Diner Reviews
  • "Not fancy or amazing, but they are good at what they offer and it's all good "

  • "The food here is really good we have never had anything that we didn't enjoy. The various forms of fried chicken are some of the best anywhere. At the table next to us, 2 pieces were undercooked. The waitperson immediate took them back no questions asked ; just an apology. The chicken is cooked to order and takes a while so the patron was pretty much done before the corrected pieces were brought out but they were cooked perfectly and the table was happy. The staff is great. The only issue is parking because the entire area fills up fast. I do recommend getting a reservation (open table works great) because the place fills up just about as fast as the parking in the center."

  • "I'm only in San Antonio for a short while but Max's has become a staple for my Sunday afternoon brunch! There chicken and waffles are life changing...the atmosphere is hip and I always have a great experience!"

  • "The food was awesome and I loved the fried chicken/waffles. Also the fried egg sand which was great! The drinks were great. I tired the jalapeño max drink, it tasted horrible, but a funny experience. Most of all I love the music. U don't get to hear classic rock and blue anywhere. Much less for breakfast!"

  • "We are never disappointed with Max's! We come for dinner, lunch, and brunch is our favorite. We were seated right next to another couple but my husband felt a little too close. They moved us to a more private table and had another wonderful night! This time we ordered the short ribs, Barbacoa masa cakes, fried chicken and the half and half for desert. All were amazing!!!!!"

  • "Waitress was awesome, bringing us samples of wine to try since we aren't very knowledgeable about wine.. She was well trained not just on wine but how well each went with our food selections. And the food was great. "Max" and cheese was awesome, had avocado hummus I loved. My dining partner kept wanting it to taste like guacamole, so couldn't wrap her head around it. But that was her problem! She had the fried chicken and I had the redfish. Everything was excellent. A little noisy, and I understand they have live music sometimes and that would be very loud considering how small it is. Definitely not a typical restaurant, but a great wine dive where you can get great food as well.. Can't wait to try weekend brunch."

  • "Our group was a group of 6 and we were well attended to. I will give the service plenty of credit because we were never in want of anything. When it comes to the food, I'm of two minds. The small plates that we ordered were pretty good. The portions were fairly small, but they had excellent flavor. When it came to the big dishes, I thought it faltered a bit. I had the hamburger and it was more to the dry side than I would've liked, I ordered for it to be done medium. The burger also fell apart easily and became a bit of a mess. Everyone else's dish looked fairly decent, though I did not actually try them. However, I wasn't "wowed" by them. In essence, I expected more. However, the wine and music were great."

  • "I've eaten before at Max's and the food has been great. This time the fried chicken was a bit greasier than last time. The rest of the food was up to par. Thanks."

  • "Have been to Max's many times and it is still a favorite - not only for a light bite and a glass of wine to a more complete dinner. Enjoy the casual and energetic atmosphere. Not necessarily the best place for a business dinner due to noise level. Wine selections are fun and diverse and the changes with the seasonal menu give you something to look forward to with each visit. Some outstanding classic menu items for me are the chicken sliders with the chipotle honey and the shrimp and grits. Have always had good service, favorite server is Daniel. Looking forward to next visit!"

  • "The food was great and our server made some wonderful recommendations, that we ordered, and we were not disappointed. We shared the pork-stuffed chiles (awesome) and had the shrimp and grits (which had a great, spicy kick) and my husband ordered the burger. This is a great, adult place."

  • "Great spot for foodies! My wife and I enjoyed the food, the wait staff, and the music. Amanda, management, was very friendly and made our evening memorable. Thank you all for a great time."

  • "I had already eaten and just stopped in for dessert. I was excited about the Cookie Butter pudding - but oops - they blew it making it with cream cheese?? Not only is it too bitter for the butter - it did not make the batter better - so for a bit of better butter - try using a lighter cream with peanut butter or banana. Too heavy, too rich, but great idea."

  • "Enjoyed the fried chicken and the caesar salad very much! Kids menu was pretty much non-existent. I wasn't thrilled about buying waffles for my kid for lunch at 1:30."

  • "We've been to Max's several times and have a good feel for the place. We've sat along the narrow bar and at tables. This is a lively, fun, but not boisterous place. The menu rotates periodically and always has good offerings. Staff are always friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and have consistently guided us to good choices. Wine samples offered to help cement your choice. The ONLY negative here is the severely limited parking. Bypass the lot, park in the garage, and walk a couple minutes. It's worth it! Overall: VERY GOOD."

  • "Max's was an excellent choice for a special night out. There were many wines to choose from, and the food was incredible. The service we recieved was also top notch. We had a fantastic experience and will be recommending it to everyone we know."

  • "My wife and I had Valentines day dinner and staretd with a couple of appetizer's. The fries and Oyster nachos were great, went good with the bottle of white wine we ordered. For our main dish I had the balckened red fish with a side of brussel sprouts. There is a difference between burning and blackening. (My food was burnt). We brought it up to the waiter and he said they were supposed to be that way (I dont think so but ok). My wife decided to order the scallops and brussel sprouts. She was disappointed when she saw she only got three scallops for 25.00. Those were good, but overpriced and her brussell sprouts were not burned."

  • "Good food and good service. You definitely need a reservation for brunch; the place is packed! Not a place for a quiet meal or conversation. Even though the menu warns that it takes the kitchen extra time to prepare the fried chicken dishes, we found 45 minutes a bit too long. That said, we've been here before, and we'll be back."
    Dined on 2/16/2014
  • "The food is always great. Flavorful and consistent. We are never disappointed and the brunch menu you is always filled with great election. Difficult to choose. The service is always great even when the placed is packed!"

  • "Everything here is excellent! We even ended up buying a case of wine."

  • "We were immediatly seated. Our server let us taste a cojple of wines prior to purchasing and she even gave us discounted prices for wines already opened. We ordered the famous fried chicken and mac-n-cheese. Both werr awsome! Prices were very fair. We will definitely go back!!!"

  • "We were a little early, so we were offered an outside table while we waited. We were able to order drinks, and then were seated inside just shortly after our reservation time. Our waitress from our outside table continued to service our table even though we were now inside. She was amazing. My husband wanted a red wine and she eagerly brought him not one, but 4 samples until she found one he liked. We ordered several small plates and a salad, and opted to have them brought out as they were ready. Food was great and perfect for sharing. The Mac & Cheese is a must-have at Max's. Great experience even on a busy Valentine's day."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed ourselves immensely! The 2 small plates were yummy and the Scallop entree was well prepared and flavorful!"

  • "Food was great, as usual. Wonderful eclectic menu. I had the signature fried chicken with that great honey chipotle sauce and my date had the shrimp and grits. Not to be missed! Noise level is pretty high but expected for the place. And the wine? Superb. Not an inexpensive place to eat, but well worth it!"

  • "The service was great. The food was okay. I saw this place on the food network and tried it for Valentine Day. My husband and I were both disappointed."

  • "I took my wife here for Valentine's Day, she loved the restaurant. We have never been there before and we will definately be going back sometime very soon. They have a large selection of fine wines and staff is very knowledgeable of every selection they have."

  • "From the hostess to the busser, the staff was wonderful and knowledgable. Chris our waiter had selections for me to taste so he could find a wine specific to me. Took his time and explained without me getting a feeling that he was annoyed. I can't wait to get back and try out some new wines and food. Service was perfect"

  • "The food was great, ordered the southern chicken w/ mash potatoes and greens, outstanding. I was little confused about the wine list and could have used more info there, but overall experience was great."

  • "Max's delivered a triple punch for dinner. First, the location and physical establishment was fantastic. It reminded me of being in Dallas instead of San Antonio. Second, the service was fantastic. Our server knew her wines and the food. Her recommendations were spot on. Third, and most importantly, the food was scrumptious! I had the Fried Egg Sandwich with a side of Grits...fabulous."

  • "So we took a few friends (one of which was kind of a picky eater), but somehow enjoyed what was available. For an appetizer, I enjoyed the Nacho Mama's Oysters (Delicious habenaro/cilantro combination - flavorful). And for the entree...a haute dog (aka the most classiest hot dog ever) topped with onion rings, beef and cojita cheese over a bed of house made signature frites. My inner fat boy was out and I polished it off with a Brooklyn Lager...fantastic again!!!"

  • "Nothing amazing to say about this wine bar and restaurant. The name implies something it is not, a dive. This is an expensive place to have a few drinks with friends. We went for 'happy hour" and four drinks and one app cost us $60. That is a bit too much for stopping after work. Its fine, Its nice, but a bit too expensive for not delivering any "wow" factor."

  • "Max's Wine Dive is an enigma, in a good way. Is it a wine bar, or a wine shop, or a restaurant? It's all of the above, but it's no dive. It is very good wine bar, that will sell you as many bottles as you want to to take home, but is also is a very good restaurant with a sophisticated menu of comfort foods. Their signature dish is the fried chicken, but with a more complex seasoning and quality than you will find at the usual chicken places. Max's also has a good selection of small (tapas) style dishes for those who want to sample more of their offerings without filling up on the heartier fare. I have been to Max's a dozen times and the food, service and ambiance has been consistanty good each time."

  • "The food was great and our server was very nice. We were there for my birthday brunch. I looked at the menu and I thought it said lunch was also available during our reserved time. All and all it was a good experience. Next time we will definitely try something from the dinner menu. Again, the food was very good."

  • "Pros: fried chicken, little stuffed peppers appetizer, everything on the brunch menu. Fried oyster appetizer Lots of wine choices Cons: Loud and crowded most of the time. Wine is pricey, no liquor and only a few beers to choose from. Food taste our weighs any negatives. Go."

  • "I usually go for to Max's brunch. I swear Jesus makes the fried chicken. I went for the shrimp n grits though. It was a little soupy but delicious nonetheless and i dont even eat grits. I just wanted to try something different. I certainly dont regret it. Our server took excellent care of us. It was a lttle loud, however."
