  • "This place is amazing! The menu is out if this world and is constantly changing seasonally. The service was spectacular and I'll definitely be going back again and again!"

  • "Our party of five had a great time, catching up and trying some yummy food! Between us, we had the fried egg sandwich, crawfish eggs Benedict, braised goat tacos, and the chicken and waffles. All were delicious! (We also put away a few carafes of champagne, with orange and grapefruit juices.) Service was friendly and attentive. Really enjoyed it!"

  • "I really enjoyed the brunch menu! The pina colada french toast was amazing. The waiter was great and allowed me to order some 1/2 plates so that we could try more from the menu."

  • "Great food, great service. Fun place to enjoy comfort food."

  • "I had heard great things about brunch, but we didn't experience any of them. The eggs that were served with the Braised Goat Benedict and the SXSW were not runny and almost hard-boiled; we waited over an hour to receive our food and our waiter was pretty non-existent. He seemed disappointed that we weren't drinking cocktails for brunch and hid until one of us had to find him to see where our food was and get coffee refills; we never did get water refills. There were only 4 of us. Wouldn't recommend."

  • "I've been to Max's several times over the last year. The food is typically very good and the service had always been great. I'm not sure if they were short staffed on Saturday but our service was extremely slow and not very attentive. I asked twice for a refill on water and never received it and my food arrived cold. Our waiter was extremely slow to take our order, the food took 30 minutes to come out and after the waiter brought us boxes, we ended up having to wait another 20 minutes for the check. The service was so great the times I had been before, maybe it was an off day for our waiter or they were short staffed."

  • "Great Austin Funky downtown restaurant. Very extensive wine list. Our waiterAustin, did a great job. Efficient, friendly and knowledgeable! A must goto restaurant in Austin!"

  • "I made it clear in my reservation we were having a brunch meeting and would also like to do a wine tasting for an upcoming wedding. We had a good waitress, but we were put in a very loud (music) part of the restaurant, and it was such a tight squeeze our things kept being knocked over by every server who went by. We did do the wine tasting and my clients bought two bottles for their wedding menu tasting. If they like it, they will be ordering cases from Max's for their wedding. However, I would have expected to have been given a bigger table not under speakers when I gave the purpose of our reservation."

  • "The wine list is decent albeit overpriced. The food was very mediocre. We had the gluten free fried chicken, which was decent but not great. The skin on the chicken was super greasy and soft, not crispy at all. (I should give them props, I suppose, for even having such a dish.) We also had the antelope tenderloin, which I thought was very tough and overly salted. It was certainly not worth the price--a whopping $31--in any event. The food at the Houston location on Washington Ave. is far better. They tend to oversalt their menu to death as well, but the food seems more creative and better executed there than it does at this location. I won't be coming back to this one."

  • "Max's was fine, depending on what you like. The bone marrow butter popcorn was awesome, but heavy. Couldn't eat too much of it. The fried chicken was super moist, but it was marinated in jalapeno buttermilk, and had more kick than I like. The collard greens were doused in so much hot sauce that I couldn't eat them. I know this is Austin, but not everybody likes their food super hot and spicy. Put a bottle of hot sauce on the table and let us spice to taste. As for the wine, certainly a great variety, but not a great value as their website claims. They serve a 5 ounce pour, which they claim is standard. Not really. Six ounces is far more common. Didn't see much under $10 for a 5 ounce glass of wine. Not outrageous, but certainly no bargain."

  • "Fried chicken w/ spicy honey is amazing! Along with the fried egg sandwich. Not a healthy place to eat by any means, but everything on the menu sounds delicious. Wines/Beers are pretty expensive, so don't expect to get out for two without spending close to $100."

  • "Fried chicken and wine go well together if both are done correctly . Max's delivers with a great wine selection and delicious fried chicken."

  • "I love my Sunday brunch, I really do. The food is great, the staff is awesome, a giggle with glee seeing no one going into that Dallas tex-mex restaurant. But do we have to wait for SXSW to have a different brunch menu? I loved having Shrimp and Grits and sliders for lunch. My friends Doug and Wendy were equally blown away. Next Sunday I'll be back to enjoy this limited brunch menu. But please consider adding a few of the items just one Sunday a month. You folks are awesome at what you do and I really consider you one of the really cool spots in Austin (and I know this town). All I'm asking is it would be nice to shake up the Sunday Brunch menu. I'm sure there are training and costs associated - OK, I'll pay. Thanks Scott Stookey"

  • "I made reservations for my fiance and I to come here to celebrate his 24th birthday when we heard the Austin location had gluten-free fried chicken. We ordered two house wines, the roasted tomato popcorn as an appetizer, pork-stuffed peppers, and a plate of the GF fried chicken. All of it was amazing! Service was excellent, and our server, Eric, even brought out a blueberry crumble with bourbon ice cream for a complimentary dessert. Can't say enough good things about this place - they have gained two loyal customers!"

  • "The only reason I didn't give this place a 5 star rating is because of the parking. The parking was so horrible it took me over 45 minutes to find a parking spot."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "Food and service was great - will definitely return. I do not usually order fried chicken but since it was one of their signature dishes I had to try it - best I have ever had - moist and crunchy! Some at the table had the shrimp and grits and that to was outstanding!"

  • "We had another great meal at MAX's! We took an out of town friend here for Brunch and it didn't disappoint. We love coming here for brunch especially. I got the PB &J french toast which was out of this world. The service was also fantastic. I highly recommend MAX's."

  • "From the Fied Jalepeno Oysters and Shrimp and Grits, to the Scallops and Antelope, all outstanding. Great food choices with good portion sizes, but not too heavy. Brunch is amazing. I've dined there three times in the last two weeks. FANTASTIC place overall."

  • "Enjoyed the food- I had the fried chicken sliders! YUM! I also enjoyed the wine selection, many to choose from and our waitress let us sample a few kinds before choosing."

  • "I'm currently on a high protein diet and the antelope was an excellent choice for me!"
    Dined on 2/28/2014
  • "Food was bland or just not very good. My BF had the antelope and he really liked that, but that was the best part of the meal. It was very loud and would have been better just for a glass of wine, then I'd be off to dinner somewhere else. Long story short...not the absolute worst I've ever had, but probably won't be back."

  • "I picked Max's because my husband I and were going to the Paramount and wanted to find a good dining option nearby. I'm pregnant and I didn't get to enjoy any of the wine so I didn't get the full experience but my husband had a Malbec that he said was very tasty. We weren't super hungry so we split the grilled romaine salad with pork belly which was delicious. We also split the fried chicken which was moist and crispy, I'm not a big fan of greens but I even liked the collard greens that were served with the chicken. We ended up each getting a dessert - the brownie and the apple blackberry crisp and both were great. The brownie is huge - definitely one to share next time. We'd come back, though definitely when I can have some wine!"

  • "We went here for dinner recently and found ourselves yelling to be heard over the music. Two people at our table ordered the fried egg sandwich--delicious. Another person ordered the shrimp grits--watery and unimpressive. The cobbler or crisp that we had for dessert was unremarkable...basically hot fruit stew with no crisp whatsoever. Also, the valet driver almost backed my car into a pole. Thanks bro."

  • "My husband and I had an excellent anniversary dinner at Max's. The wait person could not have been more friendly and helpful. My husband is a picky eater. Unlike some places that scoff at such requests, she was very accommodating and made suggestions to help the ordering process. She treated us like it was her job to make us happy, which I think it is. But I personally find that the hospitality at some Austin restaurants lacks good service mostly due to a lack of abundant availability of professional hospitality workers. Max's is an exception to that. As I expected, the wine and food was wonderful. The biggest hit was the creme brulee. It was amazing."

  • "Super experience all around. Get the fried chicken."

  • "We enjoyed our first encounter with Max's. A bit surprised by the eclectic menu, when the online descriptions and reviews all talked about "comfort food"...but I guess our interpretation of that is different than the Chef's. The wine list was amazing, and the suggestion from our server was noteworthy. Personally I had their "famous" fried chicken and found it a bit dry and in need of seasoning, and while served with mashed potatoes they were smothered with some green leafy vegetable that, had I known it was to be served...I would have opted out. Others in our party enjoyed their inventive salads, and as mentioned already the service was impeccable."

  • "First time at Max's on Valentine's Saturday. The waitress was very knowledgeable and honest about being so busy! The restaurant was incredibly noisy however - it was difficult to even hear her speak. The food was delicious, but a bit overpriced and all but one of our dishes was tepid. How do you make fried oysters come out so fast and yet not hot??? Not sure if I'll return at those prices."

  • "We dined here on Valentine's Day after a show. We were running a tad late for our reservation, so we called to let them know. They were so kind and had no problem with holding our table until we got there. The food was delicious and the waitstaff professional and friendly. try the egg sandwich with applewood smoked bacon! We'll definitely be back!"

  • "Best night ever! The staff was amazing, will be going back for sure! The atmosphere is fun, its a cozy place but good mix of people and the food was great! Had the mac & cheese, yummmmy! Then the bison sliders and fried oysters. Delicious!"

  • "Grfeat evening. Remarkable food preparation not found at other restaurants. The antelope tenderloin was delightful as well as other options. Will have to return to try them all. Shout out to our server Austin, he was attentive but never hovering, and didn't try to oversell any item. He made simple suggestions, then let the food and preparation speak for him. Thanks for an enjoyable evening dinner."

  • "We went to Max's Wine Dive for his birthday dinner and give it 3 of 5 stars for an {informal but decent} dinner. 1. We were seated promptly & the server was attentive and fast 3. The volume was moderate which is huge for us because too many times a fine dinner is ruined by the chaotic atmosphere 4. They served a delicious desert {kitchen sink} at the end for his birthday for free and the cheese plate appetizer was delicious. Why not give it 5 stars? The burger was simply average and the grilled cheese wasn't very flavorful. Conslusively: The food was good for a timepass, but not salivating, memory making great."

  • "It feels wrong for 2 people to have a hot dog and a hamburger, wine and beer for almost $100. Usually this is one of my favorite places; guess it was just an off night!"

  • "A friend recommended this place. But I wouldn't pass it along. Food was just fair. There are so many better places in Austin. Ambience was just okay. In a town of unique restaurants, this felt like a chain trying to be dive-y and cool."
