Diner Reviews
  • "Great food and service and the attitude is the best part, not pretentious at all. Noise level is high but it's just That busy. They even emailed me the name of the wine we had when I couldn't remember the next day."

  • "Amazed that the waitress could find a light, red wine to go perfectly with yummy fried chicken!"

  • "A fun place with great food and excellent selection of wines. Our server was awesome, and helped us select wines. We bought a bottle to take home, too. Odd combination - fried chicken and wine, but it works! Noise level was high (actually, it was the music turned up too loud), but we are older - the younger set loved it."

  • "This was my first trip to Austin and Saturday I was looking for a last-minute eatery and happened upon Max's Wine Dive on Open Table. I have been wanting to try the location in Houston so felt this was a great opportunity to give the chain a try. Good choice! I had the prosciutto and melon salad with added Scallops and a grapefruit mimosa...DELICIOUS!! Great Atmosphere, great service (I sat at the bar)...I will definitely visit the Houston location!"

  • "Max's was a great choice for my group. Our server was extremely helpful with our wine selections. The food was nothing less than decadent. (I've got to try to replicate the bone marrow popcorn at home!). It's easy to see why fried chicken is one of their signature items. I can't say that I've ever had one that was more flavorful. I look forward to further exploring their menu."

  • "We had to wait to be seated at a table even though we arrived on time for our reservation. The people at the table before us were lingering. That is why only 3 stars for service. Once sat at our table, it was a great experience. The food was out of this world! Can't wait to go back."

  • "Max's used to be a place we would take visitors for a casual, unique evening out. We used to rave about the food and inventive dishes. We could always count on cleaver new things on the menu but fabulous stand-bys. My husband had the hamburger (once rated as one of the best in Texas.) The meat mixture has changed it to be just an ok burger. The chicken sliders used to be a reasonably great taste of the chicken they are best known for. Now it is very thin strips of mostly breading. We apologized to our friends for the raves we made about it. We are sad to say we won't be going back. For whatever reason the changes they made to the menu makes it just an average place to go."

  • "Fantastic signature dish that's about some of the best fried chicken you'll ever have. That was the third or fourth time I'd been there, but the first time I had the chicken and it definitely lived up to the expectations."

  • "Enjoyed the food and wine. Staff attentive and helpful. Jukebox broken and would not accept any form of payment - unacceptable."

  • "I found out they had gluten free chicken and my family and I went there to celebrate my birthday recently! The food is incredible, the staff is very knowledgeable about wine as well as food allergies. Overall this is a great place to bring newcomers to Austin or family or friends visiting, its hip and fun and the food is fantastic!"

  • "Had a reservation for 7:30 on a Friday night. The place was packed and it was loud. Since we were just having a casual girls night, that didn't bother us much, but probably not the best for a quiet, romantic evening. Our waitress was great. Friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and wines. It took awhile for dinner to arrive so the manager came around and asked if there was something she could do. I suggested a dessert might be great. After the meal, we were full. Since we were staying nearby, she offered to comp the dessert the following night. We came by the next day and she followed through as promised. I will definitely be returning! Great customer service."

  • "We arrived at 8:00 on a weekday night, and the noise was so awful I wanted to leave immediately. I had invited out-of-town guests, however, and couldn't make arrangements to go elsewhere. I checked outside, but the temperature was in the high 90's and the noise level from San Jacinto was also loud. We then contributed to the noise level by being forced to shout to each other to be heard for at least an hour, and then the place somewhat quieted down. The food was delicious and the service good, but the noise level was unacceptable. I would have to think long and hard before trying this place again."

  • "We had a reservation for 9:30, but showed up at 9. They quickly got our table ready early for us. Our server was great! She was very knowledgable, personable & made everything easy. The food is very good, the collard greens that came with fried chicken were the best I've had!"

  • "Met some friends for drinks and dinner here. The bartender helped me pick out a wine, which after tasting four, found just the perfect one. The only criticism I have is that we ended up choosing wines that were not on the "by the glass" list and they ended up costing around $75 for three glasses of wine and one beer! That being said, we were seated promptly for dinner, received great service, and the food was FANTASTIC. Would definitely return...just with a closer eye on the wine I choose. :-)"

  • "My husband and I had looked forward to dining here, and it was very good. The food was great; not the very BEST of foodie scene, but high marks---could be improved with more attention to seasoning. The wine list was pretty good; I'd have expected more breadth from a wine bar. The one distinct drawback was the incredibly loud stereo system, especially since we were squished in a corner booth right under the speakers. If you're going with a group, definitely make reservations, and if you're disabled, give extra time to thread your way through the tight spaces."

  • "I had not been to Max's for brunch in a few years so when a friend was in town and staying at the hotel across the street, we thought this would be a good place to meet up on Sunday. The food was fine, just not as good or fresh as I remember it being in the past. Everything tasted good, just not as crisp, pretty or flavorful as in the past. the egg sandwich was kind of thin and only had two small pieces of bacon. the eggs were cooked perfectly I will say - it just looked awfully skinny compared to how it used to. my husband had the crawfish benedict. he did say the green chili sauce was very good. everything else on there was meh. our friend had the chicken and waffles. he said the waffle was really good but the chicken was just ok."

  • "Max's Wine Dive always hits the spot with an Austin twist on the tastiest comfort foods! The staff is courteous, attentive, and helpful. Our waiter even treated us to a complimentary serving of french toast at brunch. The quality of food and presentation is outstanding and although their recipes are already quite impeccable, they do cater to please. I got no sass at all when I requested the addition of shrimps added to The SXSX (grits with pulled pork). This expecting momma says it was the perfect brunch - couldn't have asked for a better experience!"

  • "Please bring back the chili dog! That is by far my favorite item. Also, you can make the food just as tasty AND reduce the amount of salt used. We have been several times and noticed this time we were almost overwhelmed with the saltiness of the food."

  • "My wife and I always enjoy Max's. The staff is exceptionally well trained and had a great win knowledge. The antelope and halibut were both terrific. The only negative I have is that the table of cougars next to us were very loud and rather annoying. M sure they made some bad decisions on 6th that night."

  • "Right in the center of things and convenient to our hotel. . I was surprised the wines were so expensive...which does not fit at all with the name or décor of the restaurant...I thought that since it was a Wine Dive, that the prices would be lower...there were no bargains on this menu.!"

  • "I have had the pleasure of experiencing Max's Wine Dive in San Antonio, Dallas and Austin. The Austin location had the best menu and the most friendly service and wait-staff. Kudos to Austin!"

  • "I have been in Max's in Houston and Austin for years but this is the worst service I have had at any restaurant in years. We got to dinner at 915pm and finally got our food after 1030pm even though the restaurant was almost empty. My beer took 30 minutes and then was warm. She didn't tell us the fried chicken took 30 minutes (even though its what they're known for) and she only showed up on occasion despite having no other tables. If I hadn't had many good experiences then I would never go back but hopefully this was an outlier."

  • "Had a great anniversary dinner with my girlfriend here. Service was some of the best I've ever had at a restaurant. Food was perfectly prepared and served in a timely manner. When we asked for wine, our server brought out three selections in a similar style to the wine we usually would drink. The staff even had a local artist come in to draw a pencil sketch of my girlfriend and I celebrating. It was a memorable experience, which is something I don't usually have to say about a restaurant."

  • "Everything was great. The food was amazing. Only complaint is that the volume of the music was more suited to a bar than a restaurant. But if you know that going in it is fine."

  • "I had been wanting to try Max's for awhile now and when my mom looked at the menu online, she agreed this was the spot for our Mother's Day Brunch this year. I arrived early to get out table and the restaurant was able to accommodate our party, which included my elderly grandmother who definitely couldn't sit at a high table. Once seated I ordered a carafe of Mimosas for the table, because it's not Brunch without a little adult beverages. I ordered the Fried Crawfish Eggs Benedict and my mom and grandma both opted for the Chicken and Waffles. Everything was delicious, our server was very friendly and I will definitely be back to try more on this menu! 5 Stars all around!"

  • "We had a corporate team meeting dinner at Max's Wine Dive on a Thursday evening at 7PM. I made reservations in advance and appreciated that they accepted reservations as no other place offered this service. We were seated right away and our server did a great job of explaining the menu and wine selection. We were able to try a few different wines based on what we explained to our servicer we generally enjoy. Then we picked a few bottles to share. The Bison sliders were amazing- I keep thinking about them days later. The Oyster nachos were interesting, too spicy for some at our table, but I loved them. The fried chicken was hands down the best fried chicken I have ever tried."
