A word from Mehtaphor
Mehtaphor offers a menu inspired by Asian urban tastes and scents and wrapped in Jehangir Mehta's singular chef voice. There's a point of view here and a chef who touches every dish. The restaurant has several intimate dining areas, including a dessert-cocktail bar, a tiny loungy dining area, a true cocktail bar, a time worn wooden communal table. The entire restaurant is awash in glass frontage.

The clean, modern shell is accented by warm golden print fabric on banquettes (with little cubbyholes for purses, bags, briefcases, whatnot...), intricate wooden shutters half way up the expansive windows.

Mehtaphor plans to stay accessible with a menu of $7, $12 and $15 plates; and a wine list of $30-45 bottles and $9-10. From January 2011 a special "Gastro-Kids After School" menu will be available from 2.45 p.m. to 4.45 p.m. which will be more educational than expensive.

Diner Reviews
  • "Friendly wait staff. Flavorful bites. Good place to go if you want a light meal. Tapas style so you are able to taste a number of different plates. Veggie and gluten free menu."

  • "I like Jehangir Mehta's food and was excited to go there after a few years. Sadly, I will never go there again. There were 2 Employees there and one appeared to be the manager. They were both rude and incompetent and did not understand customer service. We left after eating one appetizer and were pleasantly surprised by the wonderful service at a restaurant across the street (Austian/German). I have recommended this to people in the past but will be sure to rescind that immediately."

  • "I have loved eating at Mehtaphor because Chef truly understands how to accommodate food allergies without compromising flavor... It is so rare that I can eat out but always look forward to incorporating a visit to Mehtaphor when I am in the city , to enjoy Chef Mehta's exquisite flavors without risk:)"

  • "What happened to this restaurant? I was here less than a year ago and it was vibrant, full of energy and full. The night I dined, there were only two other tables the entire night. It appears the menu has changed and I haven't read any of the other reviews before coming back. Perhaps I should have!"

  • "Great food, excellent for vegetarians (whole menu for vegetarians). The souffle in the best ever. We also enjoyed the dumpling chaat a lot."

  • "Great spot to catch up with friends / acquaintances. Love their lychee martini and truffle goat cheese pizza. On the pricier side for tapas style, smaller dishes, but good ambience for talking."

  • "The first wine that we ordered tasted of vinegar. It seemed the bottle had been open for some time. The food was not worth the price. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "Not mesmerizing. The food was sadly uninspired, taste-wise basic and blend.....for a 5 course tasting menu it was a complete miss. A culinary metaphor i would have rather not seen."

  • "the flavors are inventive and fresh We'll be back soon. Remember to tell the server if you don;t like heat. There are some highly spiced dishes that can be dialed down and still remain delectable"

  • "I walked into the restaurant and saw the Zagat rating saying food rating of 24 so expected better. It was decent but not outstanding food. The menu read well but the execution was just OK."

  • "I've been at this restaurant before but it's been about a year since I've been back and it's really gone downhill in the last year. There were 2 employees there when I went and one of them was incompetent and the other was rude. If you go there, that's what you'll have to look forward to. Don't go, just don't even give them a chance."

  • "The food was very mediocore and too pricey for what was given. Would never go back and would not recommend to anyone."

  • "Small, nicely, put together tapas in a asian fusion style. The scalops are to die for. The only think I can remark on is that the our dishes came out very randomly and some of us had to wait for a long while before getting the food. I really recommend you to go here and enjoy the delicious flavors!"

  • "Amazing, fresh, unbelievably creative food served in a Tapas style. Our wonderful waiter, Sammy made great food suggestions (thought It was all wonderful) and suggested we order everything to share. Great suggestion!! We ate Fresh Oysters with Pop Rocks that were wonderfully briny and slightly sweet and oh so fun as they exploded in our mouths! A rich, earthy pizza made with a puff pastry, goat cheese, crab and truffle oil! OMG!! . . . and a perfectly prepared Hazelnut soufflé (soft inside but not wet) served with home made rum raisin ice cream. It was 90 degrees when we arrived, so we were very casual in shorts.Possibly Inappropriate for such a lovely place, but no one made us feel uncomfortable. We will definitely return again and again"
