  • "We drove in heavy traffic from Woodbridge, VA to go back to Max's. We went last Christmas time with some friends and really enjoyed it. This time however, not so much. The service was very good but the food was disappointing. My wife ordered a strip steak, but it had the texture and flavor of a sirloin. Her escargot was bland and tasted of an oil rather than butter and garlic. I had the poutine and braised short ribs. The ribs tasted ok but not great. The poutine was good. The best part of the evening was the beer. Overall we were disappointed given the trouble we went to go again. I hope it was an off day for the kitchen crew and not a trend."

  • "What most restaurants don't understand is that "service" shouldn't be limited to a table's one specific "server". Everyone (and we mean everyone) in this place was friendly, helpful and attentive. The hosts/hostesses, owner, bartenders, servers, bus people... every single person spoke to us and made it a memorable, unique experience. Our specific server was in fact friendly and attentive too, but it takes a village to make an impression like this, and Max's nailed it. The beer list was huge and the food menu was full of yummy sounding options, so we were not disappointed. We were in Richmond for the weekend for a wedding and we choose Max's for dinner based on other people's Open Table reviews... we suggest you do the same :)"

  • "I've given this place another chance - the food is great, but the noise is so loud. The acoustics don't work well. My friend and I could hardly hear each other talk, we both felt as though we were screaming to hear each other at lunchtime. Next time, we'll sit downstairs."

  • "I had lunch there a few weeks ago and had the BEST waitress and 3 out of the 4 of us loved the food (quiche with crab & gruyere).... this time for dinner.... Noise level (upstairs and down) was VERY loud (all those hard/tile surfaces I guess) to the point that I had to move to the seat next to my friend vs across the table... and that didn't work either. Service wasn't good. Chandler was hard to find and don't remember much about him. Wine was a hassle to order (no waiter - he dashed in/out/away). Bread came late and wasn't good nor was the oil dip (no taste) despite my memory that it was "to die for" when I was there before. The entrees -Chicken/ Pork Chop- were ladened with sauce! I thought I was back in WI/Cleveland - unmemorable."

  • "It has been a long time since we have had such a hard time choosing what to order. The brunch menu is loaded with wonderful choices. We will have to keep coming back in order to try everything. We have had two great dinner experiences and now an exceptional brunch one. Probably the best brunch in Richmond. Fast becoming our favorite restaurant ( dinner and brunch) and a first choice to take out of town guests as well as local friends and special occasions. Staff is friendly and service perfect. Great ambience- sat by the window upstairs."

  • "We were in Richmond for a couple of nights and stumbled upon Max's the 1st night to have a quick drink. We ended up staying 3. The service is great and the ambience is awesome. We liked it so much we decided to come back the next night to have dinner. The dinner did not disappoint and was excellent. I would highly recommend you try Max's"

  • "We'd heard great things about Max's, so we took my in-laws for dinner. We made a reservation for 7 pm on a Saturday, forgetting about the theatergoers that usually crowd that area at that time. We ended up waiting 30 min for our table, which was in a rather noisy area. In other situations, this could be frustrating. But the staff was so apologetic and proactive about updating us, we were happy to stand and chat and watch amazing dishes go by. We loved the beer and wine list - my husband particularly enjoyed the Scotch de Silly ale. Our waiter, Tim, gave fantastic recommendations. The appetizers were just the right sizes, and our entrees were all outstanding. We'll probably request an upstairs table, but there will DEFINITELY be a next time!"

  • "Arrived for 8:00 PM reservation seated on time. Slow start with waiter and a good 10 mins before drinks arrived. Food arrived an hour and 20 mins later. Not good. All employees who touched base promised an excellent meal when it arrived. Food not worth the wait or cost. Food delivered and we were asked if he could get us anything? What red wine do you have by the glass? I have no idea! Well wine arrived by time dinner was about gone. Ordered dessert . We got one we never ordered . Good, not at all what we ordered...waiters response " oh I'm so sorry".. You would think one of all those employees who thought that it was always "excellent there" would compensate for this. Oh, and we were asked if we got 2 or 3 soft shells we got 1 for $28.00."

  • "It was a wonderful dining experience from the moment we walked in. We loved the atmosphere and were immediately greeted with warm welcomes and happy anniversary wishes. Our server was polite and very helpful without being overbearing. The food and wine was magnificent! My wife's scallops were cooked perfectly and my duck breast in the cherry bourban sauce was delicious and lively. The chocolate mousse finished things off exactly as they began. A perfect summer dining experience with the one I love!"

  • "Our menu choices were excellent. One order of Rockefeller oysters and pear/arugula salads were very tasty. The main courses were beautifully presented and provided a variety of flavors that enhanced each of the plates. Desserts were out of the ordinary--apple strudel prepared in the "Belgian way." Valet parking for dinner and the nearby theatre was a valued bonus."

  • "I don't know if it's the acoustics of the building but the 2-hour dinner was quite a disaster when we were unable to carry on a conversation. My dad is hard of hearing and didn't enjoy the dinner at all due to the noise. Other than that, the new waiter forgot dishes, they were supposed to bring out a candle for his birthday, but his attitude was great. One of my biggest pet peeves is when my entree comes out before I'm even finished with my appetizer and/or salad, this is a huge faux pas in the dining scene & I didn't even get to finish my salad because they took our plates up. Overall, the food was good, I'll give it another try to see if the kinks have been cleared up, just surprised that this now established restaurant had these issues."

  • "My Mom and I went for a very late brunch. The decor is delightful - French Belgium... more subtle than Le Diplomat in DC but similar in that they really try to take you across the pond to the continent. The food was wonderful. I had the chilled carrot ginger soup which was exquisite and the French Dip... also flawless. Mom had chicken crepes which were creamy and smooth bites of comfort food. The Bloody Mary was traditional - not packed with loads of seeds and seasonings - celery and lime garnish, perfect. This will be my Mom's and my new go to place (was Mosaic / Azzuro)."

  • "I took my step children and girl friend to Max not knowing what to expect other than some reviews that I read. Upon entering we where greeted with smiles and welcomes. Our table was upstairs which was perfect. The atmosphere was energetic and once your eyes settle past the vast presence of the room and layout you began to notice very special features and items throughout the place. After settling in to our seats friendly staff members kept us busy with information, answers and lots of smiles. Half of us accepted the chiefs suggestions and the other ventured into other delightful menu items. Bottom line the food was suburb. Comparable to restaurants we have enjoyed in NYC. We will be back many many times. My children go to VCU."

  • "My second visit, and even better than the first time ...excellent menu, my table had ahi tuna, grilled cheese, and a Belgian stew and everyone loved it. Very nice "global" wine and beer list and both visits my 20-somethings tagging along tried craft cocktails and thought they were excellent. The customer service is outstanding - manager and servers alike - the owner greeted us last visit and made the rounds throughout both floors. It's a gorgeous redone space in an up and coming part of Richmond - try it. Valet parking makes it even easier. Do make a reservation!!"

  • "The food was fine and the view from the upstairs window was quite nice. The waitress needed a tad more training--she kept coming back to take our order when we were not ready to order. Since the restaurant was not crowded, I am not sure why she was so persistent. If I had to change one thing, I would make the menu smaller in size and more manageable to hold."

  • "We had an early Sunday evening dinner consisting of the Organic Salmon Napoleon and a new dish called the Cappelini (sp?) consisting of scallops, shrimp, and mushrooms over pasta with a fantastic sauce on top. The presentation of both dishes was excellent and they were over the top in the tasting category also. We shared each other's dishes and we had the same opinion of both - awesome!! We also shared a bread pudding topped with caramel sauce for dessert, which was also excellent. The dinner, paired with the prompt and knowledgeable service was an evening to remember."

The service was good and the atmosphere good as well. The restaurant is set up nicely and I would go back again but order something else on the menu. There are many options on the menu."

  • "Wow, live, neat and fun. We had dinner upstairs with big windows. The place is hopping but that is because the food is sooo good. The chief brought out our food and thanked us for dining. We saw a lot of people we knew and the wait staff was very attentive. We are definatly going back again to share with friends. The beer selection, wine selection, the assortment of food on the menu, it is truly worth visiting. We will be going back."

  • "From the hostess to the bartender to the server to the chef I love Max's!! They always have a drink special and their "specials" aren't just one or two items and only entrees. On this visit I tried beer braised short ribs they were so tender I didn't even need a knife & Hayman Sweet Potatoes which are suppose to be native to Virginia (I've never heard of them) they were delicious!!!"

  • "We went to Max's on Broad for Father's Day and had a fabulous brunch! The food was delicious and the portions are large (we had quiche, omelets, eggs w pancakes). The ambience is lovely and if you are lucky enough to sit upstairs, there is a nice view of Adam St from the wall of windows. Parking is not a problem as the valet is at the front door and your car will be waiting for you when you step outside!! We will definitely revisit Max's on Broad!!"
