Diner Reviews
  • "First time at McEwens. The noise level was a bit loud ( front room) . Had the Sea Bass with mushroom Risotto. FAB!!!! Wine List ,suburb Noise level a bit loud but overall great experience"

  • "Our first visit to Memphis and we dined here our first evening. A great way to begin our visit! Four of us were dining and each meal was outstanding!"

  • "Having had friends come in from out of town, I wanted to give them a taste of fine Memphis cuisine in an environment that allowed them to truly enjoy their food and company. We chose to have dinner in their wine cellar and it was a great choice. The cellar proved to be secluded and perfect for a dinner party occasion.  I had the Grouper special of the day which was cooked very well in that it was not too dry, but rather flaky while at the same time tender. The cheese plate appetizer was excellent based on their choices of fine cheeses and accompaniments, and finally the mixed fruit cobbler was to die for. Service was impecable as we never had to ask for a refill and the knowledge of the menuwas superb."

  • "Heard about McEwen's from a friend that lives in Memphis. Advertised as excellent and that is the experience we had. Great service. Perhaps a slightly limited wine list. A splendid time was guaranteed for all and that night McEwen's was topping the bill."

  • "We had party of 5 - the food and service was as always - very good. Highly recommend."

  • "Making a reservation was worth it. Although it was a Wednesday night, the house was full. The food was amazing and it was seasoned to perfection. I had the braised pork with cheddar grits and spicy greens! It was well worth the price."

  • "McEwen's is small, friendly, comfortable, quiet enough for conversation -- perfect for two or more who want dinner and a chance to talk. I had pork osso buco -- not a common dish. I don't know where they got the pork but it was not the standard bland white pork of Nebraska superfarms. Nothing pretentious here but it's what too many Americans can only dream of in the chain-dominated hinterland. If I lived in Memphis I'd go often."

  • "We've been meaning to dine at McEwen's for some time now on one of our short stays in Memphis. Finally thought to get a reservation ahead of time, and we were not disappointed. The sweet potato encrusted catfish was fabulous, with sides of mac & cheese and greens. I'm not a mac & cheese person, but these were incredible and blended perfectly with spicy greens."

  • "The number of entree items was fairly small, but that's not a bad thing at all when every item is a solid choice. We will definitely be returning."

  • "We thought it would be a "normal" nice restaurant. But the menu was so different from any restaurant we'd ever been to. The options were unique--vanilla bean mashed sweet potatoes? YUM!! And the small plates were the perfect size for those who can't eat large restaurant portions. We would love to come back every time we're in Memphis!"

  • "McEwen's always serves a good meal and occasionally even at great meal. Their lamb is always delicious and there appetizers and salads are always good. They offer an adequate wine list and solid desert selections. On this trip I had the lamb sirloin which was perfectly prepared to my order. The wedge salad was standard fair but as good as any in town. The duck enchiladas, fried oysters and shrimp and grits were had by the table for appetizers and all were very good. It's not a quite or romantic setting and our table was loud so it wasn't an issue. The service and ambiance is nice though and commiserate with the food and price. The bar is always nice prior to seating and serves a good drink."

  • "I eat at McEwen's a lot. Havent had a bad meal yet! Everything was amazing. The lobster risotto, the beef tartare I wanted to inhale!! The wasabi mashed potatoes that came with the special (snapper) wasnt my fave, but that could just be a matter of taste."

  • "First time at this restaurant for everyone in the group and we all had an incredible experience. We come to Memphis numerous times for business and have tried many restaurants. The numerous appetizers and main courses we had were all top notch and served piping hot and fresh. Outstanding food for sure and we will be back."

  • "It was my first experience there. My wife and I choose to eat in the bar area. Atmosphere great, food was great. Service 'ok'. I was having trouble selecting an entree and didnt get much help from server in selecting. The duck was good but overpriced for what you get. My wifes chicken was excelent and she enjoyed it. The salmon appetizer was yummy like gravilax. I would go again and give it another shot on other dishes but my wife really loved the ashley chicken."

  • "We enjoy eating downtown and the location is very convenient to the Orpheum, FedEx Forum, and Beale Street. The atmosphere was comfortable and the food was very good. We especially enjoyed the special that night which was the tile fish. Service was friendly and well timed. We will definitely be back."

  • "McEwans is my favorite downtown Memphis restaurant , probably my favorite restaurant in all of Shelby county. This is my third time going and I have never been disappointed. My wife had the sea bass and it was cooked to perfection which has been a problem at other restaurants. I had the ribeye which was excellent. Asparagus was served with it and that also was cooked to perfection. Dessert, coffee, the wine, I couldn't have asked for better. My only complaint is that there is such limited seating that it is sometimes hard to get into, but well worth the effort when you do."

  • "Friend in from the west coast...we get a group together to visit on Saturday night. Great food, table was perfect. We may have bothered some of the other guests with our stories...sorry. Manager was great. The food was perfect and the wait person was very accomidateing. There was a party going on across the road. Manager saw us talking about it and gave us the low down on it. Just a great time. Osso bucco fantastic...steak/tuna tartar great...sea bass perfect. Wish they would bring the carrot cake french toast back ,but banana creme pie was good."

  • "This was a great dining experience. We are so glad we chose this place for our one Memphis meal! We had steaks which were wonderful. The salads were outstanding. I don't usually brag about a salad, but these were extraordinarily good. The service was excellent, the atmosphere perfect, and we loved our meal!"

  • "Our waitress was friendly and attentive. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere with compelling menu. The glass of Chardonnay I was brought was off--tasted not quite right. Despite the waitress' and my date's discussion of doneness, his filet mignon came out underdone. The manager was apologetic, and took it off our bill. At this price range, they really should have it together, though."

  • "I prefer sitting in a bar area for the energy, atmosphere, etc. McEwen's didn't disappoint and let us reserve a bar table. Staff was great (Brad I believe was waiter's name). Three of us ordered multiple apps and small plates for sharing. food was awesome, waiter very helpful re pretty extensive list of options. HIGHLY recommend."

  • "I entered my reservation a few days in advance with a request for a quiet, secluded seating for an anniversary meal. My call back the dy of said we would be seated by the fire place. When we got to the restaurant we were seated upstairs by the old fashioned gas heating unit. Right next to us was a table set for twelve. Alarm bells should have gone off then. When the party came in it was twelve energetic young ladies engaged in fairly loud conversation. The food was outstanding but I doubt we make the drive back downtown for hit or miss ambience."

  • "Had reservstions and arrived 15 minutes early and seated right away. All of our food ordered was good. We ordered the oysters for an appetizer, it was a small dish for $14. They were delicious but too pricey! The sweet potato catfish was phenomenal! My husband ordered the scallops which were good but he ended up eating my catfish with me. The collard greens on the side of the fish were way too spicy for either of us. Service was mediocre, good but nothing special for the price you pay. We will dine here again in the future."

  • "Given the Ballet Memphis moved it's regular performances from Downtown to Midtown, our chances to dine downtown usually sends us to trying new places. The recent performance of Shen Yun at the Cannon Center re-introduced us to an old friend. John and several other old faces were there to greet us like it was yesterday. The menu updated but still high quality and local in focus. Everything we had, the duck tenderloin, the salmon, the scallops, and the tagliatelle, we perfectly executed. I miss this place. I need to stop being a stranger."

  • "I decided that we would try McEwen's because we don't get downtown much, and was completely blown away. This place is AWESOME! We were greeted by our server, and she was extremely pleasant. She explained the nights specials and then gave us some time to view the wine list. We decided on a scallop appetizer, the wedge salad, my wife had the duck, and I had the nightly special which was grouper. The food was outstanding. The scallops were cooked to tender perfection, the wedge salad was a no brainer, the duck was succulent, and the grouper was superb. The mashed potatoes that came with the grouper were the best I think I've ever had. We will definitely be back, there was so much more on the menu that I want to try."

  • "We were worried that there wouldn't be enough on the menu for our kids, boys who prefer meat and potatoes,'but the small plate menu was perfect and the desserts were amazing. The whole family loved it!"

  • "I used to go there for lunch when I worked downtown, but hadn't been in years. I needed to make reservations somewhere close to the Orpheum before a show one night, but everything very close was booked. McKewen's is only about four blocks, and we definitely needed the walk afterwards -- the portions were quite generous. Everyone loved their meals, which included sea bass, pork osso bucco, and duck. I had one of the specials--grouper in a lemon cream sauce with horseradish mashed potatoes and green beans. The potatoes caught my attention and were the reason I chose the fish. This lemon sauce, however, is what I went berserk for. Everyone agreed the green beans were the best they'd ever had. I highly recommend McKewen's."
