Diner Reviews
  • "We love eating at Max's; it's a warm and friendly."

  • "Our menu choices were excellent. One order of Rockefeller oysters and pear/arugula salads were very tasty. The main courses were beautifully presented and provided a variety of flavors that enhanced each of the plates. Desserts were out of the ordinary--apple strudel prepared in the "Belgian way." Valet parking for dinner and the nearby theatre was a valued bonus."

  • "I don't know if it's the acoustics of the building but the 2-hour dinner was quite a disaster when we were unable to carry on a conversation. My dad is hard of hearing and didn't enjoy the dinner at all due to the noise. Other than that, the new waiter forgot dishes, they were supposed to bring out a candle for his birthday, but his attitude was great. One of my biggest pet peeves is when my entree comes out before I'm even finished with my appetizer and/or salad, this is a huge faux pas in the dining scene & I didn't even get to finish my salad because they took our plates up. Overall, the food was good, I'll give it another try to see if the kinks have been cleared up, just surprised that this now established restaurant had these issues."

  • "The food was delicious and the portions were large. The service was exceptional, as well. We will definitely return."

  • "My Mom and I went for a very late brunch. The decor is delightful - French Belgium... more subtle than Le Diplomat in DC but similar in that they really try to take you across the pond to the continent. The food was wonderful. I had the chilled carrot ginger soup which was exquisite and the French Dip... also flawless. Mom had chicken crepes which were creamy and smooth bites of comfort food. The Bloody Mary was traditional - not packed with loads of seeds and seasonings - celery and lime garnish, perfect. This will be my Mom's and my new go to place (was Mosaic / Azzuro)."

  • "I took my step children and girl friend to Max not knowing what to expect other than some reviews that I read. Upon entering we where greeted with smiles and welcomes. Our table was upstairs which was perfect. The atmosphere was energetic and once your eyes settle past the vast presence of the room and layout you began to notice very special features and items throughout the place. After settling in to our seats friendly staff members kept us busy with information, answers and lots of smiles. Half of us accepted the chiefs suggestions and the other ventured into other delightful menu items. Bottom line the food was suburb. Comparable to restaurants we have enjoyed in NYC. We will be back many many times. My children go to VCU."

  • "We had an early Sunday evening dinner consisting of the Organic Salmon Napoleon and a new dish called the Cappelini (sp?) consisting of scallops, shrimp, and mushrooms over pasta with a fantastic sauce on top. The presentation of both dishes was excellent and they were over the top in the tasting category also. We shared each other's dishes and we had the same opinion of both - awesome!! We also shared a bread pudding topped with caramel sauce for dessert, which was also excellent. The dinner, paired with the prompt and knowledgeable service was an evening to remember."

  • "My second visit, and even better than the first time ...excellent menu, my table had ahi tuna, grilled cheese, and a Belgian stew and everyone loved it. Very nice "global" wine and beer list and both visits my 20-somethings tagging along tried craft cocktails and thought they were excellent. The customer service is outstanding - manager and servers alike - the owner greeted us last visit and made the rounds throughout both floors. It's a gorgeous redone space in an up and coming part of Richmond - try it. Valet parking makes it even easier. Do make a reservation!!"

  • "My husband and I went for their Sunday brunch! We enjoyed our food and the surrounding atmosphere. Our waitress was polite, very accomodating and seemed to enjoy working there. Our wait time for food, drink, etc. were low to moderate. All around an enjoyable place to get some awesome food!"
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "The food was fine and the view from the upstairs window was quite nice. The waitress needed a tad more training--she kept coming back to take our order when we were not ready to order. Since the restaurant was not crowded, I am not sure why she was so persistent. If I had to change one thing, I would make the menu smaller in size and more manageable to hold."

  • "Had dinner at Max's for the first time. I ordered the trout with lump crab. It was very tasty, however they skimped on the lump crab. I had 3 pieces. The service was good and the atmosphere good as well. The restaurant is set up nicely and I would go back again but order something else on the menu. There are many options on the menu."

  • "Wow, live, neat and fun. We had dinner upstairs with big windows. The place is hopping but that is because the food is sooo good. The chief brought out our food and thanked us for dining. We saw a lot of people we knew and the wait staff was very attentive. We are definatly going back again to share with friends. The beer selection, wine selection, the assortment of food on the menu, it is truly worth visiting. We will be going back."

  • "If not for the noise level it would have been the best dining experience I've had in a long time. However we could not have any conversation with our friends. It made for a somewhat disappointing evening."

  • "I have been wanting to try Max's on Broad for several months and it was well worth the wait. Cannot wait to go back. Wonderful menu!!"

  • "From the hostess to the bartender to the server to the chef I love Max's!! They always have a drink special and their "specials" aren't just one or two items and only entrees. On this visit I tried beer braised short ribs they were so tender I didn't even need a knife & Hayman Sweet Potatoes which are suppose to be native to Virginia (I've never heard of them) they were delicious!!!"

  • "We went to Max's on Broad for Father's Day and had a fabulous brunch! The food was delicious and the portions are large (we had quiche, omelets, eggs w pancakes). The ambience is lovely and if you are lucky enough to sit upstairs, there is a nice view of Adam St from the wall of windows. Parking is not a problem as the valet is at the front door and your car will be waiting for you when you step outside!! We will definitely revisit Max's on Broad!!"

  • "The food was great. We had a reservation for 6 (2 adult 4 children) and were seated right away. The service was good."

  • "One of the best brunch menus and the food was superb. The staff was very friendly, open, welcoming, and helpful. We will be back to try dinner in the near future."

  • "We enjoyed a terrific brunch at Max's for Father's Day. The short rib hash is fabulous! Service was timely and friendly, all our meals were delicious, and we really loved the casual atmosphere. Perfect brunch if you, like we, have become bored by dressing up for the same old dull brunch buffet."

  • "We enjoyed this meal. love the space, although at times a bit loud. Good food and wine selections, and the bread and outine enough to come back for alone."

  • "First time in this new Belgian restaurant. Booked but had to wait at bar ~15 minutes, which is the only gripe about service, and it was Friday night. Fabulous selection of Belgian beers on tap, so I didn't look at the wine list. Soup & steak frites were excellent, cooked rare as ordered."

  • "First time there. Took my daughter for her Birthday. We had Jeremy as our waiter. Awesome, personal, checked on us frequently but not too much. Can't wait to go again. Would recommend Jeremy and the restaurant and food/presentation.When we were leaving we passed 4 different wait staff and they all smiled and said something nice to us. We both commented on how nice that made us feel. A wonderful dining experience!"

  • "We went to Max's for my fiance's birthday and had a great time! The food was absolutely delicious and we sat on the second floor at a small table overlooking the restaurant and broad street. Our waiter was great - knowledgeable, funny, and around just enough if we needed him. The restaurant itself is so cool inside. I had a papardelle pasta with beef and he had a steak with gorgonzola cheese glaze - YUM! Oh and the nutella gelato is amazing - I couldn't get enough. I would definitely recommend this place."

  • "Our dining experience was perfect. From the efficient and friendly valet parking, welcoming hostess, prompt and knowledgeable wait staff, the offerings on the food and drink menus to the quality and taste of the food we were exceptionally pleased. Standouts were the crusty bread, soft shell crab and the salads. We have to go back and sample the desserts, there was no room for it this time."

  • "This was our third trip and its a wow every time!! So start with the the our front valey parking which is great, especially if you are running late, and think you cannot find a space. The greet staff is always friendly, even without a reservation (but you really should call ahead to get your time slot), Each time has been a different taste and the menu changes enough to keep you coming back. Be sure to take a walk back by the kitchen to really appreciate the chef staff. The wine list is great and the wait staff can help you compliment the tasty dishes that keep coming out."

  • "From the moment I walked in, I loved the energy of the restaurant. The Maitre D' was most delightful and set the tone for a great dining experience - he made me feel so welcome, like I was meeting a group of friends and family for dinner! Food, drinks, ambiance were all spectacular. I can't want to go back."

  • "This was our second time at the restaurant. We asked for a quiet place and were well accommodated. Food was great - menu is unique to Richmond. It's a small point, but free valet parking is a real plus"

  • "Had heard wonderful things about Max's and they are true! Now my new favorite restaurant in Richmond!"
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "Another great Richmond find. The menu is an epicurean delight, with an extensive wine list. Attentive, but not frenetic service. Delightful 19th century atmosphere. Enjoy! "

  • "We celebrated a birthday dinner at Max's on Tuesday and it was our first visit there. On Sunday I had another birthday to celebrate and the place where the birthday person wanted to close thankfully I suggested Max's and I went again and I can't wait to go again. Food was delious the Poutine has become a favorite of mine!!"

  • "Really wonderful experience, great food, extraordinary service. Really extraordinary service at all levels from Steven the manager to Nick our waiter; got their names so I would remember for next time we visit. Was our first visit, had best table in the house, upstairs in the corner by the window, just a beautiful place, and memorable anniversary dinner. Wife had the veal chop...YUM. I had the salmon napoleon, also great. "

  • "I found this restaurant when planning a surprise birthday vacation for my boyfriend, based my decision on reviews, and was not disappointed. We were greeted and escored to our table by the manager, our server was amazing, and the food was impeccable! ! Will return when in richmond! "

  • "We were there for our anniversary and it was a night to remember. The food and wine were fabulous but on of my favorite things was the seat by the window. But we have come before and every seat is great!"

  • "Adorable restaurant. Menu looks fantastic. Proteins were great, but sides were an after thought. Expensive for what you get. I'll give it one more try. "

  • "First time there and overall good. Atmosphere great, decent wine list, oysters Rockefeller great, fish of the day great, crab cake good, scallops overcooked, sautéed spinach way too garlicky and mashed potatoes bland and very starchy. Told our server about the scallops so hopefully they will work on them. May give it another try."

  • "We took out of town guests for dinner; had excellent waiter and very good food with a few minor issues; my foie gras way over done; it was promptly replaced by the kitchen with a perfectly prepared foie; one guest ordered the rock fish but was actually served the monkfish; but it was excellent and she had no complaints. Obviously the other diner who received her rockfish could not tell the difference. We had an excellent time; also enjoyed the wine list."

  • "This was our first visit and everything was great! The menu selections were varied and appealing. Definitely must return! The food was served hot and was as tasty as it looked. Service was wonderful. We were seated next to a window upstairs and we felt like we were outside without being on the sidewalk. Valet parking is a bonus! We're eager to return for dinner!"

  • "Our party of five had a ball, loved the food, enjoyed the decor, were well-attended by the wait staff. Charming place, all loved it. We were leaving as the noise level was rising. Probably becomes deafening later in the evening. "
