food, service, sommelier advice and wine. A unique restaurant in the somewhat less formal LA restaurant scene."

  • "We were underprepared for our dinner, expecting good food in California Casual surroundings. In fact everything was very classy, but not intimidating. I would unhesitatingly award 2 Michelin Stars. From our arrival to departure we were looked after very well, ate brilliantly contracted food, food that was more than the sum of its parts. The wine list, and advice, was excellent. On reflection one might feel more comparable dressed well,"

  • "We have eaten twice at Melisse. The style of food preparation is just not to our liking. Service is rather business like."

  • "We can certainly see why Melisse gets two michelin stars; it is nothing short of extraordinary with stand out service from Drew & James. Every dish we savored was exceptional and we appreciated the wine guidance from the som. We can't wait to return."

  • "This was my first experience at Melisse. From the moment my husband and I walked through the front door we were impressed by the level of service and the exquisite food presented to us. We delighted in the prix fixe Valentine's day dinner along with the wine pairing and truffle supplement. All eight courses were beautifully presented and so scrumptious that my descriptions could not do them justice. All I can say is loads of shaved black truffles, beef cheeks, lamb, caviar, oyster, Dungeness crab, yuzu, two desserts, cappuccino, a fireplace, chocolates to take home, and meeting the executive chef made the entire experience well worth the price."

  • "Lots of high-end French restaurants in Chicago, New York and San Francisco feel stuffy and feature heavy and very rich (and even in some cases outdated) food. Melisse is different though. The food feels much more contemporary, lighter and seasonal. Melisse also might have the best service in Los Angeles, which is largely due to their great restaurant manager James. Their Ten menu is one of LA's best tasting menus."

  • "It is obvious with every bite that the food is prepared with not just the expert set of hands, but with true caring that the diner have a memorable experience. And indeed, our party of five thoroughly enjoyed not only the incredible food, but the friendly and attentive staff who made sure that our orders were cooked and served perfectly. The one vegetarian in our party was nervous at first, but her fears quickly faded away upon the first bite of your vegetarian dishes. And we carnavores also were extremely delighted with the fantastic flavors that were presented to us throughout the evening. The service was professional and friendly -- and we were so glad that there wasn't a pretentious employee there! Even their valets were great!"

  • "I had the pleasure of taking 3 up-and-coming young Chef's to Melisse for a birthday celebration. What an unexpected treat! The food was exceptional, the service was great and the som was wonderful. He was funny and very insightful with his wine pairing selections. To top it off Chef Citrin came out and signed Melisse cookbooks for everyone!"

  • "Melisse is elegant and understated. The cuisine, service and ambiance is outstanding. But,be warned, the price is astronomical. However, your special occasion will be truly memorable."

  • "One of the best restaurants in the USA from a cuisine perspective. Dishes are complex, well crafted, and nuanced. Only area for improvement was the wine service."

  • "The food is AMAZING... You must go on a very empty stomach as you will experience 4-11 courses of unforgettable food! The Best! 5 stars up ... WAY UP."

  • "A very special restaurant for a very special occasion -- the staff was considerate and attentive without being pushy. It was a wonderful evening -- something everyone should do at least once!"

  • "My partner and I ordered the carte blanche with truffle supplement. We ordered carte blanche before back in August on our first visit and it was so good that we'd try it again, knowing full well that the menu was likely to be totally different given the season change. Somehow, our extremely high expectations based on our first visit were exceeded. The extremely high level of cooking paired with the encyclopaedic knowledge of our sommelier who gave us fabulous wine (1 bottle of red, 1 bottle of white) meant that we walked away knowing we will be back, and knowing we will be in for a treat again. We look forward to continuing our gastronomic education at Melisse and hope to find other restaurants of similar quality."

  • "This is a three-star Michelin restaurant if Michelin were still rating in Los Angeles. Everything at Melisses is perfect!"
    Dined on 2/20/2014
  • "Went there for a business dinner, which is not what I would normally recommend Melisse for because the menus are basically three different forms of chef's tasting menus, so it is not going to be a quick experience. Nonetheless, it was an excellent experience. The food was outstanding -- some of the best I have ever had -- and the service was perfect, literally. It is the perfect place to take someone who is special to you for a romantic, fancy and wonderful dining experience."

  • "Melisse is our very special occasion, favorite spot. We have dined at Melisse several times, and each time seems better than the last. Most recently we went to celebrate our anniversary, and enjoyed their 7 course meal with wine pairings, and relaxed and indugled for about a 3 hour dining experience. Service is impeccable, ambience is elegant and beautiful, and every course is excellent. Incredible dishes, with our favorites being: split pea soup, scallop, bass, lamb and decadent chocolate! The service was outstanding and the dining experience is one of the best anywhere (though be prepared for $250-$300 per person). I am certain we will return again soon."

  • "The food was excellent. Towards the end of the night chef Josiah Citrin was seated at a table near the exit and he even said goodnight to us... I was extremely impressed by that. It was a very enjoyable experience. Highly recommend for a special occasion."

  • "Superb, fantastic food and service. Only possible complaint is that there are too many people using cell phones in the dining room, it takes away from the experience"
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "I went to the restaurant with a date and did not feel that we were taken seriously as customers. Despite being meticulously asked about dietary preferences before arriving, we were promptly told that these (uncomplicated) preferences precluded us from any of the tasting menus because "well, the chef might allow one substitution, but never more than one". When asked if we were ready to give our food order, we had to inquire whether we could start with a drink (it turns out there was an extensive cocktail list, not initially provided to us). The amuse-bouches were truly wonderful; the regular dishes genuinely mediocre. I don't know the history of Mélisse, but I got the distinct impression of an institution resting on its laurels."

  • "I have heard a lot about Melisse over the years and finally had a chance to go there. I can honestly say it's one of the best I've ever had. The tasting menu was phenomenal and the wine pairing was just as exquisite. Every one should go here once before they die."

  • "Took my husband for his birthday and we enjoyed every minute of it! The food was just wonderful, beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious! We enjoyed a couple of glasses of champagne (pretty reasonable too)! Great ambiance and service!"

  • "Needed a place for a special birthday and this was perfect. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful without being obtrusive. The food was spectacular. We chose the 10 course prix fixe menu, as we were told that while it was a lot of food, it was essentially the same volume as the 5 course menu. It definitely was a lot of food - just tastings of each dish, but they were to be savored, both for flavor and texture. The interior has clean lines with grey/white, very elegant, and with a partition through the center of the room that keeps noise levels very low."

  • "Our meal was outstanding! If you are looking for an excellent dining experience, this is the place. We've been to many of the high end restaurants in Los Angeles and fMelisse is our favorite."

  • "We went there for my husband's birthday, the ambience, service, decor were outstanding and luxurious , yet the food came out in very small quantities and the gap between the dishes was long enough to make me talk to the waiter telling him to speed up as I'm starting to fall asleep. Setting aside that it was expensive than any other restirents we went to in LA."
