    Parsis, are a small community in India around 70,000 people who follow the Zoroastrian religion. These Zoroastrians migrated from Persia to India during the muslim conquest, and through the years retained their unique identity. As Chef Mehta is a Parsi, he would be delighted if you could join him on this special day to taste and sample his cultural cuisine, one that bridges the gap between ancient Persia and modern India.

A word from Mehtaphor
Mehtaphor offers a menu inspired by Asian urban tastes and scents and wrapped in Jehangir Mehta's singular chef voice. There's a point of view here and a chef who touches every dish. The restaurant has several intimate dining areas, including a dessert-cocktail bar, a tiny loungy dining area, a true cocktail bar, a time worn wooden communal table. The entire restaurant is awash in glass frontage.

The clean, modern shell is accented by warm golden print fabric on banquettes (with little cubbyholes for purses, bags, briefcases, whatnot...), intricate wooden shutters half way up the expansive windows.

Mehtaphor plans to stay accessible with a menu of $7, $12 and $15 plates; and a wine list of $30-45 bottles and $9-10. From January 2011 a special "Gastro-Kids After School" menu will be available from 2.45 p.m. to 4.45 p.m. which will be more educational than expensive.

  • "Unique delicious offerings. I have dined her half dozen times, dinner only, and have never been disappointed. Chef Mehta knows what he is doing. The main problem is that there is no buzz that you feel in a well received restaurant. The room is all but empty and your love of the unique combinations of food in a neighborhood filled with great eating establishments presents you with a problem....if the word gets out, I will lose the quiet of being the only table occupied in the place. If the word doesn't get out, we risk losing the restaurant entirely . "

  • "I like Jehangir Mehta's food and was excited to go there after a few years. Sadly, I will never go there again. There were 2 Employees there and one appeared to be the manager. They were both rude and incompetent and did not understand customer service. We left after eating one appetizer and were pleasantly surprised by the wonderful service at a restaurant across the street (Austian/German). I have recommended this to people in the past but will be sure to rescind that immediately."

Our wonderful waiter, Sammy made great food suggestions (thought It was all wonderful) and suggested we order everything to share. Great suggestion!! We ate Fresh Oysters with Pop Rocks that were wonderfully briny and slightly sweet and oh so fun as they exploded in our mouths! A rich, earthy pizza made with a puff pastry, goat cheese, crab and truffle oil! OMG!! . . . and a perfectly prepared Hazelnut soufflé (soft inside but not wet) served with home made rum raisin ice cream. It was 90 degrees when we arrived, so we were very casual in shorts.Possibly Inappropriate for such a lovely place, but no one made us feel uncomfortable. We will definitely return again and again"

Mehtaphor, is a larger, nicer space, serves larger portions, but the food just doesn't hit the mark. Each dish left something to be desired. Save your time and money, go to Graffitti instead, if you can get in."

  • "The food is creative and excellent, and I hope to come back many times. The food is a wonderful hybrid of Indian and Middle Eastern flavors with European/American techniques. Chef Mehta's East Village restaurant, Graffiti, is much harder to get into, but Mehtaphor is every bit as good. I suspect its location inside the Duane Street Hotel (and on the edge of Tribeca) takes it off people's radars. The restaurant is a great addition to the neighborhood, which has no other place like it."

  • "Mehtaphor is a gem. It's on the first floor of a Tribeca hotel and is easy to pass by if u don't know it's there or if u didn't see it on open table. There are no big gaudy sign on the street. We were attracted by the unique vegetarian Indian fusion menu mentioned on the website--but this is no ordinary Asian or Indian restaurant. We haven't had so much fun in a long time. Besides the innovative food, the decor is also remarkably clever and pleasing and deserved as much dissection as the cuisine. We were lucky to have arrived early, because I can imagine it's getting packed easily. The youthful wait staff were also energetic and fun and knowledgable."

We had a ressie for 3 people, and they didn't seem to know what to do with us in a nearly empty establishment. TAll their tables were set up for large groups or couples. We ended up at this strange oblong table with nowhere to put our legs due to the awkward table stand. I felt like I was yelling across the table at my one friend. The shrimp ceviche and lambshank were highlights of the meal, oysters and cocktails the low points. Pricing was pretty fair, though, considering ..."

  • "Great food. Innovative Menu and the Tapas style was fun because you always had something new to try. Would go back there again for the food. Seating was just OK. we were at a high table with very uncomfortable stools. One person in our party recently had back surgery but they could not really accommodate us with seating that was more conducive to her needs. The service was spotty. the staff was knowledgeable about the food and overall pretty enthusiastic. However, our waitress forgot our drinks and our desserts until we mentioned that we had been waiting for a while. the outfits they wore did not look professional.Souffle and sundae not that compelling for a pastry chef."

Went on a Saturday night with two friends and I was seated in a backless high stool at a table where the wait staff rudely pushed by me throughout the meal; when I asked to be moved to a regular table, which was open, they said it was reserved when it was unoccupied through for the 90 minutes or so that we were there.   • "Great food ,very inventive with lots of unusual preparations that really work. Only negative is the restautant space is very tight ala a Paris Bistro. Many of the "tables" are raised small circular ones with barstools that have no backs to them.There is also a long wooden table that can seat 12 that is also raised with bar stools. If you are seated there and order a complete dinner that took 1.5 to 2 hours it is very uncomfortable."
