  • "If you want fresh lobster (after sailing on a ship where you have only had frozen, then broiled, dry lobster) this is a gem."
    Dined on 7/3/2014
  • "The mussels appetizer was very good but the crusty haddock was not: lots of crust and hardly any haddock in it, just a very thin layer of fish in the middle."

  • "Was OK. for the price better food in town. Also so many kids screaming could not think"

  • "I ordered the "too good fish fry" and it was great except my scallops were not fully cooked, the center was not done. I also found the service very slow/poor. otherwise, the food was great and tasty and the chowder was definitely the best. "

  • "Quality of food not as good as in previous years. Food taste and appearance was more like fast food than what one would expect in a fine dining restaurant. Allergies not attended to properly. Atmosphere nothing special. Price was high for what was offered."

  • "We were looking for a downtown location for lunch…chose McKelvie's and were very pleased. The table and seating were comfortable, we enjoyed the ambience and the service was efficient. The seafood chowder and crab cakes were particularly good."

  • "If you are looking for fresh seafood, then you're at the right place. The lobster, fish, mussels, scallops were very juicy and tasty. They do no skimp on the portions. Of course, this isn't your fast food restaurant price either, so be prepared to spend a little. The ambiance isn't set to fine dining as it seems a bit out-dated. I'd still go back as their variety is good."

  • "Four members of my family went to the restaurant on Mother's Day as one of us was visiting from Toronto and he wanted some fresh seafood. Each of our meals was sub standard. The fish was dry, fries were soggy and the Seafood Gratin was mostly a mashed potato dish. The cost of the meal did not reflect the quality at all. The service was very good but we will not return to the restaurant."

  • "There motto above says it all. Best kitchen for fish in Halifax, a city with lots of seafood places. Some alternatives for those who don't want seafood. "

  • "We were recently in Halifax for a large national conference and wanted a non-conference venue for a local seafood dinner with a smaller group. We chose McKelvies, and it was great. The food was fresh, delicious, well-prepared. Service was friendly and prompt. The historic building is beautiful and adds greatly to the ambience. Not to be missed if you're in Halifax."

  • "Whenever visiting Halifax - we make it a point to always have a meal here - usually a late lunch - and are never disappointed. Wonderful seafood and even something delicious for me - a non-seafood eater. Desserts were to die for."

  • "First of all our waiter Neil was great, but the price and presentation of the food was bad. Your prices give the impression of fine dining but the result was an over priced Swiss Chalet presentation. Neil was awesome and made the experience better than it was but we were very disappointed in spending so much money on an experience that wasn't worth it."

  • "My wife & I were looking for a quiet, downtown restaurant with great food & service for our 27th wedding anniversary. My wife requested McKelvies. I reserved online & found this very easy & greatly appreciated the immediate e-mail confirmation. We had a quiet window seat - I did not request seating so this was perfect! The server was terrific. The food was terrific. We were impressed with how quickly such an excellent meal came. My wife started with the squash soup - she said it was the best she has ever had. We had never been to McKelvies before & we would return without hesitation. A wonderful experience! Thanks you."

  • "The atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable and the food was excellent. We had the special that night - roasted potatoes, asparagus and halibut topped with shrimp after starting with a honey crisp apple and golden beet salad. The entree was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. The salad was fresh and delicious. We appreciated the option of purchasing wine by the half litre. Nice selection too. We definitely plan to return."

  • "We're always assured of excellent food and good service at McKelvie's. The herb-crusted halibut on Friday night was delectable - McKelvie's has always been the place for good fish. Our server, Ryan, was helpful, polite without being obsequious, and turned down the lights when we asked him to. We sat in one of the raised sections, which I love - makes me feel "above the crowd"! It was quiet the night we were there, but is not always so - group gatherings there can be quite animated! My recommendation is this: if we have guests from out of town, McKelvie's is usually the first restaurant we suggest."

  • "The food seemed mass produced and low quality. We were very disappointed after hearing that this was a place to get local lobster. It was overcooked and poorly presented, even. Wish we would have gone somewhere else."

  • "Always been a long time fan for their fish, but haven't been in for a while. Was not disappointed - although busy we weren't rushed, and the food was excellent. Service was a little hit-and miss, without the attention to detail i would expect. But we had a great time"
