Diner Reviews
  • "The ambiance is great, the food is great but the service is spotty."

  • "We had an adequate meal at McLoone's though the overall experience left me feeling that I won't be coming back anytime soon. The mussels I had as my appetizer were tiny and my tuna entree was lukewarm and chewy. Using the restroom was an awful experience as papers were strewn all over the floor and the odor was nearly unbearable. For a restaurant that clearly seeks to offer an upscale experience at an equally upscale price, this was a supremely disappointing evening."

  • "Reservations are required well in advance to attend this restaurant - knowing that we made the reservations early and were easily accommodated. The food and service were excellent! We will be returning!"

  • "I had to send my dish back since it tasted as if I were eating salt. I fought myself to finish my lobster bisque wondering if it really had any lobster in it or what its ingredients were. Mediocre service."

  • "Awesome view, food tasted great...wait staff not attentive and made several mistakes with our order, forgot to bring extra things we asked for like sour cream/butter (baked potato literally not served with anything on it, really? for that price...) Had to ask for more water several times, and didn't receive an ice bucket at any point in the night for our wine. Generally not picky people, so we would definitely go back! Indoor band was great, and the Spinach dip, Skirt steak and NY Strip were ALL excellent. Restaurant clean with amazing ambience. Need more experienced staff for such a gorgeous restaurant. Pricing a teeny bit high, but nothing too crazy. We'll be back!"

  • "A day before my big 28 my BF of almost 4 years took me to the McLoon's Boathouse for an early Romantic Birthday celebration. The food was fantastic, the service was attentive yet not overbearing, and the view was absolutely stunning for what was expected to be a romatic weekend. After dinner we took a walk down to the lake. Little did I know that I would be popped the question! This place will now hold a very special place in my heart."

  • "Food was very good and portions were generous. Took too long for our soup to arrive (40 minutes after ordering). Much too noisy for conversation."

  • "My husband and I went here for our anniversary and were looking forward to an incredible view and great food. Unfortunately in was like a monsoon outside so we didn't see much except for rain and lighting. The food was ok, nothing special And the service was very slow. They did not manage the people coming on from the outside area well and I think our waitress got overwhelmed by the amount of people who chose to seat themselves. Overall it was a good night but overpriced for the overall experience."

  • "Have been to the restaurant many times. I keep hoping the food will be better - but I'm always disappointed. The bread is warm, but stale. The calamari is tasteless and limp. And to add insult to injury - 3 appetizers, 1 entree, and 2 drinks ($120.00 w/tip)."

  • "Had table booked for 8, we wanted to sit outside but was told that would be another 40 min wait! Service was slow & the food is not that great. For the prices we certainly expected better!"
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "Open the door to walk in and remembered how loud the bar really was. the entire restaurant is loud and it is difficult to converse in a conversational voice across the table. I am sure that the out side tables are much better. this aside, the waitstaff were pleasant, cordial and efficient. the food was on par with other venues of the price range. beverages were adequate and well presented. desserts were very good."

  • "When we made the reservation we stated it was a Birthday. It wad not communicated to anyone. The waitress needs to slow down and listen. We requested Champaign as a surprise to the birthday person bit she was so loud about it she gave our away"

  • "Our past visits to McCloone's were very nice dining experiences: the food was good, the water view was fabulous, the service attentive. On my most recent visit, we were denied the table of our choice, even though it was vacant and we had reservations. The main dining room had a peculiar smell in the carpeting, that my guest noticed immediately, and when we were moved to the bar area, the silverware was encrusted with food debris. McCloone's has a distinctly chain-like feel to it now. Considering how expensive it is, my guest and I decided to leave, and dined instead at the Highlawn Pavillion."

  • "I was there for dinner....would have preferred lunch. The pasta dish was ok. I had reservations that also included that I wanted to sit outsie. I found out while I was there that reservations are only for inside not outside. So I had to wait 30 minutes for a table. It wasn't too bad...we walked around the lake. That killed the time that we were waiting."

  • "Nice setting, good food, great service. We weren't disappointed in any way. We would have tried sitting outside with a wonderful view of the lake, but it was a bit chilly. The main dining room was also attractive. The place had a high noise level, but that's understandable given that the US team was playing that evening in the World Cup. The prices were on the high end, but it was a special occasion for us and we were happy we went."

  • "Good quality, reasonably priced burgers, but the mac-cheese entrée is on the bland side (however the $10 optional lobster addition was quite good). Decent food (a bit overpriced in some cases) in a nice atmosphere, but the highlight is the outdoor seating, which is very popular and not reservable. Luckily there are now a few ways to kill time within walking distance - play a round of mini golf, walk or paddle around the reservoir or even visit the zoo. Essex county has done a very nice job bringing this area to life - plan to spend an afternoon and finish the day at McLoone's."

  • "Even with an 8 p.m. reservation through "Open Table," they treated me like a walkup customer and I had to wait about an hour and 15 minutes for an outside table. When I asked the woman at the desk, she said that's how they do it when it's really busy. I had been here before about a year ago. Menu is the same. Food is average at best. Service is slow. But the setting overlooking the lake, with nice tunes in the background, was lovely and helped overcome the shortcomings."

  • "I don't think waiting two hours for food is acceptable. They said they were slammed with graduation parties but tell us when we check in so we can decide to leave. This was a a lunch to get family from California together with the east coast cousins so no one wanted to leave until the meal was served. Many calls had to be made to change other plans/appointments waiting for the meal. Asst manager, at one and a half hours in, said the food will be right out. Once it came, two orders had cold fries as they were sitting waiting for the rest. That is Not the reason for no tip. The waitress was terrible. Never checked on us; never refilled drinks (we had to stop other servers for that, miscommunicated with kitchen about special request, etc.)"

  • "Made a reservation for 8:15 on a Friday night. We got inside a couple minutes late because there was no parking. Then they made us wait until 8:55. When my husband asked how long if would be when we first got there, they said they were cleaning the table. I'm sorry, but does it take 40 minutes to clean a table? When we finally got seated there were tons of empty tables. I was thoroughly disgusted with this kind of treatment of their guests. No manager came to our table to apologize or try to make up for the experience. I would have much rathered an honest answer than being lied to. I am never wasting my time here again."

  • "The food came out lukewarm but the plates were hot so I imagine that it sat under a heat lamp for a while. The waiter was awful... Didn't even ask if we wanted a second round of drinks. For the price they really need to get their act together. I had been before and had a good enough experience to go back, but this last trip has put me off, so I'll be avoiding the boathouse."

  • "Ask for a table at the window for a beautiful view of the lake. Attentive, friendly service. The food is really good & there are plenty of non-meat options. Amazing cocktails change seasonally. Definitely order the espresso martini! Yum!"

  • "It was Father's Day, but the service was slow at every stage. It took a while until we got menus and a long time before we got the check. We said we didn't want dessert but the waitress insisted on bringing over the dessert tray to show us the dessert we already said twice we didn't want. The food was good and we had a nice view of the reservoir."

  • "Always say this place and decided to take my dad out for Father's day. Ambience was excellent food and drinks were great"

  • "While the atmosphere is rather loud, the noise is overshadowed by the total experience of great food, the view, and the service. They make sure you enjoy your meal and will even give you extra bread and herb seasoned butter to go (at your request). I've been there for special occasions, lunch, date nights, and meeting other couples. I believe they cater to all ages, and Mcloone's Boat House is a West Orange favorite. We will definitely be back to McLoone's Boat House."

  • "waitress was wonderful. she actually waited until we were all finished with our food before clearing the table, which isn't the norm nowadays. also very pleasant and explained the whole scene there to us since it was our first time. food was fair to poor."

  • "My husband surprised me with lunch at McLoone's and we were able to sit on the deck and enjoy the perfect weather and view. Our server, Rob, was excellent and we enjoyed our lunch and drinks very much. Overall, our service was a million times better than the last time we were here, so we will go back and hopefully have Rob take care of us again!"

  • "The good-Good Views, nice interior, Roomy bar. The bad-Had reservation requesting a table outside, but it was a first come, first serve. Pull up to the Valet and waited 10 min before they told us they were no longer parking cars. We go in and the wait list is 1 & 1/2 hours for outdoor and 15 min inside. We choose inside. After an hour at the bar, they sits us next to a window that had a view of two open tables outside. I asked, they still said no. Ordered one of the specials and after they brought us our appetizers, they tell us they are out of the special I ordered. The food was good at least. We did speak with the manager and offered us a $20 gift card. Overall, wasn’t the worst experience. The waitress and manager were very friendly."

  • "My wife and I chose to celebrate our 46th anniversary at McLoone's and we had fun the meal we chose was very good and the service was great. I had crab cakes and my wife had Salmon. We intend to return to try additional dishes. Thank you for a wonderful evening."

  • "We had a reservation for 8:15 but we didn't get seated until 9:00. That was a sour note to start. However the manager Kathy offered us a glass of champagne because of the wait and later when we went outside to sit Kathy again game over and offered us an after dinner drink but we all have coffee instead. I thought it was very nice of her to do all of that and to acknowledge our wait. Most places would not have been as concerned about their guests. Most of all it turned into a fantastic night and would definitely return. My dinner was delicious (crab cakes). Everyone else enjoyed their dinner too. The ambiance outside on the verandah is awesome! To be in west orange and being able to sit out on the water is definitely worth it."

  • "I took my staff here for lunch as a thank-you for all they do. There were 9 of us. We had everything: soups, appetizers, entrees and desserts; no alcoholic drinks. The bill, including tip (I'm a big tipper but we had excellent service) was $350. I had French Onion soup that, somehow, was totally flavorless as was the Boathouse Rigatoni; apparently the chef did not believe in seasoning because I added salt and pepper to both. Everyone else had burgers or sandwiches and they said they were good so apparently I ordered the wrong menu items. The chicken pieces in the pasta I mistook for mushrooms because the meat was so rubbery. Awful. It also took a looooong time to get our food. Go for the view and be ready to season your own food."

  • "We had 8:15 res but weren't seated0 until 8:45. The place was nice but very loud. The appetizers came out very fast but dinner took over 40 minutes to arrive. Service was lacking. Once dinner came had to wait for a steak knife to be brought to he table. Waters never refilled. Dirty appetizer plates not cleared, we had to ask for them to be removed. And the bathrooms were disgusting. Garbage overflowing and out of paper towels. Very expensive for what you received and the lack of service. Won't return. "
