Diner Reviews
  • "Small menu but execution is great. Thrilled they have a nicely thought-out composed vegetarian entree option (as opposed to just sides, salads or "vegetable plate" options. Who wants to eat a plate of vegetables??) The "roasted cauliflower picatta" was actually surprisingly tasty given it's not usually my favorite vegetable. Accompanied by delecious Saffron rice, buttery perfectly cooked root veggies. The picatta sauce (lemony / capers / savory) was tasty. I'd def get it again. Our waiter was very sweet and patient with me while I tried to decide on a wine. Desserts looked delish but we were too full to try at that point. Next time!"

  • "Finally got to have the fried chicken. Just as fabulous as the critics have said. Nice little spice added."

  • "Happy Hour here has always been great since there's always been seats outside after work hours. I've also gone here for dinner and brunch. The fried chicken is always great. The stuffed peppers are amazing! All in all: it's easy to walk to, always easy to find a table, and great service for food and drink!"

  • "Excellent menu, great surroundings and wine list. Their fried lobster is amazing!"

  • "Enjoyed MY food but my eggs were overcooked; I asked for soft scrambled. Also there is jalapeno in the cheese grits; it did not state that on the menu; I think it should. All the other ladies really enjoyed their food; the creme brule french toast was excellent and the the fried chicken was outstanding. The only issue we had was with the valet service. This was our first time at MAX's; we were reprimand by one of the valet guy because we did not tip and told that they get paid by tips and in the future please rememeber that. Well #1.We did not know there was valet service and #2. We had no cash on us and #3. I choose who I want to give my money too. I did call and spoke with management and he said he would handle that."

  • "I dined here with my cousin and we were both stuck between 3 different meals that we really wanted to try. Our waiter, Chandler, over heard us and was VERY helpful with giving us options. I think, had I ordered what I was going to settle on, I would not have been quite as happy with this location as I am. I can't wait to go back and try something else.... or the same thing... either would make me happy!"

  • "I had some European friends who had reads about the fried chicken and wanted to try it. Everyone was very happy with the meal. Not a low-cal kind of place, but great comfort food Fried oysters were delicious and lightly fried. Tuna poke salad was very fresh and good quality tuna. I am so happy that there is a MAxs in the Montrose. Love the vibe at this new one."

  • "We got there early because common sense has it that Sunday brunch is always packed. We were seated immediately and given menus. The food was awesome and the staff was very nice and polite."

  • "Excellent food, great service, poor seating for someone with reservations. Will be back despite not having the best table to sit at."

  • "Had the chicken fried turkey from the summer menu. It was amazing! And the potatoes that come with it are wonderful!"

  • "Chef's Special was chicken-fried lobster tail. Over truffled macaroni & cheese! Who even dreams of that? It was even better than it sounds. Topped it off with the perfect wine. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Similar to other Max's location, maybe a touch larger. Loved it."

  • "Outstanding, always good service, great food, conveniently located and a fun place! Never a disappointment!!!"

  • "Beware the "happy hour special" on wine. Five choices for $5 each but the pour was only about 4 ounces on the white and reds. The sparkling wine pour was a more normal 5 - 6 ounces. Food was good as always but can be difficult to pick a dish that hasn't been dunked in the fryer."

  • "I've been to Max's a couple of times, including the Austin location. This new one in Montrose, I thought, would have been a great experience. Unfortunately, it was not. The food was good and the wine was great. The waiter was either overwhelmed or unavailable. I had to remind him that I had ordered a second glass of wine. Very frustrating. Not sure I'll come back to this spot."

  • "so crispy and delicious! with a side of creamy mashed potatoes! yum! The menu could be larger, but they have a decent assortment of things. You might have to get out of your comfort zone though. We were safe in our party of 3 -- we all got the fried chicken! ha"

  • "Food was excellent. Waiter didn't know the menu very well and they were out of a particular draft beer. Always seems to be something amiss when I go, yet keep going back for the fried chicken."

  • "Nice addition to the Montrose dining options. Bar limited to wine and beer only."

  • "The food at Max's Wine Dive is awesome. This was my first time at this location. I prefer the Washington Ave location. The flies at this location were unbearable."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "Not nearly as good as the one on Washington. Some of the food was cold and just not flavorful. Won't go back. On a positive note, the wait staff was friendly and attentive."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "The food and service was wonderful but the noise level was very loud, hard to have a conversation. We went here prior to seeing a matinee play in the theater district."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "This was our 2nd visit to this location, and unfortunately, it was probably our last. It's a shame because it's very close to our home and the food is fine, but the service has been abysmal. On this last visit, only the hostess stopped by to check on us when we started looking for help. Not the server or manager... I don't think I'd have written this review if our server had stopped by to even give us an update on the delay. Instead, we had radio silence. The busboys were great on water refills though when the server stopped coming by and there was no chance to order another beer/wine. The manager tried to help the situation later, but it was too late. Oh, and we had to track down other servers to get plates and utensils. Awesome."

  • "The food and ambiance are much better at the Fairvew location. The maple donuts and wings, wow!"
    Dined on 6/8/2014
  • "I thought the restaurant was very cool and hip..I was a bit disappointed by the food. The donut waffle thing was pretty awful. I was excited by the fried chicken and greens, but you are familiar with real soul food this is a joke! The Red Velvet pancake was edible..that's about it...would recommend for atmosphere and happy hour at best but miss the brunch..."

  • "This restaurant was not terribly crowded at 8 pm on Saturday evening (perhaps 60% full), and in fact most of the kitchen staff, 5 that I could count were standing around idle most of the time chatting. 30 minutes after ordering both appetizers and main courses, I finally flagged down the waiter and asked what the situation was. Oddly enough he went to the kitchen and our main courses showed up immediately after that. The appetizers were then offered half way through the meal, which we declined. I noted the manager then took these to another table as a "free" sample. We won't be returning to this venue, there are just too many good alternatives in Houston to have to tolerate service that has no interest in servicing their clientelle."

  • "The wine list is always our favorite part of Max's. The food is delicious albeit a bit fatty. Lovely atmosphere, a fun place to go with your close friends."

  • "The fried chicken is the best in Houston and great wine list. I always come home with at least six bottles at retail prices!"
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "The food was very good and like the location on Washington. The noise level was reasonable compared to Washington location which can be very noisy because of the music played by restaurant. The wine by the glass was good but the pour size seemed very small for a 14 glass of red wine. The wine bottles seem to have quite a mark-up from the retail price making enjoying wine there harder to do. The layout is nice and it is good to see the kitchen further back compared to the Washington location. The next time I go MAX’s, it will be this location."

  • "I was pleasantly surprised by how great the food was at Max's! Us New Orleans natives can be pretty critical when it comes to food, but the omelette stuffed with goat cheese and collard greens was really great! (The mimosas were spot on, too.) I took the somewhat healthy route... But I was really jealous of the fried chicken on the next table."

  • "Food was ok, average. Prettty disappointed. Love the service and the wine."

  • "We went for their Monday brunch during Memorial Day. Counter service that was not at all efficient. Same person who was taking orders was also on the phone taking future reservations. Food came out quickly but really wasn't the same level as the Washington location. They attempted to tend to the tables with water refills/busing but only had two people on the floor. Food was not warm and chips, usually my favorite, were overly greasy. Great drinks specials and great location. Will come back when the work out their kinks."

  • "I'm new to Houston and my mentor came in town to visit. I researched best places for brunch and MAX's was tops. So I made the reservation not knowing what to expect, but I'm glad I did. My mentor is an editor and very detailed and specific, but the waitress was patient and provided awesome service. I'm not fan of mimosas, but the Flowmosas were nice complements to our dishes. "

  • "Everyone loved their food, our waitress was super nice--we all want to go back soon!"

  • "I really like this place. Food has been great but definitely ask the price of the specials! I once paid $30 for meatloaf. MEATLOAF! I wrongly assumed it would be in the $15-$20 range like all other entree items. It can get pricey but they're also willing to open any bottle of wine as long as you commit to two glasses :) Be sure to order early if you want fried chicken (or get an appetizer). It's super fresh so it's worth the wait (weight?). "

  • "I love Max's in general, but the one on Fairview is awesome! I am here a few times a month. The service is always great, the food is delicious, the ambiance is fun! Max's on Fairview is one of my gems in Houston! "

  • "Beautiful decor and the food you've come to love from the original Max's, just in a different location. No disappointments at all, the hostess and our server were both very accomodating, right down to allowing us to add one more person to our already crowded table! Awesome experience as usual..."

  • "The food was absolutely great!! I had the fried chicken, my sister had chicken and waffles, and my mom had a crab cake, soft crab benndict egg special. Everything was good but the service was just ok. We had a server named Josh and we had to keep asking him for more water, he bought us out the wrong check, and while listing off the specials he urged my mom to get the Mother's Day special but did not mention the price at all. Now I'm not sure if this is a usual thing but her food alone was 40 dollars I just thought that was a little deceiving considering nothing on the menu exceeded 24 dollars. But the food was good so I guess that's all that really matters. "

  • "Delicious food, excellent customer service, and very accomodating. I would definitely go here again! I recommend their Southern Chicken Breast dinner with the collard greens and homefries... and if its brunch I definitely recommend anything with their jalapeno cheese grits! Yum"

  • "The mac n cheese was the best..The rest wax so so. The greens have no flavor and the potatoes are way to spicy . I wish they would turn down the music so u could hear yourself think..would I go back? Probably not. "

  • "We had to shout to be heard across a tiny table. The noise level was just over the top, I've been to quieter heavy metal concerts. We left before ordering due to the noise. Valet service was terrible. They could not figure out which car was ours then nearly ran over my date. Will not go back."
