Diner Reviews
  • "I have been going to Max's for while now. (Since Restaurant Week in 2009) The menu has gradually changed over the years and all the new items have become personal favorites over time. The staff is one of the best in town and always treat you like one of the family. The have their staples on the menu that rarely disappoint (even if it does, they will fix it for you, not ignore you) You can tell they take pride in making your experience worth coming back.....and I will be back soon!"

  • "We had not been to Max's in a while. We always thought the food was pretty good, not great, but we loved the "vibe" and the pricing is very good. The service has always been good. This time, we were delighted to see they had made some changes to the menu since our last visit that really kicked the selections up a notch. Have to say, the menu was great...the execution was not. There were 8 of us (the server handled us easily), and we each had something different. Without going into a "blow by blow" on each item, suffice it to say the consensus was "good, not memorable" If you go out to "eat" you'll be satisfied. If you go out for a "dining experience" you'll want to try somewhere else."

  • "As always, Max's takes the extra steps necessary to make dinning enjoyable. Attentive staff eager to help really make for a nice time. My guests had never been to Max's. Everyone left full and with a promise to return on their own. Can't ask for more than that!"

  • "Had a nice Saturday evening dinner. The waitress was fantastic. When she noticed that a steak was overdone so she asked if a new one could be made to perfection. A few minutes later a perfect steak was brought out."

  • "I was being a wise guy when I made our online reservation and asked for the "fun" table. The entire staff from the hostess to all the waitresses went all in and made sure we were their fun table all night. It was a great night made better by the fun people that work at Max's. Thank all of you! And the food and wine were all exceptional, just like every night at Max's!"

  • "My husband had a dinner meeting here last week and came home and raved about his meal. So he suggested we go last weekend. We were both tired and I was hungry for meatloaf...so let me tell you this meatloaf is outstanding! The sautéed onions and sauce are unbelievable. Add mash potatoes and green beans and I was a happy girl. No salad or dessert required. Oh, my husband had the ArcticChar which was amazing as well. We weren't in the mood for a leisurely meal, just good food. All told we were in and out in 45 minutes and extremely satisfied!! Will be back soon."

  • "My wife and I wanted a quiet night out from our 2 year old. We arranged for a 7:45 seating and Max’s was right on time. The ambiance was not loud but active. We were still able to enjoy a quiet conversation without competing with the background. The waitress was very professional and attentive to our needs. My wife had the Petite Filet Mignon and was in heaven with the flavors. I ordered the Flat Iron Steak and savored the Bacon Wasabi Mashers. When we finished they cleared the table and left us to our conversation until I requested the bill. It was a very nice evening and look forward to doing it again."

  • "With reservations, we were quickly seated on a busy night. That was the best part of our experience at Max's. Service started out good, but after our appetizers came out, I am positive our waitress forgot that we were there. For the main course, I had the halibut with a bacon balsamic glaze. It was bland. It tasted as if they cooked the fish with no seasoning and covered it with the mild glaze. I'm sure that I could've had a better tasting halibut at a fast food place. Once the waitress finally noticed that we were done with our meal, she was quick to drop off the bill and not ask how our meal was. I was very disappointed with the overall experience, especially since I tell everyone I know that you can't go wrong with Max's."

  • "We enjoyed a dinner with our visiting family. The wait service was prompt and friendly. The food overall was very good, although, one of the specials of the night was not very special...should have figured out that it was a way to use up their leftover prime rib."

  • "We enjoyed our dining experience at Max's Bistro; however, we felt for what Max's is that it thinks too highly of itself. The food was good but overpriced = Fair (2 star) rating. The timing of dinning was very quick - great service or poor timing? Out appetizer and salads were brought out on top of each other with barely enough time to clear the salad plates for dinner to arrive. We preferred LeLa's with a similar but better executed menu and the pace of dinning was much more of an experience. If you want a nice place to eat and then go do something else after eating Max's is great. If you want a Dinning experience Max's is lacking. A couple whom we are good friend's with prefers Cracked Pepper over LeLa's. Cracked Pepper will be next"

  • "Having dined at Max's quite a few times, my wife and I were aware of the erratic nature of the food and service, but the location is ideal, so when a dear friend visited us last weekend we had lunch there. Shortly after we were seated, our server, who seemed not to enjoy her work at all, said she was responsible for all of the tables along the long west wall of the restaurant. A large baby shower party made communication with her difficult. Struggling to be heard, our friend asked her a question, but she did not respond. Before she left, he repeated his question, and she snapped, "I heard you." The eggplant fries and sweet potato fries were excellent, but the dry and overcooked salmon in an otherwise well-prepared salad was inexcusable."

  • "My wife and I went to Max's for Valentine's Day dinner. We had a reservation and got in fairly quickly. We started with eggplant fries which were better than any fry that I've ever had. At the same time you ordered a beet salad and our main menu item which was the halibut. Our salad and fries came within 5 to 10 minutes but the problem is the halibut took over one hour to get out. We saw other tables out receiving their food and they had been seated after us. I like Max's but this is a disappointment."

  • "When I moved to Fresno from the Bay Area I found Max's to be one of the few restaurants here fit for foodies. But something has gone terribly wrong. Of our party of 9, only one enjoyed their meal. The halibut was overcooked to mush with a hard crust. The chicken soup was too salty to finish. The beet salad was just meh. This is not the first poor experience I have had here, and I will not be returning any time soon."

  • "We went to Max's when a friend recommended it after we mentioned wanting a new place to try. We were pleasantly surprised. Our food was excellent, our service was good, although we waited a little long for drink refills, which I blame on a busy Saturday night. The ambience was welcoming yet romantic...a must go for artsy people, as there is purchasable art throughout. It wasn't somewhere we would take our children, but we will be repeat customers on date nights. The food was comparible to the more pricey restaraunts, like Ruth's Chris and Fleming's, without as hefty of a price. We will definitely go again."

  • "Max's is one of my favorite resturants in town. I had a fish special and my husband had the steak special. My husband's steak was a little under cooked but the server took it back with no problems. The bacon braised brussels sprouts were to die for! My halibut was done perfectly. We topped off the evening with espresso and dessert. I had the bread pudding (which i think is the best dessert I have had anywhere in town) and my husband had the mango sorbet. I would recommend Max's for anyone wanting great food and a vibrant atmosphere. We know that we will be back soon!"

  • "Our most recent visit was to celebrate our anniversary. I'm not sure how but Max's has kind of become the spot we go to when we celebrate most events, but always our anniversary. While I wouldn't say we are regulars we go there frequently enough to know what to excpect. My pork chop was amazing! I wanted to pick up the bone and get every last piece of meat off of it....fortunately or unfortunately my wife advised against it. She had her favorite dish, the Ahi Tostada which she loved. We will definitely be back soon."

  • "I chose Max's based on OT and Yelp reviews. The server was great, very friendly and attentive. We split the arugula and roasted butternut squash salad which was overdressed and not exceptionally flavorful. I had the lamb rib-eye which I loved. Cooked perfectly and great flavor. The toasted bulgur rice was amazing. My husband's beef rib eye though was anemic and pallid. He sent the first one back as it was overcooked. The second was cooked better but both pieces of meat were colorless and flavorless. Pretty good wine list. We bought one and brought one. The corkage was waived since we bought one as well. I'd go again just for the lamb rib eye but my husband has said he wouldn't come with me."

  • "Max's Bristro & Bar was recommended as a place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We were not disappointed! The service was professional and warm, and the food exceptional. We were relaxed and felt no urgency to rush our meal. We would definitely recommend Max's for an enjoyable and delectable experience."

  • "As a once a week regular, I find that the food, service and professionalism at Max's is outstanding. The fish specials are among the finest anywhere in California. The truffle fries will cause even the strictest of dieters to succumb to their unique and delicious taste."

  • "Max's has been around for a long time. I remember when it was a deli 20+ years ago. It's survived the ups and downs of the economy and fickle customers. I've had lunch, dinners, special celebrations, and experienced it's continual improvements and changes along the way, The Tomas art is a mainstay and it's reassuring to see that they are still there. I've loved Max's for everything that it is. Consistent, relaxed, good for many occasions, great food, nice drink, pleasant service, and kind to the kids in the party. What can I say? My go to place for a celebration is Max"s."

  • "We went for dinner. The service was very good. Friendly and welcoming staff. Food was a disappointment. Salads were acceptable but overpriced. Crab cakes were overcooked and at $16 for two-overpriced. The halibut was cooked very well, but the rice was mushy (even for Calrose) and vegetables were rather bland. All THAT for $90 including tip-NO THANKS! The ambiance was a letdown. We had to listen to Alvin and the Chimpmunks Christmas songs. Poor music choice for a place that claims so much! I have been to many bistros throughout the US and Europe. This place does nt even come close! THUMBS DOWN!"

  • "I came to Max's with a six o'clock reservation for two on a Sunday night. I was pleasantly surprised to find the resturant fairly empty. The service was prompt and courteous. Our server went over the specials, brought small bites, and asked if we needed any guidance on the wine list. We had been looking forward to this meal and had already revied the menu in depth online. We ordered everything (and asked for some modifications). The food came out as ordered. The timing was great; we got a new dish as soon as we finished the last. The food was very well balanced. Between two glasses of wine, two salads, and two entrees we were very satisfied. The bill only ran us about $100. We were pleased with the experience and will come back again."

  • "The food is always wonderful at Max 's (melt in your mouth filet mignon!) but the thing that impresses me the most is their wonderful service. Max 's should export its service training to other area restaurants. The servers are knowledgeable, friendly and attentive - every time you dine there. They help each other out. They clear tables with a smile. They help make meals memorable."
