Diner Reviews
  • "Our group of 3 had a wonderful Tuesday night dinner on the outside patio. Service and Food were excellent."

  • "Went for brunch on Sunday with 4 friends. We all enjoyed great drinks (mimosas) and Latin spins on traditional brunch offerings. I will definitely be back!"

  • "I've been here before and I found a deal on Living Social to try their new brunch menu for Sundays. I ordered the wild mushroom and kale crepes with roasted poblano salsa and they were delicious. They came with a side of green grapes and herbed red potatoes. I had a mango mimosa and a strawberry. They used fresh strawberries for the mimosa and that was my favorite. My husband ordered the jibarito with Allen Brothers steak on it-and the meat was amazing-wonderful flavor. We really enjoyed eating outside on the patio and the waitress gave excellent service. The ambiance was nice and there was Spanish rock type music playing the whole time. I will definitely be back."

  • "Went prior to a concert and we let the waitress know that we were attending a concert - she was very good about getting our food fast. We sat on the patio and the weather was awesome. The food was delicious. I would recommend this restaurant!"

  • "Best restaurant in town! Terrific food, great service, friendly staff. Chef Mario is very attentive to guests."

  • "Visited for the first time and went for brunch, food was served as described. Portions were great and flavors were spot on. Various friends have recommended, will return soon for dinner."

  • "After reading reviews, we were very disappointed in the food at May Street. Husband's Lechon Asado was bland, overcooked, and looked terrible: grey pork chunks swimming in watery liquid. My meal was pretty, but $20 for a half pineapple stuffed with Spanish rice, 3 overcooked shrimp and a few small cubes of fishy-tasting scallops is ridiculous. The cocktails were good. The guacamole delicious, but that is a given at any restaurant: I am no cook, but even I can make a great guacamole. We ate on the deck which is lovely, but we were the only ones there on a Wednesday night. We ended up watching TV with the waitress and bartender/busperson. A huge disappointment for us. It seems we have missed the prime of May Street Cafe."

  • "My date and I picked up a LivingSocial deal and headed to the May St. Cafe for a wonderful brunch. There's outdoor seating under an awning and the food was fantastic. Definitely recommend."

  • "This place was wonderful! First off the margaritas were amazing! I had the special watermelon and the jalapeño cilantro. Secondly, the server was nice! It was the best service we have had in a while. My only complaint as a tourist is how far it is from the l stop and Chicago! It was not the best neighborhood. I would recommend a cab or driving ."

  • "Patio is wonderful, prix fix options are so summer-y, everything made fresh based on your order, staff is always so friendly. Most unique view I've ever had for a restaurant!"

  • "Best guava margarita I've ever had. Loved the quesadilla with Brie and pear. Great service sweet outdoor space. Enjoyed the salmon in mole!"

  • "Overall the food at may st cafe is very good to outstanding, however it seems that the preparation on some dishes are more reserved than others if not lacking imagination. For example the queso appetizer with cheese and vegetables has few vegetables and are cut very small so all you really get is the cheese. It is still good but it seems that more vegetables would really go a long way. The ceviche only has talapia as opposed to a variety of seafoods. We did not order the ceviche based on its simplicity but i bet that if it were prepared with the same attention as many of the other dishes it would be spectacular. The food here is great and you cannot go wrong but i think that they can go a small step further."

  • "Outstanding margaritas! Food was delicious, and clearly freshly prepared. Nothing was your typical Mexican or South American fare. Definitely recommend Abuela Ina's Chicken Con Mole and the Lechon Asado. There was a private party on the patio or we would have enjoyed outdoor dining. Complete surprise given the surroundings - give them a try! "

  • "We were able to get a same day Saturday evening reservation so weren't sure what to expect and ended up being extremely pleased with every aspect of the restaurant. The outdoor seating area was very comfortable, the menu was interesting and the staff was fantastic. The Executive Chef stopped by and was very enjoyable to talk to. This is a diamond in the rough in the Pilsen neighborhood. This can easily become our "go-to" restaurant in the city."

  • "Great food carefully prepared by Chef Mario Santiago, who checks in with diners and has a megawatt smile and personality. Nice selections and friendly service keeps regulars coming back. Great outdoor patio. "

  • "Started with guacamole, which was outstanding. Had Caesar and chef's salads, which were very fresh and flavorful. Wild salmon with chipotle sauce and la pina de la playa both excellent. Chocolate lava cake and white chocolate flan were perfect ending. Open windows and doors gave it an outdoor feel without sun beating down. Got there early for dinner on Saturday evening, and service and ambience were fine. Would like to try a later seating to compare."

  • "I looked at the menu before going. I checked out the location before going. Both were good, but different. Menu with Latin and steaks. Location kind of between Chinatown and ?? I said to my wife let's try it. I'm very glad we did. I had a jalapeno margarita and later I had a house margarita. Both were good. I had paella and my wife had steak. Mine was very good - piping hot and flavored mildly - just right. The NY strip was seasoned nicely. We agreed we would try it again."

  • "We had a 7pm Saturday dinner, and the food was excellent - great flavor combinations, great texture, and wonderful presentation. However, the servers seemed to not be communicating, and we were asked many questions 2 or 3 times, each by different servers. Our food took longer than expected, and they offered us dessert on the house, which was excellent, even though we both hate coconut. This was our 2nd visit here, the first was several years ago. We'll likely be back some time."

  • "May St Cafe is a hidden away gem in an unusual industrial neighborhood. The latin based fare is excellent and the service attentive. Whether you are interested in meats, veggies or seafood, the dishes were fresh, well prepared and delicious. I also highly recommend the cocktails and wine selections. The freshly made mojitos came in a variety of flavors and were excellent."

  • "Came across this restaurant on OpenTable and thought we'd give it a shot because of the reviews and to be honest, the 1,000 points. But, so glad that we tried it as everything was just great from the music playing to the very attentive service. They have figured out how to apply a contemporary twist to some staple dishes. The empanadas had a flavorful filling while encased in a flaky shell. The house margarita was awesome as were our main dishes. We'll be back, count on it. "

  • "Was referred here by an acquaintance. Atmosphere was relaxing and intimate. Service was stellar! Extensive list of beer, wine, and cocktails. Best margaritas EVER. Everything we ordered was delicious, especially the guacamole! Chef Mario has definitely mastered the art of creating new and exciting dishes you won't find elsewhere. His warmth and smile fill the dining room as he personally greets each guest. Don't miss out on this hidden gem! "

  • "I wanted to take my wife out and decided against going downtown. I found this place on the internet and decided to give it a shot. The restaurant was small and dimly lit. I must admit, there might need to a bit more lighting, but then again, I have old eyes. :) The service is awesome, our waitress was helpful and very, very kind. When the food arrived, it was fantastic. I place to go back - and - I will try to make this place a regular destination."

  • "My husband & I met another couple for Easter brunch at May Street Cafe. We each brought along our kids -- one 18-months & one 8-months. None of us had eaten there before, so we did not know what to expect, especially on a holiday. But what a wonderful place! Our server was so friendly & very knowledgeable about the food. The exec chef checked on us a few times & chatted with the kids. The bus staff was so available and smiley, they all took such good care of our table. We felt like guests in someone's home, even though the place was busy, and it was a holiday morning. The food was outstanding. We all had the Easter buffet, but each dish tasted cooked to order. We cannot wait to return, again and again. Thanks May Street Cafe!"

  • "I have been hearing about this restaurant for years and was finally able to get there. The service, first and foremost, was impeccable!! The hostess was kind and gracious and did everything in the world to make us feel at ease. While my hamburger was a little salty, it was delicious and the portion size was HUGE!!! The jalapeno and cilantro Margarita was not overly sweet and was refreshing and different from the standard fare. The room is intimate and it feels like you are in someone's home. It was a wonderful evening and I am planning to return when the weather is warmer and I will be able to enjoy eating outside."

  • "My wife and I have been going to May St. Cafe for years. We have seen it grow from a terrific neighborhood place to a fine dining destination. The flavors of the food are unique, original and always delicious. There is nothing on the menu I do not like. I really like dark moles and the chi;c;ken with mole is fantastic, rich and complex. My wife specially likes the butternut squash soup if it is on the menu you must try it. We come to May St. whenever we have the time for a night out and are never disappointed."

  • "My wife and I very much enjoyed our visit to the May Street Cafe. The guacamole was fresh and delicious, and the Mexican burgers were outstanding. They were huge and very tasty. We will look to come back, though we don't live anywhere near the restaurant. My wife was coming back to town, having arrived at Midway Airport."

  • "From the moment we walked in, our server greeted and sat us while saying "Welcome Home." We were impressed immediately by the friendly and attentive staff. The drinks we had were delicious. I strongly suggest the jalapeño cilantro margarita. EVERY single food item we had was amazing! I had the Pollo con Mole and I am still thinking about it the next day! It's very rare that I find cooking that reminds me of my childhood and my mom. May St. Cafe was definitely like being "home" and I can't wait to go back!"
