A word from Max's Seafood Cafe
Max's Café was built in 1890 as a shoe store. In 1912, 34 North Burlington Street reopened as Leisinger's Saloon for the next 25 years even through prohibition (as a "soft drink establishment"). In 1937, Leisinger's Saloon passed through the family & was renamed Max's Cafe; it’s name for the next 65 years. In 1977, a new simply prepared fresh seafood menu transformed Max's Cafe into Max’s Seafood Café. The neighboring building was acquired to seat the growing number of patrons from both sides of the Delaware River, often forming lines around the corner, waiting to enjoy fresh flounder, shrimp, clams, & most of all, Steamed Mussels! Max's reputation grew for the next 22 years before age & neglect left it in a state of disrepair. The bar restaurant closed in July of 1998 & remained dormant for 2 ½ years. Refurbished in late 2000, Max's Seafood Cafe reopened on June 2, 2001 to continue its tradition of hospitality, impeccably fresh seafood, & most of all Steamed mussels.

  • Very disappointed in service
    OpenTable Diner Since 2007

Very disappointed in service - we had 5PM reservation, but it was as though they were not ready for customers at 5PM. We had one waitress start our meal and another finish it and neither one provided much service. We were never offered bread or specials like all tables around us. Waitress seemed to disappear for long periods of time - couldn't be found when we needed something. Very disappointed since we were there to celebrate my dad's 73rd b-day! Mussels were great, but most entrees nothing to write home about.

A neighborhood gem is a perfect description for this restaurant. Tom, the owner, is pleasant and welcoming, as well as knowledgable about his food and wines. The food was creative, fresh, and tasty. Our server was good, but not as friendly as we were expecting given our warm welcome. If it hadn't been for Open Table, we never would have found or tried Max's because of its location in a seedy feeling area. However, we would definitely return because of its friendly atmosphere and delicious food.

Fairly large menu with simple, unpretentious seafood offerings and a few non-seafood options. The decor is cheery & warm. Great belgian beers on the menu and a full bar, but we never saw a wine list. Portion sizes were odd: I had a gargantuan spinach salad, but my entree consisted of a total of 3 shrimp. I was hoping for something fresh but - other than the raw bar items and (hopefully) the many choices of mussles - there were no hints on the menu or from our server about what was fresh or a favorite. Tasty, but not "wow". Unfortunately, the very inexperienced (or just unpleasant) service put a damper on the experience. But there was enough promise that we are both looking forward to trying Max's again soon

  • Found the place to be too
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 11/1/2008
Found the place to be too many tables crowded into a small space. There were lots of large groups and just the two of us who were seated at a tiny table in the midst of these large groups. We were even asked to move our table to accommodate a large group. Appetizers were very good (I had their signature mussells) but the entrees were just so so and took a very long time to arrive. Our waitress never even stopped to apologize or update the status. I would not go back.

We went on a Tuesday during restaurant week. The food was good with generous portions. The balsamic salad dressing was bland. The 4 of us shared the apps: muscles, crab cake, calamari - all very good. Entrees were good. Service was descent.

the food was very good, but the service was terrible, no one ever came back to the table to see if we needed any more drinks and we had to ask 2 different employees for refills to get them finally after 30 minutes. Our waitree treated us like we were bothering her very rude, and just so you know it was no very busy so that was not the reason No water or refills on breads no one ever even asks.

Wonderfully fresh and uncluttered cuisine. Bold and basic. Dinner for two about $65. including gratuity and a couple of premium beers. Go easy on the bread or you'll never finish the main course. Should be on every dinner's, "I've been there", list. Will be welcomed by those nearby C.C.Philadelphian's looking for theat next great place to eat. Be sure to take in the amazing lighting of St. Mary's church steeple if you're in that neighborhood at night.

Max's chef is to be commended. The selections that my husband and I were served were well flavored, the portions adequate (more would have been overkill) hot, presented well, and above our expectations. The restaurant is not in the same area as the bar, but it should be noted that the drinks were excellent. The timing was good, we did not feel pressured or rushed and yet the dinner kept moving along. Would have liked linen tablecloths, it would have complemented the efforts of the chef and staff. M. Repeat visit for my wife and myself. The food remains excellent, but the service is deteriorating. This was a strength at one time. We had an 8 PM reservation and the restaurant was busy but not wall to wall people. Our server "forgot" my appetizer and my wife's potatoes and had to be reminded. She never came back to the table to check on us until it was time to leave the check. Good meal but a disappointing dining experience.

You can go to Philly pay alot for parking(& food & gas & toll), maybe, just maybe, get a table @ one of the Belgian restaurants to have mussels with maybe a few choices of sauce,or you can go to Max's, for a great price, & have the choice of 5(yes, 5), maybe more if the chef feels like it. Here's the clincher...they were also great. Buffalo calamari..so good it had to be wrong. Tender, tasty, little bits of blue cheese tossed in. MMM!! It was like finding chocolate chips in a brownie, yeah, that good. As for the entrees, pick two, ask the server to choose, and you can't go wrong. We didn't with Pasta Pescatore or the grilled shellfish. A great server always knows the entire menu. 2 words to accompany the meal: rum punch;3 to end it: key lime pie

we dined here on the recommendation of a friend. the service was perfunctory(except for the sweet young lady who cleared our plates, she was warm and friendly). the food was mediocre. nice presentation on the pork chops, but lacking in flavor. coconut shrimp lacked flavor of coconut, the frying technique overpowered the succulent shrimp inside and the sauce did not compliment what should have been the delicate flavor of the coconut, disappointing overall. sorry.

True Bar atmosphere with above avrage food. Several large groups were there as it was Mother's Day. The pace was a bit slower than we would have liked but the service was atentive and we were all served hot food at the same time. The wine list was outstanding and their house selections were top notch. We were all impressed with the quality of the food. The muscles were among the best I have had and enough to share as an appatizer. I was not impressed however with the Calimari another signature item. It was over cooked and greasy. The pasta dish, suf and turf with the crab imperial stufed shrimp, plank slamon, Piella and the special soft shell crab were all cooked to perfection, presented beautifully and delicious.
