Diner Reviews
  • "We took friends from out of town. The wonderful variety of fish entrees and small plates pleased everyone. The noise level was low enough that we could actually talk to one another. Great deserts and a good selection of wines. We had a great time."

  • "We were in town for the burial of a relative at Arlington National Cemetery and wanted a warm and friendly place to host a lunch after the funeral. I spoke to Frank at Mele and told him that I did not know exactly how many people we would have in our party and only had an approximate time for our arrival. Frank and his staff made us feel very welcomed and all of our guests were so impressed with the beautiful décor, friendly service and wonderful food! Thanks to Frank & his staff for giving us a lovely place to gather, enjoy good food and friends -- and to remember our loved one after a very moving service at Arlington National Cemetery. Colonel Aultman was a world traveler and would have loved Mele Bistro!"

  • "I meet with a couple of my friends for lunch here every couple of months and we're always happy with the food, service and ambience. It's become our standard meeting place for the Ladies Who Lunch. Highly recommended!!!"

  • "Although the restaurant was crowded on the Friday night we attended and the atmosphere was nice it was overall less than average. The menu is way too big and all over the place. It tries too hard to please too many and winds up falling short. It took a long time to read the menu, too many items and I kept thinking how can any of these items be very good if there are so many. It was like eating at a buffet and we know at a buffet the food is less than average. The onion soup was tasty but way too much bread below the cheese which made the experience into just eating wet bread. My main course of pasta was less than average. They have this fixation with "fresh" fish from Hawaii. Which is very strange. "

  • "Hard to find the place in the middle of a shopping plaza. But inside, the menu is humongous, the food itself is satisfying (I ate my broccoli, so there!) and the service is fast and friendly. One of our group needed a taxi at the end, and the owner went out to Wilson to flag one down. Is that service or what?"

  • "As advertised, they go to great lengths to bring in top-notch ingredients. My Prince Edward Island mussels ($10.50 appetizer) had small shells and large meats, just barely poached to done. Hawaiian shrimp were incredible ($37 very top $ of the menu), the best shrimp dish I've ever eaten. 8 perfectly grilled x-large shrimp peeled & cleaned with heads & tails on, served over perfect capellini with a tasty red sauce and coconut cream. Others had great salads & a mushroom dish, plus lamb and veal chop. Only scallops were a little disappointing, with a gluey "pesto cream" sauce. Waiter recommended excellent wines at modest prices. Service was a little slow. 4 appetizers, 4 $$$ entrees, 2 bottles wine, 1 dessert, with tax & tip came to $330."

  • "Title says it all. Good was average, they were out of our first choice."

  • "Eating outside very noisy. Appetizer not served. Salad was overpriced for the portion. The burger was delicious and very generous."

  • "Food is very good, but the layout of the restaurant needs work. New owner Still working out the kinks with service and layout (it's a bit of a circus when it's busy), but we've been twice and the food has been very good both times."

  • "Outstanding experience. We enjoyed sharing seafood small plates. Each was better than the next. Fish was clearly very fresh and prepared to perfection. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and provided outstanding recommendations that hit the mark. Despite the restaurant being crowded, service was excellent. I strongly recommend."

  • "Although we have lived nearby for many years, this was our first visit to the newly named Mele Bistro, formerly Village Bistro. We are so glad we tried it. The menu features fresh fish, and plenty of other dishes for those who think they don't like fish. We had chicken piccatta and seafood scallops, both of which were delicious. The bread comes right away, with a small bowl of a special mixture of seven African ground peppers, a small bowl of sea salt, and Spanish olive oil. A very good start to an excellent meal."

  • "A sizable selection of fresh fish flown in from Hawaii, Brazil etc. The owner, Frank, is delightful and describes the day's offerings in great detail. A fabulous neighborhood restaurant with quite a large menu. Highly recommend!"

  • "It was still called Village Bistro last weekend, but a new name is being rolled out to signal an expanded and more varied menu. Great effort by the manager and his staff out front, and the chef out back to please. They succeed admirably, straight through to first-rate cappuccino at the end, inviting a return visit soon."

  • "I've been to Village Bistro several times and I'm always pleased. Love their seafood selections, sauces are wonderful, and the wines are thoughtfully selected. Note that they are making some menu changes and the name of the restaurant is changing to Mele Bistro."

  • "Truly enjoyed our meal from start to finish. The most friendly staff ever. Efficient, but never rushed you. Preparation was perfect as was the presentation. Our feeling is that this place is for adults with an adult menu. I would not have enjoyed the meal if there had been crying or noisy children present. I would very much recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves great food as well as a staff who are actually happy you are there and to serve you!"

  • "I've lived here for so long but never seem to have known about Village Bisteo until a friend picked it for her birthday celebration. We truly enjoyed our seafood choices. This restaurant offers so many fish selections. You can tell that the owner is very passionate about his work when he took the time to explain the origins of each type of fish. We were also intrigued by the restaurant's decor which was designed by the owner himself. It's definitely one of a kind. This was my first visit and is definitely not my last."

  • "don't let the rather funky decor put you off. this restaurant changed hands a year or so ago and the new "decor" is more colorful now. the menu is very long, offering lots to choose from. as others have said, the owner brings around his best catch(es) of the day which have absolutely no odor and are very, very fresh. the seafood and fish are outstanding. other dishes are also good (try the veal picatta). it's an unusual location (a strip mall), but worth a visit and is located within walking distance of the rosslyn metro. wait staff is accommodating to special dietary restrictions. the quality and prices are excellent. it's a bit noisy due to the old tin ceiling."

  • "Village Bistro was such a pleasant surprise! Excellent food and service - the fish was cooked perfectly and the pasta was amazing! Will definitely go back!"

  • "This restaurant was very noisy and it was difficult to talk and be heard. The service was slow, it took a long time to get our food. I made reservations and when we walked in they were not ready for a party of 6. I also asked for a quiet table and that would have been at the back of the restaurant and it was taken. They apparently did not read the reservation. I ordered salmon and it was overcooked. That was disappointing since they seem to 'specialize' in seafood."

  • "Loved the seafood dishes. A little pricey for the portion size, but the best we've tasted in a while."

  • "Menu was confusing...seemed to be 4 pages of the same dishes arranged differently. Service was okay. The food was very good"

  • "3 of my best friends and I tried out village bistro for valentines. I have been before and had an amazing experience so we thought it would be a great valentines outing. The food is incredible, the staff is SO friendly and you can genuinely see how much the owner cares as he talks to every table. The decorated fabulously and the ambiance was perfect. I HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone! It is a gem in Arlington and needs to be visited!"

  • "We went here for Valentine's day, right after the snow storm. The wait time was a little long due to people arriving late because of the weather conditions. The place is small an I was actually ready to be annoyed, but they came up and apologized. They offered everyone in line a complimentary drink from the bar. It was a nice gesture and often I feel like when places are busy the staff can radiate attitude. As a former server myself, that annoys me beyond belief. The staff here was so friendly and there was not even a hint of attitude. Once we were seated, the experience was just as good. The place was decorated nicely and the service was relaxed."

  • "I've eaten at Village Bistro a few times and I have to say that I think the food is amazing. The service is a little 'iffy" but no one is rude or unhelpful. I think that they are just trying to stay out of your way and let you enjoy your meal. This place isn't a wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am kind of a place. They're goal is not to get you in and out as soon as possible. Rather they want you to sit and enjoy your company and all that their tasty food has to offer. Sit, relax, enjoy the atmosphere and the pride they take in their restaurant and their food. I like this place a lot and look forward to dining here again soon!"

  • "They are trying but service is uncoordinated. Very noisy on a Friday night."

  • "So the menu kind of mirrors the decor if you can picture Italian cafe combined with Asian parasols and these weird hanging pieces of fabric. Looks like someone forgot to clean up after a bridal shower. You can find nice items on the menu: my linguine with seafood was very good but the menu needs a major overhaul and could do without the Hawaiin-influence. The waiter really pushed the drinks long after my husband had declined. There's good potential here with minor changes."

  • "We have eaten there several times before in previous years and had all good things to say. This time we found there service slow and the food was just ok. Don't know if this was an off night. Might consider trying it again in the future but there are so many choices in the area."

  • "I've never been in a restaurant that had such a "conflicted and confused" decor and menu. It was quite overwhelming. That being said, the food was very good."

  • "We had an early Sunday evening dinner here before going to the Kennedy Center. Very attentive service and the food was good. We had two small plates - salmon and sea bass -- both good and a very good pasta dish with shrimp and chicken."

  • "This is a friendly neighborhood bistro that is very charming and welcoming. The order was taken in a clockwise rotation around the table. I assumed since they had taken the order that way the people bringing the food would know where it belonged, not so. Table required servers to reach over others to serve. We had made the reservation in advance so I believe they should have planned the seating better. The food was good not great. I had the seafood fettuccine that was advertised to contain shrimp, scallops, calamari and mussels. There were three shrimp, one scallop cut in half to appear as two, four mussels and about a half pound of calamari. Dish should have been called calamari fettuccine. Caesar was blah. Not what I hoped for."

  • "I am a regular customer at the Village Bistro since I live right in the neighborhood. Over the past six years, I have never been disappointed. The food is very good and always consistent. The service is great and the owner is almost always here greeting customers, explaining the menu, making recommendations, and adding his usual personal touch and enthusiasm. The restaurant has been remodeled and I live the new, sophisticated look. The seafood menu is extensive, always very fresh fish. Village Bistro is not a trendy "hipster" restaurant. It is a neighborhood gem with very good food. I highly recommend it."

  • "Village Bistro is located in a non-descript shopping mall, but once you step inside, you're greeted with a homey, artsy vibe. The wait staff was super attentive and sweet, and everyone in my group of 6 loved our meals. The stack of eggplant, tomato and artichoke and the shrimp scampi were standouts - highly recommend. The prices were very fair, and this could double as a family restaurant earlier in the night or a romantic spot later on"
