Diner Reviews
  • "Vibrant and high energy wine bar with good interesting food combinations. Try the chicken and waffles then expand to the rest of the fun menu."

  • "Met some friends for drinks and dinner here. The bartender helped me pick out a wine, which after tasting four, found just the perfect one. The only criticism I have is that we ended up choosing wines that were not on the "by the glass" list and they ended up costing around $75 for three glasses of wine and one beer! That being said, we were seated promptly for dinner, received great service, and the food was FANTASTIC. Would definitely return...just with a closer eye on the wine I choose. :-)"

  • "My husband and I had looked forward to dining here, and it was very good. The food was great; not the very BEST of foodie scene, but high marks---could be improved with more attention to seasoning. The wine list was pretty good; I'd have expected more breadth from a wine bar. The one distinct drawback was the incredibly loud stereo system, especially since we were squished in a corner booth right under the speakers. If you're going with a group, definitely make reservations, and if you're disabled, give extra time to thread your way through the tight spaces."

  • "Max's Wine Dive always hits the spot with an Austin twist on the tastiest comfort foods! The staff is courteous, attentive, and helpful. Our waiter even treated us to a complimentary serving of french toast at brunch. The quality of food and presentation is outstanding and although their recipes are already quite impeccable, they do cater to please. I got no sass at all when I requested the addition of shrimps added to The SXSX (grits with pulled pork). This expecting momma says it was the perfect brunch - couldn't have asked for a better experience!"

  • "I had not been to Max's for brunch in a few years so when a friend was in town and staying at the hotel across the street, we thought this would be a good place to meet up on Sunday. The food was fine, just not as good or fresh as I remember it being in the past. Everything tasted good, just not as crisp, pretty or flavorful as in the past. the egg sandwich was kind of thin and only had two small pieces of bacon. the eggs were cooked perfectly I will say - it just looked awfully skinny compared to how it used to. my husband had the crawfish benedict. he did say the green chili sauce was very good. everything else on there was meh. our friend had the chicken and waffles. he said the waffle was really good but the chicken was just ok."

  • "Please bring back the chili dog! That is by far my favorite item. Also, you can make the food just as tasty AND reduce the amount of salt used. We have been several times and noticed this time we were almost overwhelmed with the saltiness of the food."

  • "The noise at Max's can be very trying at times. Very hard to have a conversation. But the food is so good that we all feel it is worth going"

  • "My wife and I always enjoy Max's. The staff is exceptionally well trained and had a great win knowledge. The antelope and halibut were both terrific. The only negative I have is that the table of cougars next to us were very loud and rather annoying. M sure they made some bad decisions on 6th that night."

  • "Right in the center of things and convenient to our hotel. . I was surprised the wines were so expensive...which does not fit at all with the name or décor of the restaurant...I thought that since it was a Wine Dive, that the prices would be lower...there were no bargains on this menu.!"

  • "Server was the only disappointment - indifferent and failed to obtain answer re. menu item we had asked for. Maybe, they were understaffed? Food was very tasty and work coming back for."

  • "I have had the pleasure of experiencing Max's Wine Dive in San Antonio, Dallas and Austin. The Austin location had the best menu and the most friendly service and wait-staff. Kudos to Austin!"

  • "I have been in Max's in Houston and Austin for years but this is the worst service I have had at any restaurant in years. We got to dinner at 915pm and finally got our food after 1030pm even though the restaurant was almost empty. My beer took 30 minutes and then was warm. She didn't tell us the fried chicken took 30 minutes (even though its what they're known for) and she only showed up on occasion despite having no other tables. If I hadn't had many good experiences then I would never go back but hopefully this was an outlier."

  • "Had a great anniversary dinner with my girlfriend here. Service was some of the best I've ever had at a restaurant. Food was perfectly prepared and served in a timely manner. When we asked for wine, our server brought out three selections in a similar style to the wine we usually would drink. The staff even had a local artist come in to draw a pencil sketch of my girlfriend and I celebrating. It was a memorable experience, which is something I don't usually have to say about a restaurant."

  • "this is a great place for a casual dinner date or gathering for a group of friends. the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about wines without being overbearing and pedantic and the food is fantastic. we ordered everything from the fried chicken to the mac and cheese and nothing disappointed. this is a great place to just relax, have great food and wine, and just enjoy the company you're with"

  • "Everything was great. The food was amazing. Only complaint is that the volume of the music was more suited to a bar than a restaurant. But if you know that going in it is fine."

  • "I had been wanting to try Max's for awhile now and when my mom looked at the menu online, she agreed this was the spot for our Mother's Day Brunch this year. I arrived early to get out table and the restaurant was able to accommodate our party, which included my elderly grandmother who definitely couldn't sit at a high table. Once seated I ordered a carafe of Mimosas for the table, because it's not Brunch without a little adult beverages. I ordered the Fried Crawfish Eggs Benedict and my mom and grandma both opted for the Chicken and Waffles. Everything was delicious, our server was very friendly and I will definitely be back to try more on this menu! 5 Stars all around!"

  • "We had a corporate team meeting dinner at Max's Wine Dive on a Thursday evening at 7PM. I made reservations in advance and appreciated that they accepted reservations as no other place offered this service. We were seated right away and our server did a great job of explaining the menu and wine selection. We were able to try a few different wines based on what we explained to our servicer we generally enjoy. Then we picked a few bottles to share. The Bison sliders were amazing- I keep thinking about them days later. The Oyster nachos were interesting, too spicy for some at our table, but I loved them. The fried chicken was hands down the best fried chicken I have ever tried."

  • "The food was really good, and the service, but me and my friend ended up with massive stomach aches all day. I have never felt so much pain in my stomach. It was the only thing both of us ate all day and it was jut an awful experience. "

  • "What a great place!! The service was wonderful and the food was amazing. Our server really knew his wine and walked us through a tasting he selected to help us choose our dinner bottle. His choices were fantastic and NOT the most expensive on the menu. We brought our twin 5 year olds and when we ordered Shirley temples for them our waiter went next door to get them (because Max's didn't have grenadine) who does that?!?!? We were totally impressed with every possible element of our experience...we can't wait to go back!!! "

  • "Great food. Location not as notable as Houston. The desserts were divine! The piña colada bread pudding and the pistachio brownie. Fried chicken superb. Fried egg sandwich & chips, greens, chicken sliders fantastic. Quail outstanding!"

  • "Our party of five had a great time, catching up and trying some yummy food! Between us, we had the fried egg sandwich, crawfish eggs Benedict, braised goat tacos, and the chicken and waffles. All were delicious! (We also put away a few carafes of champagne, with orange and grapefruit juices.) Service was friendly and attentive. Really enjoyed it!"

  • "I had heard great things about brunch, but we didn't experience any of them. The eggs that were served with the Braised Goat Benedict and the SXSW were not runny and almost hard-boiled; we waited over an hour to receive our food and our waiter was pretty non-existent. He seemed disappointed that we weren't drinking cocktails for brunch and hid until one of us had to find him to see where our food was and get coffee refills; we never did get water refills. There were only 4 of us. Wouldn't recommend."

  • "I've been to Max's several times over the last year. The food is typically very good and the service had always been great. I'm not sure if they were short staffed on Saturday but our service was extremely slow and not very attentive. I asked twice for a refill on water and never received it and my food arrived cold. Our waiter was extremely slow to take our order, the food took 30 minutes to come out and after the waiter brought us boxes, we ended up having to wait another 20 minutes for the check. The service was so great the times I had been before, maybe it was an off day for our waiter or they were short staffed."

  • "I made it clear in my reservation we were having a brunch meeting and would also like to do a wine tasting for an upcoming wedding. We had a good waitress, but we were put in a very loud (music) part of the restaurant, and it was such a tight squeeze our things kept being knocked over by every server who went by. We did do the wine tasting and my clients bought two bottles for their wedding menu tasting. If they like it, they will be ordering cases from Max's for their wedding. However, I would have expected to have been given a bigger table not under speakers when I gave the purpose of our reservation."

  • "The wine list is decent albeit overpriced. The food was very mediocre. We had the gluten free fried chicken, which was decent but not great. The skin on the chicken was super greasy and soft, not crispy at all. (I should give them props, I suppose, for even having such a dish.) We also had the antelope tenderloin, which I thought was very tough and overly salted. It was certainly not worth the price--a whopping $31--in any event. The food at the Houston location on Washington Ave. is far better. They tend to oversalt their menu to death as well, but the food seems more creative and better executed there than it does at this location. I won't be coming back to this one."

  • "Max's was fine, depending on what you like. The bone marrow butter popcorn was awesome, but heavy. Couldn't eat too much of it. The fried chicken was super moist, but it was marinated in jalapeno buttermilk, and had more kick than I like. The collard greens were doused in so much hot sauce that I couldn't eat them. I know this is Austin, but not everybody likes their food super hot and spicy. Put a bottle of hot sauce on the table and let us spice to taste. As for the wine, certainly a great variety, but not a great value as their website claims. They serve a 5 ounce pour, which they claim is standard. Not really. Six ounces is far more common. Didn't see much under $10 for a 5 ounce glass of wine. Not outrageous, but certainly no bargain."
