Diner Reviews
  • "Our waiter, Jonathan, and head waiter/manager, Corey, did a great job as did Wesley, our sommelier on the Bordeaux and wine pairings. We enjoyed the whole evening and the room we were in with 3 other tables of guests. My wife, who normally doesn't like Blue Dressing, actually enjoyed it with the salad wedge, raisins, and roasted pecans. She loved her crab and crab cake course as well. The bordelaise sauce was wonderful with the filet mignon with peppercorns. Chef needs to give a few more teaspoons of sauce for those of us who need to eat it with the potato as well as the steak. The vanilla bourbon cheesecake with caramel was also our top choice for dessert. Note : portions are not large, but are delicious."

  • "We've gone to the McNinch House for over 10 years and each experience has been perfect. The noise level is so low you can hear the soft background music playing. No reataurant roar we find in other places. The food is always exceptional. If you are looking for an inexpensive meal this isn't the place for you. Our dinner with paired wines was over $400 with the 20% gratuity. The food, service and atmosphere combine to make dinner an event. We already look forward to our next visit. "

  • "The McNinch house is still our favorite restaurant in the world. Each course was superb, the service was perfect and the location is historic. A Wonderful evening."

  • "What a wonderful experience. I had heard of McNimch House but never been there. I made reservations on a Friday afternoon for Friday at 6 pm. I had a Charlotte Observer coupon that I had been carrying around for awhile and decided spur of the moment to use it. I called while we were walking to the restaurant since we were both wearing jeans. They said "jeans are discouraged" but said to come anyway since we were on our way. I felt very out of place when we got there because most were dressed up but very comfortable once we were seated. The service is sincerely friendly and obviously experienced. The food, atmosphere and excellent wait staff made this a fantastic experience."

  • "A hidden gem of Charlotte. No other words to describe this restaurant that provides personalixed service and exceptional wine."

  • "Average at best. Specially for what you will end up paying. I honestly dont know how they could have got AAA 4 star award. Food was okay. As a main course I had duck which was not impressive. Not cooked well. Server had a dumb look on his face when I told him about it . I guess since he was the guy parking car as well. Only 3 people servicing the floor. Got our order wrong and then got our bill wrong as well. I am glad I checked. I hope it is written somewhere in fine print but didnt like that they just took 20% grauity by default. Let me be the judge of it. Lot of reviews said you save your money and go somewhere else and oh I wish now I would have listened. Not worth over $300 Find something else."

  • "Since this restaurant is pricey, we could only afford to go on a special occasion. My husband received a birthday card and I got a rose for our anniversary. The dining experience is one to savor. We had wonderful a relaxing cocktail before beginning our 7-course meal. We chose a superb wine that paired with our meal. The waiter and dining manager were very attentive. The food was excellent. My husband who is a big eater, left full despite the smaller portions. The menu choices catered to beef, fish or vegans. It was an event rather than just a night out on the town."

  • "This was our first visit to McNinch House. It was wonderful, flawless, elegant and most of all the food was fantastic. This is most definitely a special occasion place, unless you have a very high income. We went on a weeknight to celebrate our wedding anniversary. There are several small dining areas. It was very private and we felt like special guests in someone's home. The service was perfect: attentive but not hovering, never rushed and never left you wondering "where are they?" We selected the menu offering two appetizers, an entrée and a choice of either a dessert or cheese tray. We also opted for the trilogie wine pairing, which provided a different wine for each course. The whole experience couldn't have been better."

  • "Wanted to have a nice place to dine for our anniversary, something a little different in-town. First time dining at McNinch, and we had a ball. Great service, great food, and the historic home is a perfect setting. Splurge and go for the wine pairing to make it a visit to remember."

  • "Not a place for children Not a place for animated conversation. Excellent food Very pricey which I didn't mind paying bc of the food quality With 1 bottle of wine and 3 teens 2 adults. 650$$ Wine was excellent. Servers great. The lamb and crab cakes are fantastic."

  • "My wife and I went for the 5 courses menu which is the least expensive option ($79pp) but was clearly enough for us. My wife also added the wine pairing option ($55pp) which definitely added a layer of sophistication to the evening. You definitely pay full price for this wonderful 2 hours dinning experience (note that they charge a default 20% service fee) which is sure to build a memorable evening."

  • "A friend and I wanted to take our spouses out for a special evening. After reviewing options,we decided upon the McNinch House. We were extremely pleased with the decision. It proved to be a memorable dining experience that our wives will cherish for some time. We selected the 7 course Grand Menu. Each course was appropriately staggered, and staff knowledgeable and attentive. My friend noted that his filet of beef was the best he has ever tasted. I highly recommend The McNinch House for those seeking a relaxing, special occasion dining experience."

  • "To celebrate our anniversary, my husband and I wanted to do something special and different. We chose McNinch House after seeing the Zagat rating. We were absolutely satisified, as McNinch House helped us make a nice dinner out, a unique experience, and a true celebration. The unique touches included a personalized card wishing us a happy anniversary, as well as the staff being so knowledgeable about the food and wine offerings. The setting was quiet and elegant. We had a wonderful evening and will definitely be back when looking for a SPECIAL evening out."

  • "McNinch House is sort of the last of a dying breed in Charlotte. The wait staff was second to none and were all obviously well-trained. Though my wife and I didn't drink, the wine list was amazing. My wife's lamb (which is the only entree that is a permanent fixture on the menu) was simply amazing. My filet mignon was a tad overcooked and a little too salty, but that is the only "con" I can think of. For a special occasion, I can hardly think of a better place in Charlotte. You will be treated as if you are the most important customer they have. It is also nice to find a place that still requires men to wear jackets and treats a meal as a special experience. The attention to detail was impressive. This is a really special place."

  • "A beautiful old house, privately owned (they live on the upper floors), in a nice downtown neighborhood. Valet parking or park on the street. Despite being an old house on a cold night, the temp inside was warm and comfortable. The menu choices were varied with something for everyone and different experiences based on the number of courses you order. We both ordered the lamb which was tender and tasty. Highly recommended. The main course was a 10. The rest of the meal gets an 8. The wine list is extensive but the wine steward is extremely knowledgable, answering questions and giving info about each wine he serves. This is a quiet, relaxed atmosphere. Not an everyday meal but just what we wanted for my 55 birthday. We will go back."

  • "My mom had been wanting to go here for a while. So for her birthday we made reservations. The house was quaint and upscale. The servers were nice. We were not rushed- a nice leasurly 5 course meal but it did drag a bit at the end (3hours) after dessert and drinks. Overall, glad we tried it and I would recommend it. The selections were good and unique. Howeve I would probably not return any time soon. A once a year special occasion place. Great however if you want a very quiet romantic place!"

  • "When you spend a few hundred dollars you have an expectation. It does not measure up. The food was average and would easily be bested by good eats on Montford for a fifth of the cost. It felt like a place where people go for a special occasion and the ambiance is what they are paying for. At that price point, I expect the Ritz Carlton of service. When I call ahead and inform the chef that we are gluten free and no accommodations were made, that is not service. If you could not accommodate us, please let people know so that they could go somewhere else. The saving grace from our experience was Wesley. He was charming and a knowledgeable sommelier. No return visit expected. This restaurant does not deserve to be so highly rated."

  • "We were warmly greeted and then seated in an elegant Victorian dining room next to a fireplace. The service was impeccable and the food, excellent. The option of sommelier's wine parings, for us, was a stunning plus. Just be careful of the generous pourings with each course."

  • "My boyfriend and I wanted to try another top Charlotte restaurant that had an impeccable wine list. That is exactly what we found at McNinch House. The menu can be a bit confusing, but the wait staff is amazingly helpful. This is the perfect romantic evening for the occasion you choose. It is small, quaint, and quiet with one of the best wine lists we have seen. A very knowledgeable staff served great food in a beautiful house. My only complaint would be that it was quite expensive. But, we were expecting that with the service and food we had."

  • "This was a once-in-a-blue moon choice for my wife's birthday celebration as it is pricey. Just the two of us, we each went with the five course option with wine pairing. Food and wine were awesome; very small portions as expected, but done superbly. It was very quiet which is good for a romantic dinner, but we could hear many other conversations in the restaurant, so be aware of that. There were some surprises; the sommalier was real personable but messed up the pairing a bit thinking we had ordered a different meal option. Also, they tack on a 20% tip automatically - something I never see with only two people dining. So bring your wallet for a wonderful atmosphere, great food, and an experience you'll remember a long time."

  • "The McNich House offered exceptional romantic dining and a very attentive staff. The Chef's tasting, a 9 course with wine paring was our selection for the evening. Our total meal experience was 3 hours where we were served food and wine that paired splendidly and the evening just seemed to float bye. I rated the food 4 stars, not because anything was lacking but the dessert being good just lacked the lusciousness that the first 8 courses comprised of. On our next special occasion we will be going back to the McNich House."

  • "We had been wanting to go to the McNinch House for over 20 years. We finally tried the restaurant and it did not disappoint us. We chose the 5 and 7 course dinner with wine pairing for the 5 course dinner. The appetizers were outstanding. The entrée was very good and the dessert was excellent. The wine pairing was very good, but not quite as good as we hoped. It is a restaurant for a special occasion and leisurely dining. We will return in the future."

  • "The McNinch House is, in our opinion, the best that Charlotte has to offer. Great ambiance, impeccable service, wonderful food, lovely presentation and a very nice wine list. A little on the expensive side, but well worth the cost. All the rave reviews were completely accurate. A memorable dining experience. It's on our "short list" of favorite restaurants."

  • "Not even the best restaurant in fourth ward. Food was mediocre at best. If they want to charge those prices and require five course meals, the food should blow you away. It does not come close. Go to Barrington's or Zebra for better food."
    Dined on 12/19/2013
  • "Don't get me wrong, the food received was awesome. However, we walked out 3 hours later hungry as the portions are extremely small and there is a 30 min wait between each course even with only 1 other table present. It was nice for our anniversary but will not be going back as very expensive and would rather eat at Bentley's on 27 if spending almost $300 for a dinner for 2."

  • "We have been eating at the McNinch House during the Christmas holidays for over 10 years. Each room in the house is decorated beautifully and the food, service and staff provide a wonderful dining experience. It would difficult to imagine a better place in Charlotte to celebrate the season or a special occasion than the McNinch House."

  • "You dont find many places like this. Maybe in SanFransisco. The attention to detail with the wonderful Victorian table settings and the creative presentation of the food--It's delicious, slow paced and elegant. A great experience. It's not just dinner, it's an entire evening. I've been going for 25 years and it is still awesome."

  • "We had the chef's 9 course diner along with the accompanying wine pairings. The three appetizer courses were excellent; actually the crab cakes were outstanding. This was followed by three entrees, local fish, duck and the finally an extremely tender filet. All three entrees would have been considered a full serving in Europe and each was paired well with a matching wine. This was followed by a cheese course and finally a sweet cheese cake concluding the evening. We have traveled to New York to visit several of the "iron chefs' restaurants and actually this local experience compares favorably. At Christmas time the converted house is beautifully decorated and very festive. It was an outstanding location to celebrate our anniversary."

  • "McNinch House was hands down the best possible choice for a memorable evening with my cousin and 84 year old French aunt who were in town for a short stay. Absolutely deserving of their four diamond status. Our evening was the picture of perfection from the moment we entered this wonderfully restored Charlotte historic landmark home. I lack the sophistication of vocabulary to even begin to put into words how wonderful the food was so I will have to go with simply saying, this was the best meal I have ever been served. Might not the place to be if you are in a rush or on a budget as McNinch House is more than a fine restaurant, it is an experience to be savored and remembered for a lifetime."

  • "The servings don't match the pricing. When you add wine paring with your meal the wine selection was really bad, and extremely expensive."

  • "Overall, very good. Food and wine were terrific, service was pretty good, but could have been better. Hostess was friendly and helpful, but we had about a 15 minute gap after being seated before our waiter came to our table and I had to get up and go ask the hostess if we could have a cocktail while waiting rather than being greeted by our waiter within your normal 2-5 minutes. Our 6 pm reservation must have been a little too early for them."

  • "After more than 20 years of waiting for the perfect time to visit The McNinch House for dinner, my wife and I and another couple had dinner this week for the first time and it was an unbelievable experience. Get ready to sit for 3 hours for one of the most relaxing dinner experiences featuring various courses off a limited but very impressive menu. The old, antique-type atmosphere of this past Mayor's Mansion is hard to duplicate and the fixtures in it, including the dinnerware, will take you back to the early 1900's. Courses are served in well-timed intervals and you are never rushed. The service is impeccable and delivers absolutely wonderful food and an exceptional wine list to choose from. We will be back."

  • "McNinch house is tucked away in Charlotte's uptown 4th Ward neighborhood in a historic victorian home. The 5 star restaurant and wine list will make you feel like you are in another place. Always a fantastic experience from the food, wine to service. Great for special occasions but dont disregard for a night away from all the chains and everyday Charlotte places. You can choose from 3 course to 9 course chef tasting menu. The charm and character of McNinch is like no other in the area."
