Diner Reviews
  • "While the food at Maya is very good the tequila fueled din that accompanies it ruined our experience altogether. The staff is pleasant and found us a table away from the bar but unfortunately that space was quickly filled with the two large tables whose occupants had to speak and cackle quite loudly in order to be hear. If you do decide to brave the noise the margaritas, tacos alahambre, huitlacoche enchiladas and chocoflan were quite tasty. Will never, however, have them again."

  • "The quality of the food is good, the service is great, the ambiance is very noisy/ energetic. Since I lived in Mexico, I know the difference. That may very well be it."

  • "as always, a friendly greeting, great service and cuisine! Like the new additions to the menu!"

  • "Food and drinks were great! Place very noisy, but it was a Friday night. Would go back again...maybe on a weeknight."

  • "I must start off by saying I love Maya and Richard Sandavol! I have come to Maya many times and even had my favorite server (Michael!)and place to sit. The food is great, but the service and servers have changed. I felt rushed and it was not a lot of people in the restauarant at 11:30am ( one party of 6, a couple of parties of 2 and 3). Our server was nice, but was trying to get us to hurry and order, and she didn't want us to order another round of small plates or drinks. In fact, she suggested the pan de dulce as dessert to "wrap things up" and said she could go ahead and put the order in. We were only on our first round! Calm down and let people enjoy the food and drinks that they are paying for, please."

  • "Probably a function of summer in NYC, but they had flys buzzing around our lunches. Not very appetizing."

  • "I visit Maya every time I'm in NYC. This time was brunch. Absolutely incredible food...and lots of it...great drinks...and lots of `em and FINE service. 5 stars all the way!!!"

  • "Maya is so delicious and the brunch deal is hard to beat. Go for the chicken tamales. They are the best! !"

  • "Our daughter recommended this and near us - so we tried it out. Although service a tad slow the food made up for it.. Very good!"

  • "The restaurant is super loud. We were not even on the bar side and it was hard to hear the person across the table."

  • "The tamale sampler was a fun starter. I loved the corn one the best."

  • "I dined at Maya with a friend last week. We had reservations but we were early and they did accomodate and sat us right away; service all in all was good. The first thing we noticed was the after work crowd and the noise level; soooo loud!!! Had the food been exceptional we would have tolerated it; but it was 'meh'. Not the worst but certainly not the best with the exception if the guac which was quite tasty. The ceviche was okay but the carne assada was tough and tasteless. My friend enjoyed the tortilla soup but the enchiladas were average at best. The 'regular' margaritas were average and the chili mango margaritas way too spicy...it was all we could taste. We go to NYC annually but we we not go back to Maya...no love in tbe food!"

  • "Amazing food and service. Wonderful options for vegans and vegetarians."

  • "As much as I enjoy the food at Maya, it is not a pleasant dining experience. My shrimp special, recommended by our very charming waiter was delicious. However, the noise level is excruciating - a situation that could be easily fixed with some sound-proofing."

  • "Drinks too weak. Order wine or beer instead of cocktails."

  • "All you can eat AND drink for only ~$50 with tax and tip. The food is phenomenal and the drinks are even better. The all you can eat and drink menu is extensive with lots to choose if you are in a big group. Great for going for a special occasion and sharing family style. The restaurant itself is big and beautiful. One of the only places I will venture back to the UES for. The service was exceptional as well! Thanks for making my parent's anniversary celebration a hit!"

  • "We always love any excuse for an evening or lunchtime excursion to Maya. It is reliably excellent and the gourmet Mexican cuisine is also attractively presented. It is a cheerful place and everyone we have ever brought there has loved the experience -- and returned if they were "local"."

  • "The Sunday Brunch is well worth its cost and the food is outstanding. The menu provides many excellent Mexican choices and great drinks in the all inclusive. The one negative to the Brunch is the noise level...it is extremely loud at least in this visit. There were diners yelling and groups speaking very loud....to be expected when the Brunch is all you can drink within a 2 hour timeframe and specializes in tasty margaritas. It would be great if Maya modified their decor to include more sound absorbing fabrics...it would make the experience more enjoyable and would make the overall experience an Outstanding!"

  • "We went to Maya to celebrate two birthdays and it was a great time. Food and margaritas were great. We were not rushed out of there and would definitely go back again for any occassion. "

  • "Maya is my new favorite Mexican food place and my new favorite brunch spot! The food is so delicious and I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to Mexican food because im from California. Sooo good!!"

  • "Chef Sandoval continues to amaze with innovative twists on traditional Mexican cuisine. It is getting better and better and the crowds prove the success of the restaurant. We are fortunate to have it in walking distance to enjoy the excellent meals and service."

  • "Went here for lunch to celebrate my 40th Birthday with 3 other colleagues from work and didn't even receive a simple "Happy Birthday" from either the hostess or our waiter. Not only did I indicate it was my 40th Birthday on my Open Table reservation, but my colleagues even mentioned it twice to our waiter during our meal. No response. The restaurant was absolutely empty except for 2 other tables. When our waiter asked if wanted to start off with any drinks, we checked in on Yelp and asked to redeem the complimentary margarita offer. Our waiter said he "had to check on that" and then came back and said, "It's only 1 per table." The offer clearly stated 1 per person. Major fail. The food was decent but I won't be back. "

  • "For the prices, I expected these dishes to have more flavor. We ordered Gaucamole, and I have been to places where they make it right in front of you and its full of delicious flavor, at this place the Gauc tasted like something pre packaged. Nothing really tasted fresh. I hope this place kicks it up a notch with their cuisine. The place over all is a nice place. I give it a 9.5 for drinks, deserts, and service. "

  • "Sub par food, was told the rest of my guests were not here to realize after I ask to go to table after 5 minutes that all were seated already, server was friendly. Not what was expected."

  • "Went to Bottomless Brunch for Mother's Day with two 6 year olds and had a great meal/great time. Food was great, margaritas & mimosas were great, and the waiter was super attentive and nice. We didn't feel rushed at alll and he was really nice to the kids, trying to find something they might like (which turned out to be Mine Craft on the Ipads.) We left feeling full and happy!"

  • "As the title states, the food & drinks were crazy expensive. 6 drinks, guacamole, and 2 apps were ~150 including tip. The margaritas were good and not small and the food was tasty (but not amazing), service was good. The price isn't worth it to me to be back here for anything but happy hour. "

  • "I've eaten at Maya many times and always enjoyed it. Last night was different. The service was really slow, waited 30 mins for appetizer, entree was "OK"- cheese enchiladas were hard and had no flavor, AND it was so crowded and noisy we couldn't talk comfortably. Maybe it was just an off-night, but for the $$$ didn't think it was worth it."

  • "Great staff and food!! Choice this restaurant to surprise my boss for her birthday, original fewer people then called to pump it up to a group of 6 and they didn't make it an issue. While waiting for the rest to come in, they were all so attentive! They let us decorate our table, even took the cake we brought in and stored it for later. We were the last ones out that night and didn't feel rushed or nagged on for staying later. Overall great experience here! Will be coming back and recommending! PS MARGARITAS WERE AMAZING!! Sunday is Happy Hour all DAY!! "

  • "Went here with my wife for anniversary. Ate at Tamayo in Denver last year, didn't even compare. Slow service and quality."

  • "I realize judging a restaurant on a Saturday night at 8:00PM might be a bit harsh but honesty prevails. Our group of six ordered a four appetizers and only two arrived before our entrees appeared. We gently complained but our server appeared harried and not only confused but helpless. Fortunately, the manager was kind enough to comp the appetizers and dessert but overall, we were slightly disappointed; the food had been better in the past. My brisket tacos lacked flavor and the meat was tough while my wife's enchiladas were just acceptable. Maybe, perhaps, we'll give Maya's another opportunity to impress."

  • "The food here is wonderful, and so is the thoughtful service. Definitely not a place to converse over dinner, though. The noise level is ear-splitting."

  • "This place was legit. Did not mind spending the money for an awesome dinner. You need to eat here. "

  • "Service was good but the noise was very loud - we could hardly converse - and the food was not what we had expected; ok but nothing to go back for"

  • "It was a surprise dinner for the bday girl! They let our group be seated even though only a few of us were there. I booked on open table and requested dessert with a candle for my girlfriend. The staff was great! At the end of the meal, they brought out a birthday dessert and I didn't even have to ask again. It was perfect. Our waiter was very accommodating to our meal requests as well. Needless to say, some of my friends had very specific needs. Thanks so much Maya! "
