Many of the dishes draw inspiration from the wonderful fresh-baked breads produced right next door at our Bakery.   • "i wasn't able to give Mayfield the highest rating because of 1) excessive noise level and 2) uncomfortable seating for anyone not sitting in a booth. I think this would be easily dealt with; just invest in some better seating! The kitchen is creative, and the atmosphere is lively, but the noise level makes it next to impossible to talk with a person seated across from you. Having said that, I would gladly go again and it would become my go-to restaurant if I could know that these issues had been addressed. The bakery run by the same establishment, next door, is first rate, and the issues of seating and noise aren't material."

  • "The cauliflower soup and kale salad were outstanding. It was hard to get service. I finally had to ask the hostess to send a waiter to take our order. It was also so noisy it was a bit hard to hear my lunch companion at times. If there had been a table outside, it might have been easier to hear."

  • "My guests and I had lunch at 2:45 the other day, so the restaurant was very quiet. Our lunches included the burger, which was juicy and outstanding in taste and presentation. Likewise, the kale salad was delicious and a large portion. The avocado bacon club sandwich was tasty but a bit too greasy, as the rye bread was fried and too much oil (I assume) remained in the saturated bread. Overall, we were very pleased and will return again."

  • "Mayfield Bakery always has good food. I go often for both lunch and dinner, and here is my only quibble: while the dinner servers are excellent, the lunch servers just aren't. Not only the three of us, but also people around us had to practically jump up to get attention to ask for more water, more coffee, a spoon for the soup (why didn't it come with the soup?), etc."

  • "I've been to Mayfield several times for brunch, lunch and now dinner. The food is always good and the service is exceptional. During this dinner the soup of the day that my wife ordered wasn't fantastic. The server sensing that she wasn't completely happy insisted that she take away that bowl and bring out a different soup that my wife enjoyed."

  • "The food was pretty good, but we had higher expectations for the price. Everything was good, but the taste just lacked a certain wow factor. We ordered the french toast, chicken sandwich, and kid's pancake. The pancake was the most impressive. The ambiance was great. It was lively and noisy, but the booth also retained sense of privacy. Our 2 year old was able to somewhat crawl and sprawl in the booth. The mirrors were a nice touch so that the booth was private without being claustrophobic. Service was a little on the slow side, but they are very busy. Reservations are definitely recommended. Parking can be a bit difficult, but there are some nice walking about to do. We also got the free Madeleine cookies after asking for them."

  • "I really like Mayfield Cafe and have been frequenting it from its opening. I've also had them cater a birthday party for me. This most recent visit was no exception; my Pizza Bianca was just right, with tangy cheese, loads of fresh arugula and a to-die-for sourdough crust baked to chewy perfection. The problem was our server, who pretty much ignored us and only came to the table after we placed our order with the Manager. Our food was delivered promptly, but he vanished again until I flagged down another server to run our bill (after watching our server roam around leisurely for 8 mins). At lunch, you need prompt service which we didn't receive from this server. I won't let this keep me away but I was disappointed he wasn't better trained."

  • "I really enjoy the Mayfield, I have never been disappointed with anything ordered. On our last visit, it stayed true to form providing us with excellent apps, entree and dessert. The shaved fennel salad was amazing, the burger was very tasty and was cooked just right, the beignets got dessert were sweet light and yummy! This visit we sat on the window side of the restaurant and although the view was nice the restaurant was do loud we could hardly have a conversation without yelling it. It was a busy Wednesday night but a good time. The service staff was great and very attentive. I recommend Mayfield Bakery Cafe for great food, and a nice evening out."

I have tried different entrees and have not been disappointed; the food is delicious. The crowds can be rather lively, so it can be a challenge to hear when having a conversation with your guest."

  • "I hosted a couple small group meetings at Mayfield, one in the am, one in the pm. The food at Mayfield is always fantastic and the ambiance is charming. Our numbers were fluid (ie changing at the last minute), but the hostess handled it very nicely. We weren't the most difficult group, but some of the guests were ... picky. Waiters handled the needs/demands well. In the pm, I ordered two orders of cookies for the table, 2 large cookies each. It would be nice to have a "group" option of sweets for the pm. I was imagining (and thought they used to offer?) a plate of *small* cookies (or other dessert-y things). Also, the waiter brought three orders of cookies (huge). If I had asked I'm sure they would have changed the bill. A favorite place."

  • "There may be more expensive restaurants in Palo Alto, but there are no better than the Mayfield Cafe. Food and service are excellent in a relaxed setting. You can have an informal or fancy dinner. Food ranges from bar food to creative, with a great selection of wine or beer. Very friendly people. Worth making a regular stop in the area."

  • "We were looking for a good, but casual, brunch place near Stanford and found Mayfield on OpenTable. Great find!! Basically a very upscale version of a diner. Menu has a lot of choices and while even the basics have a twist, they are not weird like so many trendy new places in the Bay Area. This is a place to which I will definitely return. BTW, our waitress was great!!"

  • "I LOVE the menu and food, but if you want to have a conversation, sit outside. When the restaurant is full, you can barely hear the person who sits across from you. Be sure to make a reservation, even for lunch, as this is a very popular spot. I would definitely go again, but ask to sit outside. Oh, and fabulous bread. Take home a loaf from the bakery."

  • "The menu was limited and pricey in my opinion. I would like to see them add more items. When you pay $15 for a sandwich you expect something pretty spectacular. I ordered a smoked Salmon club that came with 2 pieces of bread not 3 as customary for a club. That said - I felt that the sandwich which was good should have had a small salad or something other than a heap if pickles. The largest issue was noise and the fact that the menu offered very few choices."

  • "This was my third time at Mayfield. First time I sat alone at the bar, during Stanford Student Admit Weekend, alone while my son was on campus. Very comfortable place to eat alone. Friendly bartender. The next time I was with my husband and two friends. Another great meal. This time I was with a group of 5. Great service. HAd the kale salad. Amazing even for non-kale likers. Had another version of the farroto (rissoto made with farro). The food is reliably great. Local, creatinve dishes. I expect to eat here every time I visit Palo Alto. It's just a comfortable, nice place."

  • "This was my second time coming here for brunch. The first time we sat at the bar. I think that's why I loved it last time ... This time, we sat at a booth and the service was not good and most of our food (two egg dishes) were cold. The food tasted okay, but nothing special. We ordered coffee and that was served in a very small cup and took forever to come. When it finally came, the waitress didn't bring us any type of milk for it and by the time she came back with it, 5 minutes later, the coffee was cold. She never offered to refill it - showed little to no interest in her job. Prices are too high considering the execution of the meals and the service. Wouldn't come back."

Finally returned and even though the food was very good , the seating was horrible (with a reservation) and the service was just screwed up, and slow. 2.5 hours for lunch. Do not go on a weekend. They can't manage the crowd."

  • "It was a last minute thought to eat here. There was a fixed menu for Valentine's day and a decent selection still. The prawns crostini with mushrooms was delicious and the filet mignon was good but not great (understandable due to the number of people they were trying to serve). Overall, it was a terrific experience and the flowers they were handing out were a very nice touch. I will come back to see what there menu is like during a normal occasion."

  • "Came for Valentine's dinner. Menu was prix fixed that night with a few choices each for starter, entrée, dessert. Everything was great, salad very fresh, cod entrée was cooked perfect and chocolate pot de crème was yummy for dessert.Service was great and our server made sure that we got everything we needed and more despite being a super busy evening. Tables bussed efficiently and our wine glass was always kept full!"

  • "To their credit - our reservation was honored, and our table was ready. So often these days, a reservation means you "only" wait for 15 minutes or more, instead of 45 minutes or more. However, having to choose "energetic" for noise level really irritates me; it should be "too loud." We were two couples, and were hoarse by the end of dinner. The pumpkin soup was delicious and served nice and hot; the kale salad was tasty but overdressed and soggy. The main courses were good to very good. Service was fine."
