Our waiter, Matt, helped my friend and me decide which would be best from each category to each of our individual likings, and he hit the jackpot with each dish. The service was impeccable, the wait staff was attentive and knowledge, and the ambience was incredible. The location is also perfect within downtown Charleston, and the historic house the restaurant is in is truly amazing. And most likely even more important than all of those things was that the food was AMAZING. Impeccable. One of the best meals I've head in my life, and I've dined at some of the finest restaurants in the world. As is my habit, we ordered from the fantastic 4 course Chef's Tasting Menu. Our server, Gina, was excellent. Service was attentive and course arrival was well timed. McCrady's staff makes diners feel welcome and you are never rushed. Standout menu items that night included the amazing raw pickled oysters presented as an "amuse bouche", the stone crab with popcorn miso, and Cobia with asparagus and wild beach herbs. We ate off the prix fixe menu and were thoroughly satisfied. Portions were smallish but with four courses no one left hungry. The Carolina calico scallops were absolutely delectable. Very extensive wine list with choices for every budget. The Tormentoso "Old Vine" Chenin Blanc we had with dinner was exquisite. Waitstaff were very attentive without hovering over you. Our waiter described every dish in detail as it was served. Most impressive. The restaurant was quiet and reserved, enabling dinner conversation without the need to shout. We ordered the tasting menu, 8 courses plus snacks for $110 per person. The servings were miniscule. 60% of the dishes were vegetarian, delicious, but not worth the cost. Several of the courses were not up to par. The Charleston Ice Cream, a fancy rice dish, was cleverly named, but it was rice--$110 for rice! The beat salad lacked texture and acid. The pork dish had good flavors but the meat was very tough. It wasn't overcooked, so I think it was just an inferior product. The dessert was unpleasant. The cake had the texture and flavor of whole wheat bread, and the sorbet tasted like they threw iced tea in a blender. The service is personable and professional. I was in recently for a first date and our waitress was perfect. She could sense the situation I think and was purposefully more hands off and respectful of our need to talk. (I think her name was Stephanie) Other times I've been and the staff is amazing. They care, they value the experience and they communicate. That makes the journey very pleasurable as well. If you are in town, you must pay McCrady's a visit. McCrady's is located off a main street down a short alley. The restuarant's interior has exposed bricks walls, two fireplaces, and very nice paintings on the walls. We were seated near one of the fireplaces. For your meal you can choose an eight course tasting menu, a four course menu, or an entre menu. We had the four course dinner. The dishes may seem small to others expecting a typical entre portions, however, with four courses it was prefect. Our waiter was very helpful pairing wines/drinks to the dishes.The service was prompt without being intrusive.
