Diner Reviews
  • "We needed a quick but good dinner before going to theater at 8:00. I shared a Kale, etc. salad that was delicious and and the nightly vegetable plate that was outstanding. I'm not a vegetarian by any means, but wanted something light as we were going to sit for two hours at theater. It was absolutely the best vegey plate I've ever had! My husband had the hamburger with extra crispy fries. He didn't care if he ate light:) It was delicious. The waiter was delightful and made sure we got our drinks and dinner in a timely manner so we could get to theater on time. Personally we would rather have sat for awhile and enjoyed dinner and the ambience for longer. "

  • "still one of my favorite and most reliable places in Tucson. More varied menu than most."

  • "great meal but truly insipid service. appetizer came to table before bottle of wine. waiter did less then minimum needed. manager walked by table several times. Never stopped to check."

  • "This restaurant located in the midst of downtown Tucson turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. The food was outstanding. I had a roasted shank of lamb that was melt-in-your -mouth tender and superbly seasoned. My wife had a generously sized burger that was anything but ordinary. We enjoyed our meals so much that we look forward to going back to try other items on the menu. The service was also outstanding. The servers were courteous, pleasant, and always near by without being overbearing. The decor and ambience were both very nice. The place seemed a bit noisy at first since it is located in a train station but that faded into the background after awhile and was forgotten altogether."

  • "While the food was very good, the noise level made it difficult to talk to my partner right across the table. I asked for a window seat and was told we could have one, but when we (2 of us) arrived, we were told they were all reserved for parties of 4 instead of 2 even though there were 5 open window-side tables. After dinner when we left the restaurant, 2 of the original 5 tables were still open. This was disconcerting as I requested the window (as I have been to Maynards before) because I did not want to be shoved next to the small wall separating the restaurant and bar, which is exactly what happened.."

  • "Interesting ambiance. Old Train Station has an interesting flair. And trains... so if you sit outside trains will pass about 30feet from your table. If you prefer a more quiet ambiance, reserve a table inside. Inside is very nice and cozy. Outside tables are rustic as in old German beer garden (for those who have been to Munich). Wait staff is ok, but not on par with the food and kitchen. Food is great. Wait staff is hit and miss. Some are amateurs, others seem to be good at it."

  • "With so many new & interesting dining options available downtown, it's become more important than ever for restaurateurs to be on their game. Unfortunately, one of our favorite restaurants - Maynard's - seems to be resting on the laurels they deservedly won in their early years. Two members of our party ordered the fish special which they both described as being "okay". Three of us ordered Maynard's "eat with knife and fork" hamburger. All three burgers were overcooked, two were served with the wrong toppings (including a lump of cold bleu cheese) and none had the kind of taste that should have made them stand out. In the end, we may give Maynard's another try, but it's easily been surpassed as our go-to spot in downtown Tucson."

  • "It isn't only the French who can bring out the splendor of an old train station...go have a Sunday brunch in Maynards in Tucson with the song of the rails alongside. The station which trains are still servicing, has the candlelit elegance of yesteryear, with a restaurant menu which is nuanced and contemporary."

  • "ACES. Our server, Bob, was brilliant and painted a perfect picture of the fish, which I ordered. When he brought out the artesian cheese platter and oysters he reviewed exactly what we were going to try, including the goat cheese, half of which was from morning milkings and half from evening milkings! Okay, that's precision! Everything was a taste explosion! I even tried my first ever oyster! It was a culinary ride, from which I was not ready to disembark! The drinks, perfect. The presentation, flawless. The taste, decadent. Even the espresso, Cuban! The service, impeccable. Really, a wonderful night with great friends and perfection on our table, over and over again! What more could you ask for? Seconds I guess!read less"

  • "I thought I had experienced "all the best" of Tucson restaurants until I had dinner here. From start to finish; decor, ambience, plating, service, menu, food...it was all outstanding! Generous portions and incredible flavors...highly recommend!"

  • "The food was fabulous. We took our pastor and his wife to dinner prior to a show at the TCC. What a wonderful evening. The wine list was extensive with wide selection. The food was served in a timely manner that allowed for a relaxed evening. Would definitely go there again."

  • "Dined at Maynard's for the first time this week. Everything was excellent- service, ambiance, drinks, food, dessert- everything! I can't even think of something to criticize- it was all wonderful. Will definitely be returning, next time we are in Tucson!"

  • "Very fun and exciting dinner. Server was very attentive and did a great job at recommending dishes and conversing with us. Enjoyed a elaborate display of appetizers with a reasonably priced pinot noir from Oregon; a superb compliment with the poutine."

  • "A wonderful find in the Tucson food scene - interesting decor - reminenscent of a first class train dining car, complete with the train sounds and views in the background. White linen and dark wood, painted tin ceiling - absolutely charming. The food and drinks were outstanding. Inventive and creative cocktails, a solid wine list, and excellent food - the Poutine appetizer is not to be missed - great for sharing - and a fabulous re-creation with flavors and textures that work wonderfully. A nice variery of entrees, but the dessert selection is more limited, so go ahead and endulge on your main course."

  • "Maynard's has changed since last time we were there (which tells us we don't come often enough): it's French-inspired now rather than Southwest fusion. Still excellent, though. We enjoyed our meal and drinks, as we expected to. What was nicest, though, was the attention of the staff. Great food and personable-but-not-intrusive staff -- what more could we want? (We also liked being able to draw on the table-paper. ;-) Maynard's is one of our favorite places to take out-of-town guests."

  • "Great place. Cannot believe we waited this long to try it. A bit pricey so we will likely be back for c happy hour or another special occasion. The cheese plate was delicious. As was the steak and the lamb so tender. We did not have room for dessert and that says a lot as my husband always has a separate compartment for dessert."

  • "Contemporary French food - Great addition to Tucson food scene."

  • "- steak tartar was excellent - house manhattan was excellent - cassoulet was a bit salty - wine pour was a bit chintzy - service was slow for a guy dining alone but I give a pass on this as sometimes restaurants don't adjust their pace for the single diner who is just there to eat. I had to ask twice for the check which is unacceptable. All in all, I would give it another try."

  • "the atmosphere is very pleasant, the staff courteous and professional. the food was pretty good, not great, tho it was served beautifully. the server was a little less attentive than he should have been. one of our group waited a long time for a 2nd glass of wine and even had to order from the hostess as our server was nowhere to be seen. we had to ask a 2nd time to get it. a small thing, but noticeable."

  • "And it is! The oysters were spanking fresh, and everything was plated attractively. I had the cassoulet and my husband had the burger. I've never tasted saltier fries in my life. They looked like they'd been tossed in both fine and coarse salt. The burger was also quite salty and since the cheese we chose was Maytag blue, it was saltier still. The cassoulet looked fabulous. The duck was delicious and tender, but overall the flavor was a little flat as though it had been prepared several days ago and rewarmed. Service was very friendly. We aren't desert people, but after we had paid and were lingering over our wine, the server overheard it was my birthday and had a cheese plate prepared, which was very sweet."

  • "The food was truly excellent. I've eaten there a few times and this is always the case. The portions seem a little small for the price, but this fits with the gourmet experience. My only complaint is that twice now I have been chilly, so even though it is Tucson, it is a good idea to wear a sportscoat in winter months to this establishment."

  • "Four of us dined for brunch. Slow service in spite of the fact the restaurant was not busy. The old train station building and decor is first class, the food just okay. One burger was cooked properly, the other underdone. Decent mussels. A nice poached egg dish. No ice tea. We had to wait for it to be brewed. We liked the look of the market for a lunch spot better than the restaurant."

  • "We came for the Sunday brunch to celebrate our Anniversary and our experience was all that we could ask for. The service was exceptional and the food was prepared perfectly. We were able to relax and enjoy our experience. If we lived closer, we would become regulars."

  • "Since we never had been there and wanted to try it we went there for our anniversary. The service was fantastic, the ambiance was good but the food was just ok to fair, "nothing to write home about". The trout or fish was too dry, over cooked. The filet mignon my wife had was under cooked. She told them it was to be cooked medium rare and it was way to rare. It also was very tough. Obviously it was choice and not prime. I seriously doubt we would go back to Maynards. The filet mignon at the Arizona Inn and Jhonathons are much better, tastier and tender. thanks, r. david owen"

  • "Went here for Valentine's day. Got a call 30 minutes prior to my reservation letting me know that it was fixed price and selection. Given the day, what choice did I have. I expect to be gouged somewhat on holiday's, but the price for the quality of food was way out of bed. Will not be rushing back here anytime soon."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "The special menu for Valentines day was superb. I Was hungry though and I could have eaten three times the amount, but could not afford it at $70 a plate. I always enjoy Maynard's, especially for special occasions."

  • "A great restaurant! This was our third time and the food, service and ambiance was great! Our server was excellent at offering suggestions for both the wine and the appetizers. Great to for getting together with good friends or a romantic evening. And, if you are lucky, a train may pass by, which just adds to the mystic of the experience."

  • "Relying on Open Table to steer me to great spot (rather than Yelpers) found Maynard's. Nestled in restored train depot near downtown had a great experience. Wait staff attentive and had sense of humor. Food expertly prepared. Wine list interesting array of European selections with just a few West Coast stds thrown in for easy recognition. If you are adventurous plenty of unknown choices to try! Waiter was a helpful "travel guide""

  • "My wife and I dine fairly frequently at Maynards and have always been very happy with the food. In fact, we had an out of town guest with us and raved about the dining experience she should expect. The special fish for the evening was a Pacific Grouper that all 3 of us ordered. It came to the table considerably undercooked and inedible. Our waiter, Shawn, was very apologetic and immediately took the fish back to the kitchen. When it was returned, the fish was now overcooked and dry. We should have sent it back again but didn't. In fact, our guest did the right thing and instead of having her fish returned to be overcooked ordered a vegetable plate as a replacement."
