Max's Opera CafeThe food was very good andThe food was very good and the dessert muy bueno. The only thing the waitress forgot was to bring the bread plate. This is a big one since my guest and I are both bread lovers.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat location to the SF OperaGreat location to the SF Opera House. Recently cut back number of items available on the menu. Most hot meals were not healthy options. Miss Grandma's Honey Chicken.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMMuch betterI made a return visit. Much better. The server makes the difference. He refilled, ask questions and made things the way they should be. The server can make or break your business.6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMTasty and homeyI'm always happy to go to Max's. The atmosphere is relaxed, the servers are friendly, and the food is good with enough variety so that everyone can find something they like. Plus there's a bookstore just steps away where you can while away time if you've arrived early. How could it get any better?6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMalways goodWhat they say is right....it's both a great place for a diet and a bad place for a diet. Lots of options at Max's, and you can choose what direction you'd like to go. The desserts are fabulous, if that's what you're in the mood for. We are vegetarians, and there are good options for us....REALLY appreciate that there is a veggie burger on the menu!! Great for adults, kids...everyone can find something they like on the menu.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMA long-standing San FranciscoA long-standing San Francisco tradition. Had not been there in years. Glad to see that quality and service were still high on their list.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMGood old Max'sFood is just as good as ever, but the menu is much less extensive than it used to be. Sign of the times, I guess. It remains an enjoyable dining experience.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was very good, and 25%Food was very good, and 25% off for wine if you ordered the featured meal was a great deal. All in all, a great price performer.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, perfect for preGreat food, perfect for pre or post music performances on Van Ness Street.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMMax's before the TheaterThis wasn't our first meal at Max's Opera location; we've been enjoying the food for years. However, this was our first visit with children in our party! We were given a great table. Kid menus were provided and listed true kid gems at reasonable prices. Crayons and a coloring sheet came in quite handy. Adults and children enjoyed their meals, and were most certainly not left hungry. Delightful evening was had by all.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMBest deli in SFMax's is just a great deli/restaurant. The food is always really good, fresh, tasty and as it should be. When you order coleslaw, you get the real thing--not something tricked up with onions or green peppers, just the real thing. The Ruben is exactly what you would expect a great Ruben to be--generous amounts of corned beef, just the right amount of sauerkraut, grilled rye, melted cheese--perfect. Deserts are amazing--not trendy, just great carrot cake, pies, etc.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMDanwe were disappointed. Last time we were there was about a year ago, when it was packed. This time it was about half filled. The service as prompt and friendly. We ordered soup or salad and hot sandwiches, which came right after we received our first coarse and we asked the waiter to take them back and keep them hot. When they came later they were not hot and were overcooked.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMMenu has been shortenedI'm an out of town visitor and once LOVED Max's. Now, I just like it. They once had an extensive menu with lots of great, fun items. Pretty short and boring now. I'll still go there but I won't bust my hump to get there like I once did.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMSF BalletWe arrived 25 minutes prior to our reservation, but were seated right away. However we were seated way in a back corner (several other tables were available) next to an open window at a busy intersection. The server was very attentive and helpful. He seemed to anticipate our needs before we even knew we had them. The food was eh. We each had the pastrami sandwich. The meat was very fatty, making it hard to eat and not a great experience. We did ask to have the window closed only to have another employee come by and try to open it again. He looked at me in disbelief when I asked him to keep it closed. All in all, a good experience and will go back the next time we attend the ballet.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMOne (of many) great dinnersMax's does not disappoint. Get "Monte" as your waiter - funny guy with great customer service..

Went on a Monday night so it was super quiet. Not sure if it gets louder throughout the week into the weekend. There was a live piano player, which was great - added to the low-key nature.
The food is excellent / indulgent. Super friendly wait-staff as well. I'd recommend.4/29/2013 12:00:00 AMGo Ahead, You'll Like It.Great spot before a show/performance. Get there a little early because the place gets hoppin'. There were several vegetarian options and my carnivorous friends also found something tasty. Service was good. Bar service was a slow, even when ordering a drink from a table - there is a rush pre and post performances. We will go back. Great spot. The Open Table reservation feature really helped us secure a spot.4/28/2013 12:00:00 AMStill a fun place to go beforeStill a fun place to go before a show. We took our daughters here before their performance at the Symphony and were seated right by the piano player. Our girls loved it. They made requests for songs and the pianist happily accommodated. They had a fabulous time and everyone enjoyed their dinners. It was the perfect atmosphere for our budding singers :)4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMI hear music . . .The pianist is the big draw here! He's absolutely the best which makes for a fabulous dining experience!4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat food and service beforegreat food and service before the ballet as always !4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMFrom 730pm t0 745pm restaurantFrom 730pm t0 745pm restaurant was packed and very loud. I always enjoy eating at Max's restaurants4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMOverall the experience wasOverall the experience was excellent. We will definitely come back. The waiter was great which I feel is important. (Sorry I forgot his name). I would of checked outstanding on the food but they were out of mushrooms for the order we initially wanted, but that didn't affect our overall dining experience. I would definitely recommend Max's to friends & family.

They get us in and out efficiently but we never feel rushed. The weekend prime rib special is a great deal, very tasty! Service is always attentive, speedy, and fun.3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMOur server was Blanca. SheOur server was Blanca. My girlfriend and I both work in the City and
when we want to have a good meal or a cocktail before leaving SF we know Max's will be good.2/14/2013 12:00:00 AMWe ate here before seeingWe ate here before seeing a show at the Orpheum theater with 6 adults and two teenagers. Their menu was diverse enough that it had something for everyone. Their deli sandwiches were great. I split the chicken pot pie with my niece (it was that big) . The food always pleases and the service was okay but not particularly attentive. The desserts looked huge and delicious but we didn't have time to try one.1/5/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were going to Davies SymphonyWe were going to Davies Symphony Hall and needed a place to eat that was both close to the Hall and BART. Max's was perfect for our needs and they were also very conscious of serving us in a timely manner. Food was good and reasonable.11/30/2012 12:00:00 AM
