A word from McMillin's Dining Room
Roche Harbor’s McMillin's Restaurant is located in the historic home of John S. McMillin built in 1886. In 1956, the late Reuben J. Tarte and his son, Neil, purchased Roche Harbor. By 1958, the Tarte family had restored many historic sites, including the restaurant, which was once the home of John S. McMillin. Additional seating in the restaurant was added in 1964, and the gazebo and deck were completed in 1977. On March 15, 1989, the Tarte family sold the resort to the current owners.

For over 40 years, the tradition of excellence has continued at Roche Harbor, the landmark boating and leisure destination resort that exists today. The restaurant remains a favorite for those who trek by land and sea to enjoy a truly unique dining experience on the very northwest tip of the Pacific Northwest.

  • "Very good meal and presentation made it all the more a delightful dining experience. Don't skip dessert! We liked the view from our table."

  • "Food was the best we have had there. the smalll plates were just the right size with a salad. Service was achingly slow at first.. We waited 15 minutes before someone came to our table with something other than water. But everything else was fantastic. Martini's wonderful as well. Cannot wait to come back with just the two of us!"

  • "The meal was good but very overpriced.. The service was excellent. The baked cobbler was mediocre. We both felt that in Seattle we could have had a meal of this caliber for half the price. But a lot of that was our fault for not ordering more carefully"

  • "We brought friends from Norway on 7/16. The food could not have tasted better. Everyone raved about their selected dishes."

  • "The restaurant was packed, which in turn caused very slow service. We were only a party of 2, and were at the restaurant for two hours. Dinner was flavorful, but the portions were very small. We ended up getting a second serving of bread. For $110, I would expect more food. Great ambiance and views though."

  • "Wonderful food. Great service! Thank you for a memorable evening!"

  • "As always, McMillin's at Roche Harbor is fabulous. The new smaller plate menu is a nice option, for a lighter dinner. Although, I miss the Scallops in Bacon Relish very much. Add the Maytag Blue Cheese Salad and split between 2, soooo good. The cocktails are generous, so you don't feel like you overpaid. The service is excellent, and we always enjoy our special time at this restaurant."

  • "We love to have one special dinner here each time we come....on this third time we were not disappointed. We had a variety of foods from crab appetizer to beef to seafood. We loved it all. What has changed since we were here 3 years ago is that they have added small plates to the menu....fabulous idea since their full entree dishes are very large. So now many are offered as small plates too. Love it!"

  • "My favorite restaurant in the Pacific Northwest. Outstanding service and views. Always pure perfection. Not to mention the location, the crown jewel of the San Juan Islands, Roche Harbor <3 Will be back again soon!"

  • "We had a window table and had dinner at 5:45 so not very much noise. The view was beautiful of the water and the marina. We had the prime rib and it melted in our mouth. Worth the expense. "

  • "We eat at McMillins every year. Historically fantastic, but this time was different. The menu is now divided into small and entrée portions. Small is really small (3 oz Filet?), but not the price. Apparently you order more than 1, but that adds up at $20+/small plate. Many dishes, like the Filet weren't replicated on the entrée and small lists. Also missed the meatloaf and vegetables were few and far between on either menu. Many opted for the prix fixe menu - not that great though. Our server seemed annoyed when we asked questions as to how the menu worked. Overall, the setting & views over the harbor during Colors can't be beat. However, we have seen that many times and am not sure we will be back unless things change."

  • "McMillin's never disappoints. The food is always wonderful, the service (thank you, Samil!) is great and adds to the overall experience, but you truly cannot beat the view as the sun is going down and the Colors ceremony begins. Whether it's a celebratory dinner or just soaking in all that Roche Harbor has to offer, McMillin's Dining Room is there to impress. "

  • "They've done a good job writing the menu, but not as great making the food live up. The menu reads like a foodie spot, but the actual food and wine list are just good, not great. No foodie is going to be wowed by this restaurant, but it's a perfectly fine place for anyone staying in or near the resort."

  • "McMillan's is a gem.. Beautiful old historic building with great views.. The food is fresh, Pacific Northwest traditional. Everything is prepared with care and delicious! Prime rib is outstanding! Service is wonderful and the ambience is as well!"

  • "We felt bad for our waitress, she seemed to be the only server in the restaurant on a Saturday night at 7pm. Since she was so slammed, our food was likely sitting on the counter for too long waiting to come to our table and as a result, arrived lukewarm (not hot). The waitress was friendly, but seemed somewhat frantic. The food, besides being on the colder end of the spectrum, was mediocre at best. But the view of the harbor was great!"

  • "Great place to go for winter love. Don't be scared of snow."

  • "Sunday night is very quiet in the winter months. The restaurant has prime rib on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We both ordered the prime rib and were disappointed in the quality of the beef. It was cooked perfectly and the potatoes and horseradish were perfect but the meat was very chewy. I think the beef was a lower quality roast because there was very little fat marbled throughout the cut. I would definitely dine here again but I would not order the prime rib."

  • "Hard to find, but the food is delicious. They ran out of the two dishes I really wanted to try (prime rib and salmon), but the alternatives I tried were really good. The calamari with cranberries is amazing."

  • "McMillin's has the same charm and special ambiance that it did 40 years ago when I worked here as a teenager. The staff was friendly and professional. The food was amazing and affordable. My husband had the prime rib - said it was the best he's ever had. He had theknife and fork caesar salad that provided some comic relief when pieces flew off his plate. I had the fresh halibut and bleu cheese salad. Our wait person Kerry recommended outstanding wines to complement our meals. A special anniversary warm triple chocolate with ice cream dessert arrived at the end of our meal. Nice touch guys! The view of the Marina from our table is unlike any other marina view. Roche Harbor is a very special place that needs to be experienced and cherished."

  • "After not having been to Roche Harbor in nearly a decade, MacMillans was a real treat. The Prime Rib was excellent and the serving size is ample. The smaller potions on the Chef Tasting Menu were nice, however, they were quite small and certainly did not reflect the $. I would love to see a Chef Tasting Menu along with normal size entree offerings - like they have with the Prime Rib. Overall, MacMillans is an excellent option when in Roche Harbor and we will DEFINITELY return."

  • "McMillans is always a great place for a meal, overloooking the habor. They have changed their menu to include many small plates so diners can sample the many good choices on the menu. We really enjoyed this change."

  • "This restaurant has been a favorite of ours for many years. This time, the food remained excellent, but the portions were diminutive and the prices very high. Our waiter was a bit snooty and not too attentive. We were celebrating our anniversary and my husband's birthday. He enjoyed it and we may come back for a very special occasion, but won't make it a habit. (we always enjoy the color guard ceremony, but can enjoy that from the restaurant below."

  • "Five of us (3 children and 2 adults) enjoyed a fine meal after spending a few hours zip lining. The food was amazing and while we had 3 children (one picky eater, one vegetarian and one gluten free) there was something for everyone!"

  • "For many years we have re-entered the US at Roche Harbor and celebrated another happy boat vacation with dinner at McMillan's timed to coincide with the striking of the colors ceremony. We have always enjoyed ourselves and the food was good, if not memorable. This year we found they had changed the menu and the food was outstanding. They were especially gracious about making sure our part of six had a window table and we had wonderful service from our server, Kerry."

  • "Six Girlfriends have been to Roche Harbor for 24 years and dine at McMillins every year to enjoy Colors and a great meal. They were accommodating for giving us our favorite window table. Seafood Mix and the Scallops were great. Lamb special was on a very small plate with small portions and it wasn't that good. Prime Rib wasn't real tender and only half was eaten. Oyster and Mussel appetizers were ordered and were delicious. We corked a wine and purchased a bottle. Our waiter added a Rum drink in to our bill, which we caught. Overall great view, seafood is good and we will be back. Best Bloody Mary's ever and they are a tradition at Roche Harbor for Six Girl Friends making a yearly escape."

  • "I felt like I had to walk forever after I parked. The bad part was after the meal the hike was all uphill. After the fact we found out you could get a golf cart . Once in the resort area there were no signs telling us where the restaurant was and people we asked either didn't know or gave vague direction. My GPS only got me within about Hal's a mile."

  • "Mcmillan's is one of our favorite spots at Roche. They have gone to a tasting menu smaller portions.which is fine if you would like to order appetizers, salad and desserts.Be aware the entree portion is is only 3 oz. which is small. The sides are small also. 3 asparagus and tablespoon of potato. The first time we visited they were offering one lamb chop as the lamb of the evening.. They have redeem themselves and at this visit and had a rack of lamb to offer. Which had a few fingerlings potatoes to accompany it. If you want full portions you need to look at the back of the menu where they offer prime rib and steaks. It is unfortunate that they don't offer larger fish portions. I wish they offered a better selection of salads also."

  • "I had read other reviews about McMillan's before making reservations, and even though the reviews were all positive, I was still skeptical whether the food would be good enough to justify the prices. Now that we have eaten here, I can safely say it was totally worth it an we will go back the next time we go to Roche Harbor. When we were there, they had changed the menu to a tasting menu which I thought was great. We ordered an appetizer, salad, entree and dessert, and didn't leave feeling like we might explode. The tenderloin and salmon entrees were some of the best we've had. Everything was delicious, I would highly recommend."

  • "McMillin's is a delicious and scenic destination for a special dinner. Menu items are served as small plates so diners must order several items. All of our choices were perfectly cooked and were delicious. Our only negative was the attitude of the "hostess" who was arrogant about the availability of deck side dining. We had made our reservation at least a month ahead and had requested a deck side table; one; our request was ignored and then denied with a superior attitude. fortunately, our server was top notch."

  • "7:00 reservation at a restaurant that spotlights its prime rib and everyone we spoke to said get the prime rib and they were out of prime rib. At 7:00 during high tourist season? Really? We did have a nice meal and the service was nearly excellent, the only problem being the wine selections ran behind the food service. The new tasting menu was fun although I'm not sure it offered up the experience I was expecting. The interior decor is tired and unimaginative, cheap wall paneling doesn't make it, more's expected at a premium restaurant. SJL is an arid environment but paper table coverings on top of the white cloth is really tacky. Laundering lots of white tablecloths is an environmental issue but there has to be a better solution."

  • "not successfully. It used to be very expensive, portions were absurdly large, and the menu was old-fashioned. We loved it that way. There's a new chef who's a wiz in the kitchen - everything we tasted was superb. But you need to be a genius to figure how to have an appropriately-sized meal. 1st problem: "amuse bouches" are not something you're supposed to pay for. 2nd problem: much of the rest of the menu is now small plates. Very small, like 1 small lamb chop for $18.95. My husband ordered one of the few dishes remaining from the old menu and didn't have this problem. Third problem: service. Our waitress never brought one of the dishes we ordered, nor any bread. She tried to make up for it with a free dessert, but by then it was too late."

  • "My husband and I recently stayed at Roche Harbor for a romantic weekend. I was very excited for a special dinner at McMillin's Dining Room. I was sadly disappointed. The table we were seated at was cramped. There was a very loud party with several children at the next table. The waitress we had couldn't remember the specials. She told us that they'd recently redone the menu to be smaller portion sizes (as people weren't finishing what was on the plate - her words!), but kept the same prices. My salad was about 1/2 cup of bitter white lettuce stems and one chunk of blue cheese for $9! Terrible. Our prime rib (we both got) was BLAND! Took waitress 25 minutes to ask about dessert after table being cleared. Never again!"

  • "The corner table looking out over a quiet harbor near sunset was perfect for a romantic anniversary dinner...it was a mid-week evening after the holiday weekend, so the restaurant was not full of visiting boaters who might have changed the ambience we experienced...the scallops and locally-grown lamb were delicious and the complimentary dessert was a nice surprise...service was friendly and attentive...McMillin's and the Roche Harbor Resort will see us again for special occasions."
