Diner Reviews
  • "Had the falafel sandwich and enjoyed it. Great wine list!"

  • "That's what they say is their specialty, and they do mean it. This last visit was the first time I've done their weekend brunch, and it was just as scrumptious as their dinner menu. I had the Pan Barracho y Huevos Locos - there aren't enough words to do it justice. While it is first and foremost a wine seller when it comes to their beverage selection, I decided to have the Man-Mosa with my brunch (microbrew wheat beer with orange juice), and it certainly hit the spot on a toasty summer day. Can't recommend this place enough."

  • "I've been coming here several years now, and I have to say, the experience has gone from "WOW!" and "Taste explosion!!" to "Well that was underwhelming" or "That meal didn't deserve that cost." Something started happening around January that has really just tumbled downhill. I am sad to write this... Has to be said."

  • "This was our first time at Max's. We had heard about the fried chicken brunch and it was great! We also tried the specialty of the day drink which was roasted jalapeno pineapple juice with Prosecco !"

  • "This was our second time at MAX's and we chose to bring an out of town guest. The restaurant has just introduced their summer menu which is incredible. In our little group we had wine lovers, beer lovers, carnivores and a vegetarian. The menu had something for everyone and we all left feeling as if we'd eaten too much but loved every bite."

  • "Food is great. Service is awesome. Chris really knows his wines"

  • "I had the gluten-free fried chicken with mashed potatoes and collard greens. It was great!"
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "We love Max's in the evening and decided to try Sunday brunch. The menu was great, and the wine specials where good too. Waffles and fried chicken wings and the fried egg sandwich were delicious. The sparkling wines specials that come with complementary juice, so you can mix your own mimosas at the table is win-win. Lots of customers dressed way down (men in sleeveless T-shirts/tank tops with lots of hairy parts hanging out) and floors and furniture that looked like they could use a good scrubbing definitely keeps the "dive" alive in the MAX's Wine Dive. Not sure that's a good thing, but the fried chicken and champagne will keep me coming back."

  • "Our server was awesome. She was able to help us make wine choices and brought us enough tasters that the newbies at the table could be confident in their choices. The food was good, although my salad had an unfortunate amount of rotting greens in it. The chicken was great, as usual, but the collards didn't get rave reviews. The calamari was great and splits really well. The apple brulee was good enough, but I would probably get something different next time."

  • "We were in SA for an extra night and found Max's on the app. We LOVED the GF fried chicken, wine and service! It was the first time I have had fried chicken in a couple of years!"

  • "We go back over and over again and we are never disappointed! The food always has that something special that satisfies the stomach and the mind at once! The wine is outstanding and the service is perfect!"
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "The atmosphere was warm and the fried chicken was delicious. Great live music. The biggest downfall in my humble opinion was there was no draft beer, extensive wine list though !!!"
    Dined on 6/9/2014
  • "From the incredible service, to the amazing food and a top shelf wine list, Max's Wine Dive is a must!"

  • "Food was excellent, seemed a bit noisy but not too bad. Great price! I recommend the chicken and waffles. The only negative that I have is there was not much of a kids selection, there were only 3 items. Great experience overall, spent less than $60 for a family of 5."

  • "We eat here pretty regularly and I usually love it but this time the salad I had was disappointing because it had a very strong fennel-anise flavor which I didn't expect and don't like. But my husband 's burger was good and the wine was great as always. "

  • "As soon as I drove by this place I was immediately drawn to the word WINE in bold letters and with dive bar below it I assumed it would be a great spot. The place pretty busy and all the workers seemed very friendly. Low lights and wine cellar atmosphere very cool with great music. The wine selection was great and the staff seemed very knowledgable of wine. The only con to this restaurant in my opinion is the lack of CHEESE plate options, I mean I know its a late night dive bar but theres always time for wine and cheese ALWAYS. Oh and its not vegetarian friendly your options are very limited. Salad, Mac n Cheese, Avacado Hummus, and Quinoa Poblano are your only options..... If your Vegan .... eat before you come here. Enjoy!"

  • "Eggs on toast with Gruyere and truffle. What more can I say? Migas. Hangover hash. Specials on champagne. "
    Dined on 5/18/2014
  • "Food was over-salted & glass of wine overpriced! When over-salted appetizer was sent back to kitchen a new serving was not offered...wine served by the glass contained barely any wine!"
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "I have been to Max's for brunch and have always loved it. I took a client there for dinner and my bison sliders were dry and tasted like a drive through burger. They were not worth $11. It was so noisy due to the music being cranked up that I could barely hear what was being said. I will not be going back."

  • "Not fancy or amazing, but they are good at what they offer and it's all good "

  • "The food here is really good we have never had anything that we didn't enjoy. The various forms of fried chicken are some of the best anywhere. At the table next to us, 2 pieces were undercooked. The waitperson immediate took them back no questions asked ; just an apology. The chicken is cooked to order and takes a while so the patron was pretty much done before the corrected pieces were brought out but they were cooked perfectly and the table was happy. The staff is great. The only issue is parking because the entire area fills up fast. I do recommend getting a reservation (open table works great) because the place fills up just about as fast as the parking in the center."

  • "I'm only in San Antonio for a short while but Max's has become a staple for my Sunday afternoon brunch! There chicken and waffles are life changing...the atmosphere is hip and I always have a great experience!"

  • "The food was awesome and I loved the fried chicken/waffles. Also the fried egg sand which was great! The drinks were great. I tired the jalapeño max drink, it tasted horrible, but a funny experience. Most of all I love the music. U don't get to hear classic rock and blue anywhere. Much less for breakfast!"

  • "We are never disappointed with Max's! We come for dinner, lunch, and brunch is our favorite. We were seated right next to another couple but my husband felt a little too close. They moved us to a more private table and had another wonderful night! This time we ordered the short ribs, Barbacoa masa cakes, fried chicken and the half and half for desert. All were amazing!!!!!"

  • "Waitress was awesome, bringing us samples of wine to try since we aren't very knowledgeable about wine.. She was well trained not just on wine but how well each went with our food selections. And the food was great. "Max" and cheese was awesome, had avocado hummus I loved. My dining partner kept wanting it to taste like guacamole, so couldn't wrap her head around it. But that was her problem! She had the fried chicken and I had the redfish. Everything was excellent. A little noisy, and I understand they have live music sometimes and that would be very loud considering how small it is. Definitely not a typical restaurant, but a great wine dive where you can get great food as well.. Can't wait to try weekend brunch."

  • "Our group was a group of 6 and we were well attended to. I will give the service plenty of credit because we were never in want of anything. When it comes to the food, I'm of two minds. The small plates that we ordered were pretty good. The portions were fairly small, but they had excellent flavor. When it came to the big dishes, I thought it faltered a bit. I had the hamburger and it was more to the dry side than I would've liked, I ordered for it to be done medium. The burger also fell apart easily and became a bit of a mess. Everyone else's dish looked fairly decent, though I did not actually try them. However, I wasn't "wowed" by them. In essence, I expected more. However, the wine and music were great."

  • "I've eaten before at Max's and the food has been great. This time the fried chicken was a bit greasier than last time. The rest of the food was up to par. Thanks."

  • "Have been to Max's many times and it is still a favorite - not only for a light bite and a glass of wine to a more complete dinner. Enjoy the casual and energetic atmosphere. Not necessarily the best place for a business dinner due to noise level. Wine selections are fun and diverse and the changes with the seasonal menu give you something to look forward to with each visit. Some outstanding classic menu items for me are the chicken sliders with the chipotle honey and the shrimp and grits. Have always had good service, favorite server is Daniel. Looking forward to next visit!"

  • "The food was great and our server made some wonderful recommendations, that we ordered, and we were not disappointed. We shared the pork-stuffed chiles (awesome) and had the shrimp and grits (which had a great, spicy kick) and my husband ordered the burger. This is a great, adult place."

  • "Great spot for foodies! My wife and I enjoyed the food, the wait staff, and the music. Amanda, management, was very friendly and made our evening memorable. Thank you all for a great time."

  • "I had already eaten and just stopped in for dessert. I was excited about the Cookie Butter pudding - but oops - they blew it making it with cream cheese?? Not only is it too bitter for the butter - it did not make the batter better - so for a bit of better butter - try using a lighter cream with peanut butter or banana. Too heavy, too rich, but great idea."

  • "Enjoyed the fried chicken and the caesar salad very much! Kids menu was pretty much non-existent. I wasn't thrilled about buying waffles for my kid for lunch at 1:30."

  • "We've been to Max's several times and have a good feel for the place. We've sat along the narrow bar and at tables. This is a lively, fun, but not boisterous place. The menu rotates periodically and always has good offerings. Staff are always friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and have consistently guided us to good choices. Wine samples offered to help cement your choice. The ONLY negative here is the severely limited parking. Bypass the lot, park in the garage, and walk a couple minutes. It's worth it! Overall: VERY GOOD."

  • "Max's was an excellent choice for a special night out. There were many wines to choose from, and the food was incredible. The service we recieved was also top notch. We had a fantastic experience and will be recommending it to everyone we know."

  • "My wife and I had Valentines day dinner and staretd with a couple of appetizer's. The fries and Oyster nachos were great, went good with the bottle of white wine we ordered. For our main dish I had the balckened red fish with a side of brussel sprouts. There is a difference between burning and blackening. (My food was burnt). We brought it up to the waiter and he said they were supposed to be that way (I dont think so but ok). My wife decided to order the scallops and brussel sprouts. She was disappointed when she saw she only got three scallops for 25.00. Those were good, but overpriced and her brussell sprouts were not burned."

  • "Good food and good service. You definitely need a reservation for brunch; the place is packed! Not a place for a quiet meal or conversation. Even though the menu warns that it takes the kitchen extra time to prepare the fried chicken dishes, we found 45 minutes a bit too long. That said, we've been here before, and we'll be back."
