  • "I recommend Max's to everyone and have been several times. I met a friend to catch up last Saturday night for dinner. The reservation process was easy and our table was ready. Our waitress didn't check on us that often and by the time she asked if I wanted another beer, we were paying the check. I would've like another 30 minutes prior, but she didn't come back to check on us until it was time to give us the check. It seemed it took a while for us to get our food. When it finally came, the waitress told me that my steak was cooked incorrectly and had to be redone. That's perfectly acceptable and appreciated, but it would have been nice to know that as an explanation for the wait beforehand."

  • "My second visit--both for lunch--was even better than the first. We sat upstairs "outdoors." The oyster stew was much improved with the addition of oysters. Our server was the best (round, tortoise shell glasses). It was my friend's birthday and she was equally pleased. I'll be back!"

  • "I can only give Max's 3 stars. The food was fantastic, the table and bar service were ok, but we weren't seated until 40 minutes after our reservation. Initially we were told it would only be a 5 to 10 min wait, if we had known it was going to be so busy that they weren't honoring reservations we would have gone somewhere else. Because of this experience I don't think I will go back at least until they have the front of house management under control."

  • "I made a reservation, upon arrival was escorted to a table that was against at the kitchen door. Not only should I not have been asked to sit there…no one should! When the average price of an entree is about 30 dollars everyone should have a good seat. The next place I was seated was at a table for six, which was too big for our party of 3. After being seated a lady came over and tried to ask questions they clearly indicated they didn't even understand what had transpired. It seems obvious to me that everyone is trying to sit upstairs at the open air tables and not always is there room and has it been organized to seat accordingly."

Server was friendly and eager but lacked finesse--all courses overlapped one another with those awkward moments where you're all scrambling to move plates and salad bowls to accommodate more flatware."

  • "Had a wonderful dinner at Max's. True flavor of Belgian bistro. Extensive list of belgian beers on tap and by the bottle. Many entrees also Belgian influenced. Started with a bibb lettuce wedge. Nicely presented and dressed. I enjoyed the tile fish while my guest had grilled shrimp over a Cesar salad. Only negative was the scalloped potato dish; they were unevenly cut, and therefore unevenly cooked."

  • "Service was a little slow but the food was very good. We weren't in a hurry. The bread was excellent. The menu has a wide variety of items so everyone can find something. The menu could stand to be pared down a bit to give it more identity. Is it Belgian? Is it French? Is it American? It was a bit overwhelming. The cut of steak for the steak frites was a bit fatty but other than that, it was generally very good. They should consider a different type of blind upstairs as the sun was too much too take at one point."

  • "My wife took me here for my birthday and we both loved it. Since it was a special occasion, we ate and drank a little more than usual which gave us an opportunity to try more of the food. The appetizers, entrees and desserts were all delicious and they were able to suggest a nice wine based on our description of what we like. Also loved the valet parking. That made it easy to get in and out. When we finished dinner, our car was waiting for us. I've already started recommending Max's to friends."

  • "I was anxious to try Max's as I had heard mixed things since their opening. Charcuterie platter offered an extensive selection of meats and cheeses; escargots were delicious, on par with what I'd expect dining out in Paris; bosc pear salad left something to be desired as the greens were a bit dry and the pear was plainly sliced and laid out across the top with a rather small amount of cheese; the duck breast was cooked perfectly and had an outstanding sauce. Unfortunately we were too full to enjoy dessert, but I'll be sure to save room next time. The pace of service was nice, however the food all came out quite quickly and more time between courses would have been appreciated. Our server was very pleasant and had exemplary menu knowledge."

  • "After a disappointing dinner here a week earlier, we decided to try lunch to see if this would be a change for the better. It was not. Max's is an inviting place with a great location and view of the area from the second level, and nicely decorated. The menu offers a wide range of selections, and the wine list is quite extensive. Our wait staff was very warm and courteous, but was unsure of some menu details and overlooked missing side orders. The kitchen has problems. Whether it's substandard vegetable quality in a salad or skimpy ingredients in a watery soup, or extremely overcooked entrees, you will find little proximity to fine dining, although the pricing is there. The calamari was the exception, and actually exceeded expectations."

  • "Fabulous atmosphere but.....had to wait 30 minutes for our 7:30 reservation; waiter inattentive and got order wrong...instead of apologizing, he obviously lied and tried to cover it up; food was good, but not great and looked like it was thrown on the plate; very slow service; and finally, they "lost" our car - it took 20 minutes to get our car from valet - we were the only ones waiting. Very disappointed overall. It was a very busy Saturday night, and the restaurant is somewhat new - will give it some time before trying it again."

We had tried to visit Max's once before without a reservation, which turns out to be a necessity for the weekends. Our wait was well worth it! We got a great table by the window upstairs and had a fabulous evening. It was truly a dining experience to remember. The food was spectacular, especially the Filet Mignon with lump crab. The beer selection, as promised, was a superb collection of some of Belgium's best. The service was also wonderful - Ahmad was very patient with us and had great suggestions.   • "This is the only restaurant in the Richmond metro area that can pair a wonderful beer with delicious food. We left the decision to Austin, our server and a bartender, who did not disappoint. Not only was the pairing perfect, but the education behind why the pairing was made and approved by both Austin and the Chef was even better. The is our second visit and we will be coming back for a third soon. The staff is incredible...down to Liz, the general manager, who comes by the table near the end of your dinner to ensure all was satisfactory. Please try this wonderful establishment...you will not be sorry!"

  • "Last night we ate at Max's on Broad and had a very good meal. After ordering the salads, we settled down to enjoy our wine; unfortunately this was not to happen. The salads arrived about five minutes after ordering them. Then there was a wait of well over 30 minutes for our main courses; this is when we enjoyed our wine. Again, unfortunately, we wanted another glass but our server was no where to be seen. We ended up having to ask about our main courses and were told that there was a big party upstairs and the kitchen was slammed. With a curt "sorry about that," she disappeared again but at least now we had our wine! Give this place a couple of months to work the quirks out and then enjoy, enjoy, enjoy."

  • "The hardest part about this dinning experience was trying to settle on what to order! I had the short ribs and loved them. My friend had one of the fish dishes and it was amazing. We split the roast cauliflower appetizer and ate every bite! Our waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable. Loved the atmosphere of this place! Will definitely go back!!"
