A word from Max's Oyster Bar
Max's Oyster Bar is the fourth creation of restaurateur Richard Rosenthal and his partner Bob Cooke, formerly of Legal Seafood Restaurant Company. Located among unique shops, coffeehouses, and several restaurants, Max's Oyster Bar compliments West Hartford Center's charming and growing shopping district. The understated atmosphere of muted colors and comfortable seating allows diner's to focus on the truly important, the food. Featuring modern renditions of classic American seafood, Max's Oyster Bar menu has something for everyone. While seafood is the focal point, there are selections for even the most land bound. Ethnic influences are apparent throughout a menu filled with new interpretations on traditional fare.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Good food, service and drinks plus you can get a nice desert."
    Dined on 7/19/2014
  • "What I liked: several unusual fish specials, willing to customize some dishes to diners' taste, carrot stick appetizers were delicious. Quality of food was excellent. Faux pas handled well - my food was delayed when others were served. Hostess apologized and I received free drink. What I didn't like: The level of noise from the bar made conversation almost impossible. Was much more than energetic - need to find a way of fixing this. We didn't ask to be moved and we should have. Service was so so - needed to remind waiter of things he hadn't brought that we asked for."

  • "We have enjoyed Max's OB for many years - it's pricey (West Hartford CT) but we feel it's worth it. Great selection of East and West coast oysters. Many of various fresh fish, crab, lobster, mussel, scallop, clam, & other seafood selections. Other's who want meat have not been disappointed."

  • "Was here years ago and remembered it fondly and was in the area again and wasn't disappointed. Lobster special great and so were the raw oysters. Very accommodating with special requests. Recommended."

  • "Spectacular seafood. Itgoes from fancy chef's choices to as simple as you would like. Always highest quality, raw or prepared."

  • "Another terrifc dinner at Max Oyster Bar. The servers are well trained, the raw oysters and clams were fresh and succulent, and our cod and salmon entrees were excellent. We'll be back soon."

  • "After hearing our kids rave about Max's Oyster Bar back in January, we made our first visit a little over 6 weeks ago. Then we raved about it back to our kids and thanked them for telling us about it. So, on a recent visit they made this past weekend, we all went and enjoyed ourselves tremendously. We also brought in-laws new to West Hartford who only typically eat fish or pasta in restaurants, so this was a great choice for them. Service was excellent--attentive, but not hovering. Food was hot and fresh and came out at a good, but leisurely pace--not too slow, but not too fast. It is a great place for couples, groups or just about anyone who really enjoys a great seafood meal."

  • "We had an excellent time at Max's Oyster Bar. The food was amazing as always… You can't go wrong!"

  • "Only challenge was finding it from downtown, but definitely worth the trouble!"
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "Many people have said that this was a great place and they were right. The food was very good and the wait staff was attentive and friendly. There was a large party seated next to us, so the noise level was pretty high, but overall, the experience was great."

  • "Loved the food and ambiance however a little too noisy when sitting near the bar"
    Dined on 6/11/2014
  • "My wife and I stopped there for lunch and were happy we did. Max's whole belly clams are "to die for." We couldn't resist and ordered a second basket--and that's saying something at $21/order! So, if you like a rare southern New England specialty and have the $$ for the occasion give Max a visit. Their sides--cauliflower and spinach--are also excellent and they have a nice wine and beer list as well."

  • "Frequent Max oyster often. Oysters are now so miniscule the restaurant needs to rethink it's name. Our entrees were also poor. Poor execution and lackluster flavor. We hope our next visit is better. Tony Secombe"

  • "Me and my wife celebrated our first anniversary at Max Oyster Bar. My wife loved the food as she is in love with seafood. I ordered a steak well done. Unfortunately, I got it medium well. That was the only lopsided. The environment was inviting and somewhat cozy, but not too fancy [which is great for me]. The waitress was very courteous and willing to explain all the menu. Even the manager when to our table to get feedback of our experience. We love it and definitively will return in a near future."

  • "I've been to MOB a number of times, and have always had a great experience. To me, the food is worth the price tag. However, when I took my boyfriend there Friday night to celebrate a special occasion, I was a bit dissapointed by the service, in that she never brought out our appetizer. It made for what felt like a dissapointing, and somewhat rushed meal. I knew he was dissapointed as well. I usually don't mind paying well over $100 for two people, but absolutely not when you're forgetting a simple thing such as an appetizer. Honestly, I would prefer to dine down the street where the food is just as good, the price is a bit more modest, and attention to detail is a priority."

  • "Great as always. They used to have a better menu with options to have fish any way you want. I had to ask for this. The menu should be more detailed. "

  • "We orderes shrimp and cocktail sauce but the person fixing the shrimp for got the sauce, what was he thinking?"

  • "Seems to be transitioning to more expensive for less delivered. "

  • "I would expect a $26 Lobster Roll to be PERFECT. But the one I had the other day was not. While it had a good amount of lobster, most of it was tough. It tasted very good though. I would have liked it better if the lobster had been cut up into some smaller pieces rather than the large (tough) pieces. The roll it came up was buttered but extremely soggy. It came with fries that were delicious and a cole slaw, also delicious. We also had calamari that was cooked perfectly and came with an Asian-type dipping sauce that was delicious and went really well with the calamari. "

  • "Great food...wonderful waitress...perfect night out!"

  • "Went here frequently, but the last couple times, things seemed sloppy. The first, which we made clear was a special occasion, got totally botched because the "birthday girl" got delivered the totally wrong main course, which meant that we had to wait 15 more minutes, at which point, the meals for the other members of the party were soggy and warmed over unprofessionally. We didn't even want to stay for the complementary dessert. The second time, we were strongly pitched the fried chicken special for Thurs. night, and the chicken was soggy outside and dry inside. There seems to be something strange going on with quality control."

  • "Never been disappointed at Max Oyster. Simply well prepared, tasty food with a classy decor. Dependable go to place for delicious food."

  • "Food is always good here but was a just a bit too salty this time. "
    Dined on 5/19/2014
  • "Very very noisy on the night we dined. Service was slacking as well as the waiter seemed overwhelmed and frazzled. This led to his interrupting our conversation, his joining in on our private conversations, and untimely delivery of bar drinks. "

  • "We have long wanted to try Max's Oyster Bar since moving back to West Hartford. Our children had visited in January and went and really enjoyed it for lunch and want to go back. We made our reservation here and went. It was well worth the evening. The food was truly amazing. It was an early evening and the place was already jumping, and I'm very happy we had that reservation otherwise, I doubt we would have been able to get a table. Great service and very fresh seafood and was loaded with flavor. We told our kids we had gone and they want us to all go when they next come to town!"

  • "Max Oyster Bar MOB) is our "Go To" restaurant for Fine Dining Seafood. The Stonington Sea Scallops with Risotto is a world class dish. The Chilean Sea Bass is wonderful as well. MOB also has great Raw Bar selections. The wine list is very good with a wide variety of wines with both modestly priced wines and upper tier selections. We have been fortunate in that we were able to get a window table far enough from the bar area to have a nice quiet meal. The last two times we went (in the past 3 weeks) we had two different servers, both of which were excellent. We ask for extra time between courses because we weren't in a hurry and the timing was perfect."

  • "My wife and I went to Max's to celebrate our 28th anniversary. We were seated in an intimate booth and had a wonderful time. Service was attentive, raw bar (littlenecks) were outstanding, seafood dinners were fresh, well put together with great presentation, and we appreciated the gluten-free rolls and desserts. All-in-all a fabulous evening."

  • "I frequent all of the Max Resturants quite regularly. My favorite of them (and my favorite restaurant overall) is Max Oyster Bar. I had the occasion to dine there on Wednesday night of this week. It was a special occasion for a dear friend who had never been there before. I treated her to lobster with the mushrooms and the spinach on the side. Everything was cooked perfectly and spectacular. It was a great experience overall and I will certainly be returning time and time again."

  • "Max Restaurants always put together strong restaurants. Max Oyster has been a fixture in the West Hartford scene since it opened a few years ago. It's usually a business, dinner and bar scene. However, they put on a excellent brunch and it's certainly a brunch we'll return to. My wife loved her lobster frittata."

  • "A huge downpour in the early evening did not keep the guests away from celebrating Mother's Day, graduations or the first really nice Spring day. The soft shell crabs were fabulous. The dining room was very busy, but our server was friendly and gracious. A lovely evening."

  • "One of the best meals I've ever had. Service was terrific, too. It's a reasonably large open space so can get a little noisy when crowded but I would definitely return."

  • "We attended the Lunch Club featuring Zaca Mesa wines. The prix fixe menu was very tasty and adventurous and the wines were outstanding, particularly the Z Cuvee. The service was excellent as always. All of the Max restaurants demand high standards from the chefs and everyone else, and the results are consistently excellent."

  • "We were a bit late in making reservations but were able to get them at Max's Oyster Bar the evening of Easter Sunday. It was the Max's restaurant week and they offered a 3 course price fix meal. I had the dinner rolls, Caesar salad, Salmon and a great chocolate dessert. "

  • "I have been to Max's several times, and it is always delicious. The food is excellent, there is a large menu, and the service has always been professional. Sometimes it is a bit crowded and noisy, but it is worth it. I particularly enjoy the crab cakes, and the salads are wonderful. I had the scallops at dinner this time, and they were excellent, as well. There were four of us at dinner, and we were all pleased with what we had. (On this form, under #2, is that supposed to say Brunch? You are missing an R.)"
