  • "We've been to Max's a lot over the years and are generally quite pleased with the food and service there. It seems to have its ups and downs. The menu had some changes since last we were there which looked quite positive. There were more healthy, vegetable- and grain-oriented dishes. I had a corned beef sandwich which came with a delicious side salad. The meat was very good! The only downside to the experience was the high volume of noise making conversation nearly impossible. It would be so wonderful if the obnoxious televisions were removed from the restaurant!"

  • "The chicken Cobb salad was very good at Max's Opera Cafe and the rolls are delicious. The host seemed annoyed and a bit distracted and our wait staff was a bit "off," but overall it was a pleasant lunch and I recommend Max's Opera Cafe to anyone shopping at the Stanford Shopping Center. As the restaurant was full at noontime, I strongly recommend that one makes a reservation to avoid a long wait."

  • "proud that the 'menu has changed' Max's is no longer a unique destination with good deli food...out of nostalgia we went to lunch for a good corned beef sandwich and that turned out to be dry and unedibvle..worst, when we complaind the waitperson said "sorry" and drifted away..2 wonderful dishes were no longer on the "new menu...awful experience"

  • "This is one of our favorite spots. Easy restaurant where we can relax, talk and have a good meal. Our service is usually good but this last visit, our service was excellent. It always makes for a pleasant dining experience when the server is friendly and experienced. (And the music was excellent on this night as well)."

  • "Max's Opera Cafe has the best New York style deli food on the Penninsula!"

  • "Had never been to the Max's at Stanforn Mall, Actually had never been to Stanford Mall :). Hooked up with a long time friend that I had lost contact with. She suggested This Max's to meet for an after work catch up fest. Got there early and found out they have this lil farmers Market right outside. Table was ready when I got there and waitress was excellent. We only ordered a few bites off the menu but the were ok. Wings were a little tiny but tasted good. Kale salad was excellent which was a first for me, the kale that is. All in all the place was good, people were pleasant and not that noisy."

  • "We had dinner there on a Friday night with two of our kids, ages 8 and 10. We sat right next to the pianist and thoroughly enjoyed the live music and the food. The kid's desserts were HUGE, which the kids liked, but I thought were too big for them. Would have been good to split one between them."

  • "We enjoyed everything except the performer they had there. It was too loud and we found we had to almost shout to be heard."

  • "Great quick service, food is always flavorful and delicious. The price point and portions are incredible. Enjoy a few drinks from the bar and relax -- the live music is always a plus!"

  • "We go to Max's frequently as our standby for great food and good service. Everything is yummy, but we especially love the pot pies and desserts!"

  • "Friend and I usually would meet at Calif. Café but they are no longer in business. Very sad and sorry about that closing. Hope there will be a chance that they can reopen. Loved their menu and summer outdoor eating and visiting.. Now we have found Max's and we were not disappointed. Food was good except the pastrami could have been leaner but I guess that is what a Rueben is about! Very large portions so 2 people could split some items. Service was good and the restaurant is close to very good shops. I will go back and try to have a table out doors when weather is warm."

  • "My husband and I love Max's. It's charming, cozy and we always have a good, easy time here. The service is great and friendly, though the food is somewhat sub-par. It caters to an older crowd and often has live music. It's a feel-good kind of place."

  • "Extremely loud, tables very close, so crowded, definitely need a reservation. Huge portions, good food."

  • "I go to Max's very regularly...and have never been disappointed up to now: friendly and attentive staff, awesome food (burgers melt in the mouth, fried are crazy, matso balls soup is amazing, great chicken pot pie, huge variety of very good latkes (seasonal), and amazing meat combos (very good..and large portion of meat, good sides and cookies at a really friendly price!). Finally...they make the beeest pecan pies and pumpkin pies I have ever tried....but veery sadly, ONLY AROUND THANKSGIVING! The place itself is very bright, spacious, and I love eating in the booths....so comfortable! Max is maybe slightly more expensive than other equivalent restaurants in town, but definitely worth it: great quality!"

  • "I was very diappointed the last time we were there. The menu is about a quarter the size it used to be and the food quality is uneven. The service is spotty to bad - slow, mistakes, not particularly courteous. My daughters asked for smoothies (no), milk shakes (no), Shirley temples (no) - this is supposed to be like a New York style deli/diner, those items would be standard. The food order was messed up - and slow. Really would not go back any time soon - it is not worth the wait, the prices, the food or the attitude."

  • "A long-time friend and I met for lunch after a 10-year lapse. The waitress was exceptionally kind and tolerant of our extended conversation. I wish I knew her name so I could cite her directly to you. She was more than gracious, boxed the lunch for us when it was time to leave, and was simply wonderful throughout. The atmosphere in the restaurant was lovely, the food was great and beautifully presented, but the waitress made the whole experience absolutely wonderful. In lieu of knowing her name, she was on duty on Tuesday, December 3 at 2:30. She seemed more like a very gracious hostess in her own home than a waitress in a restaurant."

  • "Host was very disorganized and wanted me to wait even though I had reservations. Tables were not cleared and staff didn't seem to know what they were doing."

  • "5 Stars to Open Table for helping us cut through any potential wait on a Friday evening before an event. Unfortunately, while Max's has always been a family favorite this will probably be the last visit we make to Max's. They've taken their great menu and condensed it down to one sheet double sided. The price for the amount served has become quite skewed (I'm all for smaller portions but don't up the prices for them), The food was okay, but nothing truly special. And while the occasional song belted out used to be fun, the lounge act (reasonably good) was too loud to allow any kind of dinner conversation at all. So disappointing..."

  • "I have been a fan of Max's for a long time. My girlfriend and I would come here every Friday night after work for cocktails, the hot dog, and a dessert -- we loved this place! But when I decided to lose my excess weight, my trips to Max's (as well as most restaurants to be honest) decreased to two or three visits a decade. I am happy to report that Max's is still "the spot" for me! I had the 4oz corn beef Rubin -- still yummy after all these years! However, I was really looking forward to the hot dog but, alas, it is no longer on the menu. After losing 70 pounds and cooking for myself 90% of the time, this trip to Max's was really a treat (even though I did not order dessert)."

  • "Good salad and my friend said the Texas beef was very good. Service was fine, but not very friendly or attentive; after meals were served, the server walked away without a word and did not realize that one of the guests was without silverware. We had to track down a server to ask for something, and he never returned with it, so we had to ask again. It just seemed that the staff were very busy and/or preoccupied. We would return for a quick dinner, but not for a special occasion."

  • "Max's Opera House is lively. The musical performer was awesome with his variety of songs from toe tapping then opera. I enjoyed the new beef meal with sweet potato fries and kale coleslaw."

  • "Max's at Stanford Shopping Center contiues to give good food at good prices. Have noticed, however, that the menu has shrunk considerably. Our server this time was excellent: she was attentive, polite, and eager to please. Noise level inside the restaurant becomes energetic when the piano/singing begins."

  • "The waiter was inattentive and not any help when asked for a strawberry drink that was on the menu, but unavailable. The bar-tender suggested another drink that was not very tasty. I listed this as child friendly because there were nosey children there whose parents didn't try to control."
