Max's Oyster Bar is the fourth creation of restaurateur Richard Rosenthal and his partner Bob Cooke, formerly of Legal Seafood Restaurant Company. Located among unique shops, coffeehouses, and several restaurants, Max's Oyster Bar compliments West Hartford Center's charming and growing shopping district. The understated atmosphere of muted colors and comfortable seating allows diner's to focus on the truly important, the food.   • "We were a bit late in making reservations but were able to get them at Max's Oyster Bar the evening of Easter Sunday. It was the Max's restaurant week and they offered a 3 course price fix meal. I had the dinner rolls, Caesar salad, Salmon and a great chocolate dessert. "

  • "My husband and I have been dining here for several years and within the last year I had been shying away from Max Oyster due to what I felt was sub par service and food that was good, but not outstanding. This visit erased all of my complaints. Since it was our anniversary I requested a quieter table, and we were accommodated the best we could be on a busy Friday night. Our server was outstanding; knowledgeable, friendly, his recommendations were spot on, and most importantly, he didn't make us feel rushed. We started with oysters and they were awesome. My husband had the scallops and loved them, I went with the mahi mahi, which may have been one of the best meals I've had in years. Overall it was terrific, I'm back on the Max bandwagon!"

  • "Once again, we thoroughly enjoyed another great evening at Max's Oyster Bar. The waiter was absolutely outstanding and we took him up on several of his recommendations. The Seafood Sampler is to die for ... all of the raw shellfish and chilled seafood goodies. It's thee perfect appetizer. Entrees were spot on ... exactly cooked to order and embodied outrageous, complex flavors. Gotta admit, the side of brussel sprouts was a little overcooked (charred) and probably wouldn't order them again. The dessert made up for any shortcomings of the veggie. It's definitely become our go to spot for a night to remember."

  • "Consistent / Great Food & Service - We were a party of 3 and ordered from the "specials" menu - 3 course dinner. Gazpacho was exeptional - a little grainy - but perfect bite of horseradish, very fresh and spring were spot on, salad was less exciting. For entrees the salmon was wonderful - done to perfection. The boullibaise was a well receivied - broth was incredible. Desserts of chocolate mousse cake and lemon cheesecake both very good. Exceptional noisy on Friday nights but worth it."

  • "I have long been a fan of MOB, but I definitely felt that the extra items I found on our bill might not have been there accidentally. Things happen at any restaurant, but this just seemed disappointing. And sadly, I found the food choice I made equally disappointing for the first time ever."

  • "Came in during Max restaurant week--we got some raw bar stuff, a crab cake, and one of the 3-course deal meals. The salad was just OK...the lamb was tough--raw near the bone, and gristly. The lemon poppyseed cheesecake ROCKED. Out waitress Vicky was VERY GOOD."

  • "We had an excellent meal; I had both the fresh oysters and the baked oysters as an entree. The raw oysters were fresh and the baked oysters had an excellent texture and composition. We do not live in Hartford, but visit from time-to-time. The service was first rate. We arrived on a VERY bust night for a Saturday 8 pm reservation in prime time with the UCONN game on tv and a large crowd at the bar. We were seated at 8:01 pm. This is my favorite restaurant in West Hartford."

Our waiter,Ronald, was fantastic and his suggestions from the calamari to the lobster and dessert were spot on. First time at Max's Oyster bar but definitely not our last. The anniversary card was an added touch!"

  • "My wife had wanted to try this restaurant for some time, and not being a seafood eater I was reluctant to give it a shot. Needed a nice place to bring her for her birthday and decided this would be a nice treat. Ambiance was excellent. Very pleasant and professional staff. Clean bathrooms. Very good food, seafood and non-seafood alike. Price was where you'd expect a good seafood restaurant to be in a well to do suburban area. Highly recommend this establishment and Open Table...   • "We met our son here as a midway point between New Jersey and Boston to celebrate his 30th birthday. Our server was terrific--helpful, accommodating and friendly. She gave our son a Max Oyster Bar birthday card and placed a candle on our desert plate. Brunch was delicious. A good time was had by all!"

  • "My husband and I have been going to Max Oyster since it opened. Last Saturday was the first bad experience we have ever had. We made reservations ahead of time but there was not a table reserved for us even though we arrived early. We ended up sitting at the booth right next to the door. It was so cold I had to put my husband's jacket on.(This was our second table after we complained about the first). There was constant noise as people were standing around the entrance waiting to be seated. It was very busy, a good thing I know, but the service was mediocre and the food was poor."

  • "My wife and I have been frequenting the Oyster Bar for many years and typically go about once a month. The food is always excellent, but has never prompted me to write a review. If you haven't been there In a while, or have never been, the refreshed menu is worth the trip. My wife has a gluten intolerance, so when we were seated they accommodated her with the most delicious bread she's had in a while. The raw bar is always fresh and exquisite. We started with hamachi crudo, amazing. My wife had the trout with hominy grits, delicious, and I had the new salmon dish, best ever. Thank you for the refreshed menu, we can't wait to try them all. To drink, some great new delicious concoctions and always a great wine list. Salut."

  • "Max's is a solid restaurant but not exceptional. Too often the fish/seafood dishes are 'fancied up' with sauces that do nothing but add calories and mask flavors of the fish. Recently, the dishes were not even hot...whether a miso broth for a sea bass or the grits with the shrimp. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and flavorful but the grits were at room temperature and had a slight crust which shows they were cooked and sitting a fair amount of time before serving. My husband ordered a lobster roll and the lobster was chewy and over cooked. It's still a nice place and West Hartford people are not the most sophisticated, daring diners around."

The staff had a hard time trying to get around us, my husband felt very much in the way. The food was good, not crazy good like I expected for the price. II started with the Mussels, they had very little taste, didn't finish! I will say the place was hopping and our service was excellent! Terri, I believe."

  • "It lives up to its name. The oysters are delicious and varied - available both raw and cooked. The Oysters Rockefeller is so good! There is an extensive menu of seafood and a few meat options. All of it is fresh and creatively prepared. It is pricey, but well worth it for a special treat!"

  • "The Max Group is known for its top-notch food, service, and ambiance. Our meal at the Oyster Bar was lacking in the first two departments. Our split chopped salad didn't seem fresh, the rolls (supposedly from a local bakery) seemed like standard dinner roll you can buy in your grocer's freezer, and the steak (quite expensive, I might add), was less than top quality and was not cooked to either my husband's or my preferred doneness. For that kind of money, I expect something pretty close to perfection. Not sure if we'll be going back."
