A word from Mazza Luna
Fans of Hayes Valley favorite Mazzat can now welcome a new addition from owner Adam Chamsine, who's directed his penchant for Lebanese cuisine into a new project called Mazza Luna. The more upscale answer to Mazzat's family-friendly neighborhood vibe, Chamsine's new spot has a chic, loungy atmosphere and a focus on wine, beer and small plates.

Born in Lebanon and raised in Sweden, Chamsine makes use of family recipes in a dinner menu that features tapas such as fatet betnjan (fried eggplant topped with garlic yogurt sauce, pita croutons and pine nuts) and kibbeh (deep fried cracked wheat stuffed with ground beef and pine nuts, with garlic sauce). Hummus, babaganouge and falafel all appear on the small plates menu, which features nothing above $14. (See the full dinner menu here www.mazzaluna.com.)

Diner Reviews
  • "They scrimped on the Babaganoush.....it wasn't grilled eggplant as it should have been - clearly steamed - which sacrifices the flavor. Hummus was good, but the Lubi was overcooked. However, they do have an excellent selection of wines including Greek & Lebanese."

  • "The service and food were wonderful. Try the goat cheese stuffed dates!!"

  • "The food was amazing, very tasty! Three sets of appetizers were enough to fill us up but this place is super veggie-friendly which we loved! The server also recommended a wine which was quite good. They also let us stay past closing time and didn't try to rush us out of the place! Highly recommend this place."

  • "We ordered the special platter (the non-vegetarian version) and although we were starving when we sat down, we couldn't finish it. More than enough and everything was delicious. Combined with a $6 a glass wine (it was happy hour until 8) it was a great bargain. We ate before going to the Opera. It wasn't crowded, we go seated and served right away and it was a short walk to the Opera. We'll be back for sure!"

  • "Such a nice place! Pass by this restaurant every day, never paid attention. Thank you Open Table for these kind of discoveries. We were group of 8 and, even though the tables were designed for 6 people max, we were completely fine on the comfortable couches they have for groups. Lebanese food was great. I specifically liked pita bread pizza and wrap with veggies and lamb(forgot the actual names). Cheese plate, hummus, babaganoush were also delicious. They don't have full bar, but the wine and beer selection is good. Place looks chic and elegant and pretty affordable comparing to other restaurants."

  • "We were late to our reservation and we had an event to go to, they host was very nice and accommodated us. So we were able to order and eat within 30min. The food was good my favorite was the taboule and their appetizer with feva bean which I don't know what is called. Stuffed grape leaves was nothing special and seemed to coming from one of those canned one. The eggplant with yogurt was also very good. "

  • "We were slightly disappointed by the bland flavors and VERY slow pacing. We expected brighter spices in Mediterranean food. Our waiter apologized for the tardiness of our rather simple order and comped one entree, though, so their heart's in the right place."

  • "The wine flight was hit and miss, but honestly, most wine flights are. The food was also hit and miss but trying new things is always interesting. Not too crazy about the cheese plate that tasted like slightly hardened sour cream, but the meatballs were good, and the beef was delicious. My girlfriend ordered a salad (Shankleesh) that was good, but she didn't like the eggplant dish (fatet betnjan). The name of the cheese plate and the two meat dishes were too hard to remember, and their online menu is different than the menu we had in the restaurant, which we thought was odd. One thing we both really liked was the service, which was fast, friendly, and extremely helpful. We would both like to go back and try other plates."

  • "Limited, but interesting menu. Would recommend for happy hour, but not dinner. The Fatet Betnjan (eggplant with garlic sauce) was very good. The hummus with beef was not really substantial enough for an entree. Falafel and stuffed grape leaves were good. We arrived just before 6:00 PM on a Wednesday evening and were the only ones in the restaurant. The service was excellent, but am uncertain if that would be the case had the restaurant been busy. "

  • "Great food, responsive service. Only downside is that many of the tables are high, seating on stools."

  • "this is a lovely wine bar which serves levantine "appetizers" including "pizza" and wonderful pita and dips. It is a very good choice for pre-ballet/opera/sympony if you don't want to eat a lot (I so miss Calif Pizza Kitchen). they understand where you are going and when. My advice is to order the "pizza" since the other dishes although wonderful are meat flavored not really dinner fare. But a great addition to the neighborhood."

  • "The food was mediocre, kafta tasted like it was microwaved. Nice-looking place and good service, but the food was not good."

  • "Great food and service, but a little loud for conversation. We came with a larger group and ordered nearly half the menu Everything was very good and our service was excellent but the music playing in the background made conversation difficult."

  • "Mazza Luna is a welcome addition to the SF dining scene. It is conveniently located near the symphony, opera, and AMC 14 movie theater. We shared four dishes and each was better than the last. The staff is very welcoming and friendly, the service impeccable. This was our first time at Mazza Luna, but we will be back often."

  • "The hummus and felafel were not very good. The eggplant mosaka was good and so were the shrimp. It was very reasonably priced but I probably won't return."
