Food always excellent and always new specials. However for me the Elk Osso Buco was way too tough and unchewable. Win some lose some! Other three friends had excellent meals as usual.

My wife and I visited Max's on Broad for a celebratory dinner just the two of us. Walking in we were greeted by the hostess and told them of our reservations, just a couple minute wait for our reservation table at 7:30pm on a Friday night. Several reservations in front of us and a few walk ins waiting around the bar. Ther really wasn't a great place to wait without being in the way of the staff unfortunately. After following the host up the stairs to our table we were amazed by how tiny this place is inside. It's in a little corner space on a building, windows all along the long side of the triangle. The noise level was a bit high, even though we could both notice a lot of acoustic dampening attempts in the ceiling, likely trying to curb that noise level. We both ordered a mixed drink along with an appetizer of the grilled octopus. Drinks came back quickly and delicious and the octopus followed shortly. It was tender and had good flavor, although we have had grilled baby octopus in the past we still preferred. We ordered 3 entrees to share because we were celebrating and why not! The braised short rib ravioli was the best, little pockets of rib happiness with a light but creamy sauce on top, the duck breast had an amazing flavor with the sweetness of the cherries, however we wished the fat was rendered a little more, and I would have enjoyed a little crispness on the fat side as well. Finally, one of the specials that I personally was drooling over since I read about it was the Elk Osso Buco, it had a delicious flavor, almost like beef except richer, I wouldn't even describe it as gamy. It was great although I wish it was a bit more tender around the bone. The outsides were good, but the inside, I don't know if it's because the meat is so tender or if it could use more time braising. Overall we will definitely be coming back as the experience was great and everything on the menu and being delivered to our neighboring tables looked fantastic.

This is our second time at Max's... The first time was in the summer for dinner. We sat upstairs in the corner which gave a group a bit of privacy. The large menu allowed each of us to chose a special dish which made everyone happy! The server was knowledgeable and prompt. Our second visit was for brunch...Again we sat upstairs (requested in our reservation) and although the restaurant was full, the meal was intimate. Service was excellent. We especially loved the small touches like the petite, warm muffins that were served while we waited! Yum! Can't wait to go back!

  • Max's lives up to the Richmond Magazine reviews!

We don't mind venturing to the downtown area for dinner from our cozy, yet restaurant predictable Far West end home but it makes it a far better experience when the restaurant lives up to the Richmond Magazine reviews. Max's is located on a busy corner on East Broad and Adams but the corner cuts in at a diagonal so it is easy to get to the Valet stand which is one of the first features that we like as it is not easy to park in that part of town (remember, we live in the west end and stink at parallel). Our table was on the second floor (which I recommend) overlooking the busy corner which added to the fun and bustling atmosphere. It was our second time at Max's so we knew the seafood options would be plentiful - another great reason to go to this restaurants as there aren't many with such fresh and large seafood entrée selections. The table started their meal with the bacon wrapped scallops and I tried the octopus salad (another hard to find plate unless you go to Stella's). It was perfectly cooked (tender and sweet) and paired nicely with the arugula salad. For entrees I had the Covina on butternut squash risotto. Tender white fish with the creamy risotto - delicious. My husband and friend had one of the fish selections from the daily menu (Borodino, or something like that) and they both loved it - that one was served with potatoes and seasonal veggies. Another friend enjoyed the short ribs. The dessert was one of my favorites as well - brioche bread pudding with vanilla ice cream. Having cravings for it as I write this. Also have to mention the abundant bread that is brought to the table is crunchy and soft in the middle. The service was excellent - we had a lot of questions and indecisive what to order (another good sign when there are so many delicious choices) and our server gave great recommendations. Our table was a little hidden from the rest of the restaurant but we didn't feel forgotten. We are looking forward to going back.

Loved this place. Went after the Richmond 1/2 marathon and wanted a place not packed with runners. Menu is outstanding with a great variety of dishes. Brunch, lunch, specials, etc... Took the kids and everyone was able to find something they wanted. Wine list is extensive and reasonable. They have about a dozen draft Belgian ales on the menu. Service was top notch. Drinks were always full. There is a bar area and I believe it would be a great place to eat solo at the bar. I will certainly be back!

We had the oysters with pearls (caviar), meatloaf, and a nicoise salad. The tuna on the salad was medium rare as I ordered and it was so good. The meatloaf with asparagus and mashed potatoes was tasty and plentiful. The gravy on all was very good. Will definitely be back!

This was the third time we went to Max's. The past two experiences were not so hot but we were willing to try again and hope they had gotten their act together. This was not the case. We had a 7:30 reservation and finally got seated an hour later. By then, we were all very hungry and very annoyed. They sat us at a table they "made up" which was so close to the people next to us we could not move. They moved us to another table upstairs which was much better. By then, one of my party had enough and left the restaurant. The rest of us ordered our food. The waiter was very good and understanding. The food came out and again I could not enjoy it because the batter on my fish and chips was so salty I could not eat it. At that point we just wanted to finish and leave. They say the third time is a charm, but not for this restaurant. We will not return. What a shame! The atmosphere is nice and a great location. They need to fire the chef and manager. They are going for a higher quality product than Tarrant's but they fail miserably!!

This newer restaurant is fabulous...despite the difficulty in parking, the food is fabulous...The staff is great, attentive yet not too hovering. The cocktails are lovely and there is a wide variety of choices. But the real attraction is the location. You feel as if you are taken to a small bistro in Paris for the afternoon or evening. It is lovely. I love any place that has fois gras on the menu. I can't wait to go and sit upstairs and have a lovely meal when it snows.

Not sure if there was a kitchen issue but our brunch took an INCREDIBLY long time to reach the table (breakfast poutine, Benedict, omelette, kids pancake- so nothing too unusual). Maybe the 2nd plate of biscuits after 20+ minutes should have tipped us off that it would be awhile longer. Tables around us ordered after and received food before us. Then when food finally arrived the kids pancake was randomly still not done. They gave her a Belgian waffle to tide her over. Appreciate that effort but strange. We were not in a hurry, so the wait was ok, but we were famished for sure. Service was friendly but an explanation would have been nice. They made a kids pancake for us even though it wasn't on the menu- appreciate that.

I hope this was just a fluke, but nothing went well there on Saturday night before the show, except a glass of Malbec. Something about the reservation system duplicating themselves...Open Table's fault?? Way too many people at one time for such a small kitchen. Salads were timely, but way over dressed, then a hour wait for entree. Her rockfish was nothing...a thin, golf ball size peice and my duck was tasty, but no crispy skin and just 4 slices....Would have said something, but did not have the staff nor the time available since we were now late for show. Definately not going to push my luck there unless the whole night is open. Place has potential, but they may be more about getting the $$ when they can versus the guest experience.

While obviously over-appreciated on a bustling Saturday night prior to a major Broadway play, the staff handled the elbow to elbow waiting diners with grace and attentiveness. Those obviously dining after the matinee' lounged while those anxious to be seated so as not to be late to the show hovered at the entrance, looming over the staff. Max's on Broad took it in the chin, but took it all in stride. The staff had our party of 6 pre-order while waiting so that as soon as we could be seated, they could bring out our meals. During the brief wait at the table we ordered a bottle of wine for the table and a couple of mixed drinks. Our meals were all delicious. Knowing we were in a hurry, the owner comped our table. We will be back.

As requested, we sat upstairs in a booth which was comfortable for four people. The decor is nicely done--wall of windows, nice "subdued rustic" feel. We were not in a hurry, having already enjoyed the matinee at the Altria. The waiter (and kitchen) were relieved as they had to satisfy several diners going to the evening performance. The atmosphere is lively. Waitstaff is attentive and friendly. The menu is extensive--something to please everyone. We all enjoyed our drinks and meals. When we left, our friend summed it up by saying she felt it was "dining" as opposed to hurry up and eat restaurants.

We've been three times. The interior of the place is gorgeous- the bar especially. The owner told me once that he brought architectural pieces down from an old building in new York. Beer and wine list is very good. Everything you want and nothing you don't. And very reasonably priced. The food runs the gamut from very good to "meh." Steer clear of any fish dish unless you like it over cooked. Meat is the way to go. Especially the lamb and osso bucco. The service is lopsided. This last time killed the idea of ever going back. The owner jammed our party of 6 into a corner with two mismatched two-tops mashed together and acted like we should be grateful to have a spot at all when we asked for something roomier. Try it once. Maybe.

We had an excellent meal, the waiter was there when needed, wine selection was awesome. We had an awesome time and will return very soon! We had an after dinner drink downstairs at the bar and enjoyed the camaraderie before taking a taxi back to the West End.

The service was wonderful and the atmosphere was great. The food, for the most part, was average. The fish in the fish and chips was too salty and the fries were room temperature. My husband ordered the burger and fries. He said the burger was a frozen patty and was not good. His fries were also served at room temperature. My daughter was very happy with her appetizer of beef carpaccio and her dinner of short rib ravioli. The ravioli was the best meal ordered.

I'm glad we eat early, by the time we left the place was packed with not an "open table" to be seen. The lamb was suculent, I would get it again! Our dining companions had the salmon napoleon - I am definitely going back for that. The only negatives was the beer was super expensive and it is rather noisy.

I could come every single day and have a different Belgium Beer and Mussels & Frites. However, the noise level is way too high! Friends came on Sat, 10-18-14 by 10 pm closed! Really! Restaurant of that quality and location, it should be open late nights, especially on nights with major acts at CenterStage, Altria, Siegel Center, VAREP, etc. On a Saturday night especially one should still be able to get a table and food items at least until 11:30 pm if shows let out at 11 pm! Come'on! Ted & Frances know what they are doing; they have done their research and all their homework. I want to support and in fact, patronize a restauranteur like that. Don't ruin a good thing, by not-so-small details like hours!

What a treat. Went here with 2 new friends during restaurant week, always a dicey proposition because of the crowds. The place was jammed but the service was excellent. The crowd made for a festive atmosphere. We ordered off the regular menu. One of the best things about Max's is that the menu it intelligible. Everything fresh and tasty but none of the bleeping farm to table, artisanal nonsense you get everywhere nowadays. Beautifully designed space. The place runs like a well oiled machine. If Max's were a NY borough, it would be the Manhattan to the hipster Brooklyn pretense of nearly every other decent restaurant in Richmond. Free valet parking? Of course but bring cash to tip the driver.

From the moment we were greeted @ the door, our experience was one to remember. We were quickly seated at one of the premier tables along the windows on the second floor, promptly served water & toasty bread with a sundried tomatoe infused oil, and had our first round of cocktails, all within 15 minutes. Our salads, soup, entrees and dinner wine arrived in perfect succession and all were brilliantly tasty!! It is one of our new favorites and we cannot wait to return to try brunch!

We dined at Max's on Broad during Richmond Restaurant Week during Fall 2014 and were so impressed that this spot has rocketed up near the top of our short list for great places for celebrations or special occasions. The service here was incredibe - very knowledgeable staff, who had great recommendations. The food was very, very good and I cannot express how delicious the Pork Osso Bucco was; the Salmon Napoleon was fantastically delicious as well - and a hint for those in the know, you can ask for additional lobster fennel cream sauce for the napoleon and rice pilaf, which I absolutely insist you do. Lastly, we ordered the French Riesling on their menu and it was far and above the best Riesling I've ever tasted. Wonderful experience!!

Went for restaurant week and the service and food were excellent. Portions were very large (pork osso buco was massive!) which was great. Would definitely recommend.

A great find! Our friends have been saying great things about this restaurant. It exceeded our expectations! Delicious, creative, and quality ingredients. My only complaint is that the tables are too close together. Conversations from neighboring tables were often interruptions.

We were recommended by multiple friends to this restaurant. Unfortunately we either picked a bad night or the restaurant is no longer meeting the needs of its customers. From poor service throughout the meal and receiving cold, under cooked mediocre food we were very disappointed. For the amount of money we spent, we expected so much more. And yes, it was restaurant week - no excuses.

Went here for restaurant week. We both had excellent meals. I had the pork and it was very large portion and cooked perfectly. My friend had the roasted chicken which was also very good. The dessert was amazing. Homemade s'mores and the Apple crisp. Will definitely be back!
