Diner Reviews
  • "Our second time at May Kitchen surpassed our first. The food and presentation: perfect! The service: intelligent, warm, friendly, efficient! The ambiance: beautiful, serene, compelling. We dined with our son and daughter-in-law who travel widely and who simply raved at every dish, the delicious cocktails, and the Island-produced Cabernet. Best Thai food they've ever had - anywhere in the world! May Kitchen continues to be the most amazing and gratifying culinary and restaurant experience in the region. SUPERB!"

  • "From the warm and fascinating interior (wooden walls and fabric hangings imported from Thailand) to the attentive and helpful staff, May's provides a great foundation to their true treasure: the food. We went all out, having three different appetizers, three entrees and two desserts between the four of us. Each one was unique and delicious in their own way, although we all had favorites by the end of the meal. I particularly appreciated how the less-spicy dishes were still full flavor. I'm very pleased to have another fabulous place to go out for dinner."

  • "You don't have to go to Seattle for outstanding Thai food. It's authentic and delicious---the menu changes seasonally and the waiters are well versed on the menu. I go there as often as I can."

  • "The food is excellent - flavor, freshness, presentation. It reminded me of the food prepared for us in Thailand. The setting is cozy and the staff pleasant and attentive. I definitely recommend with two thumbs up."

  • "Service was attentive and friendly without being intrusive. Food carefully prepared, delicious, artistic presentation. This is definitely Thai with a difference. May's is very popular, so it was crowded and busy, but a good friend and I were able to carry on a personal conversation, though noise and close table placement felt like a bit of an issue."

  • "The staff at May do it right--from smooth reservations to last-minute accommodation, from family style to date at the bar to takeout. The flavors and presentation are fabulous. Lots of care taken. Huge variety of flavors--get help with the menu if you have strong preferences. There is no star system, but the menu highlights what is spicy and what is not spicy, and you can always add heat. Those who can't eat wheat or dairy find they can have almost everything on the menu. Even some fun, creative cocktails (which can up the price of your meal considerably--beware!). Really, a great resource for lots of dining-out contexts. Can't say enough good things!"

  • "This is Vashon Island's best-kept secret. It doesn't even have a sign; look for the elephants on the roof. The staff is great, attentive and very friendly. Pay attention to the "Spicy" note on some dishes. Our server said the owner believes dishes should be prepared as they are in Thailand: some are spicy and some are not. May Kitchen is true to the Thai tradition. That said, my daughter who adores spicy!!! food loved everything. The less heat-tolerant in our group stuck to milder choices and raved about them. I highly recommend eating family style here. Everyone will want to taste everything. Also, when you are asked, get the red rice."

  • "A great place to take visiting guests; friends always ask if you have included a meal there. The fresh spring rolls and the watercress appetizers are worth repeating anytime. There are special, and tasty cocktails for those who want something different from wine. The wait staff are excellent in explaining the dishes, and they do have ones that are not spicy. The red rice is a must as well."

  • "Definitely a family place, with Mom in the back and built--literally--by the owner May. Not the spiciest Thai food I've gotten, even when ordered 'pet pet' or Thai spicy, but delightful deep and subtle flavors with lots of layers and depth. Also refreshingly clean and fresh throughout. The service was friendly, very on spot and quite fun."

  • "One of the best Thai restaurants I've eaten at. Definitely the best restaurant on Vashon."

  • "As is typical for Vashon, it was an uneven experience. Good food (have had better here before) and a vibrant energy about the place. I had a dish with pork in it. I felt like it was a bit dried out. The deep fried watercress appetizer with a dipping sauce was unusual and very good. We had an 8 pm reservation, but had to wait 15 minutes for a table. We had to wait a long time to order drinks, but then the service picked up. Overall, nothing stood out as exemplary (except the appetizer), but it was a nice dinner."

  • "Mays Kitchen on Vashon is my go to place to eat. I've always loved Thai food. But this is inspired Thai food, sophisticated and innovative. Above all, the warm welcome and kindness shown by the staff means a lot to me."

  • "Vashon is certainly lucky to have someone like May open up a place here. Service is friendly and attentive, and the food is excellent. Recommend reservations, unless you hit the restaurant early, as they have limited hours and are quite popular on the island."

  • "I just love this place. Food is always delicious, drinks are awesome & such a cool atmosphere. Staff is always smiling and attentive. Nothing else like it on the island. Highly recommend it!!"

  • "This island restaurant takes you further than any ferry ride. The ambiance brings you to a different world of culture, smells, and flavors unseen anywhere else on Vashon. The food itself, as always, was delicious and served with precision. Accommodating for any palate and the perfect destination for any occasion!"

  • "The food is superb and a delight to the senses. Walking into the restaurant is like going into another world and you feel as though you have been transported to Thailand. The graciousness of the staff wraps you in their warmth. Always a special dining experience."

  • "Mays never disappoints. Thursday a special was one of my favorites: deep fried whole trout with mango chili sauce. Cannot be beat! That and fresh rolls and a glass of Lone Canary and I was so happy. Lucas at the bar and the warm welcome were perfect."

  • "The ambiance was warm and comfortable, interesting & elegant without being too formal. The service was superb -- we especially loved our waitress, Hillary. The dishes came at good intervals -- we were never sitting too long, but also had plenty of time to finish our current dish without the next one crowding our table. The Tom Kah soup was creamy without being too thick, with subtleties of flavor. The Yum Phak Boong was fun and flavorful, a nice contrast to the soup. The Gaeng Faak Thong was delicious, rich and creamy, with a variety of textures and flavors. We ran out of room for dessert, so are already planning to come back on another day when we can plan ahead and skip lunch!"

  • "Great spring rolls. The trout was presented whole and standing up, kinda weird, too vinegary. It was not as good as the tilapia that was served as a special a few months ago. I would not order the trout again. The other meals were lacking in the meat department, very skimpy. Would like to see more green veggies. Rice is not included in the meal, extra charge. The service was very friendly and helpful."

  • "OK, it sounds lame to rave about a Thai restaurant and to recommend the phad thai. It's presentation is like no phad thai you have eaten, To give you specifics would ruin the surprise. The local Eclipse Red Blend by the local Palouse Winery was superb. This place has fantastic ambiance, old reclaimed teak wood imported from Thailand adorn the walls. And the service was spectacular. Oh...order some of the spring rolls. The sauce is phenomenal. We will be taking the ferry back to Vashon JUST to go to May's. Look for the elephants, the restaurant does not have a sign (which makes it even that much more cool)."

  • "May Kitchen and Bar is one of those rare restaurants where you leave feeling like you had not only great food but an amazing experience. The attention to the detail of a Thai eating experience transports you to Bangkok. The restaurant has been beautifully decorated with genuine Thai decor, including the solid wood paneling on the walls from Thailand. The staff are attentive without being intrusive and are friendly and engaging. And the food is truly amazing! The best Thai food I have ever had. I would recommend May Kitchen to anyone looking for a quick get away for the evening on Vashon Island-definitely worth the ferry ride!"

  • "Walking through the doors at May Kitchen is like entering another world. It's richly hued, full of good smells, beautifully adorned, warm and intimate. And the food matches this beauty. Our dishes were rich, creative, delicious and beautifully presented. The servers were wonderful, from the nice man who took our order to the handsome guy who served us. We were all charmed and pleased and left happily sated. All in all, just a great experience. Thank you."

Truth is none of them have! We will keep visiting May's because we think it is the best restaurant on Vashon."
