Diner Reviews
  • "If you are used to McLoone's Rumrunner or Pier House you will be disappointed in the Boat House. The menu has a few entrees but is missing some of the good ones. Not sure why they decided to have a limited menu here. Overall the food wasn't good. I had two entrees and sent them back. The best thing I had was my kid's grilled cheese. In the end, it's a place to go for a drink, nice view and for food stick to the basics (salad or sandwich). "

  • "Beautiful place, scenic, and full of ambience. Service was excellent. I was a more than a little disappointed in the taste of the food. It was a very bland. I had the salmon. Mashed potatoes were not good at all. I would be willing to give it another chance. "

  • "The food took over an hour. My order came out wrong. The place is too dark. Bathrooms were smelly. "

  • "I had previously dined here and when doing so had a good experience. This time and being part of a group of five, we were all disappointed. The food was good but the service was definitely lacking. Waiting for drinks were excessive and the delivery of meals also took some time. The one person waiting on our table at times seemed put out. In all fairness though, the number of tables she was responsible for seem excessive. Not sure I will go back again."

  • "Our reservations were for 6:30pm, consequently there were many tables with children, and it was very noisy. My husband and I had an enjoyable evening. He liked his Cajun swordfish very much, I was not so happy with my choice of grilled flank steak as it was rather tough. The reason I had chosen this restaurant was because it was a beautiful evening, and the location is just lovely. We will return."

  • "Have not been here in about 9 months and what a slide. Our table was dirty, they brought the wrong wine, they made a mistake with my credit card and kept it about 15 minutes. They did make corrections but this is a very amateurish staff. The check- in was not friendly and we were given an awful table next to the register and bussing area which I refused. I saw another one and took it. I had a reservation on open table so I was not a walk in. They did comp my friend for the wrong wine, but only after one of the managers got involved. The setting is exquisite and the building very nice but considering it is a few years old it looks dirty and rundown."

  • "We had a 7:30 reservation. We arrived a little after 7:30 on a very rainy night. We waited at least five minutes to get to the person at the desk. He said it 7:45 and we had lost our table. They were offering glasses of champagne to everyone waiting as he added that they were running late. Fortunately we only waited about 10 minutes. The service was ok but the water server consistently bypassed our table. The food was nothing exceptional and seemed a bit overpriced. A much better place to go for happy hour or in warmer weather when you can sit outside and avoid the very high noise level."

  • "This restaurant is very expensive. We were disappointed because the room was noisy and the temperature was so cold my husband had to ask for the fans to be turned off. Other people had their coats on. The bread was burned/overcooked. The rest of the food was delicious."

  • "In a sea of great restaurant options, it is understandable that prior reviews might be mixed. This is not high-end NY-metro haute cusine. But it was very good for what it purports to be. This was our first time for dinner and it was a Monday night. Lobster dishes are featured on Mondays but the full menu is available. Service was prompt and attentive. Drinks were strong and generous. Entree portions were also generous and quite good. The chef twice took time to visit our table, to make recommendations and to see how he did. Our waiter was informed and professional. The building and view are special. This is not the place for the romantic date (at least not for us); but it is a very cool place for a hearty, thoughtful meal."

  • "This was our first time at the Boathouse. My boyfriend wanted to do something special and he had heard great things and so we were excited to experience it fir ourselves. The place was clean, the people were nice and professional and the food was delicious. We will be returning!"

  • "I have been to McCloone's boathouse for lunch, for dinner, and for drinks after work. This time I went for a birthday dinner. McCloone's never disappoints! They always have great food, great service, and a wonderful view the water. I would recommend this restaurant again and again especially in the summer!"

  • "First time here and uncertain because of mixed reviews online. The yellowfin tuna was excellent. It will be nice to go back in warm weather and sit outside and enjoy the bourbon margarita. Band was arriving as we were leaving and I can imagine it gets loud so go early to talk and stay later if you want the bar scene."

  • "We treated 2 favorite friends out to lunch for helping us with some special things. they had never been there before and from the experience they will be back same as us. We stayed and had desert. the staff was great and we walked out of there full and happy."

  • "Been to McCloones several times. Great place for brunch. This particular Saturday night was not memorable. Seated right outside the swinging kitchen doors, the entire restaurant was "scream across the table" loud. The food is always reliable, albeit way too pricey for West Orange NJ. The staff was obviously tired and forced their friendliness. Overall, not a great experience."

  • "I went with my husband, sister and brother-in-law to a Sunday brunch. The restuarant is very nice, we were lucky enough to sit by the fireplace. The brunch was good, but I wouldn't call it great. The bottomless mimosas are a nice touch, but I found the roast beef from the carving station tasty, but stringy. They had all the regular foods, along with oysters, clams and shrimp. There was nothing that blew my socks off about the brunch - I'd say it was a solid - 'Good'."

  • "I had the braised short rib it had no taste along with it came spinach which had very little taste and the mashed potatoes were dry I have eaten here before and it seem each time I visit the taste of the food gets worse. This is echoed by friends that I have eaten with on the prior visits. not sure I'll be back"

  • "I ordered your ahi tuna salad which was tired looking, just some spinach and a couple of cherry tomatoes. Try adding some more vegetables to the salad and the tuna should be chilled not room tmerature."

  • "The casual atmosphere and pleasing view of the natural setting surrounding the Boat House make the dining experience an easy choice. The lunch menu included a range of soups, salads and sandwiches that will satisfy most everyone. The burgers and fries-the popular choice among my tablemates allowed each individual to customize his order with a variety of options. The French Onion Soup - the best I've ever had: its generous slice of artisanal bread soaking in the flavorful broth, topped with the thick layer of melted cheese was filling enough to stand in for a meal. None of my companions were able to resist sampling one of the delicate and crisply-fried onion strings that rested lightly atop the delicious crock full of soup."

  • "Had brunch that was just okay. Mimosa's were included in the price, but were warm from sitting on the end of the bar. The noise level was disturbing. Could not hear my table mates. Will not go back for brunch."

  • "Great place to meet friends for dinner. Entrees are pricey, so we had salads and appetizers instead, and the portions were perfect and they were delicious. Our server was wonderful - attentive and helpful. A little noisy but that's okay. Live music at the bar after dinner and the bar staff was also wonderful. Great experience for a fun night out!"

  • "Mccloones is a great place down the shore and in West Orange but it's the best in the summer to eat outside. In the winter months eat in the bar area."

  • "We went to the zoo and decided to give it a shot for lunch. Right from the entrance the ambiance and deco are very nice and welcoming. Service was impeccable from the beginning through the end. Always there when needed without being suffocating. Food was pretty good and well served. Cocktails were very well made. My only two suggestions would be: 1. Music is a bit too loud and 2. Dessert menu could be improved. Add more variety."

  • "2 appetizers, 2 mains and 2 beers $116 plus tip for food that was pretty much diner quality, Applebees with nicer decor. The place is absolutely huge so it's no surprise the quality of the food is not great. And it's not that I mind eating completely average food but not for those prices. For that price I expect something better. The service was good and the place is probably really pleasant in the summer by the lake. The music in the bathrooms is also comically loud. Not a big deal but quite strange we thought. We will not eat there again."

  • "This was the first time we went to McLoone's and it defintely will not be the last. We were a party of 5 - 4 adults and a 9 month old child. We could not have asked for anything better. From the time we entered the restaurant until we departed we were treated to a wonderful meal by professional staff who ensured we had all of our questions answered and our needs met. My husband needs a gulten free menu and they not only accommodated this request with a wonderful menu but the were very responsive to making some food substitutions and preparing his meal to beyond his expectations or experience. We would definitely reccommend McLoone's as a wonderful dining experience."

  • "This will be my last visit to McLoone's. After being disappointed in the past I decided to give it another try because of it's beautiful location. Never again. My onion soup was tasteless with stringy fried onions on top that added nothing, my gnocci with scallops was swimming in an underseasoned, greasy pool and my chocolate cake was so dry it was almost inedible. The only good part of the meal was our server who was attentive, professional, friendly and very efficient. If only the food could live up to her standards. I've tried McLoone's several times in the past for lunch and dinner and have never had a good meal there. I won't be returning. Even my dining companion commented that it is not known for it's food, but for it's location."

  • "We had very early dinner and the noise level was lower than usual. I was very pleased with my beet salad appetizer. For my entree I ordered Chilean sea bass as listed on the menu, but I don't believe that it actually was. My husband was pleased with his apple walnut salad, but not as happy with his stuffed chicken. We were disappointed that the entrees were brought to our table when we were both in the process of eating our salads. Since the salads were quite generous, we would have appreciated a breather between salad and entree. Since the room was only half filled at this point, there seemed little reason to rush us out, which was the feeling that we both had. The rose for each female diner was a nice touch."
