A word from McNamara's Steak and Chop House
McNamara’s is Located in the center of the TriValley. McNamara's Steak and Chop House (patterned after the famous chop houses in Chicago) is situated near the junction of Highway 580 and 680, less than three miles from Bishop Ranch and Hacienda Business Park. Surrounded by San Ramon, Pleasanton and Castro Valley, the restaurant is within minutes from Danville, Alamo and Livermore. If you're from out of town, McNamara’s is within two miles or less of most of the major hotels.

We serve only the finest hand selected Midwestern corn fed Angus beef, aged for a minimum of 21 days. All of our fish is delivered fresh daily. Our bread is hand crafted and baked fresh 7 days per week. Our award winning wine list features some of the finest wines available in California.

  • "We ordered the Mac n cheese for our kids, and it came as a watery noodle soup and tastes like old cheese that they tried to water down with milk. None of the food was seasoned, and had no taste. The scalloped potatoes also tasted old, and the texture was off, as if they attempted to reheat and serve again. NEVER GOING BACK"

  • "This was not our first visit to McNamara's. It's an old-fashioned, detail-oriented restaurant. Wait staff is excellent. Food is very good. (House smoked salmon appetizer is amazing!) We enjoyed the ability to be pampered a bit, and to relax over a leisurely dinner. But we also found it a bit sad that there were so many empty tables. It was a Saturday night, and we really didn't even need our reservation; the place was mostly empty. That's too bad. It's a bit pricey, but worth the luxury."

  • "Second time in 6 months for dinner and found the meal above par. Steak and Pork Chop large and delicious. The special " Cajan Prime Rib w/ 3 coconut shrimp" was great along with shrimp-lobster tomato bisque. Very comfortable seating and atmosphere, A little dark for menu reading. Will go back...."

  • "On a Sunday evening at 7pm, the place was dead. The chop house salad was overdressed. The pear salad had beets instead of pears. The steak had no flavor. The baked potatoes were overcooked. The creamed spinach was tasty but runny. The brownie a la mode was actually quite good. Service was very good, but the fact that the place was empty took away from the ambience. We will not return."

  • "Our meal at McNamara's has to rank as one of the worst meals out that I have ever had. The horse radish mixed in with the oyster sauce was so hot that it made the sauce inedible. While the prime rib was OK the fish was bland. The decaf coffee was so strong that it was undrinkable (and I regularly order Starbucks dark roast). The wines on the wine list were way overpriced at about 3 times retail. I would recommend that you stay away from McNamara's."

  • "Filet Mignon and prime rib were very good. Cooked exactly as requested. Beef quality was excellent, very tender and flavorful. Side dishes of au gratin potatoes was overly salty and mixed vegetables overly cooked though. We had the starter of Oysters Rockefeller that was also too salty and not warmed thoroughly through in oven. Could not detect much oyster in each shell among the mix of strong cheeses and bread crumbs. Would not recommend that starter."

  • "We had a party of five for a business dinner. I had a 26 oz Rib eye (about $36) that was a succulent and delicious medium-rare. We had one vegan on our team and they were able to provide an assortment of tasty vegetable dishes such as marinated mushrooms etc. Of note, they have a nice wine list at reasonable pricing. One of our party is a real wine enthusiast and he was able to pick a nice sparkling wine and then two bottles of reds to match the meal. A nice quiet table made it easy for us to speak. Service was friendly and prompt but not overbearing. I went home and told my wife that I want to take her to McNamara's!"

  • "Visited McNamara's on Saturday evening for dinner and was quickly seated as per our opentable reservation. However, no specials menu was read/presented to us at any point and we didn't even know there were specials until we heard OUR waiter reciting it to the table next to us. No one refilled my water glass once and my dining partner had to ask for another Manhattan when his glass had lain empty for about 10 minutes. The waiter didn't look particularly stretched between tables, so I'm not sure what happened with us. Perhaps because we were a younger couple? We're in our late twenties, it's not like we were 15 on our first date. Disappointing service to say the least, but food was satisfactory. Prime rib and Filet Mignon were tasty!"

  • "Went for a dinner to celebrate a family success. Service was attentive without being cloying, Appetizers were consumed with gusto. Three different entrees were ordered, including one of the evening's specials. The food was excellently prepared, delicious, and nicely presented. I never heard anyone say "this could be a bit more...." We were all too busy enjoying the meal. Two chocolate brownie desserts were ordered, and I was given a taste. I now have a new definition for the word "decadent." Wow!!! A bit pricey, but as they say, "you get what you pay for." This dining experience was well worth what it cost."

  • "It was our Anniversary/birthday which our host and waitress never acknowledged. The waitress was pleasant and perfunctory but could of been more attentive. Our crabcake appetizer was burnt on the bottom. Our busboy was the only person to tell and our concern fell on deaf ears. The salad was very overdressed. The steak was the highlight of our meal. When we spend a couple of large bills on a meat we have certain expectations. A little more attention to detail and this meal could of been perfect. We all vote with our dining dollars. McNamara's will not receive our vote."

  • "My husband and I went to dinner here for Valentine's Day but the night after to avoid any crowds. It was just okay. The food was good, but for the price it should have been a lot better. And, when they brought out the food, my husband's order was incorrect. So, he had to sit there waiting for his correct meal while I'm eating mine. I shared with him so he ate half my meal while waiting for his correct meal. You would have thought they would have given him a free drink or given us a free dessert or a free appetizer or some kind of compensation for the snafu, but they didn't. Didn't even offer. For that kind of money, the customer service should have been a lot higher! We won't be going back to that restaurant any time soon."

  • "Disappointed in the food, especially with it being so overpriced for what we got. My husband and I both ordered "specials". His swordsteak was overcooked in some areas and okay in others - inconsistent. I got the filet and lobster. The lobster was so overcooked and dry that I didn't even enjoy it. Since this was our Valentine's dinner and a quite expensive one, we were less than thrilled. We won't be returning."

  • "It seems silly to commend a steakhouse on the quality of their steak, but this steak was incredible! It had a good sear, good flavor, and was cooked perfectly. I highly recommend the au gratin potatoes to go along with it. It is a lovely facility with an intimate ambiance but still has the charm of a family-run restaurant. This place is a gem and has been a staple of nice restaurants in the tri-valley for quite some time."

  • "I was looking forward to a great steak but I should've known when the appetizers came out. The calamari smelled super fishy, was hard & in edible. The carpaccio had ZERO flavor just raw sliced meat thrown on a plate not even salted. Then I ordered the prime rib, Gross! There's an entire section on the menu devoted to explaining what each cook temp would be, I know how to order a steak- Medium Rare ALWAYS, this was closer to medium WELL & very lean & tasteless. The vegetables appeared & tasted like they were dumped out of a frozen bag, into some water to defrost then onto the plate. My husband ordered the Ribeye which was much better but still not great. My mom ordered the petrale sole, again fishy, over cooked & TERRIBLE."

  • "We'd been here once before, 6 or 7 months ago. I wasn't that impressed on the first visit; my date and I thinking maybe it was just an off night....we'd give it another shot in the future. When I made the reservation on Open Table for this last visit, frankly I didn't remember us having been here before....thought I was going to a new place. My memory kicking after a day or so, thanks to my Date having a better memory than I. Figured this was as good a time as any for that second chance; and I'm very glad we came back. I give this place high marks all around on this visit, and I have a feeling that this is the norm. Service and food were very good and it's a nice spot to spend an evening. We will come back, and I'd recommend it to anyone."

  • "I can't begin to describe how awful our experience was. The service was good, the ambience was good. However, each dish we ordered was terrible. Starting with a warm beer, the appetizer was flavorless, the beefsteak tomato salad had NO flavor and the tomato wasn't ripe. The house salad came with stringy cooked onions and peppers and couldn't be eaten. The steaks were both flavorless. How any one can ruin a filet mignon is beyond me but it had zero flavor. My husbands Prime Rib chop was tough but chewy and an overall poor piece of meat. The side of potatoes tasted like watery cheese with undercooked potatoes and the smashed potatoes must have come out of a box. The desserts were another huge disappointment. The cheesecake was frozen."

  • "I have had the opportunity to dine multiple times at this lovely place and have enjoyed each and every time. The ambience is outstanding, prof servers and I love when the pianist plays. Although the prices have always been on the upper end it seems that the prices have recently been increased significatly. For two adults and 1 child the bill was $170, this past bill will keep me away a little longer this time."

  • "This was our first AND last visit to McNamaras. The atmosphere was very nice, overall it should be a great restaurant. But we were not impressed. Our waitress, while friendly, needs a refresher course in professionalism - taking the ladies orders first, not reaching across in front of plates or lifting menus over people's heads. The food was very disappointing. I had filet mignon medallions with crab bernaise - the medallions were tiny, very little crab or bernaise sauce, and the medallions were served on a bed of what tasted like fried potatoes. Two sides of potatoes? Rather odd.The au gratin potatoes tasted like they came out of a box. My husband had a rib eye which arrived cold. For the prices, we expected much better, we won't be back."

  • "I did the reservation online which worked well. I was asked if we were celebrating anything. I said yes , my daughter's b'day. Great since they asked this meant,they planned something nice to acknowledge her b'day. Otherwise why would you ask? Wrong....it was never mentioned at all...even though we had gifts with us at the table. I don't mind expensive meals but normally the food is great (it wasn't) the service is great, no one even stopped by to see how we were doing (maître de) and yes it was expensive. Not a horrible night but either the Manager took the night off or they need to find a new Manager. I don't plan on going back. I guess that's obvious."

They have a small, but excellent wine list and the menu is extensive, with beef, lamb, veal, fish, chicken and pasta dishes available. Wonderful first experience."

The steaks were excellent, both the rib-eye special and the New York, tender and cooked to order. The asiago potatoes were OK, next time I'd order baked. The wine list was quite varied, but limited in options if you only wish to order by the glass."
